I have a news flash folks! Dunkinn on vmware.com has also compiled a list of registers. See my masterlist for more info about it and a link to it! He draws on and credits our list here and some other sources too.

Why don't u update to version R0096N0 which is compatible with all of those models including yours (from sony website):

    VGN-SZ3VP/X
    VGN-SZ3XP/C
    VGN-SZ3HP/B
    VGN-SZ3XRP/C
    VGN-SZ3HRP/B
    VGN-SZ3XWP/C
    VGN-SZ3HTP/B
    VGN-SZ3VWP/X
    VGN-SZ3XTP/C

VGN-SZ3XP with BIOS version R0096N0 is on the list so after updating ur BIOS to this version you have to change reg 0399

Hi, I have a Sony Vaio VGN-C2S/L and have tried changing the reg 0318 on bios R0080J4 but it failed to change anything.

So I found and downloaded a modified bios R0104J4 and SecurAble tells me:
    Max Bit Length - 64
    Hardware D.E.P - Yes
    Hardware Virtualization - Locked OFF

Can anyone help of point me in the right direction to change the Locked OFF to a Locked On of tell which reg entry I need to change?

    Thanks in advanced
    :)

    Yup. SZ71's

I have to say though - W7 XP mode is not running as fluidly as I could expect for a machine of this class. I've never really looked into these things but are there differences in VT implementations / effectiveness?

Thanks mschumacher69 just checked and went through all the instructions on p1 but still can't get it to work.

I know what the problem is but not sure how to fix it? ...I re-run symcmos -v2 -ltext.txt again and just checked the file and it's gone back to 0000 instead of 0001. It seems to lose the new settings that get applied when I restart?

Did you try that command immediately after you updated the BIOS, but BEFORE you rebooted? Was the register shown as changed there? Did you see any sort of a checksum error when you rebooted? Some BIOS will reset to factory settings if there is a checksum error.

    Hi

I have tried various ways however, it only seems to keep the 0001 setting until I boot from the Hard Drive and then for whatever reason it losses the 0001 reg modification.

Everything seems to be fine and they are no errors, as far as I am aware.

This is the text file from Symcmos but with the 0318 changed to 0001...

    Code:
    ( SYMBOLIC CMOS EDITOR - Version 643710-035 )
    ( BIOS Version: NAPA0001.86C.0056.D.0612191841 )

    CRC = 09B0

This really makes no sense, as the very first message in this thread was about the very BIOS Version that you have and we know it worked fine for him. Not sure waht to suggest. When you first bootup after the change, do you see any sort of error? Try it again and IMMEDIATLEY go into the BIOS with the F2 key on the first reboot. See if there is any checksum error.

For the record, the current UK Sony Z Series laptops (Z51WG and Z51XG) have VT enabled. That said, why the f"ck anyone would want to run XP in a virtual session, I have no idea. It a a pile of poo. You'd be better off with a dual boot laptop, and I'm sure everyone's figured that out already. This thread seems to be redundant.

You could not be any more incorrect. Dual booting means that if I need to run something under XP I have to shut down Win7 and boot up XP. Then when I need to run something under Win7 I have to do the reverse. I have some development tools that must run under XP. With a virtual machine I can be working on development and running apps under Win7 at the same time. Properly configured the virtual machine has all the speed and resources needed to run things VERY well. Dual boot is a HUGE waste of time and a HUGE limitation on what apps can be running simultaneously. Have you actually tried using a virtal XP machine? Was it configured with the add ons, required for full interface with the host OS?

Can't be done. Since I didn't write the first message, I can't edit the first message. And since I am the one maintianing the list I need to be able to edit the message. That's why there is a LINK in the first message to the list.
I had to get a forum moderator to add that link to the message.

    sony vaio vgn-tz11mn - bios R0071N7

problem: kingspec KSD-ZF18.1-128MJ ssd is slow
only 27mbyte/sec but should be able todo ~60mb/sec

solution: force udma mode with windows-hdparm:
    hdparm -X udma6 /dev/hda

    now runs with 60-65mb/sec :)

    also found:
    vt enable:
    reg 0363 0001 (works)
    sata-controller enable:
    reg 0666 0001
    ahci enable:
    reg 0159 0001

but as written by someone else,
sata is the controller for the 2nd disk, which can be installed in place
    of the optical drive
main drive will always be "ide" (even it is reported as sata-drive, but physical it is a ide drive).

Everything you need to know is contained in the first message of this thread. There are links in that message to the various things you might need. And a link to my master list of model, BIOS and register numbers.

Read through that first message. Make SURE you understand what needs to be done. The only step that has any "danger" is the last one where you write the modified file back to the BIOS. So feel free to do all the steps up to that point without any concern what so ever. As you do those steps, post questions as needed. Then once you get to the point of being ready to do that last step, you will be confident in knowing and UNDERSTANDING what you are doing and that even that last step will be perfectly safe.

While your specific model is not shown in the list, the BIOS version is... along with very similar models to yours which have the exact same BIOS. There is a very good chance that using those as a guide will do just fine.

Remember though, you proceed at your own risk. No one here can be responsible for what happens.

Having said that, I am pretty sure the register associated with your BIOS version in the list will work for you. There is not a unique pairing of BIOS and model numbers. Any machine with the same BIOS number as yours has EXACTLY the same BIOS you do.

    Guys need your help please!

I have Sony Vaio AR21S with R200J6 BIOS. I have tried to create bootable flash. No luck. Used 3 different USB sticks, different programs and none of them worked. Some would be completely blank, some would seem like having the file system on it but would not boot. So I end up creating BOOTable CD on which I put pedit and SYMCMOS.
(downloaded blader10 and burned with NERO)

after running SYMCMOS –v2 –l***.TXT i have a message "Error writing to drive A: DOS area: write protection violation attempted

I think I know the reason but what will be the way around it? My HDD obviously is not visible as BOOT CD didnt have any drivers for it (I also would not know how to add them)? I also suspect : "(add modified table file to image before writing)" from the first post has got smth to do with it but I dont know what the author ment by that.

    Any ideas?
    Thanx

You cannot do this from a bootable CD. The first step in the process is to use SYMCMOS to write a copy of the BIOS registers to a file. (That's what failed with the "error writing..."). You then have to modify that file. Both of these steps require writable media. Therefore it MUST be done from a bootable external hard drive, a bootable memory stick or a bootable diskette.

Then I suggest CD should be not mentioned in the original instructions.

As for the using Nero Boot CD for some mysterious reasons I cannot see FLASH but can see my drive C (all but without a windows folder) but still can not write to it. running SYNCMOS from C gives message " can not create literal report file ".

    Any other suggestions?

The only suggestion I have at this point is you'll need to figure out why you can't create a bootable memory stick. Other users with similar models have gotten it to work. So I don't think its an issue with your particular Vaio model. It seems odd that you can't see the flash drive after booting from the CD. That seems to indicate that the BIOS itself is not seeing the flash drive, which is also likely why you can't boot from a flash drive. Not knowing the particulars of your BIOS, I think you might want to check the BIOS settings and make sure BIOS support of USB is on and that the boot sequence includes the USB drive.

Dont know why. Used 3 sticks, 3 computers, 2 programs.

Anyway, all I can say is BINGO!!

What finally worked for me was: Bootable CD from Nero + MMC card (from my TomTom) through USB reader formated in FAT32 with symcoms on it put into USB at the BACK of the computer (not side ones).

    Thanks a lot to evryone

    Sometime something very strange happens.
The problem reported by rabo4ii happened also to my friend actually. I really don't understand why, but doing the same procedure (creating a boot cd from Nero and inserting the USB pen drive), that worked for me, but not for my friend.
Actually, while I was able to see my pen drive, he couldn't and reported the exact problem mentioned by rabo4ii. No pen drive detected, only the C drive (and other partitions).
At this point, I can say it could happens due to the pen drive brand, or something else, related to the used pen drive.

On the other hand, instead, we weren't able to make a FreeDOS USB bootable pen drive, despite that we followed all mentioned guides, step by step. But this is another issue, of course. It's just to report the difficulties encountered during this adventure.

The question is: why some PCs are able to see the pen drive, and other don't?

I was able to unlock VT-x support on the following model:

    VGN-FE11H, BIOS: R0174J3, reg: 0195

This model is basically identical to the VGN-FE590, which was sold on the U.S. market only, so there are good chances it will work with that one as well (probably with all VGN-FEx90 models).

Does anyone know the appropriate address for turning on AHCI on Sony Vaio laptops whose VT-x can be unlocked at 0195? I'd guess that they all share the same value regarding AHCI.

Note: You can enable VT using a boot CD. All you need is a FreeDOS base CD image, a software which can modify ISO files (such as WinISO) and the SYMCMOS.EXE utility.

Install WinISO, download the FreeDOS base ISO file and load it into WinISO (the shareware version only supports changing files smaller than 100 MB, but the base ISO file is 8 MB small). Navigate to the FREEDOS\3RDPARTY directory. Place the SYMCMOS.EXE there (just drag it into the window) and save the ISO file. Burn it (e.g. using CdBurnerXP).

Boot from the CD. Hit return at the first screen. On the next screen, select the second option (you don't want to install FreeDOS, you just want to run the command line interpreter). Now, navigate to the FREEDOS\3RDPARTY directory. Type "copy symcmos.exe a:". A: is a small RAM drive generated by FreeDOS at startup (which is actually big enough for our purposes). CD to A:\, then run the SYMCMOS.EXE util as you normally would ("symcmos -v2 -lDefault.txt"). Type "edit default.txt" and change the key you would like to change. (You don't need a separate DOS text editor as there is one included in the FreeDOS base CD image.) Save the file. Then type "symcmos -v2 -uDefault.txt" to reprogram the NVRAM.

Did this with my SZ2 HP/B

First it was a bit of a hassle to update the BIOS the one linked in the first post wouldn't install. Then I downloaded the BIOS update for the SZ4 ->works.

Then I booted DOS and edited the values (just for AHCI) and rebooted my windows 7 32Bit. Before that I manually activatet the AHCI driver in the registry (like in post 1) and the driver was installed properly on the first boot.

I did all of this because my intes SSD just gave me half the speed I expected (~120MB/s) and I was hoping to improve that.
Well it didn't quite work that well... min is maybe a few mb/s more but the average and the burst rate did't improve, but apparently the CPU usage reduced by 50% to 6% total. At leas the standard Win7 driver supports TRIM...

if anyone has suggestions how to increase the speed of my old Intel ich7 chipset... all help welcome.

    Hi everybody,

    I got a vaio VGN-C2Z/B BIOS Version R0080J4.....
Checked the Masterlist for maching BIOS, Found one (0318), but didn't work on my machine, after reboot still locked off. Reboot again, readout with symcmos, the value is still set "1".........but no VT support.......

    any idea?

I would also be quiet interested in the AHCI mode, cause a couple of weeks ago i plugged a x25-m into the machine, and my experiences on different other machines with ssdHD and AHCI enabled are good, so i'd like to give this older vaio a try.........

    all suggestions welcome

How are you testing that it is or is not turned on. If the bit is staying set you SHOULD be good to go.

    Hi Gary,

did the whole procedure like told, everthing ran sweet, tested it with securable after the reboot, still "locked off".....rebooted, read the data out again, still set to "1".....so i guess the wrong key or i'm doing something wrong......

Any idea about the AHCI? I think i'll try some keys from "0" to "1", but is there maybe an "area" where it could be located?

    Roomanus,

I have no idea where either key might be. Sorry. All I have been doing is compiling the master list from reports given here of folks success with the process.
