You will need to enable TPM in the bios, which can be accessed by pressing F2 while the VAIO logo appears when you turn on the laptop. Note that this software isn't required unless you actually have a need for TPM.

By the way, when do we need TPM, so it can be installed in case necessary? Thanks

Read this and this to get a better understanding of what TPM and trusted computing are all about.

Thanks a lot, Bogart, for your help!

Now, I'm almost home, except I've run into a problem with the VAIO Power Management Utility. Whenever I run the Setup, I get an error message saying,

"VAIO Event Service could not be closed. Close this program manually and then set it up again."

I am also unable to install the VAIO HDD Protection Utility. When I run the Setup, I get two errors,

"String ERROR_MSG_VES_EXEFILE_LOCKED was not found in string table."

    "ERROR_MSG_VES_EXEFILE_LOCKED."

    So many problems. Sigh.

    Any thoughts?

Again, any help offered would be greatly appreciated.

Go to services (start->run->services.msc) and temporarily turn off the Vaio Event Service (VES) then install those programs.

    Thanks a lot, Bogart.

Finally, my computer is clean and fully functional.

That was too much work. Sony could have included a program that would load all those things automatically...

    Done.|

SZ240P here - what's the easiest way to see if the HDD protection thingy is working? I'm not sure if it's supposed to pop something up or leave an icon or what. Clean install, things seem to be working, except the HDD protection.

Just start the HD protection Program and tap on the keyboard. You should see the levels change if it is working.

Aha, there lies the problem. I don't see anywhere to turn it on. I will venture a guess - it didn't load correctly.

The mysterious SD/MMC drive is not connected to the Camera in anyway. It is the Flashmedia (Memory Stick) driver which is incorrect.

Before installing open up the driver inf for the FlashMedia drive (TI21SONY.INF on this model) and look for the line:

    ;HKLM,System\CurrentControlSet\Services\ti21sony\Parameters,MSSlotOnly, 0x10001,0

remove the comment and change the value to 1 so it looks like this:

    HKLM,System\CurrentControlSet\Services\ti21sony\Parameters,MSSlotOnly, 0x10001,1

If the driver is already installed then change the inf file and then reinstalling the driver will remove the SD/MMC drive

    First, GREAT writeup...

Where in the BIOS would it be? I just got my SZ220 (US) Reloaded, and according the the specs from SOny, it doesn't have a TPM, but I read something that said the TPM is tied to the fingerprint module. Is this the case? How do I determine for sure if I do or do not have the TPM?

It's under the security section in the bios for supported models, but, as you mentioned, your SZ220 does not have a TPM ( specifications).

The TPM is not required for the fingerprint device or its software, protector suite QL, to work properly so you don't need to worry about it.

I'm having the same problem on my SZ220. Absolutely everything seems to work, except Windows just does not actually see the hardware. When installing the Toshiba bluetooth stack, it seems to detect a lot of bluetooth-related hardware like a bluetooth HID interface (main one I need for my bluetooth mouse), but once the installer is done and I check Device Manager, none of them show up and there is no Bluetooth Devices icon in Control Panel, and SmartWi is missing some buttons on the bluetooth page.

Well I found a solution that works for me and hopefully for everyone else. I pulled down the latest Bluetooth Stack directly from the Toshiba website and it solved everything.

This link should hopefully take you straight to the file I used.
    http://www.csd.toshiba.com/cgi-bin/tais/su/su_sc_dtlViewDL.jsp?soid=1474508&moid=null&BV_SessionID=@@@@0526262809.1157259511@@@@&BV_EngineID=ccccaddikdkdemecgfkceghdgngdgnj.0&ct=DL

If that doesn't work, just look in their PC Support site and look at the full drivers list for all models. You can then filter out just the results for Bluetooth, and the latest version is the first one in the list.

    Hey,

I've got a VGN-FS395VP and just installed XP clean on it, not knowing it would be this amount of trouble... I got most of the stuff I needed, but still there are some things that's missing, FN button won't work and so on, could you upload the stuff to rapidshare again, all files are gone now... :/

I just registered so I could say thanks for the hotfixes.

I have been racking my brain trying to sort out the Memory Stick Icon problem after upgrading my Vaio to XP Pro, thankfully I stumbled across this post and I have my Icon back.

    Thanks !!!! :)

(I posted the following to the wrong thread earlier today ... sorry for the dup)

I've just gone through an XP Pro clean install on a new SZ360. Most things are working, but a couple are not, probably all from the same root cause:

Device manager shows 5 working USB host controllers at different addresses, followed by five non-working USB Root Hubs. As expected the USB ports are not working, though they did before the various drivers and apps were installed.

I'd be very grateful if someone can suggest a next step.

I guess I have the same problem as Fundas does. I am with sz330P. Clean XP was installed. Looks like everything is OK, but usb ports don't work properly. Trying to insert usb flash drive or whatever windows is looking for driver and finally can't find the devise either set it. There is a very strange thing tho'. There is some kind of disk called sony usb HS card. Looks like each new usb device is defined as this HS card. Of course windows cannot find any driver again and again. I did everything, but nothing. Anybody could help me? Google and other forums don't help.

    Hello

    excellent thread!

Can somebody who has done a clean install and has all the drivers tell us how much memory the system uses (commit charge in task manager)? Actually a screenshot to see what processes are running would be most useful!

    Thanks

I have 1 yellow mark on Device Manager - Unknown USB device. I really do not know what this is. However, there is no icon in the Removalbe Storge of Memory Stick. For that reason, I guess lack of driver of Memory Stick.

Could u upload the drivers again ? Thnks

My SZ (270): 1 yellow mark! on Device Manager/ "PCMCIA Adapters" (NOT the "PCMCIA and Flash memory devices"). I think there is missing driver for that.

PLEASE help to resolve this problem

I'm also in need of the drivers for a Sony Vaio sz420nb as well. This is crazy that we all have to resort to such gorilla warfare tactics to fix a machine that you spend 2G on.
