When you get the free upagrade disc from sony, can you do a fresh install rather than an 'upgrade' with this disc? I want to wipe Vista, not install upgrade over top of it? I noticed on Sony's instruction site there seems to be a choice between upgrade and 'custom' which seems to suggest a clean install?

How did you manage to do that? -
HELP HELP HELP!!!!
So my 2 month old SR490 has a problem. The entire left hand of the screen has vertical lines running down it. Theres no physical abuse on the system, and I've tried updating all my drivers, reinstalling the video card... dont know what else is left. I've called sony and have a "on site tech" coming god knows when. I really need this system up and running again. Please, anyone with any help I greatly appreciate it. -
I see a few more files there now!
-
anyone get their upgrade for win7 yet? seems like its taking forever to send them out with their "customized aka bloatware" discs.
-
My SR290 is working pretty good with Win 7 and the Vista drivers now, but I'm really looking forward to a fresh re-install with proper Win 7 drivers. It seems like they're adding one or two a day so it shouldn't be long now!
-
Yup, same here. The only problem I have is the brightness control through Fn and the OSD for volume do not work after coming back from a hibernate. But otherwise it seems to be doing fine. They just loaded a bunch of new drivers today
Now I have to figure out the proper order to install things.

-
So my screen is still dead/dying... idk what is wrong with it. 2 months and 5 days old and half the LCD is bugging out... white vertical stripes running down the entire length of the screen.
Anyone here have any experience with Sony's On site tech's? Any info on them? Do they bring spare parts with them or are they coming first time to identify the issue, then come back again to repair it? -
quite a few files listed now, plus they have an upgrade guide:

Where can I get 64 bit Windows 7 drivers from? And which ones do I install? Can I install other or similar SR drivers? Or do I have to install ones exactly for my model?
I have a VGN-SR26GN and there is no support for it on the US site, my model is an Asia-Pacific model and there is nothing on that region's support site for Windows 7. -
If I were you- First of all, I'd search for a exact same model that was released in US. Then I'll look in eSupport site and download drivers.ManUtdFC said: ↑Where can I get 64 bit Windows 7 drivers from? And which ones do I install? Can I install other or similar SR drivers? On eSupport site there's a instruction on which order you should install drivers and software. (Win 7)
Good luck. -
I'll have a look for the same model from the US site and give it a go.
Thanks. -
just a FYI, you cant upgrade your 32bit OS to a 64bit, you'll have to do a clean install if you want 64bit.poopinftw said: ↑HELP

Mate I have the same issue , best way (I just updated my SR46) is to get the files from the US/EU support pages.. and follow http://esupport.sony.com/US/perl/support-info.pl?info_id=508ManUtdFC said: ↑Where can I get 64 bit Windows 7 drivers from? as a guide on the order to install after the update/new install, also one issue with the US downloads is that they are package in such away to prevent them being installed on the wrong machine... just Google "Universal Unpacker" this will unpack the exe files and allow you to directly access the drivers

Hey everyone, when I receive my upgrade disk for Windows 7, will it include any bloatware? I'm considering weather to do a clean install or not on my SR430.
-
Sorry if this has been asked before but I couldn't find a definitive answer through searches. Can you put DDR3 RAM in the Vaio SR, even though it ships only with DDR2? I'm getting the P8800 processor with a 1066MHz FSB, so it seems like DDR3 would speed things up.
-
In short, no, you cannot install DDR3 when it only supports DDR2.samx1 said: ↑Sorry if this has been asked before but I couldn't find a definitive answer through searches. Speaking of Sony Win 7 drivers...
Windows Update today offered a Sony Firmware Extension Parser update for my SR290. No noticable change or effect yet, but it is progress...
Edit: Maybe not. I just checked the version number of the "new" driver in Device Manager (it shows up under Human Interface Devices) and it's v8.0.1.6087, the same version offered on Sony's site for Vista x64. Sigh... -
has anyone who applied for a free Windows 7 upgrade promotion on an SR430 received their copy of Windows 7?? I was under the impression it would be shipped out soon after it was released but I still haven't received any indication of this.

I guess my question is, does anyone know why the SR can't support DDR3 when the FSB of the CPU is fast enough to support it? Is it some limitation in the chipset being used? Does anyone know what the chipset is?heavenly_wild said: ↑In short, no, you cannot install DDR3 when it only supports DDR2.Click to expand...

anyone have the 590 yet? any signifigant changes?

No changes except for Windows 7.

I have a Universal Extractor question. I've used it to extract some driver files for my SR290 (as an experiment) and the resulting extraction gave me a folder containing a folder called "TEMPEXEFOLDER" as well as some individual files (see the attached image).
The "TEMPEXEFOLDER" has what looks like driver installation files (an executable, a .sys or two, an .inf, etc.).
Are the other files such as "EULA_FILE_USA" and "INSTALL_INI" necessary or can I (or should I) discard them before trying to install the drivers?
Thanks in advance!Attached Files:

I just cancelled my order for an HP Envy 15 and I've been looking into other options... I just found out about the Sony SR. So far it looks like it's a much better deal than say the Dell 13". It looks like the ATI 4570 is capable of 4000 in 3DMark06, which is pretty impressive considering it doesn't cheat with nvidia's fake SLI. Is the real world gaming performance good?

Sony choose to use DDR2 instead of DDR3 so you are stuck with it. My Acer has a similar chipset (both GMA 4500 based), yet Acer chose to use DDR3.samx1 said: ↑I guess my question is, does anyone know why the SR can't support DDR3 when the FSB of the CPU is fast enough to support it? Does the DDR2 really affect performance?
-
Jayayess1190 Waiting on Intel Cannonlake
Not really, but there DDR uses less power, 1.5V vs 1.8 in DDR2. Also DDR3 ram using 1.35V will be out soon.winkosmosis said: ↑Does the DDR2 really affect performance?Click to expand... -
Ah OK I finally got it. DDR3 physically will not fit the DDR2 slots in the Vaio SR, even though the chipset in the SR supports DDR3. DDR2 and DDR3, though they have the same number of pins, have the notch in a different place.Jayayess1190 said: ↑Sony choose to use DDR2 instead of DDR3 so you are stuck with it. I didn't realize, both DDR2 and DDR3 come in 1067MHz varieties, and the difference in performance between the two is negligible. It seems like the DDR2 in the Vaio is 800 MHz though? That wouldn't make much sense given a FSB of 1067 MHz.
-
Jayayess1190 Waiting on Intel Cannonlake
Well I've never seen DDR2-1066 for laptops anywhere, I only know of it for desktops.samx1 said: ↑I didn't realize, both DDR2 and DDR3 come in 1067MHz varieties, and the difference in performance between the two is negligible. Anyone know why the SR CTO configured like the SR590GXB is $150 less?

Probably because of the saving that Sony is offering (on CTOs)Snipester said: ↑Anyone know why the SR CTO configured like the SR590GXB is $150 less?Click to expand...

How long is the $150 off deal lasting? Or is it a permanent price drop?

I think it 150 less because it could have Windows Vista and 7. Also SonyStyle is having Fall Clearance.winkosmosis said: ↑How long is the $150 off deal lasting? Or is it a permanent price drop?Click to expand...
You should check your selected notebook's specs. -
ravil, don't know if you're still checking the thread, but do you think you can type up a list of the drivers/software you took from the SR590 when doing a clean install of Win7 that I can check against? Thanks.ravil said: ↑Regarding the sr590 drivers... Most seem to work all right so far. I am planning on doing a clean install of Windows 7 on my SR430. Are there any drivers I should download and put on my flash drive so I can install it later? Or is everything I need on the DVD companion disk sent by Sony? I know I should back up all my data and files, but not sure if I need to do more in terms of drivers. Thanks in advance.
