I keep getting a memory allocation error with MPP and the ENC file. Shouldn't be happening as it's only 4kb.

Would it be possible that you send me dsrd.enc files that you have. I have one example and I am trying to add my hardware id there.. it's bit annoying as it's compressed xml.

I believe that they will provide dsrd with list of all drives in their enc file, I guess they need to put some attention on their strategical partners first. In the mean while I will play with enc files.

I also got applied to get info on ther recent firmware release notes here. http://semicon.samsung.de/relaunch/products/ssd/firmware_update.asp

    Also,

OK, you can download the OCZ, SuperTalent and OCZ dsrd.enc files here. Size, Hash and MD5 are identical for ST and Corsair, OCZ is significant bigger.

    Good luck!

As far as I see inside of exe file, it looks like it's using some Phar Lap dos extender to use more than 640KB memory available in dos.

I have also seen that lenovo does it using very different software ( http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?sitestyle=lenovo&lndocid=MIGR-69806)

Exception that you are getting isn't about file size, it is probably something else that they haven't foreseen so it looks like memory alloc issue. Try using different version of DOS for building bootable USB. I have used dos 7 that comes with windows 98.

I did bootable usb using HP Drive Key Boot Utility, (google cp006049.exe) and optionally (SP27608.exe).

Huh? I was talking about using My Personal Programmer to edit the ENC file, I have no problems booting any of the flashers. None of them find the drive

About BIOS version R5031M with advance menu hack, did some one test it ? It was post by cosmok I think (thank you for that!).
Does some one has a screen shot of those advance BIOS menu for Z serie?

No one has a screen shot ? I am still having a "loudly" laptop which I think a specific BIOS could erase that noisy sound.

I do not believe playing with BIOS settings will quiet your laptop. If anything, it could make things worse. Most of the hidden settings in the latest BIOS (R5031M3, or similar) do not even apply to the VAIO Z, they are generic options, that's why they are hidden.

The main areas of interest in hacking VAIO BIOSes used to be enabling the VT (virtualization), enabling the RAID option (on systems with enhanced controllers) and removing RAM limitations. IMHO trying to quiet your Z thru BIOS settings won't help at all.

If you feel your system is too loud, you may try: (1) undervolting the CPU or (2) switching to 'Silent mode' in the VAIO Control Centre >> Power Options.

Thank you all guys :), very kind from you. Well well well, still looking for a solution, if it is not possible in the BIOS, might resell it and bug the new Z serie which have a light keyboard.

    Hi

I flashed my vaio Z31WN/B with the R5031M3 bios in order to take advantage of the slic 2.1 function. That part worked very well, and I like the advanced menu.
However I hoped that this bios would also enable the possibility to upgrade my vaio with more ram. The 4GB limit is quite irritating. I have installed 4GB kingston ram, the components are made by hynix which is also the manufactur of the ram which was installed from the beginning. So in total I now have 6GB of ram in my laptop. But windows 7 x64 only see 4GB. I have tried enabling VT, and switching the ram with no luck. Do I need to do something within the bios or am I using the wrong version? I hope someone could give me a little help? :)

Something is wrong with your RAM.
I have the same model (Z31WN/B) and R5031M3 BIOS, 6GB run perfectly in my Windows 7 x64. How much does your BIOS report?

Wow, thanks for the fast reply NHT!
Well that's both good and bad news. I'm happy it's possible to upgrade the ram with my model and this bios. But I may have chosen the wrong ram then.
This is the ram I purchased: http://shop.kingston.com/partsinfo.asp?ktcpartno=KVR1066D3S7/4G
Could you please let me know which ram you've installed successfully?

EDIT: Sorry I forgot to answer your question, the bios also reports 4096MB of ram :-(

I installed a Hynix 4GB ;). Maybe you need to try Corsair because someone said that he can even install 2 x 4GB Corsair in his Z.

Hehe, my kingston ram has hynix written all over it. Ohh well.
I guess you just need to accept the fact that owning a vaio is hard work.
Thank you very much for the input, I'll post back when/if I manage to install the extra ram.

You need Kingston M51264H70 ram. It could be a reason why your current Kingston ram doesn't work.

That is indeed some very pricey ram..
I'm afraid it's a bit out of my league.
I'm looking at this Corsair version here: http://www.provantage.com/corsair-cm3x4gsd1066~7CSMC07F.htm
Do you reckon that should do the trick?
It's a bit more exp. than the other Kingston ram I got. But I'm buying online which means I get 2 weeks right of return which is quite helpful in my situation.

I think the problem lies with the power wattage required by the 4GB RAM stick as mentioned either in the following thread:

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=421846

That thread starter, Sniper_Sung, is an expert in this matter since he had been through the frustrations of not being able to get 8GB to run on his Vaio Z notebook but eventually succeeding. Hopefully, he'll be able to help you out a bit. Good luck. :)

When installing RAM make sure to push it all the way in while at an angle before rotating it into flush/latched position. There may be lose contact somewhere.

Thank you very much for the help guys. I can see the topic has been discussed earlier.
I've decided to go with the Corsair RAM.
I will let you know what happens when I have tried it.

ZugZug: I have been very thorough when installing the RAM. It detects the 4GB no matter which slot I use for the blocks.
According to the other thread by Sniper_Sung the system should see the RAM instantly, so that must mean I've just had bad luck with the one I chose.
Hopefully it'll work out with the Corsair I've ordered. Otherwise I'll have to hunt down some Hynix or Micron RAM.

Sorry if this has been asked before, but I started reading all these posts and I am a bit confused. I have a VAIO Z530n (or Z1) and it seems that it would be possible to flash BIOS R5031 without a problem. Is this correct?

    Thanks!

Hi all. I'd like to make dual booted system on my Vaio Z31XN - linux + win 7. As I understood I need to have BIOS with advanced menu enabled to set VGA switching policy into static mode.

I have found some BIOS'es on the page 7 - R5031M3A or R4044M3 Advanced SLIC 2.1. It is written in this thread that it works with Z31WN and I think it's almost the same as I have. Can someone more experienced to confirm that it works for me too?

    Thanks in advance.

I made those files, should work on any first generation Z. Check what version you currently have and flash the corresponding file if you want to retain continuity.

Can you explain how do I have to use these files to upgrade my BIOS.
When I run f.bat a console window appears and instantly closes with no result. What is wrong?

I have tried to uses .EFI file to unlock advanced menu, but it does not work with the latest bios.

    upd.
I have managed to upgrade my BIOS booting in DOS. I confirm that R5031M3 works with Z31XN.
    Thank you.

Did anyone managed to do anything with that? I already flashed the BIOS two times, but still getting the ERRORM3 message in CPU-Z and Vaio Control Center. Not that it's a big deal, but I would like to have it error-free :)

    Hi All

    Please help.....

I broke my BIOS password....Sony Service Centre Melbourne Australia in their wisdom want me to take half a day to drop my laptop to them, charge me $170AU, take a few days and then make me come the them to pick it up....all to rest the password from a one-time-key....

Originally, with no password set, I dumped my BIOS rom, then I flashed a broken one (100% my stupidity), then there appeared a request for password...now no matter what BIOS I flash I can't get past the password....

Is there a way I can modify my DUMP.ROM original to write everything, including the no password????

    Thanks in advance....

cosmok, any chance you could e-mail or private message me the password that you would have used for this BIOS rom....I'm stuck with paying Sony Service to do a one-time-key password....

    Thanks in advance....
