You did forget to mention, that the "Advanced Mini Dock" supports the Dual Link VGA/DVI with an extra 256MB ATI Radeon X1300 Dual-DVI display adapter only.

I called back "tech support" today since they did not get back to me for the last 3 weeks.

The woman I talked to talked to her "supervisor" and he told her that if you connect an external display on the HDMI output, directly to an HDMI display without using a converter, one should be able to choose ANY RESOLUTION that the display supports.

Did anyone try and connect the Z directly to a 30 inch display with HDMI input?

Yeah, there's lots of posts of the T400, T500, and W500 working with a 2560x1600 monitor through the Advanced Mini Dock, both on this forum and others.

I wanted to try the Sony anyway, because I loved the idea of a light-weight 13.1" laptop, with a 1600x900 screen. The T400 by comparison is a 14.1" laptop that weighs almost 50% more than the Z, but only has 1440x900. The T500 is a 15.4" that weighs 2lbs more than the Z, with up to 1680x1050. The W500 is the exact same thing as the T500, except W for "Workstation" users, so it has a FireGL graphics card, and up to 1920x1200 res. With the 9-cell battery, it weighs about twice as much as the Z. $700 cheaper though, for equivalent CPU/RAM/HD/opticaldrive specs.

Nope, the "Advanced Mini Dock" is not the same as the "Advanced Dock". AMD has no expansion slot for a graphics card, only a DVI pass-through.

Lenovo does a *HORRIBLE* job of documenting what configs work with a 30" monitor. You can call and talk to people until you are blue in the face, they will just tell you lies or transfer you to someone else, same as tech support at Sony. However, there's a lot of customers who have got it to work, and posted their results on this forum and others:

My Gateway XHD3000 monitor has an HDMI input. I tried a direct connection from the Z590 to the HDMI input on the monitor. The highest resolution I got was 1920*1200. I can get 2560*1600 on the same monitor using a DVI output from my Desktop PC.

Provantage has the return policy for every item listed as either "Manufacturer's Warranty" or "Standard 30 Days Return". When I purchased the Z590 and dock, both were listed as "Standard 30 Days Return". The last 2 times I called about a RMA number (after submitting their webform and waiting for days), they said the RMA number would be along soon, and each time I checked the website both items were listed as "Standard 30 Days Return". Today however I called again, and the woman I talked to said the dock is "Manufacturer's Warranty", and I'll be charged a 20% restocking fee. She denied it was ever anything different, and offered to reduce the restocking fee to 10%. I had no choice but to agree, so I can finally get rid of this stupid piece of junk laptop that doesn't meet specs I wasted hours on the phone with sony confirming.

Sony's lying about product specs has cost me $100 in shipping, plus $15 in restocking fees, as well as weeks of my time wasted before I'll get a new laptop.

I'm not going to buy another Sony product, or anything from Provantage.

Sorry, but HDMI is only as good as the grafic card gets. And by the way, a HDMI-DVI adapter wouldn't change things at all.
The cards in the Z don't support Dual Link DVI, and that's what you need for a 30". Period.

watchrabbit, I think you managed to be wrong in all the things you wrote in your post. Period. :)

The geforce graphics card is supposed to support 2560x1600.

The geforce graphics card does support dual link dvi.

2560x1600 can also be done over HDMI.

See this link for specs of the 9300M:

    http://www.nvidia.com/object/geforce_9300M_features.html

    To quote the specs:

    "Dual-link DVI Support
Able to drive the industry's large and high resolution flat-panel displays up to 2560x1600."

Im going to bump this one.

Im really intressted in buyin a Vaio Z with the dockingstation. I still read in some forums that it can drive a 30" dell 3008 with the 2560x1600 resolution through the docking station.

Can anyone confirm that this work?
