I know the noise is there since day one. In a room with a relatively quiet ambient background, then it's impossible to hear anything. Taking it to a completely quiet room, no other noise at all, when you can hear the hard drive making subtle noises, then the fan noise is clearly audible.

So, when the SR is docked, the OS will see a second network adapter (ie. the one residing on the docking station) which is gigabit capable?

I thought perhaps when docked, the ethernet plug for the SR is simply re-directed to the docking station (from the one on its side) with the same 10/100 PHY being used.

Does this mean both network jacks could be used at the same time?

I have no idea why that is the case. :(

However, do note that the screenshot I posted is of my Vaio Z notebook. Maybe, the Vaio Power Management software for the Vaio Z & SR notebook offers slightly different options?

To me, I would say SR is the quietest machine I have ever used. At the completely quiet room, the spin of harddisk is even as loud as the fan. On the hand, it proves how quiet the fan could be.

Never expect these core 2 laptops to be completely silent. No technique so far can fully mute the noise from the high-speed physical spin.

Your SR must have came with BIOS version R3220Y1 ? I upgraded to that version and it has the VT enable setting in it.

    Hi all SRers,
need some helps here, I have SR 290 with Mobile Intel® Graphics Media Accelerator 4500MHD, and I want connect it to TV through VGA. I bought a VGA cable off ebay and connect it TV using RCA(three colors cable). However, nothing show on the TV even I tried connect to external display in setting. Does anyone know how? or simply 4500MHD doesn't have TV out function.
    Thanks in advance.

When the Vaio notebook is off, turn it on by pressing the power button. Then repeatedly press the F2 button. You will be able to get into your notebook's BIOS. Good luck. :)

LOL, That is too funny. It looks just like a Mac, priced like a Mac and comes with low end hardware like a Mac. On top of that the SR is still better with a lower price point, lol. Too funny!

If you're going to try and make ReadyBoost work somewhat well for you, you will want to have a high speed flash device; most of the cheap ones are very slow speed (1MB/s, etc).

Anyone know any kind of programs that make typing equations/formulas easy? I know there is a way to use special characters in MS office, but it is a slow process. Basically I take a lot of classes where the notes we take are heavy on the formula side and I would love to have some easier way than to come up with my own system.

Can anyone tell me how the new SR's do on color reproduction?

Example: http://forum.boxee.tv/ The header should be a rich lime green.

On my SR290, the LCD shows a duller green. Not really lime at all. Sony replaced the LCD but even the new one is a duller green. (I've tried ati color settings, color profiles, etc) Is this because of the ATI cards they're using being bad?

So I recently just got an SR420d and am bummed that it doesn't support virtualization. I think because it has the T6500 CPU in it. I love the SR thought because it's light and portable but, also has a decent video card.

Does anyone know if the SR with the P8700 supports virtualization? How much quicker would the P8700 be over the T6500? I'd have to pay a restocking fee and the P8700 is more. Is it worth it?

I emailed Sony about the battery drain problem and here's their response:

    Trung Nguyen,

Thank you for contacting Sony Support.

I'm sorry that the Computer is completely turned off but the Battery is still being drained. The Battery of the Notebook will continue to drain even when it is completely turned off because the Computer constantly uses a small amount of power to maintain different built-in tools and functions. This is by design and is normal operation.

To avoid having the Battery drain completely, periodically attach the AC Adaptor and recharge the Battery.

NOTE: The Battery will drain an average of 10-15% a day, even when off, depending on the environment, temperature, and power requirements of the enabled software tools and functions.

I have provided a link* with the information to troubleshoot the Battery charge that does not last as long as it should:

    http://www.kb.sony.com/selfservice/d...nalId=C1001422

*You may be asked to enable or allow the link to work.

    Thank you for choosing Sony.

    The Sony Email Response Team
    C6XR
    Nicholas

But this is just a problem with Vaio notebook right, not the other brands?

Nah, he just said that this drain is "normal" and it's used to maintain "different built-in tools and functions". So I ask if this's just with Vaio notebook and if that's true, I'll bash them again ;)

And hey Garmin, could you please let me know if your Nano VX is 800dpi or 2000dpi? Thanks!

Must be something hardware based, because when shut off or in hibernate (which shouldn't be using any power), there is still drain.

I recommend the V450 if you like to have a longer battery life (last I heard it was a few months vs a year, maybe it's different now), but you lose the side buttons and some other stuff with the V450. I use this as a mobile mouse, so I decided I didn't need a full-featured mouse but needed one with long battery life.

I think a driver for the Motion Eye is already installed by default. If you want to use the webcam to take pictures of yourself, then I think you just need the Arcsoft software from support page. Otherwise, if, for example, you initiate a video chat in an IM client, it should load on its own and activate the camera. I went to meebo and started a video chatroom for myself, and the Flash-driven software activates the Motion Eye and it works fine.

Not sure about that, sorry. I've seen mention of it across the forum, but that's going to be hard to find. IMO, I don't think it's (hard drive protection) is really necessary; most of the time the computer's sitting on my desk; if I pick it up to move it some place I usually close the lid so it goes into standby. The major purpose is to park the drive head if it senses a fall, right? And I don't think I work "mobilely" enough to be in a situation where I'm holding the laptop in one hand while working and at risk of it falling. In Vaio Control center, the hard drive protection seems to be activated, but I'm not sure if it's actually working, since none of the meters on the side move (is this the same with everyone else?).

Go to sony support page to download the driver for it, just use the vista drivers, they are the same as win 7

as for my vs nano, i m sure it was 800dpi, cause i know for a face it wasnt that high, but i m fine with it, been using it for almost a year and i love it. I change batteries ever 5 months or so. On a 12-16 hours per day usage

Did you extract the files using one of those EXE unpackers, and then executing the EXE file there? Another option is to run in Vista compatibility mode, similar to the installation of some of the other drivers.

    Hi Guys,

I hope that someone on here can help me. I have a VGN-SR26GN/S and my girlfriend accidently spilled coffee over the touch pad and fingerprint scanner. I am trying to get hold of a service manual so I can open her up and clean out the coffee (fingerprint scanner and touchpad buttons are not working). I have scoured the web and was unable to find anything. Any help would be appreciated.

Anyone know if its possible to access the advanced BIOS option in the SR? All i get are stupid basic options like boot device and system time.... I'm trying to see if my hardware VT is enabled or not seeing as my systems registers as capable.

Also for battery life, I have the ATI card and the p8700 with the 7200rpm harddrive and get approximately 4 hours straight at highest brightness and wifi on. This is all on the Large capacity battery.

Can someone do me a couple favors?

    (1) Explain what virtualization is.
    (2) Is virtualization needed to run VMWare?
    (3) Is it possible to enable virtualization on a SR420J/B? I've updated the BIOS to version R3220Y1 but did not see an option to enable it.

    Thanks!

You won't see the option for VT in the BIOS unless you update your BIOS with the latest one from the support site.
