    Hi,

I am new to this forum. I am trying to enable VT on on a Vaio VGN-NS20M_S using Mr. Levicki's patch but unsucessfully. It errors saying that Intel VT is not supported by the CPU. The CPU being Intel Mobile Core 2 Duo T6400 2.00GHz and other details being:

    BIOS: American Trends Inc. R1020Y3
    Boot: Via Flash USB Win98

I ran securable app to check whether CPU supports Hardware Virtualization and it indicated that it was 'Locked Off', which i took as not being enabled.

Can anyone confirm whether in fact this CPU does not support Intel VT, or if I am doing this something wrong.

Any input would be appreciated since Sony support are not very helpful in trying to find a solution and the BIOS has so few settings that can be modified.

Hi all I have been reading these forums for a while but I've finally decided to register because I HAD TO say a big thank you to Mr Levicki and report another positive result with his great VT patch! Not a single error, everything went perfectly! Now I'm finally able to try Windows 7's new XP Mode! :) I have a VGN-FW11E, by the way.
Thanks again Igor this is an amazing work!

The T6400 does not support VT. You're out of luck...

I am posting this because it seems that for some people it is not enough to state that VTPATCH works only with AMI Aptio BIOS — they keep asking me how to make it work on Z series so I have to explicitly state here once again:

VTPATCH doesn't work and it will never work with VAIO Z series of notebooks.

    Now, regarding VT detection:

    1. CrystalCPUID reports only if the feature is present in the CPU, not whether it is currently enabled.

    2. Securable also doesn't report whether feature is enabled or disabled in 64-bit OS due to the lack of a properly signed 64-bit driver.

The proper way of determining whether VT is enabled is to install Virtual Machine software such as Virtual PC 2007 SP1 or newer, VirtualBox, or VMWare and check whether they allow you to select "Use hardware virtualization" option.

If my patch tells you that the VT is not supported on your CPU then you can either upgrade the CPU or give up -- VT support detection in my patch is 100% reliable, there is no need to waste time checking with other tools.

    Hi levicky and everyone,

I have a VAIO SR190E , its bios version is R0300Y1, and I went to sony support website and know it is a latest bios version for my laptop.

My Processor is P8600, VGA is Intel 4500HD (Intel GM45 chipset)

So, can it use the VTPATCH of Levicki to patch this bios to enable VT?
    Now I am using Widows 7 X64 RC .

    Thanks all.

The patch does not turn on anything in the BIOS to allow you to turn on VT. It actually turns on VT. To verify if it has done so, you will need one of the third party tools mentioned in this or the other VT thread which will display the VT state for you.

Hi and sorry for the late reply. I had a tool from HP that I was given for a work project. I'm not sure where it can be found online but I see others may have helped you already.

    Good luck!

So let me make sure I did this right. Did a DOS boot and went to the directory with the patch. typed VTPATCH and hit enter. It processed for a bit, then it asked me about 4 questions just to be sure. I went through all of that. At the end it brought me back to the directory prompt where the patch is. I booted to my BIOS and didnt see anything that had changed, so I went to restore defaults. Then I booted to WIN 7 and tried to start Virtual XP, but it said that Virtualization was not activated. Did hitting restore defaults in the BIOS mess this process up for me, or did I do something else wrong? Thanks in advance for all the help.

Resetting the bios more than likely undid the patch. I can't say for sure. Retry the patch, then use one of the tools mentioned to see if VT is then set.

First let me say a big "thank you" to levicki for his great work.
I've managed to enable VT on my vaio VGN-AW11.
Virtual PC, Virtual Server and even the new (Windows 7) Windows Virtual PC recognizes VT is enabled.
However... when I try to use any virtual machine inside this programs the VMs starts to work slowly and slowly every time.
If I open "only" Task Manager the taskman process after 15min consumes the entire CPU, with no other app running.

I've tried several combinations, using vista and now with windows 7. With existing and with new VMs. They all do the same.

Does anyone found the same problems?
    Thanks
    D

Hello to all and thanx to Levicki!!!.

I have the same issue, that is writen above(only that my vaio model is FW31ZJ, BIOS is the same).
I have done all the work without the problems, also uninstalled virtual pc and i have installed it again, but with no success.

I always get the same error that i have to enable VT in BIOS.

    What now?

    Regards from Slo, Pubi

Hello, just now i am installing virtual pc :))). Levicki THX!!!.

    And the solution is:
You have to run PATCH from USB stick instead od VTPATCH.

    Hehe, little stupid mistake ;)).

    Heheh, LOL :D :D :D

Now, just my humble opinion about SONY VAIO. I'm realy disappointed.

First:because they want me to extra charge for software, which was originaly installed(50pounds). I formated c: before i have made a copy of c:\drivers folder.

Second: because of disabled hardwer virtualization

This is my first Sony notebook, which it has cost me 1500€ and I think that is also my last. Probably going back to Toshiba.

Sony instructs you to make a DVD system recovey set when you first get your machine. If you did so, the drivers are all on that disk.

Yes, that's true, but who told me, that i have to read SONY instructions, when i bought a computer?

My mistake was that i expect VAIO is like other computers(manufacturers! which give you full free support), or even better.

If i had noticed anywhere, i would make a copy. My best practice is that when i buy a new computer, i format it and then install windows with my needs.

And just for curious, why cd cost 50 pounds?

Hmm, let's see you open the box, find there are NO disks included in the box, then without bothering to read any of the documentation that came with the machine or looking to see what drivers are available on the Sony website you proceed to wipe out the OS and then complain when you can't find what you need. Go look in a mirror. Your complaints belong there not with Sony.

Your mistake was, and is, trying to put the blame on someone else. Your problem is of your own making and you want to shift the blame to Sony. They provided you with everything you need, for free. You chose to ignore their instructions and now it's their fault? Anyone who wipes out the operating system BEFORE they find out what they need to re-install it is practicing the age old "Ready. Shoot. Aim." scenario. Don't blame Sony because YOU didn't bother to try to find the drivers and applications you needed BEFORE you wiped out the hard drive.

Seriously though...the practice of included recovery CDs was stopped a long time ago. From experience I know that lenovo, hp, and sony no longer ship recovery cds (unless you get 2 operating systems like vista + XP downgrade). I don't think toshiba does either

Yep, and yet pubi wants to blame Sony because he/she didn't bother to notice that fact, or the instructions Sony CLEARLY provides to create a DVD recovery set, or even try to find out what drivers might be needed before wiping out the existing OS. Yes, that was clearly Sony's fault.

Now that I'm less euphoric :) and even starting to like my Sony VAIO VGN-FW170J, the steps that we did as our friend Igor Levicki taught us:

1- I used Win98 DOS (safe¹) boot from Flash Drive. ¹-no memory managers

    http://www.dashken.net/index.php?/a...-DOS-Bootable-USB-Key-All-in-One-Package.html

2- Copy all files from the VTPATCH.RAR to Win98 DOS Flash Drive.

    http://levicki.net/downloads/

3- And then use "PATCH.BAT" (VTPATCH) to patch and flash.

    4- Success !!!! :D :D :D Very simple...

Windows 7 with Virtual Machine and Virtual Windows XP, OK!!!

    My BIOS Version = R0250Y0
    Notebook = Sony VAIO VGN-FW170J

Levicki, thanks alot for your excellent tool :) Have just performed on an SR26 (aussies/NZ machine). Worked a treat..

Out of interest, what are the potential negatives of this ? my vms are running with vt enabled, so thats great, just wondering if there are any known issues potentially?

i would assume that virtual pc should actually work faster now?

    Thanks

Just thought I would let you know my experience with VT Patch. I have an SR19 and applied the patch (after updating the bios) about a month ago. All went well until I put the battery back in and nothing happened - box was bricked. Contacted Sony stating device stopped working and after about a week of back and forth emails they sent out a courier with packing materials and took the laptop away. It came back 4 days later with a new motherboard (all covered under warranty - the laptop was 8 months old). After a couple of weeks of using my laptop again and getting frustrated using a dual boot config of XP and ubuntu, I decided to try VT patch again and low and behold it worked. So can now have XP in a VM instead - wahoo!

Good effort by Sony fixing my laptop, I guess that justifies the premium purchase price; bad effort by Sony that the VT is disabled (and the bios config is locked) in the first place; and huge thanks and appreciation to Levicki for engineering this solution - awesome.

Gary, i am awaring, that this is my fault. But why is so hard for Sony, that they give the download link, where can i get needed utilities? This is something that i can't understand. Notebook also have recovery partition, which could have drivers and utilities folders, but it doesn't. Inside win/sys32/drivers is an exe folder, but only with downloadable drivers.

And my opinion is, that the major differrence between Toshiba and Sony is in full free support over WEB, even if they had also removed recovery CD's from the box.

From this it is clear, that SONY number one priority isn't customers satisfaction anymore but making of an "easy get" money, like a loot of others huge companys. I am sad when my minds remebers me of something likes that.

And Gary, I'm not blaiming you in no way, please remember that.

The recovery partition DOES have all of the drivers and utilities and if you had bothered to read the instructions that came with your machine and created the recovery dvd's using that recovery partition you would have them in your hands right now. You didn't, so stop whining about it and buy a set from Sony. This is not about Sony's greed, it is about your own lack of preparation.

Nothing is wrong with me, I know (and obviously you don't) that if you had made the recovery DVD set (which uses ONLY the hidden recovery partition), you would find that there are applications as well as the drivers and auxiliary libraries and apps used by the drivers all contained on the DVD's.

Upper question? You had a question? If so I don't recall seeing one, all I have seen is someone blaming Sony because they wiped out the OS before finding out what they needed to do a clean install.

I am not going to trudge back through your tirades here to find the answer, so I will ask, did you wipe the ENTIRE drive clean when you wiped out the OS or did you only wipe out the C: partition? If only the C: partition, I have a solution to your dilema I will share with you.

We have hijacked this thread long enough. DO NOT REPLY HERE. Instead start a new thread in the Sony forum, send me a PM to let me know the thread and I will reply there.

Hi everyone,I am new here looking for some help.I am trying to enable VT on my new VGN-FW390CTO so that I can use Virtual Windows XP mode in Windows 7 RC.

    Details of the machine:

    Sony VAIO FW390 Configure-to-order
Processor: Intel Core2Duo T9550 2.66GHz (which is VT capable)
    BIOS version: AMI Aptio R2050Y0
OS: Windows Vista Ultimate 64 bit edition

(I have also installed Windows 7 Ultimate RC in a separate partition on the hard drive and dual boot into Vista/Windows 7 without any problem)

After going through this excellent thread,I created a DOS bootable USB flash drive with Win 98 using the download and instructions given here:

    http://www.dashken.net/index.php?/a...-DOS-Bootable-USB-Key-All-in-One-Package.html

Next I downloaded the VTPATCH.RARs file into this USB drive from Mr.Levicki's website. After adjusting the BIOS settings to boot first from External Device,I booted the machine with the USB stick. The following message came on:

    Microsoft(R) Windows 98
    (C) Copyright Microsoft Corp 1981-1998

    C:\>_(flashing cursor)

When I typed "PATCH.BAT" and pressed Enter,I got the following message:

    "Bad Command or file name"

I tried changing the Drive letter - only two letters were allowed, either C: or D: and it did not work with either.I tried changing the command to PATCH,VTPATCH,VTPATCH.EXE (with and without "....." marks) and still I was getting the same "Bad Command or file name" message.I also tried using two different USB sticks and still ended up getting the same error message.

What did I do wrong and why was I not able to proceed? On going through this thread, there were successful reports of flashing with this particular model of Vaio and version of BIOS.So,it must be me not doing something correctly?Could any one of you gurus out there help me?
