Another potentially useful thing i have found
Note WiDi vs WiFi
When i received my duo it was reset to stock and i had no wifi problems. then i was messing around with all the preinstalled features and i came across the Intel WiDi
It said it needed to update the driver which i had been doing all day with no problems so i figured it wouldnt hurt.
then my computer restarted and the wifi speed had dropped by factor of ten. The strength was the same, 5 bars at 30 feet away (quite a new router BTW), but the connection was horrendous. (Maybe it should have been a clue to me that it was trouble when it told me there was a compatibility issue when i clicked on the WiDi icon...)
so I had to turn it off, hold the assist button, and restore the backup i had luckily made before i did this. I couldnt find any other way to fix it, as uninstalling the drivers in Programs and Features didnt do anything and Intel WiDi isn't listed in there.
interwebs appear to be restored back to snappy awesomeness!
And i have no idea why i would want the widi thing to work anyway, no one has widi capable tv's... so gimmicky...
so if you have messed with the WiDi at all and you're suffering from WiFi issues, this may be your problem.

actually i may have spoken too soon. My speed went from a trickle of 50kB dn / 25kB up before to 987kB dn but only increased the upload to 40kB
weird. i'm hoping its my ISP that is messed up.
IN OTHER NEWS!!!
Anybody using a Windows 8 touchscreen should go to the app store and download TouchMe. It lets you use all sorts of gestures to do all sorts of things. Its something that should be included in Windows 8 by default but microsoft is retarded !!! so it took a third party to complete their OS for them.
The TouchMe app really makes everything fluid. I had trouble getting it to work for my Vaio duo 13 but i contacted the programmer and he has fixed it and i have a working version now and the new one should be up on the website quickly. If you want to try it out before then go to YasharBahman.com - A Place You Can Call for the engine (this link isn't permanent) and you have to download the Metro app from the appstore. check out this guy's youtube videos to see what it can do! Yashar Bahman - YouTubeClerish, WEB_SRFR and HigginsHere like this. -
Thanks or sharing. Microsoft's touch implementation in Windows is moronic as they apparently assumed no one does anything in desktop mode when that's where I spend 95% of the time. I wish there was a touch gesture for switching between Windows desktop applications.
Does the application have a Web site? I am a bit weary about downloading an executable from a link with no other official information about the software.

Anyone know any good deals on the Duo 13. I'm in Ireland but anywhere is the EU is good for me as I won't be hit with customs & extra VAT. Cheers.

I have a question. Do the i5 and the i7 have the same battery life?
-
Hi, guys
I basically read through this whole thread looking for more info on the Vaio Duo 13. I just ordered one earlier today, custom built, with the i7-4650u, Intel HD 5000 Graphics, 8 gb of RAM, and a 256 gb SSD. After experiencing a LOT of buyers' remorse (I blew over $2000 on this...), I decided to actually do my homework and perhaps cancel my order.
I am wondering, first of all, if the i7-4650u (and HD5000) is worth the $200 extra I paid for, versus the i7-4500u.and HD4400. I am not a particularly heavy user, but would like to do some 3d gaming in the future (stuff like LoL, maybe FPSes like BF4), and am also an engineering student, so modeling softwares might be in my future. Most likely going into CSE (Computer Science Engineering), which is largely programming (and therefore, keyboard), based...which makes me question whether the Vaio Duo is really the right choice for me, given its keyboard. Any opinions? I'm not an especially fast typer by any means (I type faster on my Note 3 with Swype than on a laptop), so I don't know if I'm creating problems that don't exist. It might be worth noting that I'm accustomed to only using the right side shift key, which I've seen is tiny and perhaps prone to error on the Duo. I have the same mental issue with the hardware...am I going overkill with the 4650? I'd like it to be future-proof, but if the difference is negligible (or even negative, as I'm seen on some comparisons) between the 4650 + 5000 and the 4500 + 4400, I can't have that $200 weighing down on my conscience. I also don't know if the $200 upgrade for 256 gb of SSD over 128 is necessary. I plan to keep all my media on an external/in the cloud anyways, but even so, will I be competing for space with program files, etc, with the 128 gb, especially since I've heard so much of it is already taken up? Finally, does the non-adjustable angle make a huge inconvenience? For example...would it be awful if I was using it on a desk that was high, with a lower chair that I couldn't raise, where my hands would essentially be at shoulder level with me reclined back?
I am in love with the idea of a digitizer pen for taking notes in class and the such, so the other option I'm considering is the cheaper Vaio Flip (I'd probably get the 13" or 14"). More "normal" keyboard and adjustable viewing angles, and I could get the same specs on it (albeit with a i7-4500 and HD5000 instead of i7-4650 and HD4400, but, like I said, I don't know if the 4650 is even worth it) for a much lower price. How do you guys think it compares? It has a nice metal frame too, although its battery life is much worse, and I've heard it's noisy (although I think that only applies to the 13" model). And has anybody heard anything about the wifi issue affecting the Flip? That could potentially be a deal-breaker, since I'm on a college campus and am totally reliant on access points that will most likely not be very close, and won't be changeable to suit my needs.
I love the form factor of the Duo (it's freakin' beautiful and I would just love to be able to blow all the college hipsters' Macbooks out of the water), but just feel guilty spending so much on it if I don't need everything I paid for, or if a cheaper option would better suit me. I've heard great things about it and would love to believe it, but just don't want to make a stupid choice. It seems like I'd have to get used to using a laptop in a whole different way (duh, it's a hybrid), which I'm totally open to.
Thanks in advance, and a prompt reply would be greatly appreciated! -
I use 3D modeling software on my Duo 13 ( SDS/2 by Design Data), and have basically the same specs, albeit with the 500GB ssd. Definitely stick with 256 minimum. I'm perfectly happy with the keyboard. I'm a moderate typist and don't have any issues. Although I don't spend a lot of time actually typing. My wifi works as good as anything else I have. If you want a computer that can do pretty much anything (except maybe serious gaming), and you can take with you anywhere, the Duo 13 is the best I've seen. I have a co-worker who may be getting a Flip tonight, if he does I'll try to post my impressions. -
With the i7-4500 and HD5000 I can play Skyrim at medium settings with a good frame rate. I can play Civ5 at max settings (native touchscreen FTW!) with ease.
Everything just cruises along beautifully. Have not tried WarFrame or any of the newer games - would not attempt FarCry (hah), but it might work.
Love, love, love this device. And the Mac fanboys turn green when I shift it from a tablet - "That's just a cheap iPad knockoff" - to a laptop and open Skyrim. Then their jaws hit the floor. Core 7 for 10 hours with a decent video card?!
I still use my Origin Eon 17s for the high power stuff. Of course it weighs about 15lbs + a power brick that looks like it came out of the 80s. -

My impressions of the Flip 15A: screen looks good; and it's got a 2gb Nvidia graphics card, so should be better than the Duo 13 for gaming. The flip function is very awkward compared to the Duo 13, and it's much bigger and heavier than the Duo 13. Keyboards are pretty similar between the two. Fingerprints show up a lot more on the Flip body. The SSD on the Duo makes a big performance difference. And the Duo is quieter. The Flip has a bunch more storage. Of course which computer someone chooses depends on how you're using it . . . If you're carrying it around a lot and/or switching between laptop/tablet a lot, definitely the Duo 13 is the way to go. If you're looking for a flexible desktop replacement that you can take with you, the Flip looks good. -
Definitly go for the 256gb SSD! You wont get the full 128gb, if I check my explorer it says xx/210gb available.
Also go for 8gb ram, but that should be clear
Can't say much about the CPU cause my German model only had the i7 4500 as an option, which I've chosen. If I could, I would take the best one...
Keyboard is totally fine. I'm using the right shift key for typing as well, and couldn't notice any problems. Only my left ctrl key is ed up, but that shouldn't be at yours. -
I just got a Duo13 with i5/128gb disk/8gb Ram.
My main dislikes about the computer are:
1. Non adjustable display angle - this is a bothering issue when I am using computer in bed or on the sofa, coupled with (2.)
2. Poor viewing angle - I can see obvious grey gradient on top of screen when the background is white, unless I sit straight and view the display head-on. This is also an issue when viewing off angle in tablet mode.
3. Display bleeding on bottom of the screen, especially when in tablet mode taking notes - I have seen this proble on every Duo13 i have encountered.
4. Less plastic and more metal construction would be better for a $1500+ computer.
5. Backlight keyboard is non adjustable in terms of brightness; only option is just On or Off.
My main likes are:
1. Excellent pen for writing - except for buttons which are non user programmable and clicking it opens Vaio Paper; it is annoying and renders the buttons useless.
2. Silent fan and low heat
3. Vibrant display except for viewing angle and screen uniformity issues.
4. Keyboard actually feels great despite smaller keys
5. Good battery life
So my queston is:
Given the above and that the Duo13 has been already out for 1/2 a year, will a product refresh be out very shortly in 2014?
Can you give me an idea of the product refresh cycle? (I think the Duo11 was upgraded after 1 year)
Should I keep the computer?
Please help ! -
Hi,
Since I updated to 8.1, it seems to have two problems now:
1) Battery seems to drain faster during connected standby, more than 20% per day
2) When out of battery, I plugged in, and turn on the laptop, it starts making loud noises from the speaker, I had to reboot, and after rebooted, the speakers went dead, no sound at all even if I max it out to play music. I then had to shut down and turn on, then it's back to normal.
I tried reinstalling audio driver but still suffer from the same problem. :-(
Prior to 8.1, it was working perfectly normal :-( -
Hi everyone,
For those who have the 4G-capable version of the Duo 13 with built-in SIM card slot: does the connected standby work over 4G, or just over wifi? It would be great to be able to put the computer to sleep and then wake it up without having to re-connect each time.
Also, I am in Australia - has anyone had an issues with Telstra 4G? How is speed?
Cheers! -
As for the keyboard, it is a better keyboard the less efficient the typist you are. I am a 100 WPM touch typist who knows what a good keyboard feels like and the Duo 13's keyboard is lack luster to say the least. However it is perfectly capable, especially if you are an average typist. From what you've said, I don't think the keyboard should be a concern at all.
Definitely go for the 256 GIG SSD. I think you would regret it if you didn't. The 256 is more than enough for myself, with 126 free at the moment. But it's nice to not have to really worry what's eating up your memory. Sure you do need to do some memory management with only ~215 Gigabytes, but much less than if you had ~80 Gigabytes. (These are all rough estimates of the actual amount of space you'd have.)
The non-adjustable angel has been a non-issue for myself. I've almost never been in want of an adjustable screen because the viewing angles are pretty good, and it's at an angle that seems to be just right in almost every situation. If you somehow find yourself in that hypothetical situation, I'm not sure how you'd be any more comfortable with an adjustable screen... You might be able to see better, but that situation sounds so unbelievably uncomfortable, I'm not sure why you wouldn't go somewhere else--point is, the times where an adjustable screen would be of tremendous use are limited. The only times you really might want an adjustable screen are when you're using it in bed or on a couch, but even then it works fairly well. A big plus for the fixed angle is that when the ultrabook is on a flat surface, you can write on the screen with your hand against it without the screen tipping over or moving. The same goes for using it with touch. It's pretty sweet, and to be honest, I find the fixed angle to be the opposite of an inconvenience. It's so easy to open it up and close, I've not gotten tired of it yet. Who would have thought you could have so much fun 'opening' your laptop? The seamless transition from tablet to better-than-decent laptop is amazing.
The Flip isn't a bad machine, but there's a reason it's cheaper, which you pointed out: battery life. The battery is amazing on the Duo 13 and I find myself always so very glad that's it's lasting so long, even when I use the battery care function to restrict it to 80% charge. I also prefer the form factor of the Duo 13 much more to the Flip, which is all the more reason to pay a little (or a lot) extra. As for the wifi? I've heard the same issues exist on the Flip, but personally I have never had WiFi issues, and I use my Duo 13 across a wide variety of routers. I'm also constantly using college campus routers which aren't very close, and the WiFi works great.I might be the minority here, however. Even if I did have WiFi issues, I enjoy the Duo 13 so much that I would consider using a small wireless adapter.
The only complaints I have with the duo are as such: The keyboard is very lack luster, and I wish it were better. But it's a fine keyboard for the average typist, and even for me it's pretty decent considering the size of the Duo 13. It's a compromise, really. I also don't like how the stylus is stored. I'm glad we can store it at all, but the plastic holder is not too reliable. The track pad could be a bit bigger, but it's also very serviceable. Other than that, it's a great machine.Clerish likes this. -
Hey guys, new duo owner here (got mine less than a week ago in the mail) and so far I'm head over heels in love with it! I got a built to order machine (US) maxed out except for a 256 SSD instead of 512 (so LTE, HD5000, ect).
The machine shipped with 8.1 and so far I haven't had any of the issues experienced on here. WIFI has been great, pulling ~40mbps in my living room with the router upstairs. Only the slightest backlight bleed (better than any of my other computers actually), great screen uniformity, dead silent in sleep, and only draining about 0.5 percent of battery per hour.
My only "issue" I've had with the machine so far is regarding Skype (modern app). If I launch Skype I can make and recieve calls just fine. I can also receive calls if I am in other apps and have previously launched Skype. When I enter standby however, I can no longer receive Skype calls, even after waking back up, until I relaunch the app.
I have double checked that I enabled Skype to run in the background and on the lockscreen. BTW the alarm app works fine during sleep (wakes up the computer and rings) so I don't think it's a connected standby issue. Has anyone else experienced anything similar or have any ideas?
As a side note, I received my my machine with 8.1 pro (clean start) and it shipped with bitlocker enabled by default. I disabled it, however the thought crossed my mind that perhaps this machine supports eDrive (in which case bitlocker causes virtually no performance hit). Does anyone have any idea if this is the case (see here for info on eDrive: AnandTech | Hardware Accelerated BitLocker Encryption: Microsoft Windows 8 eDrive Investigated with Crucial M500).
And... one last question, anyone have any experience with Sony anti theft? Does the duo have a GPS and support this feature? If so, how is it activated? -
Hey folks, anyone else experienced this?
I upgraded my Vaio Duo 13 to Windows 8.1 and now the face recognition (Fast Access) is locked on the wrong camera and has no settings to change it back.
when I log into windows using the password, I can't get to the fast access app to change settings because it says it doesn't allow "guest access" it now takes me 4 clicks 2 swipes and a password to get in everytime. absolutely useless.
anyone? -
Hello,
I've updated to windows 8.1 and run into touch keyboard issue. Now it appears every time I touch text input field in modernUI, regardless of physical keyboard being opened or closed. Does anybody know the solution? I've just disabled touch input service for now, but I'd like to find a real fix as I use tablet mode sometimes.
Thanks. -
Camera problem after windows 8.1 upgrade - Sony's Community Site
Follow that thread to see the aggravation. I LOVED the face recognition when it was working. Since my 8.1 upgrade, I can't get it to work.
One other note: If I use the Sony CamScanner app, the rear facing camera works fine. Originally I thought both cameras were inoperable. -
The important thing here is that I did not manually download and install updates at all.
The only thing which failed to work after doing this is WiDi which isn't important to me, but hopefully there is a driver update for it.BobLoblawBtchz likes this. -
2 & 3. I dunno about you, but I see this level of vertical angle deviation and backlight bleed with pretty much any IPS screen on a notebook or desktop - even e.g. Apple's supposed (especially given the way Anand drools over every one) premium displays.
-
1. Yes, I knew the display angle was non adjustable to begin with but given that it is non adjustable, I would expect much better viewing angle to make up for that, which unfortunately is not the case.
2. Coming from a multiple Macbook Pros w/ retina there is a noticeable downgrade in colour depth and brightness; plus the Apple had no bleeding at all even when its brightness is turned max. I also compared the Duo's display to the MS Surface, and it did not have any bleeding issues.
3. I agree the build quality is generally good, but definately far from the best. Whether they use magnesium or aluminum doesn't really matter at all to me; however, I do wish that it feels more metal like and is more durable. I've had the Duo for 2 weeks and under careful usage, the back already has visible scuffs. I couldn't image what would happen to those plastic corners on the display as I see most of the display models in Sony stores are chipped. Compared to Apple's aluminium bodies, the Duo definitely loses out.
Well I still really love the pen features but knowing the next revision of Duo can be so much better, I returned it in anticipation. -
If you want the features the Duo offers over the Barbiebook, the brightness (and the grain to a degree) is something you'll have to accept - it's the touch layer. Apart from that, the Duo's display does pretty well in terms of colour depth and representation: I presume if it's that important to you, you've bothered calibrating the Duo while comparing it to an equivalent Barbiebook, yes?
-
I was only using it because i thought it was the only alternative to entering a password which i didnt want to do every time
but then i found picture password, which is what i use now. it is faster and easier so i uninstalled fastaccess -
Does anybody have a way to turn the computer monitor off without making the computer sleep? the way you almost close the lid on a laptop and it turns the led's off but not the machine...
the closest thing i have found is pressing [Fn] + F7 and selecting second monitor only.
then when you want to bring the screen back up press it again and it resets automatically.
Useful when listening to music and downloading things in desktop while AFK.
(things downloading in Metro apps continue in sleep because they stay connected in "connected standby." Firefox has "Nightly" in metro, if you're sick of IE)
EDIT: nevermind this doesn't stick unless you have another monitor connected. dang... -
It's a simple keyboard macro. extract it and run the .exe or if you have autohotkey run the script, whichever.
here is the link. Sony and Microsoft shouldn't be leaving it up to their consumers to add the most basic of features into their systemsits sketchy i know but it works. you will have to trust me in that i'm not smart enough to make malware LOL

The way i fix loggin camera issue is to reset the fast access software by just log in using password, going into fast access software options and reset configuration. And that is it. The only thing is that the issue is back every now and then, specially when going out of battery.
Greetings. -
Hi all
Has the wifi issue been resolved? I'm planning to order this beautiful machine but I'm afraid I'm gonna get the same trouble like many others.
On the Sony site there is a list with fixes (updated Dec. 12/2013) and some encouraging comments.

... So what does everyone else think the Duo's made of?
I've been seeing a lot of reference to "carbon fibre case construction" and I can't actually track down definitive Sony based information on where the carbon fibre is. I don't for example think it's in any major part of the body. Here's my guess - I haven't taken the machine apart or anything, but it's what I think according to the material sounds/feels like and also down to things like moulding cues.
Bottom shell: Magnesium
Keyboard tray (extending into part of the back of the unit as well as the side edges): Aluminium
Screen Hinge-Stand: Aluminium
Rear top vent area (around the hinge-stand): Carbon-fibre reinforced plastic
Rear cap (where the ports are): Carbon-fibre reinforced plastic
Screen back: Magnesium
Screen side edges: Plastic or carbon-fibre reinforced plastic
Anyone have official answers? -

Hi,
I'm new here so first I'd like to say hello to everybody!
I was looking into the WiFi issue intensively for the last couple of days and I found some new official instructions to improve WiFi performance on the sony website which extremely improved the wireless connection strength and speed for me. Check it out at https://us.en.kb.sony.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/43724/c/65,66/p/48903,49902,74250,90778/. It seems that the solution is mainly to switch the bandwidth capability to 11a/b/g:20/40MHz in the driver settings. -
I think the Sony Duo 13 is a great laptop/tablet..
But the stylus is seriously flawed: ergonomically you can't find the right-click button; there is a second, larger, totally useless button that you will hit by mistake; the buttons are not reprogrammable; sometimes the right-click button won't do what it should so you have to use the touchpad; and there is nowhere to store the stylus. Don't clip it with the pen-clip Sony provide: the clip will break. And Sony will ask you to send the entire computer back to them so they can change the stylus clip.
The stylus is an absolute disaster.

Hello to everybody
My Huawei WWAN LTE is not working under Windows 8.1. It shows as a generic wan modem device with an exclamation mark in the Device Manager. The device can not be initialized. "One Click internet" reports that it can not find a modem at all.
What I tried until now without success:
- I reverted back to the original driver for Win 8 using "Vaio Care" and the driver files from the Sony website.
- I reinstalled the Windows 8.1 driver from the Website.
- I uninstalled the driver using the uninstall routine in the program files folder.
- I also tried to insert a SIM card, but that did not help as well.
- And of course I searched this forum and the whole web for a solution.
Some background information: I had a really hard time with my Vaio Duo 13 in the last two months. I did not manage to remove all the McAfee bloatware crap, so I did a clean install of windows 8 as a final resort. I installed all the drivers from the Sony website by hand (lot's of work!). After that I upgraded to Windows 8.1. And again I installed all the drivers and updates for 8.1 by hand. Under Windows 8 the modem was recognized by the system.
Any suggestions? -

Morning all,
I received my CTO Duo last month but had to send it back due to one or two issues. The replacement was suppose to be sent by 28th November. This did not happen. After ringing Sony a few times, I am advised by their Netherlands staff that Due 13 is being refreshed and that's why mine will not be built till January 2014.

Hi,this product definitely has a lot noise problems. When you start your computer speakers makes noise -very quietly- like turning on and turning off in 2 sec periods. I returned my Duo because I cant live with such problems. -
I live in Canada where the WWAN module wasn't offered, however our local carriers all allow third party devices (they provide the SIM card).
Does anyone know if a WWAN module can be installed on the Duo 13 after shipping? Is there the slot for them? Is there a MiniPCI slot available an antenna dongle that can be used for a user-installed card? -

I have bought Sony vaio duo 13 (i5 model). I am trying to use the pen for handwriting either in website, email and word documents. it works but I have a problem in recognition of words; I write separate characters for every word but it does not give me time to complete the word or writing dots on letter as required to write "i" for instance. i think i am missing how to setup the speed of handwriting to correctly type words.
Could you help please?
Thank you -
I do have a solution for not being able to differentiate the buttons though - I got the idea from my cousin's kids who cover everything in cat/etc stickers. Just get a raised sticker for the button.
e.g. Amazon.com: 6 Sheet - Cute Emboss Cartoon Sticker for Girl Scrapbooking: Everything Else
I've tried googly eye stickers as well, but some of them don't bend well. Have a go anyway, why not. -
What are the chances of Sony releasing a new version of the Duo 13 at CES next week? I know it's only been out for 6 months but they may release a version with some changes?
