Official VAIO SR Series Owners Thread

Hi!

Please help me, I need a quick answer on this.

I'm on the way of ordering a SR with the Blu Ray drive and ATI/HDMI.

I plan to use it as my BluRay player on a HomeTheater setup via HDMI.
I will also use it to play other video and media as the primary content source on the setup.

Will it output multichannel audio over the HDMI?
(Dolby Digital, DTS, PCM, etc)

I hope it will, if not, how can I output the digital audio to my receiver?
Does the audio output jack also function as a digital out?

Will other Vaios do this? (Z, FW)

Please help me here!
I have little time to decide.

1st help out Paulo as he is more desperate than I am time-wise but my question is "Is the Vaio SR a great replacement for my various laptops?" If you check slickdeals dot net there is a trade in deal right now for $450 rebate check from SONY for trading in a Dell. I am thinking of trading in my Dell d630 as I like using the docking station but the station is almost as big as the laptop and it runs a little slow for my taste. And I have had various "little" issues with it since the day I got it. I also have a used Sony TXN15 I am thinking of selling. I am hopeful that with the docking station, the SR220 would satisfy my need to have a portable laptop and a desktop (I will hook it up to a 24" monitor I currently own). Or let me ask this "Is there a reason you would not suggest I trade in my 2 laptops for the Sony SR220?" TIA

 

If you can imagine yourself carrying around something roughly the size as your d630 but a little lighter I would say go for it. Not sure if you'll notice a speed increase though since the d630 is already like a T7100 C2D

 

Did any one successfully install windows 7 64x on their SR? with everything working like, battery care, mode switch, bluetooth, finger scan. I installed it today, but i m having trubles, it says my battery is not compatible with the laptop, but its the stock battery

Oh what did you do after you installed it? cause it also says i m missing 2 drivers in device manager

 

hmmm opps i only got 1 missing driver which is base system device

 

base system device? did you get the driver from sony support?

 

hmmm i dont know which driver to download you know how to solve it?

 

did you download every vista 64x driver from sony suport?

 

i try to install it but i was unable to install it.

 

"Base System Device" is the Ricoh Memory Stick Controller. Google for the driver.

yea the ricoh one, installed it, and 1 of the missing drivers disappeared

yea 7100, just downloaded it right off micrsoft

You should be able to google your question.

 

I'm not sure if this helps, but this is the properties of my SR-290's hdmi out. I'm able to check/uncheck any of the dts/dolby/microsoft boxes. I have no home theater to test it on though.
The headphone jack is just a standard jack. I don't believe it does digital out.

Hi SR Owners (and secret lovers),

Can any one enlighten me as to when the SR390 will be available in Canada? I really want one. Almost enough to drive across the border and grab one but then the warranty is void.

No one can give me an answer. Sony Style Retail Store rep told me "sometime." It was truly a moment worthy of MENSA notice.

haha its okay, i ended up getting it to work. I found that the driver was gone once i installed the utilities, and shared library

 

Does anyone know how to disable the touchpad?its annoying me with i type

I dont have the option to disable. Only uninstall. I can disable my usb mouse and thats it

does anyone know how to find arcsoft's magic-i visual effects? I want to reinstall it..but all i m finding is the 2nd one and i have to pay 40 dollars for that

 

I've found the ArcSoft WebCam Companion, but not the Magic-i Visual stuff.

 

yea i found the webcam companion on sony support. Hmm, i might just have ti revert to vista and find a way to extract the software to a usb from the recovery disc

 

I just got my SR220 delivered yesterday and it is one sweet laptop! The screen is the best I've seen and it runs quietly. Very very happy. Of course, I was forewarned about the amount of crapware that would be on it - WHOA. I deleted all the obvious ones but have am wondering if I removed something that would cause the screen to be black and just display a _ cursor on the screen when I first turn on the computer? I then get the blank screen followed by the Windows screen. Just curious if I uninstalled an app that is now causing it to do that?

I ordered my SR390 through PortableOne on April 28, they still haven't received it from Sony yet. And it just got delayed to first week of June .. Sigh. Get your act together Sony !

 

That might mean that sony is changing to the SR490 series...who knows? Not that the series numbers seem to mean ANYTHING in particular...some have minor hardware options, but most of the time not much... and there seems to be zero difference in terms of exterior design, etc.

 

Yeah I don't think there is a major difference between 190/290/390 .. just updated hardware options .. I hope the wait is worth it for my 390 ..

 

Hey guys, has anyone experienced a loud fan issue with your SR? My SR290 has been acting up...I sent it for repair and they "replaced" the HD, but after a week it's acting up again ><...

 

I was able to extract all exes for all programs using the mod2wim and 7zip programs. The mod2wim should extract the wims automatically, but I had problems with this and had to use 7zip to extract the wims into exes. Once extracted, they work great and can used with windows 7. The naming sucks on these so I went through and tried to install each one to see what it was. I will be going through and doing this again after partition master failed while removing my recovery partition and putting that space into my shared volume (i run 3 partitions, one for win 7, one for vista and one for storage).

 

Is it common to have a problem with the AC adapter where the plug likes to stay in the laptop a little too much? Nowadays, if I insert the adapter all the way, I have to pry it from the laptop with a lot of force to remove it, and I don't know what's wrong.
