I love my FW and two SZ's. So, I got a new Vaio E series from Newegg today. I love the display, keyboard and Windows 7.

But it constantly makes high-pitched noise. It's not loud but I hear it. It looks like it's coming from the hard disk.

I have never dealt with Sony Vaio support before. What are my options?

BTW, is there a disassembly guide for the E series? If Sony doesn't help me, I might swap the HDD with a SSD.

Upon close inspection, I've found that the noise source is right at the center of the notebook. What's in there?

Get used to it. It should be the sound from the CPU and it's normal.

What? Does the CPU make that kind of high-pitched sound? I don't hear it from my FW & SZ.

It's an Intel processor issue, caused when it switches down into a power saving state. ie when it's idle - you should notice the sound stops with you load the CPU up.

in my case, I called SONY to replace the mainboard w/ soldered cpu. They sent a tech and replaced a fan assembly. I called them up again to see if the tech guy can replace mainboard as the issue still exists. I talked to tier 2 tech support to have them sent me a MOBO but they said that there is a chance that i will not be getting that replaced without going thru the DEPOT repair. However, he said that he will try it to order it for me.

I will see how the new MOBO+CPU will behave b/c current VPCZ114GX is experiencing the high-pitched noise.

Because your other laptops don't have the same CPU.

    Solution for high pitched noise:

    1. We have to change the registry.
Typing in the command line "regedit", you go to the registry key:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SYSTEM \ CurrentControlSet \ Control \ Power \ PowerSettings \ 54533251-82be-4824-96c1-47b60b740d00 \ 5d76a2ca-e8c0-402f-a133-2158492d58ad

    2. Included option in this branch will enable and disable the idle processor. In this case, it should be included.
To enable one or another hidden parameter, it is necessary to find and edit the value DWORD, changing its value SettingValue from 1 to 0.

    3. Then, through the control panel - power - in the settings mode select power management processor.
There will be an option disabling idle processor and high pitched noise immediately disappears.

I had the SAME EXACT problem, I even opened my brand new Vaio E, & traced the high pitched random noise from center as you said, not the HDD, or the FAN.
before opening the laptop, I thought the sound is coming from the FAN, but it is not. BTW, When I started in Safe Mode, the noise goes away.

I FINALLY Came to a FIX! FINALLY, I was playing around in the BIOS, & I just disabled the 'CPU C3 C6 Support' and Voila the random high pitched sound is Gone!!!

Then I searced on this Feature, I came across this page:

    [Solved] P55A-UD3R - Random beeping associated with C3/C6/C7 - Gigabyte - Motherboards-Memory

    Hope this helps :)

I have a Vaio VGN-Z (which has the Centrino 2 Duo CPU). From what I understand, the high-pitched sound issue is common on the i series CPUs.

Well... My VGN-Z has a similar issue to what the OP has described.
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/sony/512958-cpu-whining-sound-c2d-machine-3.html#post6681203

I have a recording of the 'sound' on that post.
It only occurs when the fan is stopped, and the sound is there for a few seconds before the fan automatically speeds up to manage the internal temperatures. When the fan is changing speeds WHILE it is spinning (to go faster or to slow down), no sound occurs. Which leads me to believe something is wrong with my fan, though that raises questions as to why no sound occurs when it's already moving...

Plus, my S2 button is set to toggle between the 3x available fan speeds (SILENT, BALANCED, PERFORMANCE); the high-pitched sound doesn't occur when I decide to get the fan moving from a stopped state to the PERFORMANCE speed (ie, no sound when the fan is forced, only when 'automatic')

Can the OP confirm as to what the sound on the E series (or anyone else's i series CPU laptop) is making? Cause my Z makes it once everything 5-10 minutes with the fan stopping most of the time with the Intel graphics (and speeding up when I do various tasks)...
