I don't think CPU in SZ7 support VT but you can run Windows XP in VmWare for example, if you need this.

    Opps... excuse me then...
Don't think that sony will release VT-enabled BIOS, but who knows.

Dunno. Seems i though that one of the difference is the VT tech.
Did you read the how-to enable vt on a 1st page?

Just enabled VT on my own FZ190, so I added it to the list. And no, this doesn't mean that I will no longer monitor this thread and keep the master list up to date.

Gee, where were you last night when I dug around for a couple of hours trying to create a bootable stick only to come to EXACTLY the same process outlined in the link you provided? :D

Since you have the "power" to edit it, how about modifying the first post in this thread changing this:

    To this:
Leaving the links intact of course. It is not OBVIOUS that those links are pointing to instructions. I mistook them for the automatic links that the forum software often adds to certain key words. And I bet others have fallen into that trap as well.

    Thanks,

    Gary

Your right Gary, the biggest hang up in this process for me was figuring out how to make my thumb drive dos bootable, then copying my BIOS file. Everything is working great now on my FZ-180 E/B.

If you put an editor on the thumb drive then there is no need to even copy the BIOS file. That's what I did. I booted from the thumb drive, ran the app to get my BIOS file, edited the BIOS files, used the app to apply the edited file. I than ran the app again to extract the BIOS file just so I could check to see if the change actually occurred. (All of this was occurring ON the thumb drive.) Then I booted up normally.

I am about to install the new Virtual PC stuff, can't wait to see what this does for the performance of my virtual machines.

Notice the extra carriage return before "USB flash 1".

    thanks a lot Rachel,
this is one of the methods I tried, I also copied the addtl files mentioned for cdrom support - the boot works but seemed stuck on the "Windows 98" picture - I will try again without the extra files

I managed to get it done - (THANKS A TON to all that helped !)
I used the method described here as advised http://www.bay-wolf.com/usbmemstick.htm, except that I did not copy all files as mentioned, just created the bootable usb disk, added editor (pedit.exe in my case), added symcmos.exe

I did the changes and added an extra check before rebooting as advised in the thread (issued an extra symcmos -v2 -lRESULT.txt)

My BIOS revision was not listed so here it is :
    Model SZ71 WN/C R0121S5
(VT register 02F1 - same as for revision R0122S5)

I just got my sz750n with R0122S5 up and running - I have a usb floppy and found that much easier than the thumb drive. I just used windows 7 to make a bootable floppy and aded pedit and symcmos to the disk, rebooted from the disk , made the changes, rebooted again. For others, some of the things that slowed me down:
    1. When you are creating the log file, the flag is the letter L not|
    2. Symcmos would not update my bios in the final step until i typed it without the -v2 command

That's the first such report we have seen here. For others following this thread who have already updated the BIOS please chime in with your experience on dropping this parameter. I know I had it when I updated my BIOS just last week. So for folks about to try the process, keep that parameter in place till we gather further info.

I don't have my copy of SYMCMOS with me, could someone run it with a -? parameter to see if it will dump a "help file" and then post it here?

Could someone please explain how enable VT settings by using a bootable CDR with freeDOS?

I need a step by step, or maybe a video tutorial or something? I've been tinkering with this for a few hours and can't figure it out. :*(
Now my head just hurts from all the reading, and burning, and booting... over and over and over.. Nothing seems to work for me.

Step by step guides are available in links in the very first post in the thread. But you are going to have one problem using a CDR. Once you booted it you are not going to be able to have symcmos writing the register dump for you to edit it.

You are better off doing this on a USB memory stick. It is much easier.

To get a bootable pendrive I used the method described in the USB flash2 -link but ran into a silly problem: The mini-win98-system boots from my usb-device, than hangs for a short moment at the win98-bootscreen and than reboots. The only way to get out of that reboot-cycle is to unplug the usb device.

Maybe you made a mistake creating the bootable usb-drive? That was my first suggestion and I did the procedure again, but had the same problem on my VAIO. So I decided to double-check the pendrive with my old Thinkpad R51 and here the win98-system boots fine. As the BIOS is different, I didn't check symcmos of course, but was able to create a test-textfile with pedit.

Maybe your usb-device has a malfunction or your VAIO can't handle it? No, I was able to boot Moblin and Ubuntu NBR on my VAIO from that usb-device.

Any other suggestions or did anyone else had the same problem?

    Thanks, Jan

Anyone have luck enabling VT on a SZ470N? 0354 set to 0001 enables VT, but leaves me with one core on my core 2 duo CPU. I verified this in Windows 7 and in CPU-Z. If I set the register back to its default value, VT is no longer enabled but I have both my CPU cores back. Any suggestions?

    BIOS version R0112N0

    Thanks guys

SZ360 works with BIOS upgraded to R0096N0 (from R0093N0) and register 399.

Did not try to active VT on the original BIOS.

Are you SURE that the only register you changed was 0354? I cannot imagine how one register would affect both things and I certainly think the other folks who have the same BIOS you have would have reported this by now. Try it again and verify this. If it is as you indicated, I think you are out of luck.

I finally figured it out. The trick is not to format the USB-devices (I probed 3 of them...) with FAT32 but with FAT plus using Windows ME-files (See the attached files).

Thanks!!! By the way, I wasn't "demanding" their removal only asking for it. You yourself had posted a bold warning that folks shouldn't attempt to use them, so I thought it better to not even have the opportunity for someone to accidently use 'em. Thanks for doing it. We can now both be assured someone isn't going to fall into that trap!

I have an SZ430N/B with Bios Ver: R0112N0 and i followed the steps that were outlined in first post and did it successfully.

yet, I don't see a way to enable VT in the bios. Can anyone guide me? How do i get it to show up? I try to run XP mode in Win 7 Pro and it says VT is not enabled.

    Help Please...

are you sure you did it successfully?
Even if you did it successfully, it would just active the VT and you wouldn't see it in the BIOS. Just check where you did it wrong.

It won't show up in the BIOS. The process does nothing except enable the VT bit. If you truly did it successfully then VT is now on. Have you tried the SecurAble to check to see if VT is on?

If it reports that VT is not enabled, then something you did in the process didn't work. Most likely the step where you edit the register in the text file, or the step where you apply the modified file back to the BIOS.

I checked with securable. Says its locked. However, this is what I did next.

    1) made sure 0354 was changed to 0001 on mod.txt
    2) symcmos -v2 -umod.txt
    3) symcmos -v2 -ltest.txt
    4) examined test.txt on a different laptop to verify the change
    5) rebooted the PC and yet securable says its locked :(

for some reason when it boots, defaults are loaded..
