I'm an inpatient SOB so I just went ahead and patched my VGN-AW125J. No problems at all, VT is functional. As a virtualization professional, I will be watching this issue. In the meantime, I can get on with my beta testing a future release of VMware Workstation.

@levicki: is it possible to restore the bios to default function(without virtualization) and update the upcoming new bios upgrade from sony that allow us to use virtualization?

I can't say for sure, but I doubt if you will need to restore the BIOS to its original state before you can apply the upgrade. Most of the time a BIOS update overwrites the entire BIOS. But we won't know if I am correct until the update comes out and some one tries it.

Copying the files is not enough, you need to format the USB stick as a bootable device THEN copy the files onto it.

I just created this account to Thank Igor Levicki for the awesome work which allowed me to Enable VT on my Sony Vaio VGN-AW125J.

Before the patch, My bios version was 1.23.1109 AMI Aptio from 2007.

Here are my system details after the patch ran WITHOUT ERRORS:

As you can see, my Bios was updated to version 2.4 from 2008 and I am able now to launch my old Virtual PCs!!!!

Here is a summary of what I did:

    - Extensive Research and Reading.
    - Formatted my thumb drive with HP USB Dos Utlity (Chose Windows 98 Files).
    - Copied the VTPATCH folder to the thumbdrive as well.
    - Restarted computer and inside the Bios I reset Defaults.
    - Enabled "External Device Booting" and Changed boot order to "External Device" for the first place on the list.
    - Booted into MSDOS, Typed CD VTPATCH and then Patch.bat.
    - Sit back to see it work without errors!

Thanks a lot for all the great help Igor and all the other people that tried and posted their experiences here.

    Good Luck!

The realities of this forum are that most of the correspondents only understand English. If you expect to get an answer from a wide audience you might want to translate your message into English.

He said that the Link Doesn't work. . .

    Now a more pertinent question. . .
    I bought a Sony Vaio VGN-NW240F . . . Now this guy runs a duo t6600
Now. . . Before you say that Intel reports that as not having VT

I ran across a page from Leveno from Jan 2009 reporting the t6600 as having
    VT. . .

I would expect that it's possible that Intel changed their documentation for this
(now obsolete) processor because of the heat Sony has been given about this
    VT issue. . .

My Bios is Ami Aptio Setup Utility Copyright 2007 American megatrends, Inc
    Version 1.23.1109

My question is: Wouldn't it be easier just to ZAP the bit allowing the Advanced Menu to be shown rather than a full flash using Mr. Levicki's utility?
and my second question is would that zap be changing 0x25a to a 0x01 ????
At least for my old Sony Crippled version of Aptio v 1.24.1109 ????????

    -K

Just to let everybody know that Sony has released official BIOS update for FW100 Series. There may be similar BIOS update that Sony released for other older models.

Self-answer in case this is useful to someone else in the future: apparently all Vaios released after Oct 18 2009 can have it enabled in the BIOS if the processor supports VT (not all do).

I can confirm that the VGN-NW225f/b that I bought in November had VT available when I upgraded from a T4300 to a T9300. Way easier than I thought it would be!

Hi guys, sorry for not visiting more often but I was very busy. Thanks to everyone who said "thanks" for my patch.

It has been downloaded 7,740 times from my website so far so I would dare to say that it has been usefull to many Sony laptop owners out there.

For those who haven't noticed, Sony has released BIOS updates for many models so my patch is not neccessary anymore unless your laptop is not on the list of those who got the new BIOS.

Update for Sony VAIO VGN-FW190E is here:
    http://esupport.sony.com/US/perl/swu-download.pl?mdl=VGNFW190E&upd_id=5304&os_id=28

    - For those who asked about RAID I can't help them

    - For those who asked me whether they have to restore BIOS -- there is no need to restore the original BIOS, just perform the update, reboot, and change the option to enable Virtualization the way it should have been possible to enable it in the first place.

    @Kakunka:

    1. T6600 does not have VT -- check Intel specs:
    http://processorfinder.intel.com/details.aspx?sSpec=SLGF5

    2. It would be easier to change the bit if you:

    - knew which one (this is not Phoenix BIOS so no, it is not 0x25a)
    - had the utility which allows single bit to be changed (impossible because flash ROMs are usually written in sectors)
    - you had the CPU that supports VT

I have succesfully flashed my bios with levickys method on Vaio FW-11L. Last year i upgraded my Vista to 7 and after i discovered the new bios version here, i decided to flash it. I never had any stability problems on windows 7. But...

My Vaio is now bricked after flashing from modified to official version!!!!

The flashing process took approx. 4 minutes and hung at about 80 percents. 2 minutes later the cooler run at full speed, known as normal from the flashing process before. But the Windows 7 System hung up to. So i had to do a hard reset by taking the battery off. As a result, the notebook is booting with a new "press F12 for Network Boot" and i can enter the bios. The option to enable and disable VT isnt integrated as shown at the Vaio Website. If i save bios, the notebooks shuts down immediately. The Vaio logo is shown at the startup screen but then nothing happens, not on HD/USB-Thumb or CD-Boot option. Boot menu is not reachable per key combo.

Anybody some advices? How can i recover my bios? My 1 year guarantee is over...

    hi
so your bios is slightly bricked then when u see vaio logo ..
i think try remove battery for few minutes
then run that levicky patch again rewrite it ..
because there is no official bios update via boot... windows only
so only the solution is levicky way ..

Question: I see that Sony's released a BIOS update for FW490s running Vista 64, but not for Windows 7 64, which I finally got around to upgrading last night. Will the BIOS patch for the Vista FW490 work after I've already upgraded to 7?

Hi, Levicki. It's been over 2 years since I successfully applied your PATCH.BAT and I've been very happy with it.

However, I tried to apply the same patch, this time using the latest BIOS v. R1100Y0 as my VTPATCH.ROM. The patch fails to proceed with the following message:

VTPATCH 1.1 (C) 2009 by Igor Levicki. All Rights Reserved.

Checking for required hardware and features...

    CPUID instruction : supported
CPU made by Intel : yes
    RDMSR/WRMSR : supported
    CPUID : 06 17 6
    CPU type : Intel (R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU P8400 @ 2.26GHz
Intel VT : supported, enabled, locked

ERROR : Intel VT is already enabled on this computer.
Something has gone wrong while preparing the
patch or the user has aborted the process.

    Flashing has been skipped.

    ------ Nothing follows ------

Lastly, I also noted that all my existing BIOS v. R1090Y0 options are greyed out and can't be changed except for say Boot Order, Date, etc. I can't remember if this condition happened after I applied the patch 2 years ago, or something unexplainable happened since then.

In any case, could you suggest a procedure by which to upgrade to the latest BIOS v. R1100Y0? Thank you very much.

Let me clear up few things:

    1. If you flash an official BIOS update the patch will be removed since it is part of the previous BIOS.

    2. If I am not mistaken, all Sony BIOS updates after a certain date should have VT option accessible in BIOS menu so there should be no need to patch again.

If you really need to patch because your updated BIOS lacks the VT option first you have to flash the update and do a cold reboot, and then try to apply the patch because the patcher won't allow you to patch if VT is already enabled.

Bear in mind that if the updated BIOS image is too different the patcher may not succeed so make a backup of your current patched BIOS before you proceed so you can go back to it in case the new one cannot be patched.

Backing up and restoring BIOS image means that you have to understand how to dump and flash from DOS (not command prompt!) using AFUDOS utility.
