Sony is amazing. On the same page as the ads for each of the today-unveiled FW490CTO and the already announced pre-configured models is the ad for the FW390CTO as well: http://www.sonystyle.com/webapp/wcs...0151&langId=-1&categoryId=8198552921644564390.

But, unbelievably, Sony just _raised_ the advertized price of the base model older FW390CTO by a hundred dollars over the FW490CTO advertized -- because of the unavailability of the lowest-end processor (sold out on the 390s). Nonetheless, what a marketing faux pas!

And, interestingly enough, Windows OneCare has disappeared and been replaced with Norton products! No mention of the upgrade to Windows 7 that people have posted about the preconfigured FWs....

Microsoft is discontinuing OneCare and replacing it with the free Microsoft Security Essentials antivirus. Right now it is testing, public release should be in the fall.

    and it should be said:

Microsoft Security Essentials will be the best antivirus product on the market. Better than Nod32. Better than Kapersky. Most certainly better than AVG, Avira and Avast.

of course, keep your subscriptions if you've paid for them, but if you're using a free AV program, when plan on switching.

I'm a total newby to this forum and notebooks in general.

I got a VGN-SR46GD in July 2009, are you saying that they were available in 2005?

Based on the pages I've skimmed through on this thread, are we not expecting the Z to be bumped to the 3.06 processor this month or the next? I was expecting SonyStyle USA to follow its Japanese counterpart and add the 3.06 option this month... (Even SS UK has the 3.06 option when bought as a CTO -- albeit it's ridiculously expensive!)

Could someone kindly clarify this before I spend ~$3,000 on a Z with the P9700 2.8GHz, only to later realize that I should have waited a few weeks for the 3.06?

    Thanks in advance!

Do you honestly believe 200 MHz is gonna make a difference?

No... But wouldn't a processor bump usually create a reduction in price of other, slower processors? Thus, the 2.8 would be cheaper when a 3.06 option is available?

Depends, not always. The 3.06 CPU price could be added on top of the 2.8 price. Sony could leave the prices just the way they are and just add the option for the 3.06 after.

Either way, what Zxxx refresh did you buy and what country because in Canada, the Z790 with the 2.8 CPU starts from $2240

I haven't ordered one just yet. As I said, I am/was procrastinating the decision based on the possibility of a price drop on the 2.8 CPU on the Z790CTO. But, if the Canadian SonyStyle is anything to go by, it includes the 2.8 CPU and the new colors in their 'Summer' refresh link from the homepage. So, I suppose that implies that there won't be any further updates until Q4 or 2010.

The spec I want on SS Canada totals to ~$3050US ($3300CAD). Wolf04, it's actually a lot cheaper if I buy from SS US for $2550US (or $2750US without 7% Student discount).
