That's brilliant news! perhaps it went into sleep mode? i have had some difficulty getting mine out of sleep sometimes, pressing the power button repeatedly plus also thinking i am pressing the power button when in fact i'm pushing the ethernet cover...

I think the latest update R0240DD will address the issues with the sleep signal :)

So far I LOVE this laptop! I ordered Silver, but the keys are a little difficult to see during the day because of this. I'm going to order a keyboard skin or possibly a set of black keys from sony & just switch them out. There is NO FAN NOISE - it's so extremely quiet, it's ridiculous! I didn't even know the MS Easy Transfer program existed - I used an external HDD & everything I wanted transferred was transferred.

Now, I've just go to get used to Windows 8.1 & the N-trig pen, and then I'm going to use the STEAM game service & download the pinball series - it's been great on my phone but it's gonna look awesome on this laptop.. has anyone else played any games on their 15 that really show off the 2 GB graphics card?

We got the Flip 15 i7/8gb/1TB hybrid drive from Best Buy and startup/shutdown is fine. I timed a restart the other day at about 30 seconds. That's not as quick as the pure SSD solutions, but fine. In reality, my wife leaves the machine plugged in and in sleep mode all the time so she almost never shuts down and restarts (and sleep mode resume is super quick). Most reboots have been associated with driver updates, etc. In our case, the machine is more of a desktop replacement than a true laptop...it sits on our kitchen bar or on a table in another room all the time. As a "lap"top it is a behemoth and the stupid screen edge digs into your legs. Still, it is a perfect solution for her (and the screen is awesome). If it were me, I would have a smaller form factor like the 13a.

As a bonus, however, we got the Flip 15 as an open box special...check out BB's website...they list everything in the stores near you...no issues...but $879 was a steal and what prompted me to go ahead and get it.

    Hi again mcatt66 :)

    Thanks for the details

Hummm. Not an easy decision I must say. I justed looked at the Vietnamese Sony site : VAIO Fit A
Although I don't understand the language, I do see "hybrid drive" under one of those big windows near the bottom, so they are available there. Does the 14 you're looking at have a hybrid drive or not, well, I can't say unless you could provide us with a model number perhaps.

Now concerning those specs : the 13 has 4 GB RAM and a 128GB SSD. That is pretty *minimal* and suited for very light use, perhaps enough for you but I can't be sure. Problem here is that RAM cannot be upgraded because the stick is soldered to the motheboard. Well a pro could swap it probably, but not most of us. I got only 4GB for my daughter's 14 and it is enough for her right now, but the FLIP has a *Fresh Start* install with virtually no bloatware so the 4Gigs are getting the job done with some headroom. Stick is removable on the 14s.
The 128GB SSD could be upgraded and I'm pretty sure we'll see M.2 drives hit the stores soon ; they are hard to find and pricey right now. (edit : not that pricey it seems ; please see my next post).

The 14 : if the HDD is a hybrid, then that would be a plus and the Flip would feel quick, though the 13 with SSD would be somewhat quicker overall. The "quick" factor is difficult to rate because highly subjective. I've had the priviledge to build my own desktop machine and have enjoyed the speed of SSD for over a year, and wouldn't live without it now. Those who haven't yet experienced a solid state drive will find Windows 8 (8.1) quite quick on a hybrid HDD. On a regular HDD ? Personal preference.

Taking the cover off a Flip is not super easy so you need to be motivated and have basic skills. And you need to do your homework. I can't know if you would eventually open yours up so I will go with what those two models have now, and say that the 13 is perhaps more suited to your needs, especially since you do find the 14 to be on the heavy side. The 13 will be quick out of the box with the SSD, and with light use you shouldn't require more than 4GB RAM, so good to go. Speeced like that, the 13 would be used more as a tablet, meaning for fun and not for work. If you plan on working with the machine at some point in the future, you'd need more disk space (internal or external). RAM depends on the programs you run ; if you don't do video encoding/editing, don't do photo editing, don't do CAD or other intense tasks then you should be fine with 4GB of RAM and a 128GB SSD.

    Hope this helps a bit.

    Hi again Witchfinder :)

Yeah, 256GB should do. That's what I have on my desktop machine right now with W7 on it. I have other internal disks for big files and backups, but the SSD does hold W7 + all my programs + quite a bit of data including pictures and music.
340 pounds is alot of money, I agree. Here in Canada, they want $500 for the 512 SSD (13 model) which is comparable. If you were to go out and buy a 512GB M.2 SSD right now, all I could find that is interesting is this, on Amazon US : Amazon.com: Crucial M500 480GB SATA 6Gbps M2 Internal SSD [Crucial PN: CT480M500SSD4] (480GB): Computers & Accessories
Very good price I must say, so much so that I'm really surprised ; $317 for a 480GB M.2 SSD is great because other sites are selling Intel 180GB drives for $1 per GB.
Anyway... you'll be able to upgrade for much less money than Sony is asking in the future ;)

Edit to add : found this for the UK : http://skinflint.co.uk/eu/crucial-m500-ssd-480gb-ct480m500ssd4-a889896.html

About the clean install, please check this post out from member bc4m5 : http://forum.notebookreview.com/son...ti-flip-pc-owners-thread-121.html#post9512935
One caveat : bc4m5 needed an extra 8.1 product key to activate the install. He has a MSDN subscription so the licenses are cheap for him. For us regular civilians (lol), a license would go for roughly $100.
Now someone else here (member pTTy) has apparently been able to install 8.1 fresh AND use the existing Flip product key. They posted a link with tips on how to achieve this : http://forum.notebookreview.com/son...ti-flip-pc-owners-thread-126.html#post9517427

I can't help you any further with the fresh install option because I haven't done it myself.

    Good luck !

Wow, that is a steal! I've checked and I'm lucky if the surrounding stores even have one IN the box. 30 seconds is not too bad at all. I can live with that. The Yoga 2 Pro I had was extremely fast and I hope I don't notice too much of a difference. Thanks for your input!

does anyone know whether the 14a is WiDi ready? I've heard conflicting reports on this. I have the Broadcom wifi card and I see the option to Project>Add Wireless Display under Devices but wasn't sure if this was limited to the premium13 or 15 only. I don't currently have a way to test this but but would like to possibly look into Widi Ready monitors in the future if I do have the option.

    Hi jvan01 :)

Google tells me you may be out of luck if your card is the "43142" model from Broadcom...

Official Intel list : Support Knowledge Base
(look at the 3 Broadcom cards supported)

    ...and this : https://communities.intel.com/thread/44465
(that person has a VAIO with an Ivy Bridge CPU (3rd gen) but also the "43142" card)
No luck there, apparently... and if we are to believe the official Intel list, the card isn't WiDi-ready :(

Your Y2Pro is actually the machine I would have gone for had the laptop been for me, but admittedly, with my eyesight and inconsistent Windows screen scaling I probably would have been running it at a 1600X900 resolution to see the dang thing!

Argh!! I can't bring myself to pull the plug on the 15A. I font know if I am going to be happy with a laptop that big/heavy. There are so many things I like about it though! Why can't the 13A be upgradeable?? Or less money?? I really can't spend more than $1300. I am so conflicted. The 15A or another Y2P? I really don't know......

    Hi all,

my unsolved Vaio Multi Flip 15 Problems after 1 month using:

INTEL WLAN 7260 Speeds (300 Mbit Max) - cannot resync to higher WLAN rates after heavy WLAN traffic on my wireless channel or energy saving modes (hangs at 1, 6, 11 or 27 Mbit) => this is not a Router Problem, AVM Router 7360 are state of the art in germany, solution: complete Driver restart or machine on/off
WLAN Design problem => Antenna is not longer in the LCD Cover and is shielded under the aluminium frame, if you place the Flip on a metal table, you get no stable WLAN connection.
Lost LAN connection on movements => RJ-45 connector design problem see here: Sony Vaio Multi Flip 15 - Ethernet RJ-45 Plug Problems - YouTube
Multi Flip beep's very rarely in front right (i think hard drive problem but I have no SMART Messages) or a Memory Problem, i have the 16GB option
Video Driver, do not install the latest INTEL Version over Windows Update because you get "green stripes" by video playback function

I had a lot of problems after upgrading my 14A from HDD to SSD crucial M500 240gb. Now finally all sorted out. The cloning software Easetodo is not cloning properly. Finally used the paragon and it works fantastic. My advice is before putting everything back together, double check the SSD and run it for at least 5-10 mins. I only tested boot up and run it then shut down without realizing that the SSD response is slow and freeze every few mins.

My flip is insanely fast now. Booted up in 13 sec, shut down is a bit slow in 7 sec. The whole laptop is snappy. Loving it. Time to remove the recovery drive I guess to get some extra space.

So, since I noticed the wifi card speed can degrade over time, and further since I am not ready to try out the latest Intel drivers (note: the later beta seems to be getting some good press), I created a simple Windows batch file script that checks the connection speed and asks if you want to disable and re-enable the network card. I could remove the check for the speed and just add this to the Windows task scheduler (i.e. reset the card once a day, every hour, whatever), but for now I'll just let my wife manually click the icon on her desktop if she notices stuff is slow. Really, this was just a slightly more automated way of doing this. I might remove all the questions and speed displays at some point (of course, at SOME point, I am hoping Sony certifies the later drivers). Anyway, here is the cheesy script (note: I am not a Windows batch file expert...so forgive any goofiness):. Copy this into a file with a "BAT" extension and drop it onto your desktop.

    The script:

    echo off
echo Remember to Right Click this icon and choose 'Run as Administrator'
echo Checking the speed of your network connection....
wmic NIC where NetEnabled=true get Name, Speed

echo Generally you should Reset if the speed is less than 52000000...
    echo off
    set /p response="Do you want to reset? (Y/N) "

if %response% EQU Y GOTO RESET
if %response% EQU y GOTO RESET

    GOTO END

    :RESET
Echo Disabling and Re-Enabling Network Adapter...
netsh interface set interface name="Wi-Fi" admin=disabled
netsh interface set interface name="Wi-Fi" admin=enabled

rem give time to disable and reenable
    choice /N /C 0 /T 6 /D 0

Echo Rechecking speed of your connection...
wmic NIC where NetEnabled=true get Name, Speed

    :END
    Echo
    Echo Exiting
    Pause

That's all there is to it...(note: as the reset requires admin rights, you have to run this by right-clicking on the batch file and choosing "Run As Administrator")

@oddoneout : I think that J-Deadly saw some 13s and 15s at BestBuy and wanted to buy quickly, so the 14A would be a custom order. But I had the same reaction you did ;)

@cabland : no batch guy myself, so as long as it works, it's all that matters :) Thanks, and I'll try it if I hear complaining, for sure...

Lol. We've all been where you're at. Best to sleep on everything and if your in limbo, maybe it can wait? Especially financially. I mean flip, processor and ultraness, make the cost high comparatively. This laptop isn't a necessity for college type purchase. It's a bit of a luxury item, I would say - comparatively. Forum and users will always be here to cheer you on.... You just have to sleep on it and do what's best for your needs and budget.

In regards to my SSD wants; I've got SSD's in everything else and am not used to the use/access lag from time to time on the 15a. Probably unnoticeable for most. For the stock Hybrid disk, overall I can't complain about the drive. I just can't accept a lacking drive in the beginning lifecycle of such a nice piece of equipment. Physical size of HDD is going to be a critical factor to fit in the laptop. I'm not even sure what is going to fit in here because there's not a whole lot of info out there....

Ok I bought a 14A! I ended up getting the i5/8GB/500 HDD. For $899 I think it was a good buy. Definitely going to swap out the HDD for an SSD in the very near future. In the end, the 15 was just too big for me. I think(hope) with an SSD I'll have a pretty nice machine. I am currently running all VAIOS updates then will do the Windows updates. From there I will update to 8.1. Then run the VAIOS updates again. Then go to Sony's website and grab the touchscreen update. Does that sound right?? Thanks for all the help guys! I really appreciate it.

It's been 2 weeks since I did a clean Win8.1 install. After upgrading to the new BIOS - R0240DD - I had a look at the Windows Reliability Monitor history, and found out that I've been having intermittent crashes of the Realtek Audio Service since the clean install. I wasn't aware of it because I haven't had any audio related problems.

At first, I couldn't find any pattern. It was only after the BIOS update that I determined that the crash happens on full shutdown (from Win-X menu) or system restart. Seems that the audio service is ignoring the system requests to shut down.

After some tries, I stumbled on uninstalling the Realtek Audio Driver. The system reverted to Microsoft Audio Drivers and the crash no longer occurs.

Other than that, things have been stable. Most of my usage is playing games and occasional telecommuting.

Just do all the Sony updates through the Vaio Update program on your PC. You'll need to update the Vaio update first, before it'll detect all the updates you will need.

Heh, I hear you. Funny thing is we got this 14A for our daughter just before college (next fall). I know it's not the minimalist *must have* for her. I'm the computer geek in the house and went completely gaga over the possibilities these Flips had to offer, and I know my daughter the artist (still an amateur, but who knows what the future holds, right ?). She'd been begging for a laptop since age 11 and we stood our ground, which was : " you'll get a laptop just before college", so here we are. The waiting paid off ;)

About your SSD question : any regular SATA SSD fits in the 14s and 15s. As long as they are no more than 7mm thick (I don't know of any that are thicker). The more popular SSDs right now are from Crucial (M500), Samsung (EVO 840 and Pro), Intels, Kingstons, ADATAs, Seagates (new) and many more. I got a 480GB Crucial, many here have gotten Samsung EVOs (250, 500 and even 1TB).
The 13s have "M.2" type SSDs, which are much smaller. They are finally showing up online, at decent prices too.

One note about the 15 : the drive is a little tricky to remove because of two flat cables that run across it. The 14s don't have this problem. One member took the time to explain how to gently disconnect these flat cables, with pictures (I'd need to look back, way back to find it in this thread...). But basically, the flat cables are held in place by compression-type connectors ; you don't pull on the connectors, you simply lift the top part of it with a nail or a small flat screwdriver, which releases the cable. It flips up, basically. Some flat cables get those *push/pull* connectors, where you simply pull on the connector (slide it back) to release the cable. But if I remember correctly, the Flip 15s have that flip-up type compression connector.
Anyway, the most delicate part of this job is getting the cover off...

So I will have the same question in a few days. My flip 15" from Shanghai is now in a Connecticut Fedex office and will be delivered home in a few days. I have read pages and pages of this wonderful forum. Looks like it is very important to update things in the right order. I am hoping some kind soul can post a step-by-step list of things to do, in the right order, for a not-so-technically savvy person like me -- so that I can update the computer and upgrade to Win 8.1 (and also let me know at what point I should install my MS Office which I will download from the Home Use Program that I get from my work) (and also at what point I add Avast virus protection). I ordered the super-souped up version, fresh start option, specs below . . .

    4th gen Intel® Core™ i7-4500U (1.80GHz / 3.00GHz with Turbo Boost)
    Windows 8 Pro 64-bit
    Microsoft® Office 2013 trial version
    Fresh Start
15.5" over Full HD IPS TRILUMINOS Display for mobile (2880 x 1620)
    NVIDIA® GeForce® GT 735M w/ Optimus (2GB) hybrid graphics
    512GB (512GB x1) solid state drive
    16GB (8GB x2) DDR3L-1600MHz
    Active Pen
    No Adobe® Photoshop® Elements software
    No Imagination Studio™ software
    No additional antivirus software
    No installation option

Fortunately, you don't have to think about it all too much. The updates will show up automatically for Windows (i.e. Windows Update) and in the VAIO Update utility. Mostly a lot of selecting what pops up, letting it download, install, and reboot (not everything can install at once...like the BIOS updates).

The older ones are 9mm thickness. I learned it in a hard way by finding out after I took the cover off and put in my cloned SSD and it doesn't fit. Had to order a new one. Got the Crucial M500 and can't be happier. Would have picked up samsung pro but dang those are pricey. I paid M500 240gb gently used for $115 so can't complain.

Hey guys, quick question. I think I am finally done with all updates. I updated the VAIO update first, then did all the VAIO updates. Then I updated to 8.1. Then I ran the VAIO update again and did all of those. Is there anything else I should grab from the Sony support page? Also, can someone please tell me how to turn off the backlight on the keyboard?? I can't figure it out for the life of me. Thanks.

Maybe. I think it's definitely Software, however.

I forgot to mention that my indexing is off. CPU usage varies from 1% to 5%. 19-25% RAM usage at all times with 8GB RAM. I kept all my processes and software to a minimum as I've uninstalled a lot of bloatware programs. Plus, everything is updated and I still can't figure out why sometimes it seems to jump from 8hours (which is totally inaccurate -- no way this machine will get 8 hours even if I dimmed the brightness and turned everything off!) to suddenly 3 hours (back to normal).

Again, I agree that this would most likely be a Windows issue because the battery life overall is about 5-6 hours, which is quite accurate (aka not hardware problem), but not the DISPLAY of the HOURS/TIME REMAINING part. Only the percentage is accurate. Again, how can a 5-6 hour battery life capacity laptop suddenly report 8+ hours and then back to 5 hours within less than 5 minutes? It doesn't make sense.

There has to be some type of software calibration for this if the percentage is correct but not the remaining time displayed. Anyone else have similar issues?

When I got my 14A, I had read that updates were needed to sort issues. I ran Vaio update and got nothing (I did not realize at the time I needed to update the updater) -- so after making sure I had all the Win 8 updates (from MS) like a bull in a China shop I went on the web page and updated everything. Then upgraded to 8.1, went back to the web page and downloaded everything else that seemed important. Machine runs like a Swiss watch. No issues. Now, under Windows "downloads" have a list of everything I loaded. And, yeah, you can set the keys to come "on" when pressed.

Really? No kidding. Hey if it works right? lol. It seems to be running just fine now. I barely hear the fan anymore. When I first booted up I couldn't believe how loud it was! I read time and again that it was loud before the BIOS update, but I want prepared for that lol. Couple things I don't like. 1. Why isn't there a button to turn the backlighting on/off when you want? 2. The speakers are horrible. Compared to my Y2P it is downright unacceptable. Any way to improve sound quality? 3. Maybe there is a way but I haven't found it yet. Why can't I turn the screen off? That would be helpful for listening to music/downloading. Other than those things, I really like it. Can't wait to put an SSD in her though!

I think it will ultimately sort it self. But you can also go to the web page for your model and do it there.

Yeah the speakers are garbage. I would also like to know how to toggle the screen. When i am running a video render I'd like to toggle off the screen to save battery but havent figured out how. I set the screen to shut off on battery in 2 minutes but if it does shut down the processes pause and resume when the screen comes on....

Also sometimes it renders fast and others is slow. Right now I have a 9 minute video with no effects that on a machine of this configuration should run close to real time and right now it is taking 40minutes....

Hey guys, I've just been playing around with my Vaio Flip with a 256GB SSD and noticed a lot of space was missing. It is my understanding that Windows 8 & 8.1 uses space for recovery files and upgrade files. I guess my concern is whether the space I'm seeing is actually normal or not.

Upon viewing File Explorer, I show my C:\ drive to have 170GB out of 204GB free (available) for space. This is after I remove MOST (about 90%) of the bloatware that Sony came with. I also have Indexing and System Restore disabled/turned off. What happened to my ~34GB of space?

I then checked Disk Management and realized I had recovery partitions. See attached picture here: test.jpg . My questions are as follows:

    1) While the Disk Management adds up to 238GB of space, I am curious whether having 5 Partitions is normal with 2 of them being 31.59GB and 1.44GB. Is this common? If so, what are they? Should I or can I even remove them if I do not plan on using System Restore or restoring my laptop back to its original state?

    2) With 34GB of space used for partitions, I have another ~34GB space gone as well. Remember that I only had about 170GB FREE space to use after uninstalling unnecessary programs and disabling System Restore and such. I haven't messed around with any other settings (I've heard things like PageFile, Hibernation, SuperFetch, etc. can take up lots of space). How can I check WHAT is exactly taking up another 34GB of usable space and to determine if I can GAIN that space back (by deleting or uninstalling other files/features?) Is the Windows 9 install THAT big?

    3) I also want to add that I did u pgrade from Windows 8 to 8.1 on the 1st day I got my laptop. Would this only add to the problem of disappearing ANOTHER 34GB of space?

All in all, I've lost 68GB of total space it seems. Any suggestions or recommendations?

Anyone else got the Intel Smart Connect update with Windows Update?
I disabled it immediately, as I don't need the VAIO to stay up to date.
I have my phone for that.

I also noticed the defrag service consume CPU and IO.
I disabled defrag on my C partition of my SSD.

when it's rendering slow, please go to Task Manager (More details) - Performance tab and tell me what is the speed of your CPU.
I have said before, that the CPU sometimes doesn't want to go above 0.58 GHz.

[1] Don't touch the 34GB partition or the 350MB partition before it - yet. Create recovery media first. Refer to your VAIO Manual under HowToUse/BackupAndRecovery/Recovery/CreateRecoveryMedia (file:///C:/ProgramData/Sony%20Corporation/VAIO%20Care/Localsite/VAIO%20User%20Guide/US/ENG/contents/TP0000210008.html). To be on the safe side, select the option to verify the media created. On completion, there's instructions on how to test that your Recovery Media works.

The 34GB partition is the Sony Recovery Media image.
If you can't create the recovery media, try applying the Rescue Data Update Program patch from the Sony UK site and try again. You can get it here: Sony : SVF15N15STS updates | Download updates for SVF15N15STS

It is important that you have the recovery media if you want to restore your Flip to factory image. You'll need a 32GB USB flash drive for this.

I'm assuming that you've also taken at least a System Image Backup of your Flip before proceeding...

[2] Clean up drive C:... When you updated to 8.1, the update would have created a .OLD folder on your C: drive - windows.OLD - IIRC. You can delete that. Here's the MS recommended way (which I did before I decided to go the clean install route) How to remove the Windows.old folder - Microsoft Windows Help

That should free up a sizeable chunk.

[3] You can now get rid of the 34GB partition. Try using the method from the VAIO manual first (file:///C:/ProgramData/Sony%20Corporation/VAIO%20Care/Localsite/VAIO%20User%20Guide/US/ENG/contents/TP0000210000.html).

This process failed for me - again, before I decided to go clean install. I had to manually delete the partition using diskpart via command line. You can also delete the 350MB partition.

You should now be at the minimum footprint for a factory install.

    FYI...

260MB partition = Sony OEM partition. At first I thought this could be the EFI BIOS extensions (back from my HP Envy days). I've done a clean install which wiped everything and been through the latest BIOS update and haven't had any issues. But if I were still on factory install, I'll keep ALL partitions before the C: drive partition.

1.44GB partition = Windows RE tools
260MB partition = Windows EFI System
128MB partition = Windows MSR; this is hidden. You'll only see this using diskpart
BIG partition = C: drive. This and the preceding 3 make up your Windows install.

    Hi there Xpred :)

Edit : I was slow to type this so hadn't seen bc4m5's post above. Good info there for sure

I don't have all the answers to your questions, but I may be able to shed some light. Here goes :

    - The total drive capacity of 238.35GB of your 256GB drive is actually accurate. Drive manufacturers use the decimal notation to calculate space while Windows uses binary. Read here for more details : Why does my hard drive report less capacity than indicated on the drive's label?

    - When I add up all those 6 partitions, I get a total of 238.37GB, which is within 0.02GB of your drive's reported capacity (don't know where the extra 200MB come from, but anyway...).

Everything I see there is normal. What you can do : delete the Recovery partition and gain that 31.59GB of space back. This can be done via the VAIO Recovery program.
You mentionned never wanting to restore via Recovery : that's fine if you have a good full image backup. You should also create Recovery media to a USB stick or DVDs BEFORE, just in case your SSD fails and you somehow can't reinstall that backup image to a new drive. I call it being extra careful ;)

    What about the other ~34GB?

Remember I have two 34GB missing. There's one located on the image which is a recovery partition, then there's another 34GB that I'm not sure where it went.

    The breakdown:

    238GB total SSD capacity subtract ~34GB = 204GB.

However, after uninstalling most Sony programs and bloatware, I now have about 170GB FREE out of 204GB, which I have lost 68GB. I understand where my first 34GB came from (it's the partitions you guys mention). Where is the 2nd 34GB? It can't be the Windows install, can it?

Updating to 8.1 adds a new partition. I had 5 before 8.1 and went to 6 after updating.

    Hi

I am an architecture professional and recently, my Toshiba Qosmio X 500 has gone out on me. I am looking to replace it with a slightly more portable machine which would run all of my softwares - Photoshop, Autocad, Revit etc.

I am looking to choose between the Dell Inspiron 15 7000 series(I get it for the 256ssd and 2gb nvidia graphics for under $1400) or select the vaio flip 15. I really like the Flip 15 but I'm taken aback by the vast amout of complains the users are having about the fan noise, touch screen and others. Any idea on which one I should go for?

    Appreciate any inputs, Thanks!

As mentioned before, the 8.1 update would have created a backup/image of 8.0 in the WINDOWS.OLD folder in C:\

Right click on the WINDOWS.OLD folder, select Properties and you'll see the other missing 30GB.

    Hi guys,
recently i've been having a problem - ive noticed that my laptop wakes by itself after sleep (the screen is turned off but as soon as i touch the screen it comes on) - obviously, this only happens in tablet mode!

    anyone else had this issue?

EDIT: just figured out the wake source was Wake Source: Device -Intel(R) 8 Series PCI Express Root Port #3 - 9C14

as per event log - anyone know what this is?

Ok, I know what you mean now. So what we do know for sure at this point : your partitions are as expected and what we're focusing on is your C: drive, which has 34GB occupied, correct ?
I don't know what you have installed as far as programs. I also don't know what you have on disk as far as data (pictures, music, movies, program data, etc...)
This 34GB includes Windows, which represents what... 10 to 12GB minimum ? Add programs and some large personal files to that and that could easily explain 34GB. I dual boot W7 and W8.1 on my desktop machine and hardly ever use 8.1 which was installed clean ; C: drive is populated by 39GB of stuff. I only have a few programs installed and have no music, no movies and no pictures on C: right now. I do have indexing and Restore enabled though.
bc4m5 mentionned "WINDOWS.old" : I don't have it in my desktop's W8.1 which was updated from W8. The only times I've seen "WINDOWS.old" being created is when you install Windows on a partition where another Windows already exists, like when doing an upgrade from W7 to W8, or W8 to a full W8.1 (not just the update). "WINDOWS.old" contains most of the previous install's files, including user profile + programs + system files too, so yeah it's large.

I would say you probably have a *normal* amount of stuff on C: right now with 34GB occupied, but I can only guess.

~Mark's right. If you right-click and select Properties on the C:\Windows folder, at least with mine, it'll show that it's using up 30.7GB. So yes, Windows 8.1 (and 8.0) folders are big.

Having done a clean install, I found out that Sony also uses the Windows folder to keep the unpacked driver install files. Those add up.
