I have uploaded the SZ6XX modified for VT bios at the link below. Just run the install.bat to simplify the command line entries (edit if you want to look at the commands to give yourself comfort that there isn't anything nefarious). It is R0122S5.

I have successfully installed the msft virtual PC for 7 with this:

    http://rapidshare.com/files/227784780/sony_szxxx_R0122S5_BIOS_for_VT_.zip

Just make sure to let the flash completely finish (it takes a few seconds to get going), and reboot your laptop when the cmd screen disappears.

You can run this update from XP, Vista, or Windows 7.

I have VAIO SZ 760N, I went thru the whole process but when I start Virtual XP it says Hardware Virtualization not enabled in BIOS. I went back and checked the BIOS and no signs of virtualization option.

Please let me know if your batch files need to be updated for my model. Yes, I am running R0122S5 version and Windows 7 RC.

You can actually help yourself! Look back just two messages prior to yours and you will see reports of success with the EXACT same BIOS you have. Then read back thru the rest of the thread and you will find that there are detailed instructions to accomplish what you want.

    Is it REALLY that hard?

I'll tell you what my first boss told me 40 years ago, "If you come in here and ask me how to do something, and I won't even know you are in the room. If you come in here after having done some research and ask if this is the right way to do something and I'll help you all you need." Enough said.

No. It's all here, if you will just look for it. I gave you a link on how to create a bootable drive. What else do you expect? Do you want me to drive to your house and hold your hand while you do it? Go back and read my previous reply to you. If you come back after having done some of your own research using the links provided and the contents of this thread. I, and others here, will be glad to help you out. I can only speak for myself, but if you want us to do EVERYTHING for you, I "won't even know you are in the room".

Dear friend be cool ok. I read all pages and search on google, but i still don´t know how the correct way to enable the VT.

I sincerely hope that one day you do not need help and it appears someone like you that respond that way.

I read all 16 pages but still many doubts/questions and is an operation at risk, I have fear of damaging the computer.

I´m an started in a computer and I don´t have the knowledge you have.

Thanks anyway for the help ...

Then ASK THE QUESTIONS and TALK about the doubts! That's the point I am trying to get across to you. If I just create a script for you, you learn nothing except how to follow the script. If instead, you pull together what you have found and post your specific questions, concerns and doubts you learn, other folks benefit from your questions and the answers folks post to them.

When my boss made that statement to me 40 years ago I had zero experience. But he threw me into the deep end of the pool. I did the research, I came back to him with my notes and questions, he answered them. In the process I learned not only the answers to those questions but how to do the research and teach myself.

I am not trying to be a jerk, although it might seem to you that I am. I am a former teacher of computers. This is the way I taught everyone I have had a chance too.

I will try to help answer your questions. I will not create a script.

I quit. I do not know almost nothing about computers and I only have interested the VT to work for my PC, so do not intend to apply in other computers.

I appreciate greatly if you could make a script to someone who understands nothing of the matter.

So, your're a computer beginner and you already need virtualization??? Do you really need VT-x? Do you know what it really is? Do you really know what you need?

99% of people starting on computers don't know that virtualization exists!!
If you talk about "a virtualized OS" to a n00b, she will say: "What??? "
I guess a beginner would be satisfied even though VT-x is not enabled.

As ScuderiaConchiglia said, all instructions are in this thread. You only have to read and apply what you learnt here and/or elsewhere.

If you have any specific question, feel free to ask here, and we will glad to help you. But don't expect to be driven step by step, since a lot of guides answering your questions are present in the Internet.

    Bye.

All of his answers are right here in this very thread. Yet he expects someone else to do all the work. There is a script in this thread for making the BIOS change. I posted a link to scripts on creating a bootable USB memory stick.

I don't get it. What else could he have wanted?

Thanks for supporting my position on this.

Drop back one page (page 16) and scroll down to message #154. It contains a list of the BIOS versions that have been updated so far. I don't see yours on the list though.

The SZ7XX I believe has a different register to change; the virtualization option won't ever show up in bios as a setting; all patches noted in this thread make the fix directly to the BIOS rather than doing it through the missing setting.

As I don't have a SZ7 series, I can't really create a patched BIOS and know that it works - but in the 17 pages or so, there must be a reference. The first page tutorial is how I did it, but thought...hey...why have everyone patch if a library could be started.

I need this for Windows 7 (build 7100) to run Virtual PC. I have a CR520D (590 drivers work on it...). I noticed the chart of BIOS versions has no CRs, but the CR is Socket P so it should be Santa Rosa.

    ...

From what I've read, I will need to make a bootable DOS USB.
Then I copy a DOS program to the DOS USB and then run a command, and get a text file from the BIOS.
I modify that text file and then throw it back at the BIOS and I'm done.

    Is that it?

I don't have Nero (nor do I want to get it), so I'll just follow the instructions from the first post.

Also, how can I get the VAIO CR included in that chart?

For some reason, when I select USB Flash (or USB HDD), it won't boot from the DOS USB.

I made the DOS USB from the link in the first post and I enabled network and external boot from the BIOS.

I got it to boot to the DOS USB and I typed in symcmos -v2-lDefault.txt (removed the second space) and pressed enter.

Nothing happened so I though it worked. I exited and plugged in the USB to another computer and there is no text file there.

    Conmee

I tried ricksterto's patch [page 16] and I was still getting "Hardware Virtualization not enabled" for Virtual PC beta for XP mode on Windows 7 RC.

With the symcmos method, my machine went looping into startup recovery and 'windows is starting up' screen and never actually booting to Windows 7(not even in safe mode). So I restored the settings back to make it work.

I think there is a different register that needs to be patched and I can't find which one.

Anybody had luck unlocking vt-x on VGN SZ 760N? Let me know if you would like to take a look at the registers' values.

Nor should you expect it to. The patch ONLY affects the internal switch, it has nothing to do with the BIOS menu at all. You need to use one of the third party tools mentioned elsewhere to verify if the switch is set.

Before I contemplate the divide and conquer technique for discovering the correct byte.

Does anybody know the correct byte for bios R2080J8 to enable VT?

Its in a VAIO VGN-AR61ZU by the way.

I must confess to being put off by the consequence of disassembling my laptop if the BIOS is screwed.

    Great thread, great sharing people.

    Guys,

I am having hard time enabling VT-x. Can anyone post success for SZ-760N?

See two posts above, I tried both the method and still no avail. Do I have to reformat the OS? No, I don't think so!!

Is there a tool where I can export the BIOS and play around to see any particular register works or enables virtualization. I am ready to take chances and sacrifice my laptop to get this done. Please include a tip, if you know any for disaster recovery. :)

    Thanks.

Having a strange problem. Running the R0092N0 BIOS on a VGN-SZ220. Apparently, the register to change to enable VT is (0399).

I save the report with symcmos, open it up to edit and find not only is that line missing, but every few lines the data is displaying improperly. Not only that, near the bottom, there are several instances of directory paths to pieces of old torrent files in the output. I've tried rebooting several times, as well as cold boots after disconnecting the power cord. Every copy produces the same results. Even tried booting into Windows to view in Notepad, but got the same thing.

    Any ideas?

    SUCCESS!! :D

    I have a Sony VAIO VGN-AR71M.
After downloading the FreeDOS CD iso I added symcmos & PEDIT into the iso file (using MagicISO). Created the CD (Nero burning ROM) and went for it...
Next I booted my laptop via the FreeDOS CD (selected the option to install HDD drivers and boot FreeDOS from CD)

Using the manual of BOGART (see first post) I created the Default.txt and changed the VT setting as described. Shutdown my laptop, powered on the laptop and started hoping like crazy...
    It worked!!! VT is enabled

    Some information:
    Phoenix BIOS version - R2090J8
    BIOS value: (0285) [0000] ---> (0285) [0001]

    THNX very very much Bogart!!

    BOGART RULES :p

Oh well, Gave up on this BIOS. Upgraded to R0112N0. Tried exporting again and got the same corrupt output, but at least the (0354) register was in there. Changed it, sent it over to the NVRAM and did something awful since it wouldn't boot afterward.

Opened up the thing and unplugged the CMOS battery. Tried again with the default.txt in the OP and modified that. Worked like a charm and now fooling around with XP Mode in Windows 7.

    Big thanks bogart!

Help me please! Sorry for my English.
I have VAIO VGN-AR61ZRU and bios R2080J8. I change BIOS value: (0285) [0000] ---> (0285) [0001] in default.txt and save the modified file to modified.txt. When I type "symcmos -v2 -uNameOfModifiedFile" without quotes this not write the modified settings to the NVRAM, symcmos has told me - failed write NameOfModifiedFile.
    Thanks!

    Thanks BOGART and GARY!
    I have VAIO VGN-AR61ZRU and bios R2080J8. I change BIOS value: (0285) [0000] ---> (0285) [0001] and VT works nice!
But in system information - System Model-5, should be-VGN-AR61ZRU and
in VAIO Control Center System Model-5 too. Any ideas.
    Thanks.

Unless there has been an update to your BIOS there is no place where you can download it. Sony is the ONLY place where you will find one. But they never publish the originals only updated versions.

    model: VGN-FZ490N
