I had a look for a silent profile in there last night but couldnt see it. Should it definately be in the viao control centre? I will take another look tonight. I read it supposed to be under thermal settings but I dont have thermal settings.

Sony should offer this upgrade, it is the same model, and also this display has a gray fault, different shades of gray are noisy (like noise filter in photoshop).
    Have you noticed that?
And if they don't want to change my display (of course for an extra pay) i will change it for them, and if i need the warranty i will put the old one back. :)
But WILL IT FIT? :) WORK?

Reports from Hong Kong also many high pitched noise. The problem with some people can hear it some cannot is the frequency of that high pitch noise maybe beyond someone's upper limit! Some within the limit could hear it!

    Fixed my fan issue.

Power was on high performance mode so the processor was maxed out all the time (dunno why this is the default setting). There is no silent mode though.

Switched to balanced mode and its great!

Minimum is now 5% an max is 100%. No loss of performance when rendering in Blender either. Fan is now a lot quieter and only ramps up when rendering etc.

    :)

I don't understand why people complain about this. Frankly, if you want a gaming laptop, buy one. The E series is a budget series, of course Sony is going to cut corners. This is a bit like complaining that a Kia doesn't perform like a Lexus.

I was planning on buying the CW vaio however recently discovered the battery drain problem most of the CW`s users are experiencing, so perhaps owners of E series could confirm that does this model exhibits similar behavior or not?

So,should I wait till sony release new bios or give my laptop for repairing?
I went to service center last week they could not recognize the problem,I'm afraid that I give it to them and they change some part and finally problem remaining.I'm in India.Really service centre in india doesn't know any thing.because last week when I went there I explain the problem but that guy in his mind ,thought that its better to give a load to system,it's funny he typed some commond in cmd and make infinity loop and said me I gave a load and if it hase a problem I should here the noise. With 7 cmd windows and infinity load i checked cpu usage became 25%.Really they are stupid.i said that it does not related to cpu fan. with a few line of codes in matlab we can give around 80% load.

Thats the main reason I chose the E over the CW.

Didnt get much time to do multiple tests, however a 99% charged battery showed 94% after it switched off for ~ 8 hours.

Dont know whether that is a minor drain or whether thats the charge used in booting up

thats just fine, the drain in CW was awful 20 - 30 % within that time period . One other query, whats the battery time on this thing with standard six cell battery ? (the real one, not the one sony claims)

China SonyStyle has the 14" E Series with ATI 5650 1gb - link. What's the deal, why do we get the crappy ATI 5145 512mb? I don't get it, why do different countries get different configuration options?!

It's not screen dependent because you can see on that link that there two configurations with the 1366x768 display. One with ATI 5145 512mb, and one with ATI 5650 1gb. I dearly hope that we in the UK get that choice too but I bet we don't. Can you tell I'm miffed?

Has any of you used Vaio Care's "System TuneUp" feature? It's supposed to defragment and clean the hard drive and Windows Registry. I did and the laptop seems to run a little bit smoother.

Yes I have used it,seems to keep things in order and saves having to run separate programs.

Does anyone know if there is a method of turning off the screen on a VPCEB1ZOE apart from setting it to turn off automatically after a set time.

I thought there would be but i can't seem to see it.

Anyone with the bluray drive notice its rather noisy. Why do they have to be so noisy in laptops. When I play blu's theres even an annoying little grinding noise in the background. Any one else notice this?

Can someone tell me how much it's safe to overclock the VPCEB1S1E/BJ model with Ati 5650 Hd card? I downloaded a program called MSI Afterburner and I'm not sure what settings to change and how high I can change them to? I'd appreciate advices before I try anything, as I don't wanna break my laptop.

Haven't waded through the thread to find this out, but has anyone opened their E series up? Just wondering whether the CPU is soldered in or not. I'm asking because I'm thinking about getting one of the readymade hi-res ones (VPCEB17FX) and would like to be able to change out the i3 to an i5 at a later date, if it's not soldered in. Or are there mobo issues if you do that?

I looked at the Intel specs and they make both soldered and not-soldered versions of the i3.

Of course if the US site offered the E with the hi-res screen in a CTO that would solve my problem. It's not practical for me to wait a few months to see if that ever happens.

    TIA.

Did your TuneUp also find an overwhelming number of problems for the hard drive and registry? It found around 800 something problems in those 2 departments for my system. That's unbelievable and enexpected for a month-old computer.

I don't think there's a way to turn the screen off, except doing it from the Power Options.

I had a similar issue with the fan. My fan is pretty quiet but it is always on even when the computer isn't running any programs or is idle. Is your fan still always on eventhough it is quieter?

hey guys..i got my VPCEB1ZE about 3 weeks ago..i'm pretty pleased with it, track pad takes some getting used to but the issue that really bothers me is the battery drain - even when the battery is out of the laptop - for example i charged it to 100% last night then i removed it and i used the laptop on AC only now about 16 hours later i put the battery in I start it and surprise - 85% ....a friend of mine bought the same model and he is experiencing the exact same thing so my question - is this normal cause to me it's not..should i contact sony about this? i mean c'mon the battery was out and the power is still draining..

    Just want to know:

    1) The high pitch noise only found in Sony notebook or across the board with i series CPU

    2) Can someone please recommend a notebook that is relatively hassle free and simular to EB such as HD screen and bluray combo?

    Thanx

As far as I know the high pitched noise also occur in other laptop brand with Core iX processors.
My EB is actually hassle-free, no battery drain problem, and the high pitched noise is not present with the power adaptor plugged-in.

There is another bad noise that starts when I place the palms of my hand on the panel beneath the keyboard buttons to type. As soon as I take off my hands, it stops. Please verify if you've also got this noise. This laptop is really not made so well.

Do you mean backlit screen or keyboard? If you mean screen I can't tell you for sure. I can tell you that there is no backlit keyboard option on the E series.

Don't tell me Sony still haven't fixed this issue? The CW series is plagued with the battery drain problem. If Sony have produced another series of laptop without fixing it then that is simply unacceptable. I hope it's not the case because I was planning on buying the 14" E series

hey. I meant the screen sorry. I saw the lower res version in a PCWorld store at the weekend and was underwhelmed with the colour.

I returned an FW about 6 months ago because I thought the 1600*900 screen wasnt up to the claims, then thought I'd wait for model refresh.

I do remember the old FW 1080 screen was awesome and was hoping the E series 1080 screen would be as good?

Flexi would you care to comment on the 1080 screen, or post a picture?

    Cheers

I have the 1080 screen from PCworld and it is amazing. The best screen I have ever seen on a laptop. Every time I turn it on it still gives me the wow factor. Was going to buy a Samsung R780. The Sony was sitting next to it and the screen blew me away compared to the Samsung.

Can anyone else in the UK access the 'customize your vaio' section for the E series on the SonyStyle website? I've tried for 3 days now but the page cannot be loaded. I've cleared cache etc, tried in both firefox & IE but no luck. I cannot other models customize page, such as the CW & S series no problem.

Sorry Bosseman I don't actually own an E series yet.

Either of you tried overclocking the 5650??? ive read good things about it in other notebooks(acer 5740g) << the one i was going to get but decided against it.
ppl are reporting it easily clocks from 450mhz - 650 and mem up to 850/900.

i did a 3d mark 06 test and got 5900...i really want the extra 40% or so on the card though.

    What bios update??
