Does anyone else have a problem with th ecomputer making "ding" noises choppily after you backspace too much?
-
-
Have you insatalled BIOS update?
-
Yes. It also happens if you backspace too much.
I hate that sound. -
hm, i cant remember, but I'm going to say no. I usually don't do bios updates unless I'm having a problem. too risky.
-
Oh.
Do you know what could it be? -
It happens on other computers too, but this one gets scratch and glitchy when backspace is pressed too much. Is there a way to fix this?
-
Thanks man, darn it its different from the ebay one,
. Guess i will have to settle for that then. sigh
-
I am ready to pull the trigger on this one but the only thing nagging me is the advent of the Arrandale CPU in 2010. I am just afraid of missing out on something really revolutionary. Do you guys think the vaio sr 4th generation will update its line in 2010 to include the Arrandale CPU? And is that new platform worth waiting an extra year?
-
well, i guess i can really say is, its up to you. If you wish to get quad core cpu then wait for it. But when i bought my SR, i was always wondering if i should wait or not. But then someone told me, technology will always change and isn't something you can catch up with, unless you have the money to change laptops every year. When i found that the SR had a even better GPU i was sad, but i just remembered at the time, it was a good deal and i m satisfied with my purchase. Hope this helps.
-
Just realized this, too, although it was working after standby the other day. At least the brightness is still adjustable through windows...
- Eli -
You are still good mate, I can't change it by ANY METHOD
-
I bought the SR430 at J&R days ago and I tried to fill the pre-qualification form for the $100 MIR. Then the system told me that the serial number I filled in exists already. Then darn it and I cannot proceed my MIR. Dropped an email to their Customer Service and haven't got any response yet. Anyone has the same experience? Is there a way to go around this?

I have the same problem. I wiped my vista drive to install windows 7 except now sony notebook utilities won't install and gives me that error. Also, the BIOS won't update either and gives me the error as well. Another problem I'm having is that there is a windows.old folder thats taking up quite a bit of space, and I can't seem to delete it from my drive.
Any fixes for being able to install the updates and getting rid of windows.old? -
I am luckly to make image of SR in W7 and Vista. I do this right after I install and activate my OS and my Office 07. That way, it is only activated ONCE.
I use this free software and it works in W7: http://www.macrium.com/reflectfree.asp
I learn it from someone here. It makes a bootable CD and you can get to your USB hd using your USB mouse and restore your image from there.
If my BIOS doesnt update, then I will do my image back to Vista and do it. After life does work in this case.
I just update my BIOS and it work for me.
I see that I can enable and disable the VT. Is that what some of you are talking about? -
If you chose to install to the same partition with a pre-existing Windows OS, and did not tell the installer to format the partition and you chose not to keep the pre-existing OS, then when Windows installs and it detects this, I believe it just renames it to Windows.OLD. You aren't dual-booting, correct? If not, then I guess it's fine to delete it, since these are the system files for the old OS. You mentioned that you wiped your Vista drive though, are you sure you did that?
-
The problem is that when I select windows.old and delete it, it keeps getting to files that the system cannot delete.
-
You can try deleting it from the command line, or use a utility like Unlocker, which will override this restriction. There were probably some system files with particular permissions that prevent conventional deletion.

I tried bing cashback today.....apparently New York seceded from the United States and I don't qualify for cashback as I'm not a US resident....boo-urns
Guess this scraps my plans of getting a new laptop... -
This problem with pressing backspace too many times is really getting to me. Pretty much in an chat program and in the address bars of browsers, if you press backspace too much and ther'es no text left, the computer makes a ding. Well, there are a lot of dings that keep going on if you press backspace a bunch of times. Is there any possible way to fix this?
-
I put my computer to sleep by closing the lid. The button light glow red.
Open the lid again, turn it on from sleep and I can dim or bright my screen using the F5/F6 key.
Some of you have this problem?
I am in W7 RTM. -
I disabled that sound in the control panel; problem solved
-
Has anyone here upgraded their HDD? What did you go with?
I want to get either a Seagate Momentus 7200.4 or WD Scorpio Black, but don't want to risk it causing my SR to get really hot
Suggestions? -
Guys, I'm losing my wifi connection every couple of minutes and it's getting extremely frustrating. I fix it by disconnecting/connecting to my network. What is causing this? ERGGG
edit: tried another router, same problem. can now rule out the router.
edit2: downloads / torrent uploads continue to run while connected, but internet does not
? -
Have you tried updating wireless drivers (Intel, I'm guessing)? Second thing I would do is check out the router log to see what's going on. Third thing is change wireless settings on the router (not sure if you've done that), change channels, don't let the router auto-choose the channel, change encryption types, etc.
Just wanted to mention that WD's BLACK edition is their high performance consumer hard drives in the desktop space, so I assume the Scorpio BLACK would be something similar, which probably means it's not going to be cool running (relative to other drives), and it spins at 7200rpm. I don't have any experience with Seagate Momentus drives. -
So this could be Sony's problem. I'm worried that when Windows 7 update comes it'll likely say "not intended to use with your computer"
-
I noticed in this image, on the left hand side of your notebook there is a sticker which says "FullHD 1080p". Now I wonder why this is there since the native resolution of this machine is 1280x800. Does this pertain to FullHD output via HDMI to some other external monitor/LCD?
Furthermore when I visited a Sony outlet and looked at the display units of VAIO Z and VAIO SR and VAIO FW there, I noticed this sticker ONLY on the SR and FW, but NOT on the Z. I wonder why?? -
I've actually asked the Sony Style employees this same question and never got a real answer. They either said it was a mistake or some other garbage. The Z produces 720p footage and the SR can't even do that. However if you consider the stickers to be for the HDMI ports on the system then yes all are capable of 1080p output.
and for those of you with the Windows.old, thats what happens when you dont tell windows 7 to format the drive before installing. It literally takes all your old files and puts them into one giant folder, and then installs 7 as the primary OS. and no you cannot dual boot like this. You can only dual boot vista and 7 if you have separate partitions/drives for each. -
Is this updating the latest bios? I just did it yesterday and no problem.
I can confirm on my SR, I am seeing 1080p. Thats the resoluation at 1920x something. -
quick question guys, whoever owns an SR430 can they press down on the plastic right underneath the space bar and right above the touchpad and see if it makes any noise?
-
im pretty sure ive already done the update but to make sure i tried redownloading it...."this is not a valid win32 application"....?
-
Funny you'd say that. I am given to believe that the graphic card in the new SR is the ATI HD 4570 512MBwhere as the one n the Z is the NVIDIA 9200M GS 256MB. Shouldnt the SR's card be more powerful/advanced than the Z's. So what exactly do you mean by Z produces 720p footage and the SR can't even do that? Are you refering to being able to watch 720p footage on the Z or is it something else. Sorry I just couldnt quite get it.
Ans yes none of the sales guys are actually qualified to be there, so they really have no idea whatsoever.
Sorry I'd like to ask one more thing, just in case I was considering between the Z or the SR and had in mind to learn a little bit of 3d graphic designing and animation like Autodesk 3d Max, Maya, Architecture etc (although I know both machines arent suitable), which one do you think would be able to run the above software so that I would be able to merely learn - nothing advanced. No one has been able to answer this question quite fully yet. Would I be able to install these softwares on both these machines? Can the Z handle these softwares at all? Thanks
P.S. - Just wanted to add that I have no idea whatsoever about 3d stuff or animation, so not really keen to buy a very dedicated machine for it. The purpose is to just learn it as a hobby. My priority is portability. -
When i said the Z can play 720p i was referring to its actual screen resolution. 720p runs at 1366x768 or around there. The vaio SR's resolution isn't that high let alone its also a 16x10 screen vs the Z's 16x9.
as for running the 3d design programs. I have no idea. the Z is a powerful machine with every component in it being better than whats in the SR except for the GPU. -
The Vaio SR resolution is: 1280 x 800
720p's resolution is: 1280 x 720
I think you are mistaken.
And both laptops can have the same hardware, except for the 4570 which is SR exclusive - save yourself some money and get the SR. -
Raeglatem, yeah sorry mate. Now I get what you mean. I was thinking about the 800 pix height in the SR but didnt give any thought to the width!!
. You're right there.
xSDMx
Damn you're right too. I guess it may be one of those DUH moments for me.
-
Actually its the GPU that worries me. Athough I have been reading a few posts here and there where many students talk about working on the 9300M GS, but every one keeps talking about getting higher specs for optimum use, no one says anything concrete about the fact whether these programs can actually run with the 9300M Gs or not. If they can I'd buy the Z, if not then I'd have to buy the SR as wouldnt have much choice left where I am based as these are the lightest in what they offer.
-
I think it's not standby/sleep anymore, but whenever the screen turns off. I restarted my computer ealier, and brightness was working as normal. It was plugged in, and I left it sitting around for an hour or two, came back, and could no longer adjust the brightness with the function keys. I have it set to never go standby when plugged in, so that can't be the only cause.
Also happens if I use hibernate instead of sleep (I hate that glowing red light now hehe)
I am also using Windows 7 RTM -
Try these: turn off IPv6 if your router doesnt support. Also try changing your Wireless adapter's wireless mode to 802.11b/g (excluding 802.11a). Following step is not recommended. Updading Wi-Fi adapter's driver (only) from Intel's site. Sorry for continious paragraph- i'm typing from my phone.
-
Where do I turn off the IPv6?
-
guy came to replace the optical drive, and its more loose then it was before. i just ordered a new one from J&R...hell if it comes with the same loose faceplate ill just keep it anyway since im getting more cashback this time around, and already have an image of win7
-
I'm pretty sure I've read somewhere that this 1080p means output over HDMI, because the laptop screen is definitely not displaying 1080p. It can display 1080p material that has been scaled down, but definitely not 1080p if we're talking about pixels.
Hmm, not sure what that error means. If you're running 64-bit you need the 64-bit file, same for 32-bit. Unless the file you downloaded was corrupted. -
Hey you're absolutely right sorry i was thinking of television 720p resolutions. my mistake.
-
i used this remedy few weeks ago due to the blank screen syndrome when resuming from sleep or hibernate. but i also realized that my F5/f6 brightness buttons have been working all the time since then. i read some of u have this problem, and maybe this can help.

Ok so my SR comes in a week, anyone know any good messenger bags that hold this baby comfortably and secure? The bag also needs to hold at least 1+ college textbooks (organic chem and such). Thanks.
-
can someone help me with the SR mobility bundle promotion? what do I put for business name?
-
OMG I love you!
I stopped that service, and now I can change my brightness again woooooooot! Just to note, the service name has changed to AMD External Event Utility
I just put Home lol -
did you guys have to send UPc from box for mobility bundle or could u just photocopy?
-
the actual one, if you send a copy, they will send you a mail saying something like, we request the actual upc, you sent us a copy.
-
I think that part was optional, i left it blank
-
I think this forum is unorganised.
Alot of questions has been asked repeated and repeated.

I am only making a suggestion. I know I am one of dam that ask questions that had been repeated before. -
