For overclocking use MSI Afterburner and GPU-Z to monitor clock changes, it's working for me. Just make sure you change the "Enableunofficialoverclocking" to equal 1 in MSI Afterburner's program folder's cfg file(Open in Notepad).

With the drivers, however, I'm getting the same problem and I haven't been able to fix it.

Also that note pad line is not there.

anyone actually o/cd this e series???

I know these 5650's easily go to 650 core clock and i feel a bit like im wasting 40% of my graphics performance... i think its just the fact we cant update out drivers to 10.3.

    WHYYY!!!!!!!

I am looking getting the e series in 17.3" 1080 screen. It gives you the option for 2 hard disks. Does this mean if I get one hard disk there is a space for another on the 17.3" models? Also there is no option for 2 7200rpm hard disks. Does anyone know why?

I currently have Sony VAIO BX297 which has 2 hard disks. I have a ssd in one and a 7200rpm in the other and it runs really well. The only issue is the cpu and gpu are out of date so I need a new laptop.I would like to do this on the E Series.

    Cheers,

    Tom.

You have to use AMD GPU Clock Tool to OC the 5650. Also I updated my drivers to 10.3 without any problems.

Hi ive got a VAIO EB on order for my sister to go to uni and would would like to do a clean install as soon as i get it.

I have a FW now and since i got it i installed vista business then windows 7 when it came out. I have a windows 7 installation disk and would like to know if i could use that disk with the key from the sticker on the laptop? Also is there anything different software wise on the EB from my FW to still keep full functionality i.e the splash top web browser thing.

    Thanks, James

It depends on the version of the key.
Windows 7 Home keys only work with Windows Home, Windows 7 Professional keys only with Windows 7 Professional, and so on. So better get the good version when you want to make a clean install or get an approprioate (legal) key.

As for the splashtop webbrowser thing, I don't know.
Try to find something about it on the original harddrive (before doing the clean install). I haven't seen any tutorials or answers about it. So I guess you're on your own for that...

Yes, you can use a Win 7 disk with the key on the laptop.

Functionality-wise, you'll need to install the Sony utilities for the Fn brightness/volume keys, which will be the same as the FW. Maybe Control Center too if you want that. For the quick web access, yes, there's also a Sony program for that you'll need. It's called, unsurprisingly, "Quick Web Access". I don't know if it's on the support site, if not you can get it on the Sony recovery disks.

Cheers for the replies, I have a full version windows 7 home premium 32bit and 64 bit install disks. Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit is pre-installed so i guess i should be ok. Im not too interested in getting the quick start working, however if anyone reads this and does know, any info would me much appreciated.

Here's a link with the driver for the Alps Touchpad: http://www.2shared.com/file/12390397/ccab13ae/Pointing_Driver__Alps_.html

Some people (on a Dutch forum) suggested the driver on Sony support is not the correct one, but you can still try that one first if you'd like. Maybe it's corrected now... ;)
Here's the link to the Sony support page for your specific model (click on the tab "Originally installed" and look for something like "pointing driver").
    http://support.vaio.sony.eu/computing/vaio/downloads/updates/index.aspx?l=en_GB&m=VPCEB1S1E_BJ

Edit: Mind, your English is not that bad ;)

I have a question for the user called GUPP:

I too have your model of sony vaio and mine too has the GPU downclocked to 450Mhz.
How did you overclock your Mobile 5650 GPU?
I have Windows 7 64 bit and it won't let me install AtiTrayTools (because ATT does not have the microsoft-signed driver for the 64bit version).
Do you use a 32 bit version of OS? Or do you know another way of doing it? If so, could you (or someone else) please tell me how to do it in Windows 7 64bit?
Thx in advance for the answer.

Can also get it in the Recovery Centre, just copy the folder to a USB drive if you want to use it on a clean install.

    AMD GPU Clock Tool works

I don't think you will find it anywhere.

I recently had problems with QWA and wanted to reinstall it and could not find it anywhere, even on the Sony site ,eventually I found I could reinstall it from the Vaio Recovery Centre on the HD partition but of course if you are doing a clean install you won't have this.

The only reference I could find to it was here:-

    http://vaio-quick-web-access.software.informer.com/

but they don't have a link to a download.

It could of course be on the Recovery Discs if you made some, just a suggestion.

I have a problem with my E Series. Sometimes when I run off the battery I cannot change the screen brightness. It only shows 1 bar on the brightness OSD. If I plug it back in I still can change it. If I reboot all is well again.

    What is wrong?

    Hello all.

Does anyone know the physical size of the hard drive in the new 14 inch E series laptops? I'm hoping it is standard 2.5 inch so I can replace it with a 2.5" SSD.
Does anyone have any experience of doing this that they would like to share?

I'm retiring my trusty old PCG-V505AP - a truly lovely laptop that unfortunately is a little obsolete.

For owners of a gunmetal black E series, how much gloss is there around the keyboard? Is the palmrest area the shiny plastic and does it have glitter in it?
    Thanks.

The keyboard itself has no gloss at all. The palmrest/front area is shiny plastic, but there's no glitter or anything like that.

Looks like I'm out £50 then.

Ordered my E series 28 Feb, and it went into production last week. They have still not taken money out of my account so I assumed they would honour the reduced price. Just called up, and no such luck - apparently the price has been agreed, and I would have to cancel my order and wait another couple of months to recieve it - no chance.

    Pretty sneakily done Sony.

Does anyone have the E series in UK with my config yet? i5 520, ATI HD5650, Full HD screen, Blu-Ray Player, 320gb -from looking at this forum it looks like no one has yet had this spec, with most going for a quicker purchase with i5 430. Actually I seen to remember you had top spec MythDat - how did you get it so early?

Also, Any more reports on Overclocking anyone?

I do have the same spec as you, yeah. I didn't get it early really - when I ordered it back in Feb, the delivery time was the same for the 430 and 520. Guess I got in before components supplies started running low!

Ordered mine yesterday. Price has dropped £100 because of free blu-ray writer. Phoned them up just now, they can't alter the order or give me any money back so they cancelled it and re-ordered with new discount - plus he gave me free express shipping, so even though I will probably have to wait longer for the build I should get it quicker.

If you go to Sony's support site you can download the instruction manual which should mention about if you can add a 2nd hard drive or not.

Question for Sony Vaio EB1M1E owners,

does it also have an E-Sata/usb port in the left, and 3 usb ports in the right?

Or 2 usb ports in the left, one in the right?

    Thanks!

Thanks Wokis for your prompt reply.

Did anyone make a head-to-head test of EB1M1E vs EB1S1E (i3 330M vs i5 430M) and saw if the difference is really noticeable in terms of speed?

I really wanted the EB1S1E, but they estimate 3 weeks to delivery at a local shop. But they have an EB1M1E in stock, and I'm kindof in a hurry

    Thanks!!
