Anyone getting the strange issue of tiles appearing "smaller" on Windows 8.1? Normally my screen can only display 3 medium tiles stacked on top of each other. Everynow and then the start screen will change and will show a screen with 6 medium tiles stacked on top of each other.
    smaller tiles.jpg

I'll attach a copy of my normal "larger" tiles whenever it changes back.

Go to control panel, appearance and personalization, display, and check the box "Let me choose one scaling level for all my displays". Then select 125%.

If you set under Charms/Settings/Change PC Settings/PC & Devices/Display/More Options; App Size to Default, you get 4 rows of Medium or Large Tiles by default.

If you change App Size to "Small", you will then get 5 rows of Medium or Large Tiles. And if you go to Charms/Settings/Tiles and turn on the "Show More Tiles", you will get 6 rows like what you are getting right now.

Just in case, I'm writing this that I still experience the bad WiFi connection issue with my Vaio Pro (model SVP132A1CL, but I think it doesn't matter). I have latest drivers installed (16.6.0.8 - those are not yet even on Intel official page), both Bluetooth and NFC off (I don't need them) - and have awful WiFi connection speed if I'm not next to the router. As others reported, the issue is really big when I'm relatively far from the router - e.g. in the hotel room where I'm now. And of course there is no option to come closer or move router, as I'm limited by the room. It's really disgusting - connection is so poor that download speed is about 5-10k and I can't even download my mail with Outlook. Same time, my Nexus 10 has good (not perfect) connection and streams youtube video. Same goes for Galaxy S3 phone and 3-years old Toshiba laptop. Each of those devices has acceptable speed in any place of the room, while I'm trying to dance with the laptop to get any kind of working signal.

Unfortunately, I have to state - if you're not only home and office laptop user and need WiFi connection in hotels, airports, restaurants, etc. - stay away from the Vaio Pro unless the issue is fixed. If you still think about Pro, be prepared to obtain USB wifi adapter - this seems to be the only workaround for now.

I know for Sony it doesn't matter and won't respond - people are reporting this again and again with no official reaction from them. But I surely explain everyone around why I'm juggling with the laptop in the hotel's lobby on in the meeting room. As a consumer, I'm pretty sure I have moved away at least 20-30 business users already from vaio pro series within just couple of weeks. I hope rumor spreads further from everyone and eventually Sony reacts and fix it.

It's not just the tile sizes that change for me. The whole display looks like it scales to 100% rather than the default 125% when returning from sleep mode.

    Hi,
got the same problem with exactly the same model.
Beforeany patch or update have been released (I bought vaio 1,5 moth ago) I noticed that turning off Bluetooth AND NFC helps a lot! Then to improve wifi connection more I totally uninstalled and removed EVERY McAfee's files - that means you need basically go to Programs and unistall McAfee and any linked apps, then go to Services and try to stop every services belonging to McAfee and if it doesn't work run REGEDIT and search phrase> MFE and delete every entry which has anything with McAfee in description. After that use windows searching to find any files left on hard disk. At the end install EVERY update or driver for INTEL from esupport.sony (from oldest to newest).
Don't forget to do any operations since removing mcafee through registry editing up to new antivirus install on turned-off wifi :)
If it will help you please let me now in comment. And if something isn't clear better ask, I don't originally speak in english.

(as I've just checked, on the sony website there's intel wifi driver ver. 16.1.5.2-3, I reckon it will help the most)

This all doesn't help. As I wrote, I have Bluetooth and NFC off, and I either didn't have McAfee or removed it completely, and I have latest available driver for WiFi - 16.6.08.

I can recommend against buying a model svp13215pxb which is the worst computer I have ever worked with or owned. Glad it was a gift from my sister. Piece of crap. Mostly due to Win8.1 issues, but the keyboard flexes when typed, and it is extremely noticeable. Too many problems to list here.

I forgot there was one more method to improve wifi connection but propably you've tried this: go to the power plan, choose one (ex. max performance) and in advanced settings find 'wireless adapter settings' or something similar and change both to max. performance. Then go to Device Manager, find your Intel Wireless in network cards, go to Properties and in Energy Managment tab make sure that the box is unchecked, so you don't allow to turn off this device.

It's not about one more method anymore since Sony started to offer wifi USB dongles for SVP13 owners. They officially admit that there is a problem with this device and they cannot fix it.

All the people posting "no wifi probs for me" are lucky enough to work in good wifi signal conditions. They won't notice anything bad if the signal strength is better than some -60, -65dBm. Anything worse than that and VAIO becomes useless, no connection, or ridicously slow.

Typical complaint goes like this: all my friends or coworkers with other laptops were able to work in some conditions (like meeting or presentation or hotel etc.) but my VAIO failed. Or another complaint: all my old equipment was able to work in my living room (in some distance from AP) and now my VAIO has no connection...

If anyone thinks he can offer a simple solution, why Sony engineers failed to the point of offering "temporary solution" (their words), that is, wifi dongle?

I just got this laptop today and upgraded to windows 8.1. Everything works great except for some reason, I cannot find the option to enable TPM in the bios. I have the latest BIOs installed R1040R7 and tried pretty much everything in the bios. If anyone can post a screenshot or a suggestion, that would be greatly appreciated.

So consensus is wifi issue is very real and not solvable without a wifi dongle?

Disappointing... that's a major achillies heel IMO.

    Hi

I received my Vaio Pro a few days ago.
I wish to do a fresh install as I always like to do with my laptops. There's usually a guide on these forums regarding driver install order etc. But more importantly, this laptop uses UEFI bootloader, which I have no experience with.
Can anyone provide any useful info?

I also want to transfer my Win 8 pro license to the Win 8.1 pro fresh install. There was a tool I used on my VPCZ1 that backs up and restores the key. I can't find it now :(

    Many thanks!

I agree, all those tips are working in few cases actually (including mine) but it's not the solution of this issue. I'd be silly saying that those engineers didn't solved this because of money (wifi dongle extra cost), but I've no idea where the problem is if many of VAIO's laptops got this problem while few have any..

    Hi

    - The product key can key found using : KeyFinder | Magical Jelly Bean
    - When installing a clean Win 8.1, you will need another key for the installation and afterwards change to your own key for activation. But I guess that is not an issue if you have your own copy of Win 8 Pro.
    - In this thread you can find info about driver installation for Win 8.1: vaio update for win 8.1 won't install - Sony's Community Site

Hope it works out for you.

    /Kim

    Hi

Many thanks for the response. It was a great help.

However I'm still not there 100%.

I have one exclamation in device manager:

    dev.jpg

And the setting to adjust the fan speed is missing :(

    vcc.jpg

Any clue? Otherwise, I will re-format and try again.

    Thanks again

What is the Hardware ID for the device that isn't installed? Have you installed the Sony Firmware Extension Parser Device Patch? Have you installed all the motherboard drivers (i..e. Intel® Collaborative Processor Performance Control driver and Intel Smart Connect)?

I have a recent custom Pro 13 and just completed a trans-pacific trip with it. 4 Airports, 3 hotels, several Wifi hotspots and I must say - I did not have any wireless issues. I'm NOT saying that others are experiencing issues - only that my experience so far has been positive with WIFI. My only issue is with the thin bezel where the trackpad is that registers false clicks if I'm not on a flat surface, but that's bearable.

    Hi

I will check and let you know when I get home.

Any idea on the fan speed setting? I'm sure there was a setting before I formatted on that tab in vaio control centre.

Anyone else who did a fresh install of 8.1 can confirm if the option is there or not?

    Thanks again

    Hi

Here is the hardware ID, I hope this is what you asked for:

    unknown.jpg

As Vinod Hedge says, this isn't too much of a concern. I'm more concerned about the missing fan speed control option apparently missing from my VAIO Control Center.

    Can anyone confirm this?

I have not yet started using this machine as primary laptop therefore no data is on here so I'm going to perform a format and re-install 8.1. This time however I will be using the sony.co.uk website for downloads, because not only is this laptop from UK, but that site is neatly catagorized according to driver/application.

I just checked, I did a clean install of 8.1 and I DO have the CPU and Fan, Battery, and Lid Open Action options in the Control Center, you seem to be missing all of those. All I can say is make sure you have the latest versions of everything. Do you have the Hotkey Utilities installed? Maybe try reinstalling the Sony Shared Library and then reinstalling the latest version of the Control Center from the 8.1 drivers section.

    Hi

I have done a re-install of windows and installed all drivers from Sony UK and still facing exactly the same issues.

I have indeed installed the Sony Firmware Extension Parser, as well as hotkey utilities, Sony shared library and installed the latest control centre.

I also noticed that VAIO Update doesn't work. It fails to retrieve updates and then opens a website which yields a http 500 error.

I did not install VAIO Care this time however as the last time it didn't solve anything and I recall somebody successfully did an 8.1 install without installing VAIO Care.
When I get back home I will install everything I can find for the SVP and see what happens.

    Hi

    1. Can you confirm which model you are using?

    2. Also do you have the link to the drivers you have used?

    3. Also, where applicable i have simply installed the latest drivers, eg, i have only installed the latest Bluetooth and Wifi drivers listed under 8.1, and NOT the original driver first. I dont think it should matter, but interested to know how you have performed the procedure.

    Many thanks

I have 2 spare tyco internal laptop antennas I might swap into the case for better wifi reception. Has anyone who opened their pro 13 up have any thoughts on placement? Enough room @ hinges to place behind screen? Or should I stretch across battery and SSD and place under the aluminum pad somehow - wondering about optimal positioning. Haven't seen a teardown for the screen so I am not sure how tight it is.
