Does the Vaio Z series laptop have a SPDIF output that can output Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound?

No, but nor do i remember ever seeing such an output on a laptop. It outputs spdif 5.1 over HDMI.

Quite a lot of laptops have the 3.5mm audio output double up as a SPDIF output that's why i was asking if the 3.5mm audio output on the Vaio Z Series also doubles up as a SPDIF output.

In that case, maybe it does. Most laptops use the same Realtek audio cards anyway so I wouldn't be surprised.
I'm using Win 7 and the automatically-installed drivers and I don't see such an option though. -
Would be good if it does because then i can connect it to the optical input on my av reciever and get dolby digital surround sound. My av reciever doesn't have HDMI connections so getting surround sound that way would be tricky.
Is there anything in the audio settings about a SPDIF digital output?
Does anyone else know if the 3.5 mm audio ouput on the Z Series can also act as a SPDIF output? -
It does not have a built in digital output throudg the 3.5mm audio output. I bought myself an external optical out usb audio for my Z.
