For the people who have recently ordered the vaio e series. I have just rang sony, they have confirmed that some info is missing off the order acknowledgment but they do have it all on their systems, as they had my correct processor order.

The guy I spoke to said that they are having problems meeting the demand of the i processors, but for people who have ordered them we will get them without any problems.

He said that I won't get a production email now until like the 14th August, so I won't hear again off them until then, so this is common and nothing to worry about - it seems to be taking a while at the mo due to the high demand.

    Thank for sharing the info.
It seems I'm in same boot.

Orderer on 07.07. that time sony wrote

We expect your VAIO order to be shipped to you between 20.07.2010 and 27.07.2010. Please note that this is an estimated shipping time. We will send you an update if this estimate changes.

    So 3 extra weeks. :(

God dammet, I got so annoyed with the stated period of arrival, that I went to the computer store and started caressing the beautiful white EB in store there...darn I'm going mental...

    I mean come on...

"We expect your VAIO order to be shipped to you between 27.07.2010 and 03.08.2010. "

what? are they extracting the required amounts of raw materials from the earth and building it from (literally) scratch? come on Sony get off you asses and get me my portable computer.

What's this all the E's are out of stock? Glad I bought it before this happened! I am really annoyed about missing out on the free bluray though (missed out on offers on bluray both just weeks before and after I ordered) :(

Anyway, take a look at this email I recieved today from Sony repair guys:

Just so you can understand the problem is that the signal is cut not the actual wireless connection. Downloads will pause and will not complete unless the lid is always open! On the Steam download page I can actually see the download speed gradually decrease to nothing from the moment I close the lid - and climb back up again when it is opened.

It's slightly annoying as I'm sure there's a hardware fault. The problem is happening when it is awake and straight away not when it goes to sleep in the hour. Both my old laptop and my brother's netbook don't have this problem! But what can I do if even Sony fail to spot a hardware fault? I emailed them with extra information and rang that number as well. Hopefully they'll do something.

LOL - this made me fully p*ss myself laughing at work hahaaaa
mainly because I can really sympathise with your pain - I too am going slightly mental.

At least we know we'll get it eventually - the guy on the phone said that the E series has extremely high demand, hence the running out of parts. Although to make you feel better he also said that the estimated time of delivery isn't always accurate and it is possible that we may get it earlier - fingers crossed aye!

I believe this is a design flaw with most of the Arrandale line of Intel processors (the Core iX series). If you search the Sony F series, around the February time frame I believe, you will find dozens of posts about it. There were some workarounds - turning the internal mic on, but not recording was the easiest and eliminated the noise. But Sony also eventually issued a patch if I'm not mistaken. Since then the noise has been prevalent on many Sony models and also those of other brands. If you Google it, I'm sure you will also find loads of info. Nonetheless, if it bothers you, you should consider returning the laptop for a new one - it's a problem that only occurs randomly on manufactured product. The next one you get has a decent chance of not having the problem. Best Buy is well aware of it, as it first occured only on F series models sold there. Hope this helps you. Good luck.

I just saw it at the sony center downtown, dosent look any different but has AMD processors and onboard ati graphics. It does look a little different than the EB, looked more curvy, the assistant got a little annoyed because I was getting a little too comfortable with the laptop in the store. I guess the release of this model is intended to capture more of the laptop users market by providing more affordable configurations for all. The EE and the EF are new models @ 15.5in, click on click here:

Tip for people to avoid having to go through the hassle of extracting to install stuff on a clean install in the future:

Keep a copy of your "VAIO Recovery" folder safe somewhere. On a factory install or with VAIO Care installed, you'll find it at /Program Files/Sony/VAIO Recovery

This folder is basically just the portion of VAIO Care that allows you to install drivers and programs from the recovery partition or recovery DVDs. It's a small 80mb folder, I have it on a USB key. Whenever I want to install a driver, or software that isn't available online like the Quick Web Access or WinDVD, I just pop the key in, run VAIO recovery, and install what I want from the recovery DVDs.

Or something else too: copy the contents of your C:\WINDOWS\System32\drivers

onto a flash drive or a CD or something, then on your new system, just copy these files to the drivers folder, and when windows has found the driver, it will automatically register it into the registry. Hell, you don't even need to copy it back to your system, let windows search for it automatically, and you wont have unnecessary drivers on your system .

Software for the drivers? Well, yeah but I said it more from an emergency point of view, its good to keep a folder of these handy, then when you have to reinstall, you dont have to spend hours searching and downloading, you'll at least be able to use the device if not do cool things with it using the software.

No, I mean software as in programs - like those I mentioned for example, Quick Web Access and WinDVD, that you can't get anywhere but the recovery partition or recovery DVDs.

I am thinking about getting a Vaio EA and just wanted to ask owners a few questions:
    1. What is the avg battery life you get on a charge?
    2. How durable would you say it is?
    3. How hot does it get?

    Thanks

I saw a vid on youtube that said that I can download my OS from microsoft and register it using the serial key provided on the laptop sticker. Would this be possible along with your way of getting all the drivers beforehand?

I rang up sony today and the guy said that he thinks my laptop will go into production in a week judging on the current wait time. I ordered on the 8th July so sounds like they're moving things along quite quickly now :D

Just a quick question - I brought the lower res screen as I heard fps while playing games is a lot higher when not on the HD screen. Can anyone with the 1366x768 screen give me any feedback on this thought and the quality - I have heard some negative comments on the quality but I'm not that picky to be honest. I just hope it's not dreadful haha. My current laptop is oldddd and has 1280x800 res so i'm guessing it will be better than that (which I'm quite happy with anyway)

Anyone else recently received their vaio e? Any feedback on it's noise, heat, battery time, etc? Thanks :)

Well, I have the i3 system with ATI 5470 graphics and 1080p screen. I play Urban Terror, which used to be a Quake 3 mod but now its a free standalone game. I runs just fine at 1280x720, which is non-native but still supported resolution on this laptop. Doom 3 seems to look and work fine at this resolution too, and I haven't even fiddled with any graphics options. If you got a system with a Radeon 5650, it should have no problems with running even newer games than those.

I know the vaio with the 1080p screen will cope with some of these demanding games especially with the 5650 but like you said with non native res and prob not with the highest settings - if the settings are put high then I'm betting fps will suffer on the hd screen even with the 5650.

I would like to be able to play games at the highest settings, with native res as its what looks best - okay I'll be without the HD screen but I'd rather not have that and run the game at its best without any lag at all if you get what I mean. (60fps+)

I can def deal without HD, I won't really be watching blu-rays and if so then I'll hook them up to my HD TV, plus I don't think my eyes could deal with the really small text all the time. I just want to know that the sony screen isn't dreadful at lower res - though I'm sure it wont be for me, I'm used to a not so great screen.

    Hey guys,

I'm looking into ordering a Sony Vaio E series (15.5") but the build time is 7-8 weeks. Is it really that long or do they advertise that to cover themselves?

Just read that ATI do not give driver updates to sony's 5650 - how will I go about getting the regular driver updates for it, does anyone know?
Also does this mean my EB won't have the ati catalyst control centre? I don't know much about all this so sorry if I'm asking obvious questions - it all confuses me a bit. Ta

I ordered mine on the 8th July and I think I may get it quicker than my estimated build time - when I spoke to Sony I got told that I will hopefully have it a week or so into august - so fingers crossed will be a 5 week wait for mine, which was predicted as 8-9 weeks to begin.

They're not oficially supported by either Sony or ATI, but you can still install the latest drivers (including control centre). ATI's official method of installing is via their downloader utility, which blocks Sony machines. But you can bypass it by just downloading the raw intaller file rather than going through the downloader utility.

Actually the "raw installer" can also identify that you got a sony machine and simply say that your device has the latest drivers, refusing to update.

I dare you to try it. Here's the "raw" supplied by AMD:
    Drivers & Support | GAME.AMD.COM

Should you use anything below 10.6 and run that, It will say you already have the latest driver. I believe it will still install the bundled "junk" software though.

The link kokik provided points to the unrestricted version though. That's the version you want to download, even though it's not from official channels.

Edit: I withdraw my point about standalone not being able to install on Vaios. It may simply have to do with that the only standalone package supplied through AMD's website is directed at non-mobility graphics cards, and won't work due to that.

New challenge then. Try and find unrestricted mobility drivers at amd.com if you dare :)

I don't think ATI actually have them posted for download, but the file is on their servers.

    www2.ati.com/drivers/mobile/10-6_mobility_vista_win7_64_dd_ccc.exe

The link should be the same for every new release, just change the 10-6 to 10-7 etc

A portion of system RAM is reserved for hardware/OS address space, nothing you can do about it. It's a Windows thing.

Just leave it as it is - unless you need the HDD space it makes no difference. If you have no page file and the system runs out of memory, it has nothing to overflow into and crashes.
