Just updated my VPCZ1 to W10.
The Nvidia 330 is gone, replaced by Microsoft Basic Display Driver.
What is the best strategy to install a driver, such as patches and so forth?
    Any help is appreciated.
    Thanks

CC VAIO_Z1_330M_INF_Patcher.exe.v4.7 is crashing if it can't find the extracted driver in the usual place. I had extracted and patched and backed up the folder, then installed from the backed up folder after a clean install. No crash if the driver is where it is supposed to be, in C:\NVIDIA\

Also, please confirm whether the current status of Test Mode is correctly indicated by the patcher on Windows 10. It says Test Mode disabled, even though I just restarted in Test Mode through Windows settings and successfully installed the patched driver.

Try this: use the patcher to disable test mode. Reboot and check,
Now enter test mode through Windows settings. Check again with the patcher.

Perhaps the patcher is looking for certain entries in the BCD.

You don't necessarily need to enable test mode. In my case I just disabled driver signing via advanced startup (hold down shift when pressing Restart and go from there)

We know that. We were dicussing that ComputerCowboy's patcher doesn't seem to be detecting that test mode is enabled through Windows settings.

Let me know if you guys have issues with the patch.

On thing I noticed is that the 3dVision patch doesn't look like it actually does 3d Vision.

What I did was actually mod the device id for the 480m

I'll try patching some other lines or adding some and see what happens.

Your 4.7 patcher worked perfectly for VGA on 341.74 on Windows 10.

I said that too, but CC isn't listening. LOL. Kidding, CC. The 4.7 version works, provided the driver files are in the right place on C drive. Ref Bug fix in v4.6. It's back.

Some issues with test mode - if you use the patcher itself to set the test mode, all is well. If you use Windows to restart in test mode, the patcher does not detect this and says that test mode is disabled.

You can go back, in the instructions you can put the old bois back if you saved it.
But you really don't need to, you can just switch the bios setting back.

The fans running on full and shutdown is indicative of a physical problem, I am suffering the same right now. I am going to open and replace the thermal pad with a shim and put new paste on it. It is also important that you use the Sony drivers for thermal strategy. The windows default stuff doesn't work too well.

Right now I have my processor clocked down to keep it cool. I am planning to fix this properly tonight. I will take pictures, and give a better write up.

I tried running 4.7 or 4.8 on upgraded and clean-install Windows 10. Shows the nvidia-chips and then "VAIO_Z1_330M_INF_Patcher has stopped working".

So instead, VGA patched the 341.74 win10 drivers with a Win7 machine. 341.74 installer now starts up, but fails 1/4 through. Expected?

Thanks for the heads-up. I got it working instead through "disabling driver signature enforcement".

I feel better about this than permanent test-mode because my Win7 install stopped installing security updates late into its life. I want to make sure its unrelated.

Self-Sign does drivers: Create a certificate and sign the modded driver yourself. No need to put windows into test-mode.

Do you have a link for whatever it is that you're talking about? The last utility that I have used that did this was DSEO. Never heard of any utility called Self-Sign.

    341.81 (for win10) is out.

Attached is the VGA modded inf using ComputerCowboy's 4.8 inf patcher. Should save Win10 people the trouble of going back to Win7 to run the patcher.

Is there source for the patcher so we can fix it to run on Win10?

Very nice of you, but I just installed the same driver on Windows 10 by running ComputerCowboy's v4.7 patcher. Didn't need to go to Windows 7 at all. Didn't even need to download v4.8. I have Windows 10 Pro x64 10240.

Just check the properties of the files in the patcher and if any of them say that this file is blocked because it came from another computer, just unblock it.

Hey man that would be awesome!! Cause I would also like to
know how to keep this computer working without the fans on all the time. Cause even after 5 years this thing is KING! I upgraded the SSD to 512GB and its 8GB RAM and i7. Its still even now a beast of a machine I look forward to see what you do and if it can be fixed, sony frowned upon me when I told them I opened it up!

    Not blocked because of that.

However the problem is an Exception error (from debugging with VS2015) is:
    {"Access to the path 'C:\\$RECYCLE.BIN\\S-1-{EDITED}\\$RACYTG1' is denied."}

I wonder why it is looking there in the first place. Did you delete the driver folder or something?

Permissions in folder access can be a real PITA sometimes. I'm going mad at work trying to set up a shared folder on an XP embedded machine to be accessed from a Win7 x64 machine. It keeps asking me for a username and password, rejecting every combination of the two that I can think of.

Hey ComputerCowboy, are you still using your Z1 to drive a GT 570 via external GPU by any chance? Following your input, this setup has served me well for 4 years, but after upgrading my Z1 to windows 10 (clean install) and installing the latest NVIDIA drivers, I am only able to display to a monitor connected to the card's DisplayPort. For each of the DVI ports the Z1 seems to detect these screens (Dell U3011s) but they remain blank/on standby.

Reluctant to downgrade to Windows 8.1 but this seems like the only option at this stage.

I did also try a different external graphics card (ATI HD 5870 which only has mini DiplayPort outputs) in this setup and that works with multiple screen for a few minutes then crashes in a big heap.

Any thoughts you or anyone else may have on this would be greatly appreciated!

It's strange, because it happened a few times in one week, but hasn't happened since for about a fortnight and I've hibernated at least once a day.

VPCZ135GW should be eligible for the BIOS HACK. The instructions are in the first post of this thread. Let us know here if you have any problems following the instructions.

    Hi all,
sorry to ask (75 pages is too much to read).
Currently I am on the BIOS hack with a VPC Z1.
I did the Win10 install on Stamina mode.
All went fine, even FN keys...
Now I switched back to speed mode. I was already and I am as well in "test mode" and in addition disabled driver verification.

I tried to install the driver which was not possible as the install is not finding a supported graphic card.
In addition if I start the patcher v4.8 "VAIO_Z1_330M_INF_Patcher.exe" the patcher tool stops immediately (only the CPU picture is visible for some seconds, afterwards WIN is telling me that it's unable to install).

Please can someone tell me how he installed Nvidia on Win10 (please step by step). Is there a manual way to install the driver if the patcher is not working for what ever reasons?

Would definitely appreciate any help :) Thanks in advance.

The patcher works perfectly provided that you have extracted the nvidia drivers to C:\Nvidia as it does by default.

    Hi ComputerCowboy!
Although i am some sort of geek, i've never hacked a bios, didn't seem safe for me...
Anyway, this solution have been suggested to me by a friend who heard me complaining about this laptop not wanting to boot with more than 4 GB of RAM per slot.
I've tried two different models, Corsair and Kingston, and it enter in BSOD right before it finished the boot process...
I've found your website, which impressed me, and after that i've found you here too...
Can you please confirm that this BIOS accept 2*8 GB RAM DDR3...! And if not, is there a way for this...?

    Thank you very much!

@Florian Apostoiu that depends on your chipset and processor. Just Google 'max memory size' and your chipset name, my Cantiga GM45/Core2 Duo is limited to 8 GB alltogether...

I am talking from my own experience, those paper stuff are not always helpful and true, and usually they are just that: words on paper. The real helpful thing is to try, and in many cases you will end up with pleasant surprises! :)
The "I think" and "I don't think" thing is childish and not profi... :)
