I was thinking of getting these for my VAIO Z: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...471656&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT#ht_2714wt_939

basically clear stickers for all the keys.

Anybody know if these will work?

Hey mate, I am very interested in playing FSX on the Z. Can you fly around a major city with settings set around MEDIUM and check the fps? Thanks so much in advance!

I was playing with the new Z at B and H, and wow just wow, its so small and so awesome, the build quality seems to be a lot better now too, it was very very light, i just don't know how do you turn the backlit keyboard on? Also i want to know why is it Best Buy is selling the basic model config with a 128 ssd, 4 gigs of ram, etc.. 1,699 and j and r and b and h are selling it for 1,899? Here best buy's link http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Sony+-+...lver/9740911.p?id=1218165345006&skuId=9740911

Thanks so much. I really won't believe my eyes if the Z can run FSX at a decent graphics quality over a major city :)

    Look forward to it mate.

Yes, the prem. carb. is just for looks. IMO, it makes even look more expensive. I still question whether the Silver is Prem. Carb., unless someone can verify.

I managed to see those diagonal lines on the 1920x1080 screens of the Z's at Sony's display room both in Japan and Hong Kong...however on my 1920x1080 screen I can't seem to see them.

I just worry that after a while they will fall off, smear around, and leave sticky residue on the keys. Nothing worse than sticky keys ;)
(It was bad enough getting all those dang stickers off the palmrest: Intel, Nvidia, Windows7, Energy star, Verizon)

Does anyone know if the old docking station VGP-PRZ1 will work with the new Z? I noticed they came out with a new one, but I would like to not have to replace all my old Z590 accessories. I also have the old power supply (AC19V26), batteries, and internal Blu-Ray burner. Anyone have luck using the old gear? I'd like to not burn out my new Z whenever it finally ships!

Hi Oscar2, can you talk a little about how you completely removed those sticks off the palmrest of the z? did that affect the paint on the palmrest?

    Thanks.

It had no effect on the paint. It looks like they were never there.
I peeled them off by placing my fingernail underneath. The residue that remained can be removed with either goo-gone or a kerosene type product like liquid-wrench.

I tried peeling one of those stickers off a demo to test the difficulty, and it left fingernail scratches. I tried buffing it out and it seem to remain permanent. Is there an easier method?

Well, when I peel them off, I just put a fingernail underneath and lift, so it really shouldn't scratch (I don't really rub it or anything). Then any residue I get with Goo Gone (which also doesn't scratch).

Just wiggle the laptop around a bit; eventually, the pixels will "fall into" the familiar diagonal wavy line pattern.

So um, what should be the procedure for when we first get it? Make an image or something? If so, do we do that after we have customized it how we like? And what program do we use? And is there anything else we do - like that battery care thing, or doing something with RAID? And is this enough questions? And what is the meaning of life? :D

Since there are a number of you getting your Z's now, it would be great if some of the I7-620M owners and the I5-540M owners could post benchmarks. I have read all of the speculation about performance vs power drain of the I5/I7 but it would be nice to see a real-world comparisin of identical machines with different cores.

Still waiting for my Z, but I plan on getting this:

Caselogic PLS-13 Neoprene 13-Inch Neoprene Laptop Sleeve (Black)

    Great reviews, and fairly inexpensive.

I plan on using it in conjunction with my existing laptop bag -- mainly for extra protection (on a near-$3000 laptop, I'm taking care of this baby), and because my laptop bag is just a hair too big for a 13" laptop, so this will help fill out the space a bit. And I could always use it by itself for very short trips.

To those of you (especially in the USA) that have received your Zs: what was the sequence of your order status messages? Many of you have already received your units, despite the fact that you placed yours after mine (March 11). My order status was in "Shipping Update" for the longest time, but just yesterday changed to "Processing". Not sure if that's a good or bad thing. The estimated ship date has remained unchanged at March 23.

I ordered the Swedish version yesterday. It has

    i7 620M
    6GB DDR3 RAM
    1920x1080 screen
256 GB SSD (presumably 4x64 according to others)
    DVD/RW

Sonystyle.se said the 1st batch was sold out, and they didn't know when the 2nd was due. "IT-shoppen" claimed they were going to get one of the 1st batch around the 25th so I have reserved one of those.

Any Swedes here with experience dealing with them? They have some mixed reviews on "Prisjakt".

I noticed that by default the Windows defrag was scheduled to run every Wednesday at 1am.
I turned it off but, just out of curiosity, I started a run on it. I figured windows would do nothing since it's supposed to be knowledgeable about SSD's.
It analyzed the drive then started to defrag it (before I canceled it).

I notice there is a note on that screen that says, "Ony disks that can be defragmented are shown".

So what gives? Ain't Win7 supposed to be smart about defrag on ssd's?

And if not, shouldn't we all be sure to turn off the Wed. 1am thing?

    Hi there,

got myself the Full HD version in Sweden
    6GB ram
    c-i7m 2,6
    4x 64 gb in raid 0

Loving it so far - much better than the old Z - way more silent, faster, way way faster and better built.
The screen seems also better, less obtrusive color saturation.

However, one gripe so far - when pressing the VAIO button on top it mutes. Fine, however, I'd like to set up another function, bring up the vaio control center for example..

How the heck do I do that?
Sorry if the answer is overly obvious ;)

I've been on "Shipping Update" with an estimated ship date of 2/09/10 since I placed the order for my VPCZ11FHX/XQ Signature Z on 2/08/10. It's still showing that despite the fact that this model seems to have shipped to others, including people that ordered after I did.....

Yes, Windows 7 is supposed to not run defrag on SSDs.

The question might be whether Windows 7 sees it as an SSD, when it's hidden behind a RAID.

Yes, disable the defragmenter. Also disable the boot-time rearranger.
SuperFetch and Readyboost (to non-SDD cards) I wouldn't worry about -- RAM is still faster than SDD, so they may still give a minor boost.

I don't know about the Vaio button but the one just to the left of it can be set in the Vaio control center under Special Buttons. It's called S1. By default was set to "Organize Windows" on my u.s. spec. There are a number of other options but one of them is "Launch Application" and you specify what by using the 'settings' button.

So, I purchased the VPC-Z114GX/S through buy.com for $2028, got it on Wednesday. After a few days deliberation, I decided to use windows anytime upgrade to upgrade it to Windows 7 Ultimate to use the Bitlocker function.

After I did, I was in the process of turning on Bitlocker when it notified me that my computer doesn't have a TPM. Further diving into this, I can't seem to find any mention of TPM in any configurations on the sony style site (not surprising), but when I go to Sony Support, I can find TPM drivers under the $4500 signature series. Installing these didn't work.

I seem to remember in the early days of discovery on this laptop that it did have a TPM. I know its available on SonyStyle Japan configurations, but did Sony cheap out and not include it in some of the US configurations? I just figured the TPM was automatically included with the fingerprint sensor. Any ideas? No TPM is not a deal-breaker for me, I just wish I would have known before I wend and did the anytime upgrade.

    Forumers,

Seeing that there will be a lot of forumers getting their hands on their Zs this week and the coming weekend, someone here should post steps on how to properly maintain the new Vaio Z, and it has to be posted where it can be easily found.

For example, just until now, I didn't know Windows 7 can set to auto-defrag -- I assume this auto-defrag setting is default despite the laptop uses SSD.

So please, if someone can make a complete lists of steps to take excellent care of our beloved Z and to give it the extra life it deserves, that would be much appreciated.

    thanks in advance

Well, that sucks. Your delay is even worse than mine. (Well, technically mine isn't a delay yet -- the 23rd is still a few days away; I'm just jealous of the others who have already received theirs.)

Maybe Sony doesn't like NorCal folks like us.... :(

That's about the same as my previous Z, which had about a 93% charge after a restful night.

Where in Control Panel can you Turn OFF? There's so many folders in there, its easy to get lost.

One way is to right click on C drive. Choose "Properties" then under "Tools" select the "Defragment now" button. On mine this was set to go off once a week by default.

Another way is to type "defrag" in the "Start Button" search field and then select "Disk Defragmenter"
