Guys,
I would highly recommend all to try out the new PowerDVD version 11 ( The Blu-ray Player for All Media on PC, Device, Home & Social Cloud. It brings life to this laptop. really.
I was always wary of this fake 2d to 3d conversion, but I don't know how they did it, PowerDVD 11 ultra really nailed it. No comparison to WinDVD. Fantastic! I really wonder what kind of algorithm they use to build the depth information from videos and photos, but it really brings out life and cannot see a different between the real 3D ones and these... particularly with photos (PowerDVD 11 adds capability to view 2d pictures in 3d, while also improving 3d view conversion from powerdvd 10). I intend to buy it when trail expires.
I wish Sony packed PowerDVD 11 instead of WinDVD.
Note: I am not in anyway associated with any of these companies. -
Has anybody been able to successfully remove the VAIO and 3D icons from the VAIO Gate? I actually like the VAIO Gate as my taskbar can sometimes get very full from a number of applications and processes going on.
When I have some time in the future, I am definitely going to try and reflash the BIOS on my machine to try an unlock some of the features that Intel normally leaves open to the end-user to change (memory multiplier in particular).
-
What are the prices on the two media players you two mention? Do either of them have the hit-or-miss situations that seem to have happened to a few of us with WinDVD?

Here is a review: CyberLink Launched PowerDVD 11, a New Universal Media Player - 3D Vision Blog -
Edit: Oh the prices are fairly similar, too. TMT5 is listed at $99 on Arcsoft's site and Google Shopper is showing it for $95 at Tigerdirect.com. I got an upgrade from TMT3 Platinum for $40 with a discount Arcsoft was running at the time. -
Thanks, you guys. I'll have to look into those sometime soon.

Hi Guys,
This thread seems to be the right place to be and I'm glad to join in.
The laptop model I have on order from Sony is the VAIO F 3D (U.S. Model No: VPCF2190X), which has been confirmed with an estimated shipping date of 04/28/2011.
Custom build includes:
- 8GB (4GBx2) DDR3-SDRAM-1333
- Windows® 7 Professional 64-bit
- Intel® Core™ i7-2820QM quad-core processor (2.30GHz) with Turbo Boost up to 3.40GHz
- *NVIDIA® GeForce® GT 540M (1GB VRAM) dedicated graphics (*Standard in all VPCF2190X models)
- Large capacity battery
- 640GB Hard Drive (7200rpm)
- Blu-ray Disc™ Player / Burner
After on-line research, my main purpose for getting this laptop is for the unique top-quality 16" 2D/3D Full HD VAIO Premium Display (1920x1080), a rare find for portable multimedia 3D playability of Blu-ray 3D discs and 2D Blu-ray movies!
A Concern I have at this time is for the Corel® WinDVD® BD software bundled with the unit and issues multiple people are reporting and experiencing on different forums.
Examples found have included Blu-ray 3D playability problems with:
- Toy Story-3D - Pixelated in 3D- Audio - OK
- Tron-Legacy 3D- Pixelated in 3D- Audio - OK
- Tangled -3D- Pixelated in 3D- Audio - "sound very jumpy"
- Megamind -3D Pixelated in 3D - Audio -OK
The software company is not fast in efforts to fix the glitches. Reported problems still exist from the last firmware update: Corel® WinDVD® BD Software Update: 03/28/2011 Version# 10.0.5.761 The source taken from: https://forum.sel.sony.com/viewtopic.php?f=61&t=8639
Hope to find many solutions here.

Well, just got mine delivered today! Am installing and fiddling with everything at the moment.
-
I haven't try Firefox yet or installed Firefox, but I use Google Chrome more, and have no problem what so ever. Its fast, and no drag at all. I love the sync/cloud mode. I think FF has it too.
I have only used this lappy so far.. for 2 weeks. Great Laptop for multimedia and semi work with programing and photo editing. The laptop is not as bulky as people think. Pretty slick design for a 16inch lappy made of highend plastic.
The laptop run pretty cool and quiet. It sits on my lap half the time when I'm in bed doing some work. But the battery life drains fast. I have the basic battery, 3 hour of usages only.
All models spec do come with the 3D glasses.
Here's my work desk w/ the F 3D
-
One thing I hate about this laptop is the built in camera. It's only 2mp and the quality is not there. Everything is dark. Wish they were more up to Apple camera specs.
Might have to get an external cam... -
I had to adjust my webcam because it was too dark, but after I changed the brightness setting on it, it's not too bad.
-
Okay, so it sounds like mine wasn't the only one acting up in low light. I took it in to my work one night and the picture turned out a lot better as we have bright lighting all over the place.
Derz, out of curiosity, what did you change your settings to? -
I bought a 4 year full warranty at Frys for 399. So when the new replacement F3D version 2 come out with a 5mp camera.. ima break the screeen or smash this up a bit to get an replacement. MUAHAHAHAHHAAH -
hahaha

I just bought this notebook.
Incredibly happy with it, amazing screen, fast, the cosmetics of the case is incredible.
however pulled it out the box, covered in finger prints and booted it up to find out its already registered as 'David'. gotta ring up the sony store i bought it from tomorrow because for a $4000AUD notebook thats just not on, they essentially gave me a 'demo' model that someones ed around with in the store. not happy in that respect.
completly wrapped otherwise.
Has anyone had any reports of problems yet?? would be good to know now to watch out for. -
@eehpeehthreeh
I changed the brightness setting to 16, and have noticed a difference with it turned up. -
on firefox, go to Options/General Tab/
and uncheck the box for USE HARDWARE ACCELERTION WHEN AVAILABLE.
-
BTW guys, I'm selling my glasses for 80 bucks. I need a set of universals (got 2 samsung 3d tv's and want my glasses to serve a purpose other than this laptop)
-
this laptop is great, however is a freaking finger print magnet and a biotch to keep clean...I've been working on a custom skin design to cover it. I'm thinking using Skinit.com but they only offer a size that will not cover the borders. here are some samples of my desing so far. Please let me know if there is another skin site that uses 3M paper. I had it on my last laptop and nothing seemed to damage that skin.
This is the one that I'm going with.
Yes, I'm a Colossus, tron and the matrix fan. -
Both of those looks great. I'd never put anything on mine, though.
I agree with you. Really the only thing I "dislike" about this laptop is that it gets so dirty! Still, I can't see this laptop in any other finish (though a glossy white would have probably looked sweet); it's just a compromise for the sleek design. -
can someone confirme that this laptop is a 240hz screen??, cause I've read in many review that the screen is a 120hz but some spec sead that the screen is 240hz ???
-
Bomdy, is there any way to get those images in 1920x1080? I absoutley love them, and would love to have them as my wallpaper for my Vaio F 3D when it arrives. Thanks.
-
Are they going to release an update for the F series without 3D option? (with SB cpu,HD webcam, backlit keyboard, new GPU...etc
-
-
in display propriety on windows it's 240hz or 120hz (in 2D mode)? thanks
-
The highest refresh available there is 120Hz on mine.
-
I am having trouble with FireFox. It just seems really slow, especially when you type. I know there are other browsers, but this is my favorite.
By the way, I just got the Sony 3D Bloggie camera. Playing videos back on the Vaio F 3D is like....wow! Here is my review of it:
Exclusive Review: Sony 3D Bloggie HD Camera - Los Angeles Gadgets | Examiner.com -
Philly, I was having that problem w/ Firefox being slow while typing, and turned off the hardware acceleration box in the advanced settings of options. Since then, it's been just as it was on the other computers I've used.
Samo, the highest refresh on my screen is 120Hz for 2D mode.
Badrix, when I ordered my laptop, I asked at the Sony store near me, and they didn't know, but thought there might be one last refresh of the F in a couple of months with the Sandy Bridge processor. -
Philly, how is the 3D working out on the machine? I was watching an interview about the Bloggie 3D on Sony's SGNL site and they mentioned that the 3D used in recording the video was a different format than the stereoscopic 3D, which was one reason I opted not to buy one. Does it still use the glasses during playback on your F?
EDIT: I found the video with the interview, the part about 3D playback is between 1:20 and 2:00.

Look at this post about the 3D bloggie http://3dvision-blog.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=21&t=1149 -
Ah, very good to know. I may have to consider trying it out again; thanks for the link!

I'm pretty sure I know what is going on and the answer will answer the questions on the reason why the brightness goes down when you up the refresh rate to 120 Hz, too.
The refresh rate of the screen is 240 Hz, but the refresh coming out of the video card is 120 Hz. If you bother with the 3D introduction on the laptop, you see that there is a black screen inserted between each frame at 120Hz, effectively make it "240 Hz." They do this to improve the 3D effect of the picture reducing cross-talk between the eyes.
The reason why this reduces brightness would be this:
At 75 Hz or those setting below 119 Hz, the refresh rate coming out of the video, is the refresh rate displayed on the screen. Once you bump it up to 119 or 120 Hz, it starts to insert those black frames in there, effectively reducing the amount of light the eyes receive, which the brain interprets as being dimmer. So putting this another way, even though the frames being displayed are the same brightness, the black frames will reduce the perception of brightness.
I hope this explains things. -
Okay, yeah, I watched the intro videos and saw the black inserts before. This was another theory of mine regarding the 240Hz (120 actual picture +120 black), but I omitted it to keep my "explanation" a little simple.
I didn't consider that the reason why the screen darkens, though; that's a good reasoning. -
I don't know why I didn't ask this sooner, but is anyone having issues with their headphone jacks? I've tried two pairs of headphones so far, and both have a lot of low buzzing coming through them when little or no sound is playing. Any potential fixes to this?
-
None of you has disassemble this laptop? I just wana know if it was easy to change the keyboard and also if the keyboard and the glossy plastic on top are one part or separated. thanks all
-
Hey....thinking about getting ordering this computer this week.
Overall what does everyone think?
Buy or don't buy?
How's the 3d in 240 hertz....much different than the 120?
How's the 2D to 3D conversion?
How is gaming on this thing? -
and does anyone know how these stack up to the XPS 17 3-d?
-
The bloggie videos work perfectly on the Vaio F. The lady in the video is an idiot--she has probably prevented a lot of people from buying the 3D bloggie, which is a good buy for the price.
I had to play with the settings on the Vision Player at first: Side to Side, 16:9, and check the box for Deinterlacing.
The only issue I have with the camera is that the lenses are too close to each other and the 3D shots don't give you the depth of lets say the Fujitsu W3. I would still recommend it though. -
Hey...I saw you posted on this message board a few times and thought you might be able to answer some question for mebecause i'm thinking about ordering this computer this week, but not sure if I should.
Overall what do you think?
Buy or don't buy?
It seemed like you and someother people were running into a lot of bugs...did you work everything out of is there still a lot of ongoing problems?
How's the 3d in 240 hertz....much different than the 120?
How's the 2D to 3D conversion?
How is gaming on this thing? -
Have you owned a Sony before? It's a "premium" brand and you will be facing higher prices. I've never had any issues with my four Vaios in the past four years, so I don't mind the "upcharge."
As far as bugs, I don't consider there too be too many. The unit's still new so we're all just feeling around and collaborating.
This display is "fake 240," from what we've for the most part concluded. I think there's a better explanation on the previous page.
2D to 3D works pretty well on the stock player, WinDVD. Though a couple of members on here have voiced better conversion on other players they bought or tried out.
Gaming works out pretty well, as long as you remember laptops' limits. I generally play online games (WoW, FFXIV, Rift, etc.) and those run pretty well, save for FFXIV (a little under 30fps at 720 resolution).
I hope those points help you out a bit. For me, I'm also concerned with aesthetics when I buy a laptop. Excluding my NR back in the day (just needed a cheap laptop), I like the unique-styled models (owned FW and AW prior to F2), and I still think this new unit is one of the sleeker laptops from Sony this year. Let us know what you end up doing. -
thanks for replying...helps out a lot. For the most part my biggest concern is having too many bugs....i'm not techy at all so really want something that's going to be user friendly right out of the box. Is there much difficulty getting help from sony if you run into issues?
-
Not really, they're fairly prompt with responses.
I think the only "negatives" in regards to my unit right now are:
-My headphone jack has a lot of buzzing when I put headphones in. I haven't emailed Sony about it just yet; I've been trying to dig around and see if I can find anything.
-This thing gets DIRTY! I have a microfiber cloth nearby for any time I want to wipe off some dust or fingerprints. You'll also have to be very careful if you want to keep this thing looking good. The two demo units I've seen at stores are scratched up very badly. I almost maxed out the whole package in my CTO, save for SSD and Win 7 Pro, and it cost me $2.6k. I definitely do not want any scratches on here, haha.
Oh, and about setting it up without too much tech knowledge, it's not a whole lot. The only thing I remember having to actually participate in setting up was calibrating the 3D through Nvidia, but even that was really simple. -
ijust...
I've played several games on this laptop in the last week to test it's capabilities as far as 3D conversion goes while gaming. Overall, it's been great, but I can't usually tell the difference between 30-35 fps and 60+ fps, so your experience may be different. Only major complaint is FPS titles, where the HUD renders at the completely wrong depth, but that's a known issue w/ those titles. There's been a couple of times when playing audio, especially in games, where it starts to "pop." Carried over to when I put headphones in, so is different then eehpeeh's sound, I think.
I will echo that this unit picks up fingerprints/smudges/dust like no other. It seems sometimes that wiping it down for fingerprints makes it a magnet for dust. It is a heavier unit, so what is your primary use of this going to be? With the Extended Battery, (which should have extended further across the bottom of the unit) I get around two hours of use out of it with the battery saver setting at 80% and everything I normally have running, but have gotten above three hours when I had to take it in to class to write up some papers, with most of the background programs turned off and wifi disabled.
Anyone updated the Nvidia display drivers to their newest release? I am curious to know if there's anything notable about updating to it, besides the little program to check for driver updates that they included. -
-
FYI:
This unit is supposed to be a multimedia laptop, but when using Wireless LAN on the VPCF2190X Laptop, it doesn't recognize the faster multimedia 5.200 GHz channel available on my D_Link Systems Wireless Router in Mixed 802.11n and 802.11a Modes. It only recognizes the 2.412 GHz channel for Mixed 802.11g and 802.11b modes on the same router.
