I have a Sony VGN-AR71ZU which has a Intel Core 2 Duo T9300 but Sony disable hardware virtualisation. The Intel processor identification utility shows Intel Virtualization is available in the processor but the Bios does not include an option to turn it on. There are several sites that offer hacked Bios code to re-enable Intel Virtualization but i'm not sure I'm happy to use these. This Sony site indicates they do not allow hardware virtualization http://www.kb.sony.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?cmd=displayKC&docType=kc&externalId=C381809 . What! Why not? That's why I bought a dual core laptop!

I can no longer use Micrsoft Virtual PC 2007 as it does not run on Win 7 nor can I use Windows Virtual PC so I am stuck! Does anyone know of a solution?

    Just a quick question:

So nothing can happen if the "modification" failes ?
Just need to remove the CMOS Battery for a while, put it back and everything is ok?

Or is it possible to kill my BIOS (e.g. when doing a BIOS update).

    Thanks

Thank you all. After reading many, many posts in this thread I enabled VT in the Vaio VGN-FZ340E.
The BIOS Version is R2110J7 and the reg is 02D0.
Now, does anyone know the reg for AHCI in this Vaio Model/BIOS?

    Thanks in advance.

    Hi there,
I have a Sony Vaio vgn ar890u, BIOS Phoenix R2090J8.
By changing the value 0285 from 0000 to 0001 I managed to activate hardware virtualization (HV).
I have just discovered that with this modification in the BIOS, the built-in camera (motion eye) is no longer recognized and cannot be used in either Vista Ultimate SP2 or Windows 7 32 bit. The camera is not seen by the system.
I came back to the original BIOS with HV off and the camera now is recognized and works.
Maybe this is why Sony did not turn hardware virtualization on?

have you enabled the VT yourself? If not this thread is about the lack of VT support from Sony and ways around it?

    Hi
How can I enable virtualization on my laptop?
my laptop model is VGN-CS36GJ and can support virtualization technology.
in BIOS setting I just can set a password for my laptop and another option is for changing boot and no other option.
    Thanks.

With hardware virtualization the internal web cam does not work as I said in my previous post, but also my Sony DVD camcorder (DCR-DVD-403) cannot be recognized on the USB port either in Vista 32 or on Windows 7 32bit.
By reverting to the default Bios setting (with NO hardware virtualization) both cameras are recognized and work fine on both Vista and Windows 7.

I am having a bit of difficulty finding the right registers for my Vaio. It is a VGN-AR630E and I made it through the steps of getting the register dump but need a little help finding the right registers to modify. I am trying to enable VT and AHCI but I would settle for just VT. Please help if you can or provide some advice on how you guys found the right registers. Do I just go through them one by one rebooting each time to see if VT is enabled? How can I tell if VT is enabled unless I fire up an app that uses it and test it?

I tried 027F too thinking since mine is an AR series they should be somewhat similar and it worked! I now have full VT support!

Now has anyone found the register to enable AHCI on the AR series? I want to enable AHCI so I can run my two hard drives in raid. I have a VGN-AR630E and it has two internal hard drives. If I find the right register and enable AHCI do you think I will be able to run a raid setup with the two internal drives?

    VGN-AR630E
    027F is VT

Yeah it seems like the FZ series in general got ignored. There are many of us with this laptop brand, some of which are only a couple years old but I HIGHLY doubt that Sony will be releasing an official BIOS upgrade for us so this is are only choice. FZs run on the Santa Rosa platform (at least from what I've seen) and if anyone wants a BIOS listing let me know.

Please ignore the auto-text the board entered when I mention "FZ".

So do you think it could work also on FZ31l? Does all FZ models have the same BIOS and REGISTER? If yes I would be very great full if you should share with us how did you enable VT.
    Thank you in advance.

Well I took a gamble with the list of VGN-FZ's that has the same BIOS and Register as me on page 16 and it seems to have worked. The instructions are on page 1.

As long as you have the same version numbered BIOS it should work just fine.

It has been a while since anyone updated the "master table" so I thought I'd tackle it. Below is a summary of all the posts stating that the poster has successfully enabled VT on their VAIO. The model numbers below are NOT in sequence. Locate your model and VERIFY THAT YOU HAVE THE SAME BIOS VERSION. (That point is VERY important.)

Disclaimer: I take no responsibility to the accuracy of the data below. In fact, before you start, I highly recommend you search this thread for your model and BIOS version to be sure I transcribed the data correctly. Use it at your own risk. I repeat, I take no, zero, nada, zilch responsibility for this data nor what happens to your machine if you attempt to unlock VT. Also I will not entertain questions on the procedure. Everything you need to know to do this is outlined clearly in this thread. I would appreciate hearing from anyone who notices an error in my transcription of the data or new model/BIOS info to add. In the words of the old Hill Street Blues desk Sargent: Be careful out there!

[08/24/09 - Note: I rearranged the order of the list, to group machines with the same register together.]
[08/31/09 - Note: Added a section for Desktop Models too.]
[09/10/09 - Reorganized the list adding model groups and organized by BIOS version within model groups.]
[12/4/09 - I just found a list composed by Dunkinn over on vmware.com: Another list. He draws upon the list here (and credits that fact) as well as some other sources he has found. So if you don't find your model here try his list as well. You will need to manually scroll down to message #85.]

Sorry ScuderiaConchiglia I made a mistake (typo), I used 02CD and not 02D0.

    Model: FZ21E
    BIOS: R1120J7

Then you must not have BIOS: R2110J7, right? I think you must have BIOS:R1120J7 as that is the one which used 02CD. Please verify this ASAP. I will put ??? in the master list until I hear back from you.

    VGN-SZ1M/B R0112N0 VT-x: (0354) [0000] ---> (0354) [0001]

    Also works! Thanks.

Is it possible to replace SLIC 2.0 to SLIC 2.1 in the BIOS? Or Sony's BIOSes are still unchangeable?

The version of bios is the most important thing, I imagine, but the model numbers make it easier to find this thread in search engines.

I'm never buying a Sony laptop after this. I did send back and forth mail with support... what a chore to figure out. Thanks for doing all the work!

Worked perfectly. Big thanks to "Rail Grinder" and the rest of you for the great advice. Used these instructions to make USB boot stick.

Just a note about Microsoft Virtual PC that might save someone some time. I had two virtual PC's saved (not shut down but paused) but didn't realise that virtual PC's enable hardware virtualization by default. So after I'd enabled it on my laptop the virtual machines showed as being corrupt (obviously couldn't cope with being suddenly empowered with extra hardware) and I couldn't change the settings on them until they were shut down. Ended up going through the whole symcmos procedure again to turn VT off then shutting down the virtual PC's then the whole symcmos procedure one last time to turn VT on again. All virtual PC's working fine now with hardware virtualization. :)

Another model and 'VT enable' register that you can add to the master list, Gary. Thanks for taking the time to update it for everyone to reference.

Model: VGN-CR290E (and possibly other CR models besides the 200 series)
    BIOS: Phoenix R1121Q0
Register: 05BB (should be second to the last register on the list generated by symcmos.exe)*

Has been verified with Securable, and was able to install and run XP Mode RC on Windows 7 RC.

*I have to give much thanks and credit to the original poster, Jonildo Santos, as he was the one who first posted it on his own blog (originally in Portuguese):

    http://translate.google.com/translate?hl=en&sl=pt&u=http://jonildosantos.mobile.spaces.live.com/entry.aspx%3Fh%3Dcns%213EF6999787FD9AD7%211144%26fp%3D%252Farc.aspx&ei=W1mESu_MEqbInAPO9pnoBA&sa=X&oi=translate&resnum=10&ct=result&prev=/search%3Fq%3Dvaio%2Br1121q0%2Bvt%26hl%3Den

Also, for those who may have been having trouble creating a USB thumb drive to boot to DOS, I found it extremely easy by downloading WinImage and MS-DOS v7.10b standard boot disk. Open the .img file of MS-DOS7.10b folder in WinImage, choose the drive letter of your thumb drive, and then choose the 'Disk Write' option. All the necessary files should now be in the thumb drive. Just save symcmos.exe to it, as well, and boot away as described in Post #1 by bogart.

    Hope that helps.

I assume you meant a VGN-CR290E. From the article you referenced I also added the CR240 model as well.

I'm running SZ370P here. Updated my BIOS to 112N0 before messing up with it.. and it didn't work! changed 0354 [0000] ==> [0001] and nothing happened, Securable shows Hardware Virtualization is locked out =\ That really sounds like crap coz the feature is very promising. Is there a way to roll back the BIOS to 0096N0?

    EDIT:
Okay, I rolled back to R0096N0. Now I see the weirdest thing: there's no (0399) string there! I'm either blind or smth's wrong with the dump

Here's another confirmed working VT result for the list:

    Model: VGN-CR353
    BIOS: R2101Q0
    Register: 5BB

Incidentally, according to the BIOS code the AHCI flag is at 0x55E, but unfortunately setting it appears to have no effect.

(If you've managed to enable AHCI on this model or BIOS version, I'd really appreciate a PM to hear about it, even if you've come across this post sometime in the future.)

    Cheers

Has anyone tried using something like HWDirect to edit the CMOS settings? From what I can tell, the only difference is that HWdirect separates the CMOS registers into words instead of bytes, meaning you halve the register and check odd or even to decide which side of the byte boundary this is on. I don't really have enough experience with this sort of thing to see if it's a viable option to edit the values directly from windows, so perhaps someone with more experience could add a little insight.

The vt code you are looking for is in the master list. (See the link in my signature line below.)

As for your bootable disk, obivously it is not "bootable". It can't find command.com, which must be on any bootable disk. How did you go about creating the disk?
