    Hi to all,
please could anyone tell how "bad" is it with full hd vaio EB display working outdoors or window/light behind me? I guess it's glare one and not LED. Is it still watchable (for example no direct sunlight)? Compared for example with vaio F premium full hd display (matt). .

I am seriously about to buy a laptop, display is a priority. 4 candidates are: vaio F full hd matt no LED, vaio EB full hd glare no LED, HP probook 6550 hd+ matt LED, HP elitebook 8540 full hd matt LED. I preffer a bit of gaming too, e. g. mafia 2 and HP bussiness graphics are not very powerfull. Vaio EB is a best candidate, but i am not sure about glare display, might have a window behind me while working on it.. :) Any advice welcomed. Thank you forwardly. ;)

You seem to think that "glare" and LED are two types of display technologies. That is not the case. Vaio E-series like most lappies have a LED screen, basically defining how the backlight works and nothing more. Glare screen indicates that the screen surface has a glass-like finish, making it unsuitable for outdoor use but a nicer more colorful picure to look at indoors.

Not sure about this LED and Glare thing but can confirm that if you watch full HD content indoor on this screen at max brightness.. then there can be only one reaction - !! Wow !!

I have just got the laptop yesterday. I have not done clean install as it is working absolutely fine and fast for me.
I had bought Dell Studio XPS sometime back and it was horribly slow with all Dell Bloatware..
Anyways.. My Q is - What do they mean by 'Not Supported'
I can install 10.8 only if I have done the clean install or I can upgrade even if the OS is installed by Sony.

You can install in any state. "Not supported" means you can't install the drivers using ATI's downloader utility, which is how they distribute it. The downloader has a restriction in it that prevents Sony, Toshiba and Panasonic users from downloading. You have to find a link to the raw driver installer file and use that - ATI have it on their servers but they don't publish the link.

    Which is here! http://www2.ati.com/drivers/mobile/10-8_mobility_vista_win7_64_dd_ccc.exe

Change the 10-8 to 10-9 etc for future versions, the link should stay the same

In my opinion VAIO update application is simply broken by bad design. Yes, it can download and optionally install updates in the background, just like Windows update. However, Windows update does not demand that an ordinary user types an administrator password on every login or reboot. If you and your wife are not seeing that message, this means that both use a user account that DOES have administrator privileges (Yes, most home users use Windows this way, but this is a BAD practice for security of your PC. Any professional system administrator or a random Linux/Unix person will tell you this). Ideally, one should login into administrator account only to perform system management tasks. This practice has been around for decades in other operating systems, but Windows, due to its single user OS heritage from MS DOS era, still makes every user account an administrator by default, and many many broken applications are used to the fact that the user is usually is the administrator. Hence, they go broke if one is not an administrator.

Hi guys. i am all new here, but i have some info you might want to try. I own a VPCEB16FX US version and i had the sound when operating on battery, but it the sound stopped everytime i turned off ht bluetooth. So in my case what's making the noise is the bluetooth for some reason.

One question guys. My laptop has a series of driver updates out of date, but when i go to the Sony site and download them, they don't seem to install correctly so any help?

    Thanks!

Thanks for answer! Of course, i am very well aware what LED or glare means. Question lead to the point, if (sometimes so called) semi-glare full hd vaio EB is usable outdoor or in window behind user condition. LED was mentioned in context of higher amout of backlight compared to tubes. Higher backlight could push back glare effect a little - so can be an advantage compared to tube-glare one.
Not sure about US, but Europe's Vaio EB has NO LEDs in 1376*768 version. Not sure about LEDs in vaio EB full hd, but surely vaio EA 1600*900 version is LED. So some vaios E are LEDs backlighted some don't. Also vaio F full hd premium display (matt) has NO LED and US version either.

The question anyway still remains. Is full hd vaio EB usable outdoor or in window behind user condition? Whether it is LED or tube one..

    Hey guys!
I recently got a VAIO E 15 inch screen, and I got sick of the bloatware immediately so I pulled a semi-clean install.

Everything is working great but I have one tiny annoyance. Ever since I formatted, the horizontal scroll on the trackpad doesn't work in any application whatsoever, except for Windows Explorer.

Is there any way to fix this? I installed all the drivers, so I can't imagine that being the problem but I could double check, of course.

    Thanks in advance, guys!

I just ordered my 15" E Series Vaio and got this email :( :

"We expect your VAIO order to be shipped to you between 05.10.2010 and 12.10.2010. Please note that this is an
estimated shipping time. We will send you an update if this estimate changes."

I've read through a lot of this thread and know that this is standard, but is there any chance that it will ship on time or earlier? Uni starts on the 20th of September and do not want to go too long without a laptop :(

Wowww - received my laptop yesterday and can honestly say that I can't say one bad word about it :) everything works perfectly and quickly, looks stunning and thankfully the screen is amazing, actually too bright at full brightness, which is unexpected after all the negatives

Its so speedy and am playing games maxed out with great fps! Anyone thinking about buying a Vaio E - do it! :D

I didn't quite get you, but I am not aware of any non LED E series laptops. But I have heard the non HD one is not as good as the full HD one which I have.

Anyways, the "glare" depends on if you buy a glossy version or the matte version. I have a glossy version and I use it indoors so it's no problem for me, but if I am near a window, then yes glare is there on the screen, and it's quite difficult to see the screen.

    to Ayush:
Thank you for inside look! That's exactly what i was affraid of since loving being on the garden with my laptop. My last hope was (hopefuly) LED backlight on EB pushing back that glare effect. I really like design of EB but i also like that matt full hd display on europian vaio F which seems to be partly "window"proof. :) Gotta sacrifice richer colours then too. That's a bad Sophie's choice.

Finally ordered my EB last night :D
    Intel i5-520M
    6GB RAM
    Blu-Ray player (not writer)
    HD5650 card
    1920x1080 screen
    320GB HD

I ordered in Brown since matte black was showing unavailable, and I didn't want glossy! Anyone else got a brown one or any decent photos?
My estimate on the payment email was between 24.09.2010 and 01.10.2010, slightly better than the 6-7 weeks it suggested when I ordered.

if you dont find it on download(i dony have my laptop yet),

    1. Download a relevant version from torrent or rapidshare or the upload sites. It wont be illegal(well not exactly legal either, kinda like a defacto way of doing it) if you search for an OEM version, like Windows 7 Professional OEM.
    2. Then just enter your own key after installing.
    3. Then run software like Driver Magician or Driver Detective to search for drivers, if you dont find them for the vaio, ask people only for the vaio drivers(they might be more willing to upload them than entire iso's). or i believe you can get drivers from sony site.

The main reason I need the recovery discs is for the Sony bloatware. IE my Quick Launch Web button doesn't work, nor does the Sony Dock. Even with these files, I'd be happy with. Unfortunately Sony doesn't provide these downloads on their website.

Just if anyone is interested to know & from the UK.. I got a reply from Sony about the keyboard skins for the E series, & they said they don't do them here but to search on internet for suitable options - like I haven't done that already?! It was the reason I mailed them because I hadn't had any luck searching lol -sigh-

Once you have input your serial number in the link given above please go to the pre-installed section or click here Download and install Vaio Event Service and you will be able to use those buttons.

My three DVDs are of size 10.8 GB. It would be impractical to upload that much on a shared site.

Could someone with an EB series check something for me really quick in Device Manager? I was told on another forum to look under the "Storage Controllers" tab to check what Intel motherboard drivers my EB series is running, but I don't seem to actually have a "Storage Controllers" tab in my Device Manager. Instead, all I've been able to find is an "IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers" tab, which tells me I have: "Intel(R) 5 Series 4 Port SATA AHCI Controller, Version 9.5.4.1001".
Is this what you see in yours?
    Thanks :)

Got the horrible whining noise. I can barely find the laptop usable when I dread that every time I stop doing something it's going to make the high pitched noise.

How did this get past Sony quality control. Is there nothing that can be done?

VAIO Event Service is only one of five drivers/applications needed for all three buttons to work - one of which being Quick Web Access which, as Hannes said, isn't available to download on the support site, along with other value added software like WinDVD - you can only get those from the recovery DVDs/partition.
