Ronin: Great thread, thanks for your working in putting it up.
Can you tell me which of the 3 downloads contains the items not available from sony's site? I've already downloaded the drivers from them, I'm thinking mainly of the hotfixes and such, I can download the intel drivers myself, just don't want to dl all of your files when I only really need about 1M worth of files.
Thanks.

Ronin,
I wanted to ask you about a confusing aspect of your instructions - specifically the VAIO Camera utility.
In your first post in the thread (the detailed one with most of the information) - you specifically say to install a newer version (SOAOTH-01146101-UN.exe) of the utility NOT from the Sony US site.
Later in the thread (4th page), when "billy" asks about this link/file, you say:
"Dude!!! So you have been installing the wrong file up until now"
... and point him toward the US file (SODCAM-00457801-US.exe).
To confuse things even further, one of the download packages you created (Part B of the big download) contains one of these files, and the smaller file (just the hotfixes and a few applications) contains the other.
Can you please confirm which utility version is the right/best one to use?
You might then want to update your post(s) and packages as well to clarify this.
Thanks in advance,
DC -
Anyways... let me try and explain:
There are 4 completely different files/drivers we are talking about here:
1. Webcam Driver
This has 3 files in all... two for the Webcam to Start Working and the third one is the Hotfix to resolve the Shutdown Freeze... The three files are as follows:
i. Camera Driver Utility: SODCAM-00457801-US
ii. Camera Driver: SODCAM-01074405-US
iii. Hotfix: KB909667
Now, here the 'Camera Driver Utility' IS NOT the 'VAIO Camera Utility'. Once you install these three, your Webcam just Starts functioning properly and your SZ doesn't freeze anymore on shutdown.
2. VAIO Camera Utility
These are the controls for your Webcam. These controls get active whenever you start using your camera... You can adjust zoom/brightness etc with this utility... The original VAIO Camera Utility is bundled with the 'Sony Notebook Utilities' file and DOES NOT WORK after a clean install. Thats why we have an updated file which WORKS...
And this file is: SOAOTH-01146101-UN
Thats it...
I guess basically you got confused between Camera Driver Utility and VAIO Camera UtilityI hope its clear now...
And Billy... well, he basically wanted to install the 'Hotfix' (KB909667) and somehow got an idea that 'VAIO Camera Utility' (SOAOTH-01146101-UN) was the Hotfix... I can understand these things happen when you are very passionate about your laptop and it doesn't work -
HI All,

ronin.achilles: Just to thank you for your effort on puttting the guide together. Thanks to you, my SZ-110/B was reborn without bloatware and shows no adverse effects.

Hello there! I've managed to complete the whole clean install on my SZ-110, but I'm still experiencing a freeze-problem, which can be fixed by a Camera HotFix. I tried to use it, but I have a not-English version of Windows (russian) , and it refuses to update the system. I even extracted the files within this patch, but I don't know what to do with them. Should I update the file stream.sys? If yes, than in what way? Help me, please, to get rid of this last ******* problem!
-
I understand your frustration. I'm as well struggling with this last problem. I'm running a Dutch version of Windows and the Amercian hotfix doesn't work with me either.
Let me know if you found an answer! -
Oh what fun.
First off thanks for the input on this thread, have managed to do install XP clean insrtall on my SZ1XP. Great work.
Ok Here is my problem,
The box is a dual boot.
The XP partion is clean, works, supports all that I need and is fine.
A few of the the apps did not install due to wrong version but I managed to work around that.
The 2003 Partion seems to be fine bar the display.
I can't get either
A NVDVID-A1040607-US.EXE - nVIDIA® GeForce Go 7400 Graphics Controller Driver
B INDVID-01035204-US.EXE - Mobile Intel® 945GM Express Chipset Family Graphics Controller Driver
To install as they come up with wrong version.
The files out of SZ1_Video wont install or install with device manage error.
The nvidia-84.54-geforcego-7400-7600-2kxp-whql.exe which I downlaoded of the Nivida site comes up with wrong model.
In Device manager I have the default vga display adapter and cant get
"Nvidia geforce co 7400 8302" to show up (which is fine on the xp side).
So the bottom line is that I cant use all my screen and stuck with 1024 X 768.
Any help ideas ??? -
I am doing a clean install on a UK version SZ1 XP/C. I am currently compiling the drivers ready to burn to CD, but some are not identifiable in C:/drivers or in the download of originally installed drivers from club-vaio. Does this matter, it appears I am missing the sony shared library and sony notebook utils. Has anyone done an XP/C and got around this? I am a bit short of time, but unfortunately already screwed up the sytem and don't want to do a full recovery from the disc. Also the wireless keyboard and mouse util is missing....spose this makes no difference as i dont plan to use these.
Advice please!??!
Thanks

Ok So maybe a fresh install is not the best idea!!!
2003 Server Users on a VGN-SZ1XP (Europe)
There is no offical version of the display driver thus you might find that you have errors while trying to install the drivers (not for this device...).
What I have found out is that you can run in "STAMINA" Mode and you will get the whole use of your display.
In Speed mode you end up with a smaller resolution and thus you will not fill the screen.

XP Users on a VGN-SZ1XP (Europe)
We seem to have a problem with the DVD.
This is what I can repreduce.
The dvd Player works well with code 2 dvd (Thats my hardware) but not with code 1 (Thats USA) on my European device (as in code 2).
The code 1 dvd that I am using works fine on my dell with version 3 of dvd x Player.
On my sz1 it dies a very bad visual death!!!
I have tried both DVD X Player version 3 and version 4
which is a code free dvd player.
Anybody come across the same problem ??
1) Yes I have newest version of directx
2) Yes I do know that the dvd works as I can play code 2dvds
3) Yes I do know that the dvd code 1 works as I can play it on my dell with same software. (dvd x player version 3)
4) Yes I have read the Faq on the site and it tells me to check the hardware divers for the dvd palyer.

hey, i just got my sz today and decided to do this install after messing with it for a second.
then as i was installing the intel chipest (part 1) thing, it says that it cant find the file "usbehci.sys" man this is a real pain. does anyone have the restore cd's or dvd's that i can buy from them (for cheaper than sony !!) and maybe that would work ? grr i should have just left it ! -
ok i got it from driverguide.com, proceeding to step 2 now. hopefully maybe ill get a full widescreen display sometime soon !!
and does anyone know where i can get the sony backgrounds from ? i liked that blue one that said vaio. sweet. -

im thinking about getting an custom SZ240. Will these steps work with any SZ model?
-
hey meteo, i have a custom sz240 and i dont know if im doing something wrong or what, but i would have to say that i would much rather just leave the notebook the way it was when it came out of the box and just uninstall some of the trial software instead of reformatting. its soooo much easier and now my computer is like totally messed up there is adual boot, the fingerprint thing doesnt work, and my audio doesnt work. good thing i have the accidental warranty, im gonna give them a call and see if they can just put an image of the orginal drive back on there or something. grr.
-
does anyone know how to use the accidental warranty that i bought to send in my notebook for them to put everything back to the way it was ? i just got my notebook today, so i dont know when i get the warranty form thing that says i actually got the warranty.
-
This seems not to be the case on my SZ1 after the fresh install (did not test if before).
Both the ver 3 and 4 have the same effect, it sees the drive, loads a sort of picture and hangs in never never land.
Can anybody with a out of the box install test a dvd from thier region and a DVD form another Region with the trailware of dvd x player and post the results (prity please with a 2 gig SD card on top)

Update
I have tried the conbination of WINDVD and DVDIdle Pro and am not able to read a code 1 dvd. (my box is set to code 2) -

- You mentioned that you have a dual boot. Did you intentionally set this up (do you have another OS installed?) or did you forget to delete the factory installed Windows XP partition?
If it's the latter, remember to delete all the partitions on the hard drive, create a new one, then format and use it for the WinXP OS. Set the partition to 40GB or some other size that you like. It doesn't have to be the whole 120GB.
- What Windows XP standalone version do you own?
If you own the original Windows XP without any integrated service packs, download the SP2 update from Microsoft and install it before you install any of the drivers.
- Did you download the drivers from the correct support page?
The drivers for the 240P are located here: http://esupport.sony.com/perl/swu-list.pl?mdl=VGNSZ240P&UpdateType=Everything
Download and install the original drivers then install any updated drivers later.
Some of the required drivers aren't located in that support page, so you will need download and install:
REMEMBER TO INSTALL THESE IN THE CORRECT ORDER LISTED IN THE FIRST POST. Also there is no bios update for your model so ignore that step.
Sony Programmable I/O Control Device Driver Utility, USB Mouse Controller, Protector Suite QL and its updates, Sony SmartWi Utility, and all the other additional files listed in first post notes.
When I did my clean installation I used the 945 chipset family driver located at Intel's website instead of the driver provided by Sony:
http://downloadfinder.intel.com/scripts-df/Product_Filter.asp?ProductID=816
In step 1, download and install "INF Update Utility [INFINST_AUTOL.EXE] (1103KB) 8.0.1.1002 6/6/2006"
I also didn't install the "Wireless Keyboard and Mouse Utility."
As ronin.achilles suggests, you should create cdr or dvdr with all the downloaded drivers and hotfixes and name them in order. Here's what mine looks like:
- You mentioned that you have a dual boot. Did you intentionally set this up (do you have another OS installed?) or did you forget to delete the factory installed Windows XP partition?
-
So I have to own a copy of windows in order to do this procedure?

A better way to toggle Wireless Only, Wireless + Bluetooth, and Bluetooth Only is to use SmartWiFi.
All SZs including Euro and Asian can use this version. http://rapidshare.de/files/24669308/SmartWi_1.2.0.020706.zip.html
The smartwi and wireless switching utilities do not need to run at the same time since they do the same job. If you already have the wireless switching utility installed you should uninstall it or disable it from running at start up.
Open the program after it's installed, click the wrench icon and uncheck the first three boxes. Apply the settings and close the program. Now you can use the Fn+F1 keys to toggle the connections. -
i cant find the driver for my fingerprint and built in camera and also Sony control device driver software. my vaio is SZ70B/B Japan ver (SZ1* on europe ver..).. anybody please help mee....

Hi
I've redone a clean software installation.
I think I have everything working properly.
There's one weird thing though. When I first got my Vaio SZ , in the wireless utility I could control 3 settings:
1- 2.4Ghz Wifi
2- 5Ghz Wifi
3- Bluetooth.
Now all I see there is 2.4Ghz Wifi and BLuetooth. The 5Ghz option is gone.
Any ideas?
Not that I will ever need it (I've never needed it ever).
Side note: As a note of advice, do not install the wireless utility or SwitchWi before updating the Sony Event Driver.
Also, install the HDD protection utility *after* installing the upgraded driver. Otherwise it's a pain to get HDD protection working again. You'll have to uninstall Sony Event service entirely, then boot in safe mode to uninstall the HDD application. Then re-install the HDD driver, then the event controller, then the HDD protection utility

You may want to update the Protector Suite QL utility to version 5.3.0 build 2813 while you're at it. Apparently for some odd reason Sony provided this version to all the UX and SZ models EXCEPT the SZ1XXs, but luckily it's available here without the model requirement check. -
Performed a clean install of XP, all utilities on my SZ240P. Everything seems fine, except I can't get any control over bluetooth. There is no bluetooth control anywhere in my control panel. I installed both the Toshiba Bluetooth USB Driver and the SmartWiFi utility -- am I missing another utility?
thanks,
fc -
Thanks for the answer.
Does that mean that 5Ghz wifi is gone, or only that you can't just turn off 2.4Ghz while leaving 5Ghz on?
I guess this is still possible in the settings of the 3945 driver itself.

You can actually use the Alps driver from Toshibas site. This is version 6.0.305.5 already and offers more features. The touchpad is the same in the SZ models and this driver works flawlessly with it. No Toshiba logos or anything.

Eh, really? That's kinda strange. I'll check that out asap. Thanks for the hint.

First off, top notch guide. Worked first time and there is a marked improvement in the machines responsiveness and speed.
1 thing is still annoying me though. After the install I have 2 removable storage devices in My Computer: "Memory Stick (D" and "SD / MMC (E
". Looks all good but E: drive doesn't appear to do anything, inserting a Duo card on the left comes under D: drive but if I insert the "memory card adaptor" on the right it installs a new device under "Removable Disk (G
" drive with a generic icon.
In devmgmt.msc E: show up under "SD1 Device" and is connected to the PCI Bridge, G: however is connected to the same USB controller as the webcam and comes under "Sony USB HS-CARD USB Device".
Any ideas on what the hell "SD / MMC (E" is and secondly how can I change the icon for the "Removable Disk (G
"?
Oh and does anybody know how to properly use the Vaio Power Managment software as a normal user? It's realy not clever being looged in as admin all the time but I still need to properly control the CPU speeds. -
Private-Cowboy Notebook Consultant
That SD/MMC drive is a known problem after a clean install. Nobody knows where its comming from or what it does. Simply go into the device manager and deactivate the SD/MMC drive and it wont bother you any further. Or simply hide the drive with TweakUI powertoys.
Changing the icon for the Express-Card drive is a nice idea, anybody knows how to do that?
I'm working as administrator anyway, so I cant comment on the power management. Works perfctly here. I use SafeGuard Easy for safety reasons. -
With a factory install does the SD/MMC drive not appear or does it tie into the memory card adaptor?
Am I right in saying that SafeGuard Easy is a disk encryption tool?
That won't solve my concerns. Running as an admin is generally bad news. If a virus or otherwise gets into the computer it will run with your credentials and have your privileges. If you are a normal user programs (or viruses) can't infect the Progam Files or Windows folders because users can't modify files in those folders. On the other hand a virus running with admin privileges can change any files it likes.
Prevention is always better than cure. -
Private-Cowboy Notebook Consultant
Well beeing non-administrator offer some help but won't be able to compete with a good virus scanner like Kaspersky. So I'd rather rely on those. Besides I change alot of system related stuff all the time - never ending optimization ;-) - and I'd need to reboot all the time.
And yes, Safeguard is HDD encryption. A pretty powerful one in fact. -
It's not that being non-admin has to compete with an anti-virus scanner.
Running as a normal user a virus simply won't be able to infect the system files. If a malicious code manages to get round your anti-virus and actually execute it will only reside in RAM, it won't be able to change the programs that run at boot so the next time you reboot it won't be there. Worst case a virus writes info into the startup folder of the individual user account in which case you can log in as administrator and remove it easily.
In reality you should never log in as an admin unless you really have to. Windows is the only OS that lets you (even forces the primary account into admin). Mac OS, Linux and Unix only have 1 admin account (root) and "admin" users can raise their privileges to admin level by re-entering their password.
I too make a lot of system changes but I use the runas command or makemeadmin scripts to raise my privileges. -
Anyway I can live with that for now.
The thing that is really peeing me off is the memory card thing. What does it do with a factory install? Does the card adaptor show up as SD/MMC or just removable storage? -
I don't seem to have this mysterious "SD / MMC (E
" on my SZ150 and I performed a clean installation. I normally have all card slots disabled in the device manager but even when they are enabled the ghost drive doesn't appear.
When I took the attached screenshot only the empty card adapter or "Sony USB HS-CARD USB Device" (Removable Disk Fand a Sandisk memory stick pro duo (H
were inserted in their respective slots. Note that G: refers to the Daemon Tools virtual drive as I have the DVD drive disabled.
The "Removable Disk" icon has always appeared that way, so I'm not sure what the problem is. Does yours look different than mine?Attached Files:

That drive is somehow related to the webcam. Does your model have the cam?
-
Private-Cowboy Notebook Consultant
Well, we found out so far that this drive is conneted to the same controller as the cam. Maybe its a part of the cam detected incorrecty. The system works flawless though even with that drive.

I just received my Vaio SZ-220 today. I went about reformatting everything and performing the clean install.
First time around, I reformatted the hdd and deleted all the partitions. After I installed XP Pro, it dual-booted with Windows XP Home as an option... So I decided to reformat again. This time it worked fine and it seems that the hdd is clear.
Now, I went down the list installing all the drivers exactly as indicated. However, my problem arises with the Infineon Trusted Platform Module. When I install it, I get an error saying, "Trusted Platform Module could not be found." As a result, the driver does not install.
Does anyone have any idea why this has happened? I tried re-downloading the driver from the esupport.sony site but to no avail.
I'd greatly appreciate any help offered to resolve this problem.
