Erm, why do you think that is low!? Its a 2.5 inch HD, if you had a SSD in there, its a fair question but you are not going to pull much more that what you are getting out of a mechanical drive.

    Hello,

To be honest, the transfer rate seems to be just about right, especially for a 2.5" drive. What remains a little questionable is the random seek time. 17ms seems to be a little excessive for a drive running at 7k.

before running that test, did you temporarily disable the antivirus?

Okay, final upgrade done! Caddy arrived, replaced DVD drive with the original 500GB disk the laptop came with. I think this'll be the last upgrade I do on this PC.

I actually picked EA series for portability, since 6lb is heavy to carry around, and I have a desktop as my main PC.
If I need 1920x1080 then I can just plug it into my monitor or TV.

    They also upgraded the CPU from i3 370M and i5 460M to i3 380M and i5 480M...
Man, I should have waited 2 more days to make the order, and it is $50 cheaper too...

    Chums,

I've had a couple of BSODs recently which I am 99.99% sure are being caused by my Atheros WLAN driver. I've downloaded the most recent version (9.2.0.113) from atheros.cz dated November 2010 but when I unzip the folder, there's no installed, just the following:

    athr.sys
    athrx.sys
    athrext (Security Catalogue)
    athrextx (Security Catalogue)
    netathr (Setup Information)
    netathrx (Setup Information)

Any tips on what to do to actually use these files to update my driver?

Find the wifi adaptor in the device manager, right click, update driver, browse to the folder

I believe you also need to download their *.inf file from the website. It is just above the "click to download" button. Just right click on the link, and save it to the location where you have unzipped the driver. (Some browser will open it as a text file in the browser if you just left click on it.)

Afterward, just do what Mythdat said.

Unfortnately, Windows keeps telling me my driver is already up-to-date which it quite obviously isn't.

    Any way around this?

hello everyone. I'm the same Tiezep that posted a lot on Tablet Pc Review. however, because of HP's crappy build quality, my old HP tablet pc died recently.

Anyway, using some of my disaster savings I went ahead and bought myself a Vaio VPCEA390X (i5 420m, ATI mobility 5650, 4gb ram, 320 gb 5400 rpm hdd)

I quite enjoy this computer, I love almost everything about it. Only 2 things bother me about this computer, 1st, I ordered mine in Matte Black because I hate finger prints, and as it turns out, the palm rest is very glossy (of all parts of the pc, why make the palm rest glossy?!). That, and how sony clocked the 5650 as slow as they possibly could. Still, this is the only pc I could find with a 5650 at only 14 inch's within $1000, and it does have solid build quality.

Aside for the AMD gpu clock tool, is there any mods that can make this 5650 run at the normal 550mhz/800 mhz memory that other 5650's run at without using the clock tool?

if not the gpu clock tool is not too much of a pain to use,

Yes, MSI afterburner works. If you set it to run on startup, you can have it automatically switch between your own set 3D and 2D profiles as needed. No hassle of having to do it manually every time you run a game.

I have a continuing problem since receiving my EB that eludes all attempts to even identify the underlying culprit. On about every third or fourth boot, the wireless icon in the system tray shows a blue circle in it, and the wireless network does not connect. The only error events I get are the rather ubiquitous LMS service/Intel error and a 1001 event error (computer not assigned an address by DHCP) - but these errors occur even without the wireless "crash", so it's hard to truly characterize the problem to a specific event ID code.

One thing I kniow for sure is that when the wireless hangs, the system will always hang on shutdown. I have to force a shutdown (press-hold power button). So all I can say for certain is that whatever is causing the wireless "blue circle" also sets me up for a hanging shutdown.

On most boots, this issue does not occur, and if the wiorless connects all the way, it never occurs as long as the system is running - only on those occassional reboots.

The system is rather vanilla - the problem is apparently not related to driver updates or newly installed apps, as it has occurred even after VAIO system reinstall.

    Any ideas greatly appreciated!

yeah... MSI afterburner is not working at all.

it will not let me overclock at all (450 mhz is at max for core, 790 is max for memory)

Disabled a bunch of crap in msconfig's startup tab, including all Adobe stuff and all Sony stuff except the battery program. Didn't do a thing to help. Every other (maybe every third) boot results in a blue donut over my wireless tray icon, and a hung shutdown to get out of it.

    Lo' everyone.

It pains me to say that due to dosh and such that I might have to scale back my laptop which means I might have to wave good bye to my new E-Series :(.

    Spec is as follows:

    VPCEA3C5E w/

    14", 1600x900
    i5-460
    HD Radeon 5650
    4GB DDR3 RAM
    240GB Vertex 2E SSD
    Blu-Ray player
    Windows 7 Home Edition

Without the SSD, the laptop cost me £820 so I was thinking with the SSD (which cost me £200), about £950 would be about right seeing as I've only been using it for a month (arrived 13th Dec 2010).

Any ideas about where I could go about offering it out?

For those who have wiped their E-Series, which drivers have you decided to reinstall?

As far as I can see, the only really necessary ones are:

    - ATI GFX
    - Atheros WLAN
    - Realtek Sound
    - Synaptics Touchpad Driver
    - Intel Rapid Storage Technology Driver (if you have an SSD)

Windows 7 seems to do a fine job with the rest - Bluetooth, SD Card, etc.

Anyone know why Sony provide an Intel Graphics Driver when the E-Series comes with ATI Radeon cards?

Also, is it best to source all the drivers from their respective manufacturers or use the Sony ones? Or a combo of the two?

I used a pre-downloaded version of Catalyst 10.12 (because the web installer is black listed by sony).

when that installed my video card showed up as ATI mobility 5600/5700 in ATI CCC and device manager. Windows update has a driver for the 5650, so I dl'd and installed that too, and those in conjunction make a fully functional Catalyst 10.12 that actually recognizes my 5650.

AMD's gpu clock tool works fine, even with MSI afterburner working now I still prefer AMD's clock tool.

then I took care of the intel drivers, and used a multi-touch hp driver for my synaptics touch pad (multi-touch scrolling)

As for other drivers I let windows update install them for (yay, lazy!)

However, I did have to re-install the instant on browser, which is available on sony's site :D

You will probably find that you are actually using the older windows drivers since you installed them over the 10.12's, but since the windows version is just a driver you will still be running the 10.12 profile.

If everything is running fine then who cares really, but if you encounter any issues that might be a cause.

Yup, the fans spin up intermittantly on mine as well, even when the laptop isn't hot at all. Infact, just opening a new tab in Firefox is enough to get the fans in my VPCEA going.

It seems like the Corel WinDVD BD software that's bundled with our notebooks is some kind of a crippled version of the full WinDVD package. Today I tried to enable Dolby Headphone audio effects and noticed that there is no way to do it. You can't change the device type from 2-speaker system, DSP options and enhancements are not available, etc. It seems surprising that in this time and age you still need to buy software for this stuff..

I just bought a brand-new Vaio US-VPCEA490X (E series). There is a fairly constant high pitched hum coming from the fan. It's quiet, but noticeable and wearing on my ears. Is this normal and something I should have Sony fix under my warranty?

The problem is getting worse - multiple boots required to get the blue donut out of the bars. When the donut is there nothing happens across the internet. I am clueless but suspect this laptop is just not going to work for me. I'm starting to miss my old Thinkpad, and am regretting making the move to VAIO. Seems to stand for Vaio Always Is Offline.

In regard to this being addresses several times and clarified my MythDat, the high pitched squeal is due to the fact that your processor uses a certain technology (C3/C6 STEPPING) to give your laptop a longer battery life. Unfortunately some other components (CONDENSERS) on the laptop are not fully compatible when this new technology comes into effect and in effect, they resonate and you hear the whine. Therefore the logical solution would be to make the laptop not use the technology. This would be done by entering the BIOS setup (think its F2 OR F10) when the laptop starts, go to advanced and turn off C3/C6 Stepping. Please note that this has some effect on battery life. If you are a heavy application user requiring a lot of processing power without the power cable in, then you WILL notice the difference. However if you are a casual user, then turn it off and no more whine.

Mostly all laptops have bluetooth nowadays. For the mouse you can try reinstalling the ALPS POINTING DEVICE software. But to me it looks like it could possible be a hardware fault and you may have to call up support to discuss a replacement.

I checked temperatures from my eb1s1 with hwmonitor and the readings were extremely high. Could these be just false sensor readings or is my laptop really running so hot?
Speedfan and everest gave similar readings

    ------min: max:
    ACPI: 46'C 98'C
    CPU: 45'C 99'C
    GPU: 46'C 97'C

The minimun temp readings are from right after powering up and the maximum temps are while playing far cry 2. The system is running stable, no crashes or hang ups what so ever. The laptop is always on a table and dust should not be an issue. Any help or opinions would be greatly appreceated.
