I'll be sure to check it out after work this morning.

Do any of you all have any idea why my aribitrary WEI has a lower score on graphics/gaming graphics compared to the display unit at Sony Style here? From off the top of my head, the only differences in our units are 2820 (mine) vs. 2720, 8GB (mine) vs. 6GB, and I don't think the Blu-Ray burner really even needs consideration, haha. Both scores on mine are 6.6, and Sony's gets 6.7. I don't know why, but it bugs me! That, and I re-ran the assessment and my processor score changed from 7.7 to 7.6.

    Don't bother about WEI :p
    Its crazy haha!
Its quite common to see similar hardware scoring differently on WEI. Its not reliable at all, so just forget about those scores lol

The only score you should be worried about is the PC MARK Vantage Score. ;)
And other more accurate and scientific benchmarking programs like Cinebench, Wprime,SuperPI etc.

Haha, yeah, that's why I added "arbitrary" in there. It plays with my head every time, though! Good to know about the variances, though.

Are there any sony laptops that have the same piano key black look, without the 3d nonsense? I can't tell from the images on the site.

Is this thing really a "desktop replacement"? Is it too large to carry for an average person? It's beautiful, but I'm concerned about the weight and size.

Elle67, the laptop itself really isn't too big, in my opinion; it's more of the look it gives off that makes it seem bulky. Are there any Vaios you own that we could possibly reference to this one in size? Also, I think they stated the weight is about 7 pounds, so not really heavy, either. Again, though, I come from Sony's monster AW (18.4"), so I'm essentially up for carrying anything, haha.

As far as the look, are you referring to the piano black look of the exterior and inner frames? Currently, I don't think they are making any others that have this look. If I remember correctly, they used to have an AW similar to this, however this was a few years ago.

So I put the original hard drive back in (with the original OEM windows installation) and I am still seeing the same issues. Is anybody else here using Firefox 4? If so, do you see lag issues if Hardware Acceleration is toggled on (which it should be by default, it is on the advanced tab of the options page.)

I also bought Tangled 3D for my daughter today and when I try to play that, once it makes it past the initial Disney screen it stops working properly. Just gives block pixelated stills while the audio is playing normally. Has anybody tried to play actual BluRay 3D disks (rather then have the laptop generate the 3d)?

Notebookjournal says the F2 has the best speakers and the best screen in the business but strangely gives a display score of only 3 out of 5.

I finally bought an actual 3D Blu-Ray but haven't gotten around to watching it yet. I don't know if this will help, but when it's in "full-screen" mode, try hitting Ctrl-E. This is what was messing up my conversion in the past (the "play content" error mentioned on this board a couple times), I finally found out by reading the update notes and just trying out that combo. I don't know if it'll do anything for an actual 3D disc, but for two key presses it can't hurt to try. :)

    From Sony:
"This utility updates the Corel WinDVD BD software to version 10.0.5.761 to resolve the following issues:

Switching from 2D to 3D media may cause Corel WinDVD BD not to function properly
Corel WinDVD BD is unable to toggle between minimized and full screen 3D modes using the "CRTL + E" function keys "

Up until then, I never knew of the Ctrl-E command nor did I know the purpose. It cleared up my previous issue, though.

Download this trial version of Power DVD 10 Ultra and check if you can play the movie fine with it. I think the issue is with the WinDvd player, so just give it a shot and plus powerdvd is much better than WinDvd for 3D bluray playback and better 2D to 3D up conversion.

The best Blu-ray player & DVD player software ? PowerDVD 10

And what do you think of the F2 screen ? How are the black levels on the screen ? Are blacks jet black or greyish ?
And last question, how much would you rate the screen out of 10 ? :D

Like avmax, I was able to play Tangled 3d just fine in another player. I'm using Arcsoft TotalMedia Theater 5. I have used TMT3 Platinum for some time now and like it pretty well. TMT5 fixes the Windows 7 compatibility and adds 3d support (TMT3 had an upgrade to support 3d, something like $20-30, so I just went to TMT5)

Has anybody been able to remove the back cover? I can't figure out a couple places that are just not wanting to separate: the front by the memory (I've removed the screw under the square rubber bit) and the side with the radiator (I'm thinking you will have to slide the cover to clear some of the ports...maybe there are hooks?)

Also, has anybody looked at updating the BIOS? I have Aptio version 2.01.1204 from the factory and it has hardly any options.

The only time I have really looked at the blacks is when I'm starting up the computer. If you compare the black then to the bezel, the screen isn't as black.

Rating the screen, though, I'd give it a 10. The colors are extremely bright and even. My AW had a little darkening in the corners, and while it doesn't bother me at all, technically the F2 is better. Oh, but you gotta have a lower refresh rate for a brighter display (still don't understand why).

Did the type of monitor that Dazed posted give you enough information to figure out what type of panel this unit has?

From that info all I could make out is that the panel is made by AU Optronics.
No other info on that panel :(

Is yours the same panel ? Just curious , as last time in the F series SONY used two to three different panels depending on the region.

    I know :)
But I am curious to know more cuz of two reasons -

    1) Sony has never used an IPS panel in any of their TVs or monitors or notebooks AFAIK. So if the F2 does have an IPS panel it will be a first for Sony.

    2) Why does Sony not market the fact that the F2 has an IPS or PVA panel ? They will attract buyers if they did, so I don't understand why there is no mention of it by Sony.

I tried finding out more about it and apparently its likely to be an S-MVA panel by AU Optronics. AU Optronics does not manufacture any IPS panel according to what I could find.

You can use the trial version :)
With that you can only run it once, which isn't bad. Just make sure you disable all unwanted services in the background.

Hey guys, i recently purchased that new Sony Vaio F 3D laptop. It's a beautiful machine, and i personally installed 8GB or RAM and changed the original HDD to a 120GB Intel 510 Series SSD.
The Intel 510 is a SATA3, and is suppose to have a read speed of up to 450MB/s. However, i am only getting around 280-300MB/s.... From this, i am now wondering if there're something i gotta do with the SSD or maybe the Laptop itself just doesn't have a SATA3 Port which allow data transfer of up to 6Gbs.

P.S. This laptop has 2 USB 3.0 ports, so i would just assume it should carry SATA3? I donno, i think my assumption might be wrong based on my read test ....

    Thoughts?

Thx in advance for everyone's help.

    1. I am running window 7 Home 64bit
    2. Processor is the Intel i7 2620QM

Here is the answer I posted in your other thread. Just reposting it here so that the misinformation I mention below is not spread when people are doing searches. I'll let the folks who actually have an F2 help you with your issue:

"It has Sata 3. But I just wanted to correct an erroneous notion you have - having USB 3.0 in your laptop does not mean having Sata 3. My F13 has 2 USB 3.0 and Sata 2. My chipset does not support SATA 3."

Thx jpride! But I want to ask is since my laptop is running sata 3, why is my SSD is running between 280-300MB/s when it should be close to 450MB/s?
Also, how do u know the F2 series is Sata 3?
    Thx again!

I think someone with better SSD knowledge would be more helpful than me since I've never had SSD in my computers (I can only dream).

In this thread it was stated that Sony tech support confirmed SATA 3: http://forum.notebookreview.com/son...f-3d-series-owners-lounge-22.html#post7326807
Although I don't always put stock in what Sony tech support says, it would be bizarre for a Sandy Bridge based computer not to have SATA 3, so along with the tech support confirmation, I think it's pretty safe.

I received my F 3D a little bit over a week, and I started to notice there are scratches on glossy bezel below Fn, Window, ALT keys. I never wear watches or bracelet, but it still get scratched with my palm or wrist over that area while typing or they're probably already there when I received it. I think I'm going to return it.

Its normal. 450 MB/s is the "claimed" rate by Intel, you won't get the same transfer rate in real world conditions. And IF you really are getting 280-300MB/s then its much higher than most SSDs which do around 200 MB/s.

And since you have an SSD installed, can you please run PC Mark Vantage on your PC and tell us what score you get ? I hope you do :D

I'm with you on this one; I think this is my main design gripe with this thing. Have you considered a keyboard skin? Sony has one that fits this series perfectly and comes in white or black. I posted a link one or two pages back, last post on the page if I remember correctly.

    Hey eehpeehthreeh,

I read earlier that you were installing patches from Wow. How is the fps on games without 3D? Have you tried any other games on F2?

So far I haven't played too much on there, mainly WoW and just recently got Final Fantasy XIV (slowly I'll get to putting old programs and games on there). For WoW on the auto-detect, "recommended" settings, it puts the game on "Good" at 1080 and I don't really ever get anything under 40fps at that resolution; I've gone from 40 up to 60, once in a while 120 (not often, haha). I haven't tried a lower one because I'm so used to 1080. :p FFXIV, however, I have to run at 720 to get around 30fps; 1080 just makes the game a little too choppy for my tastes.

As for 3D, the general numbers I've seen in reviews - and from my experience - is roughly half the fps of what the game would run in 2D.

How is WoW in 3D? I've always wanted to try it.

I love this laptop, but it's pretty pricey at the moment. Best deal I've seen is $1650 for the retail version.

It plays in 3D pretty well if you don't mind the fps drop. The game is Nvidia 3D classified as "excellent" quality, so I'm assuming that means the 3D quality is better than the lower-class games. I don't know if it's on every 3D-capable game, but you can also adjust the intensity within WoW itself; I made mine a bit extreme, haha.

But yeah, this thing is expensive. I was originally going to get a Z13 to have a small laptop along with my AW. Then, I started reading that they were preparing a 3D laptop, so I just waited and "saved up."

@Spirus, eehpeehthreeh a few pages back posted screenshots of him unpacking the F2. Looking at them, it seems as if they just went for USB ports to add on components.
Have ordered my F2, and am impatiently awaiting it to arrive! Estimated ship date is the 26th of April, which is too far away.

Hi guys, I have one question for the members that configured their F2 to have a blu-ray burner. I ordered the pre-configured laptop, from Amazon, and would really like to have a blu-ray burner. so if you have a BD-Burner... What's the BD Burner optical driver name and model?

Screen is very nice, best I've had on a laptop. Speakers are so-so. Not bad, but nothing special.

I've added a couple more pictures to the F2 album; these ones show the keyboard skin for anyone who was curious.

Hardware acceleration. I think there are still issues in the nVidia drivers where it is not properly switching from the nVidia graphics processor and the lower power one onboard the intel chip. My options were to uncheck it and leave it that way (what I finally opted for) or to uncheck it and recheck it everytime I started firefox. I have tried several of the nVidia drivers (using inf files from laptopdriverstogo) but no luck and they have all caused additional problems on top of what was already there (hardware acceleration issues in other programs.) So currently running the Sony drivers.

If I find another one that works better I will post up here. Hope nVidia gets it sorted out, because there are some nice features in the newer drivers. Not overly confident they will though.
