Thanks for the reply, I will do have to take it to a professional, as I don't have what it takes to clean my laptop.

Hello. Thought I would pop in as it doesn't seem that the thread has been updated with replies. So I have a f21z1e/bi model. It's seems like a great screen but are the black borders around the screen normal?

So it cannot be removed then? I have compared to other laptops and the border are not as thick.

Don't quite understand what you mean by black borders. The frame around the screen or a border not used by the screen?

I have two USA version laptops, a VPCF2190X with 3D 16" screen and a VPC F2390X with a 3D 16" screen and both screens are fully active = (no borders) with screen resolution @ 1920 x 1080 - landscape orientation.

Well Paul I think it could be the frame, the inside frame or border has a thick black strip all around if that makes any sense. I'm sure I read on here about it being part of the screen.

Ok, there is quite a large black material/plastic frame around the whole screen. About 1 inch from the screen to the edge of the cover. The optional 16" 3D screen will make the border look thicker than the 16.4 TFT active matrix 2D screen that was offered as another option on the F sereis model using the same manufactured cover.

    Hope this helped.

Oh right. However I am not talking about the outer casing. But in fact the dark black border within the screen.

Hi guys, I'm looking at the OCZ Vector as a possible upgrade for my Vaio 3D. Question is if there is space for both the SSD and HDD to be installed.

    I would appreciate any feedback.

jedaite, the only way to get two hard drives in at once is to put one in the optical drive.

Hey guys, I have tried to play some 3D files on my laptop but it does not seem to play these files. I have vaio gate installed, I tried with windvd with no such success. What could the reasoning be behind? Thank you.

I have tried at least three times to upgrade to W8 using the Vaio Upgrade path. Every time I get video corruption with windows splitting and appearing in two places at once. The upgrade includes a new Nvidia graphics driver. I have also tried without installing the graphics driver that Vaio Update wants to instal but still have the problem. I have tried installing with the driver from the Nvidia website but still the same problem. I am about to give up finally with W8 and stay with W7 but has anyone else successfully upgraded to W8 or hasanyone else experienced the same problem and did you solve it?

Hi everyone, does anyone know if there's a way to swap out the blue ray drive for a 2nd HDD drive on these laptops?

also I'm trying to find ways to improve performance on this laptop, I've upgraded the ram to 16gb, i've installed a samsung 240 pro SSD drive as well. One odd issue I have is that transferring files over USB3 I'm averaging around 50mb/s - 65mb/s instead of the usual 90mb/s + that i get with the same external drive connected to my desktop PC. I've tried the latest usb3 controller driver on the sony website.

any other tweaks or tips that I can try on this F3d laptop would be appreciated.

This is strange but when I am viewing a movie with alot of action sequences like explosions etc, the speakers sound distorted and its not at the max 100 level, but instead at.50. Why is this? I have tried changing the settings but nothing helps and I cant find the dolby control panel. Im getting worried it could be my speakers are starting to fail.

I'm optimistic someone could help me regarding my question. Now my battery is dying very quick. I am only getting less than an hour when the laptop is being heavily used for heavy tasks and then when using it for light use such as surfing or going on the web I'm getting less than an hour and a half. Is this normal? What are the average hours people get from the battery from both heavy and light use?

Well, it looks like I'm going to sell my F 3D. It's in great working order. Complete with the 3D glasses. I live in Spain now but bought it from Amazon in June 2011 while I was living in the UK. I upgraded the HDD some time back to a WD Scorpio Black 750Gb. I could send anywhere in Europe. Please PM me if interested.

I was using it as a desktop but have just got a proper desktop from work with a larger monitor which I need for my eyesight. The F3D is a great machine but I never really made use of the 3D.

Has anybody actually tried connecting a 2560x1440 display over HDMI to this machine? It's capable of 3D 1080p over HDMI so it should have an advanced output, or so I would like to believe it. GT540M is sort of capable of that function, what I gather from the specs. I'm considering the NEC PA242W display which has received an HDMI input. I can't however find any information whether VAIO F23 3D can deliver this resolution over HDMI or whether this new NEC can receive it over HDMI. It too has kind of advanced HDMI input capable of 10 bit color depth. But can these two be married to each other?

    Hi all,

I have a Sony Vaio F Series laptop which has being a nightmare! Basically all games have embarrassing performance and after doing a benchmark test with 3DMark 11 I had amazingly bad results.

See: NVIDIA GeForce GT 540M video card benchmark result - Intel Core i7-2670QM Processor,Sony Corporation VAIO

    Graphics Score 316
    Physics Score 3066
    Combined Score 321

I don't understand what is happening. The specs are:

    Intel Core i7-2670QM
    GeForce GT 540M 2GB
    8 GB RAM (2x DDR3)

I did all the basics, no virus or spyware, the fan is always loud in the model but the temperatures seem to be okay (GPU: 72C CPU 76C) and I can't seem to find anything else that looks out of the ordinary. I have the latest drivers too.

What else can be causing this? Has anyone else being having problems?

I don't game too much but I selected the best specs available for this model at the time (except the 3D screen) and doing some research, I was expecting to have a WAY better performance. I can't not play anything! According to Intel's website, this processor should have come with the Intel HD 3000 integrated graphic card but under device manager there is only the GT 540m. It seems that only the dedicated cards is being uses.

    Thanks!

Your problem is not the hd 3000. that works by default even if you are seeing 540m over it because the hd 3000 works with the processor. so problem is with your 540m or something conflicting. but it sounds like the scores are based off your intel 3000. when doing anything the 540m is suppose to take over. but im sure you no that. maybe you could try to force the 540m in the nvidia software to be in performance mode by default and try again.

i dont have the laptop you have for over 2 years so i cant be of anymore help.

    Thanks for the answer.

After a long set of tests and trials that helped nothing, I decided to dismantle the laptop and see if something was causing the fan to not work properly. The fan had a lot of dust so after about 1.5 hour cleaning everything I got all back in one piece and the temperatures are now around 43 C when I turn the laptop on and 55 C when gaming or doing something more demanding. Performance went back to normal too.

This was the last thing I was expecting to be causing this since I always keep the laptop in a case and dust shouldn't be accumulating so much.

    Anyways, problem solved :)

Can you replace the disc drive with a slot load blu-ray drive for the f21z1e?

Laptop tray drives are rickety crap. Mine stopped reading discs.

Anyone recommend an upgrade drive model to fit?
