-How do you stop the useless caching and indexing in the background?

-How do you turn on the "tapping" feature?

yeah its the $2499 one, and actually its not more expensive than in canada because i calculated that after the conversion, the one here in singapore is actually only about CAN$1600 whereas the SR ordered online from sony canada, after taxes and shipping is about CAN$1800-$1900 :D

plus i get the freebies from the show like the carrying bag, mouse, free upgrade to 4gb ram, etc. ;)

I have been using the SR for 3 days now, and its just amazing! Everything about it is just perfect. Its quiet, looks awesome, doesnt heat up, is verryy light and ya contarary to what others say, I found it thin. I carry it to school and it feels like I'm just carrying a couple of notebooks in my bag! I dont have anything to complain as such. As with any other vaio, this one comes with large number of bloatware which might affect the overall performance. The speakers could have been better. Overall, its arguably the best 13.3" laptop in the market.

Why sony installs bloat**** with their laptops beats me.

Nobody likes it... not just Business people (why business only one with fresh install option?) but ALMOST EVERYONE hates bloat****.

    1. People hate the crap
    2. It's a waste of time to have to uninstall it
    3. It NEGATIVELY affects performance and battery life...don't you want people to get the best performance so they know its a great laptop they just purchased?

Didnt expect the speakers to blow this much. basically have to play everything 5 volume bars down to avoid buzzing and cracking. oh well

Actually i found if i hold down the outside edge of both speakers or lift up the edges of the keyboard above the speakers, the vibrating noises go away maybe theres a way to fix this

If only i wasnt so scared of taking apart my laptop.

    -edit

sticking this peice of paper folded a few times in between the hinge/keyboard peice made my speakers lose the vibration noises. i can play everything at max volume with no buzz. if only it looked better

Amex credit card gives you 1 additional year.

If you don't game newer stuff, get Intel

If you do game modern stuff, get ATI

If you want max battery life, get Intel

Does anyone know the proper way of doing a clean install on the SR yet, like what programs/drivers are useless, and in what order to reinstall the necessary stuff?

I agree, with all the **** bloatware on their systems, you'd think they would offer their computers at a cheaper price than the competitors with all the ads we have to put up with, but its the exact opposite.

Are you saying that people that have the SR with Vista Business can have a clean install?

And by clean you mean just Windows and drivers, right? not Office, Anti virus, e other crap....

Here in Portugal we are pretty much stuck with the Business edition, but now it seems it's a good thing :)

yes but you also must select "fresh start" option when you customize it. otherwise, they assume you want the bloatware :D

The best way is to deselect the vaio apps on startup and/or disable related services. That way u can still keep these apps without having to bother about them eating up the cpu and memory.

I've noticed people doing a clean install on the SR having a few issues with some firmware and drivers (Fingerprint scanner, maybe some others I can't remember). Have these issues been resolved? I'm getting my SR on Tuesday or Wednesday and I have Vista disks so I'm thinking of doing a clean install but I want to have use of everything.

to be honest the battery drain issue it is a much bigger problem than that ...
because uninstall and stop services on Vista or XP it is not a real problem  ...
But having faulty firmware´s and electronics that drain battery when they should not ,,, this is a REAL problem ! As users cant do SH**T about it! :( just wait for SONY to do what ?!?

The battery drain issue....? Didn't other threads conclude that it is just simply windows incorrectly reading the battery time more than anything else?

I know that people are making this out to be some serious deal-breaking issue. But, as of yet, i have not noticed any battery drain, i keep my vaio plugged in at night, or when im not travelling and have yet to notice any problems with the battery.

Another person in one of the threads brought it to the attention of Sony, who said it shouldn't be doing that or something. I don't know if it ever fixed his problem though, I haven't seen him around since he was supposed to get a new battery or something. I guess he said Sony said it was a faulty battery.... but I don't know if that would be entirely accurate. Since they still keep the same length of charge, but eh. Most people's Vista laptops I know sometimes don't even say the length of time, just percent (some aren't accurate either).

Guess its a real issue as I tried turning my laptop on and it just refused to start! I had to plug in the charger to start it. I believe the battery wasnt that low before I turned it off. So it should not act so strange unless the battery is 'critically' low.

Hmm, so how would I go about disassembling the keyboard on one of these things?

Someone caused an accident, and I just now realized that it caused the \ key to become sticky and not as nice feeling to use. -.- Now it's really bugging me. How would one go about taking off this style of key from this keyboard? I need to -try- and clean it.

After two weeks of using my notebook i was able to undervolt my pc with RMClock and avoid using pressing the mouse buttons cause they are sort of loud.
I changed synaptics setting i made upper right area to do a left click and i have practically avoided using the noisy buttons. I just need to get used to the double tapping hold etc.
I was able to undervolt my P8400 with these settings

    0 superLFM x6.0 .8250v
    1 normal x6.0 .8250v
    2 normal x7.0 .8500v
    3 normal x8.0 .8875v

    SO far so good.

Ohh, yay, that's good to hear! I was hoping that I could just take that approach.

I think it also got under my right arrow key. I'll try it on the \ key first though, as that's not really as important as the -> key.

Thank you for telling me, and I hope I can clean it out well enough. xD

*edit* Kosmonoko- Have you noticed any differences in temperatures in undervolting? Are you testing it both temp and battery life wise? I would be very interested in undervolting, as I don't play too many games with my laptop often and I often just use it on battery.

Hmm, it looks like the arrow keys are seated differently. I can't get the right arrow to sit properly back in place... I couldn't even remove it. It has some kind of weird plasticy stuff that is gripping it into place....

Anyone know the part number and where to directly order the keyboard part?

I need a replacement keyboard now. It's not easy at all to clean these keys, it seems to have gotten somewhere inside beyond the outside, and now my left arrow key won't work well.

and my \ key won't reseat properly, it is now sticking up from the keyboard (hitting the screen now it looks like).

Hey guys I am new to the forum. I am interested on buying the viao sr. I have read several reviews on how great it is but I was wondering if you had any tips for me when I go to order my computer. I do want to custom build it. My thoughts are 2.4 or 2.5 if its worth it and I want 4gb or ram(speed). Any input or advice would be greatly appreciated thank you.

From what I understand, if you might potentially challenge a 2.4 Ghz processor to its max, then get the 2.5. If you don't use applications that will utilize all the speed of a 2.4 then stick with 2.4.

For RAM, Vista 32 Bit (which is what sony provides) only uses something like 3.2 GB RAM. Vista 64 Bit would use all 4. So it's up to you. If you want it future proof, get 4 GB. I recommend just buying 2 GB from sony then buy another 2 GB Stick somewhere else for cheaper. Very very easy to install.

I just got the black SR190 with Vista Business. sonystyle says it comes with Works 9.0SE. I don't see it anywhere in the start menu, I wonder if it really only comes with Home Premium systems? I already uninstalled the trial Office. I got the SonyStyle store I bought from to match the free Home & Student Office option from the CTO version online so I don't really need it but am curious.

What were the original voltage settings? I have a Z with the p8400 and rmclock won't let me set the voltage below .90v. I know there are some registry settings in rmclock that lets you set the voltage lower, but those values are ignored by the cpu itself.

If you run the "coretemp" application you can see the real voltage.

Is anybody using Google Chrome as their browser? It seems that the scroll down/up function on the touchpad (two fingers on the side) is kinda screwy, I can scroll down, but not back up. Yet, in Opera, it works perfectly, both up and down.
