huh? i thought if it's prebuilt, then it's gen 2, and if it's cto or signature then it's gen 3

Shouldn't you use a memory stick over SD since you never use the memorystick port?
Does the Z support pro hg duo? -
From my googling it would appear that the class rating can sometimes be misleading, many of the cheapest cards claim class 10 but are fairly slow (and may run even slower than 10MB/sec), whereas the higher price cards run at guaranteed minimum 15MB/sec (transcend) or even 20MB/sec (lexar) speeds. "Brand names" in this case seem to be the fastest and most reliable.
Just found a Lexar professional 128GB card here, didn't realise 128GB was available already. High speed, high capacity AND high price, what's not to like!
The highest capacity Memory Stick card at the moment seems to be 32GB, plus it seems to be more expensive than SD. My main camera is a Sony and uses MS DUO, so I could actually use some of those spare MS DUO cards left over from the PSP days
-
Well, this is getting interesting now. I just noticed that Sony put in the charge for the notebook just today. I presume that this means it is to the point of being ready to be built.
So, finally there is some movement. -
Which SD card would you recommend/is the one I linked ok?
The price.
You can almost upgrade 128GB SSD -> 256GB SSD for that price.
-
goldentreesang Notebook Evangelist
Where do you see that? -
Likely the credit card/bank account.
-
goldentreesang Notebook Evangelist
Ah. My order detail still says $0 paid.
-
I didn't think that Sony charges your bank account/credit card until the laptop is ready to ship... They may do a preauth on your credit card when you order to make sure you have enough credit to buy it, but generally you should never see the preauth unless you ask the bank if you have any preauth.
-
And round we go - more mis-information from Sony. Although UK orders are being sent out tonight - they won't be delivered until early next week. That's what I've just been told. Who know's might all change tomorrow!
-
ordered mine yesterday, delivered expect between the 8 and 13 august - france
now that was faster than i expected -
Thanks I guess
-
Okay, there seems to be some confusion on this so I'll tell you what I know so far - plus some good news at the end...
When I first placed my order on July 15 Sony did indeed do a preauthorization. However, a few days later the money was back in my available balance. The bank informs me that the preauth is only good for 3 days.
That takes us to today where I see a charge from Sony of Park Ridge, New Jersey. Note that when I view my order online, nothing has changed there. I presume that there must be some sort of lag.
Now for the other good news: The amount of the charge was several hundred dollars less than what the price was supposed to be. It appears that Sony is automatically adjusting the price to reflect the current discounts. Needless to say, I'm exceptionally pleased by this turn of events
I suspect that by tomorrow morning the order status on their web site will reflect the update. -
goldentreesang Notebook Evangelist
So if sony does that and already credited my card, does that mean i got double discounts?
And I would just like some confirmation that my comp is being built and will be here the 12th reflected in an email or website. -
Absolutely agreed, Louche, and no offense taken. Another way to state this is that the culture of a community is capable of creating an atmosphere within which businesses experience an advantage or disadvantage to acting as responsible community members or not. Conversely, the more a community accepts as normal a bottom-line-only or gaming mentality, the less businesses see advantage to acting responsibly. This is cause and effect. An obvious negative example would be the way in which credit default swaps, made possible by a community with such a mentality, drove us to the edge of chaos and still haunt our financial recovery. In short, what we, as a community, view as acceptable is not divorced from the decisions of businesses, and recognizing this interplay is realistic, not idealistic. Also, recognizing that certain interests actively have been involved in efforts to move the goalposts of community expectations such that businesses are less accountable is not insignificant to an understanding of how we have come to our current financial and social situation. These conscious efforts to silo and divorce business decisions from the community are not benign or realistic. They arise out of short-sighted, very personal self interest which often serve neither the community nor the individual business. What we expect from our business community is very germane to the quality we all experience in the larger community. Recognizing this reality is basic to positively affecting how businesses function without unduly interfering in their processes.

Not fair. The tax in California sure adds up on a 3k+ laptop.

Friends in nevada? -
But you live in California and get to enjoy great weather year round.
-
I suppose that's true...
Hmm. That's a good idea.
Will they let you ship to a different shipping address than the billing address? -
goldentreesang Notebook Evangelist
Yes, my friend is shipping his to my house to save about $200 -
Good, absolutely no offense was intended, to you or anyone else.
True.
As long as we expect businesses to act as pure profit maximizers, then, no problem. If anyone expects otherwise, then they don't really understand how business works. As with virtually everything (businesses, computers, cars), unless you understand how they work (not how you want them to work or think they should work), you won't be able to effectively modulate its operation. As for "community" views or values, there is no single set. A community, however defined, will include many different and conflicting views which are then hashed out in the marketplace. Moreover, to the extent that businesses don't seek profit maximazation, they will be inefficient, fall behind their competition and eventually fail.
Please note that all business behaving as profit maximizers doesn't mean they act as clones. Honda and Ferrari both try to maximize profit, just in different segments which leads them to take different paths to horsepower, fuel efficiency, etc.
In short, understand how something currently works, really works, before trying to change it. -
Can people in the US advise once they get solid confirmation on when their laptop will ship.
I dont even live in the US so I wont get any emails haha. Thanks =)
Oh also... USA CTO... Gen 2 or 3 SDD? -
Still more expensive than CTO from US with Blu Ray writer and WWAN
-
After seeing ViDock with compatibility with ThunderBolt, I have faith in something for Z's Light Peak..

i spent some time trying to find this answer. sales support and tech support didn't know. I called up sony NYC and a man named mitchell told me to call back in a day and he'd have an answer. I called back and he confirmed that it was SATA3. Hopefully, he's right. -
^
Perhaps you guys got the gen 3 since you guys didnt get the gold or premium carbon (only in signature). -
I'm surprised at the price too - an actual reduction on the last model.
How imminently is "imminently'? I am burnishing my CC as we speak... -
My brother-in-law lives in Nevada.
Well, I may have found a reason to cancel and reorder, for the third time...
-
The price of the posted config is US$2780. Add 7% GST, and it's up to US$2975, which is S$3628 at today's XE exchange rate. So, only about S$400 difference. Which isn't excessive IMHO
-
As AnonymousCoward mentioned in a later post, it isn't actually more expensive.
I configured a similar model on the US Sony website and it came to US$2829. Now, I can't get an estimate on the shipping cost as I don't have a US address, but I guess it's about US$200, so that adds up to US$3029.
With 7% GST and the conversion rates involved, it will total up to SGD$3951.
I'd say that's a pretty good deal. You're only paying less than $50 more than the CTO, but you're getting local warranty coverage.
The model I configured on the CTO site is the exact one available in SG - W7 Professional, Core i7, 8 GB, Full HD, 256 GB SSD.
Yup, exactly. Once you factor in the shipping cost, the CTO & local Zs are about the same price. A damn good deal if you ask me.
-
Any pics comparing the carbon black and gold?
-
Do the Gold & Premium Carbon models come with the gen 3 SSD? TIA.
Apparently, the Z should be released today.
-
Black on the left and Carbon Black on the right.
And the Gold. Sweet eh? -
The pictures above... left is carbon black and the right is premium carbon black?
Also Gold is available in Australia. If you go to Sony.com.au you can see a few more basic pics of the Gold Model there. -
Yup, that's premium carbon black on the right. I'm loving that brushed metal look. It's just as alluring as the gold option.
Are you Australian, btw? I think Sony has grossly overpriced the Z in Australia. They've priced it at AUD$3999, and when converted to SGD, it's over $5100 based on today's exchange rate. Big bummer for you Aussies. -
Sucks that the US CTO doesn't give you the option to get premium carbon. They will probably make this available after the model has been out for awhile. I also like the brushed look of the premium carbon black. oh well...
Being Australian we are use to Sony Australia boosting the price. Dont know anyone who ever buys at this price - probably is tho! Below 4000 is pretty good because the older Z use to priced over 4000.
Luckily our dollar is high which allows me to use this extra money to get this laptop shipped and still save like $1000 hahaa...
For other Aussies out there if you dont want to bother with the extra work of getting CTO version, you can buy the 2999 signature version from bhphotovideo who ship to Australia. This makes it around $3000 delivered with our high exchange rate. -
The gold would be really nice, but they messed it up by matching the black keyboard with the brown interior. They needed a dark brown keyboard to complete the look.
-
Yeah, the good thing about the AUD is its high exchange rate. As you have mentioned, configuring a CTO model from Sony US is going to be a lot cheaper.. which somehow makes the AUD$3999 even more absurd, doesn't it?
You mean something similar to the X? The X had a matching gold keyboard with the aluminum frame, and that was very nice. -
Amazed at the price at what's being spent on this laptop. Don't get me wrong. All I've ever owned were Sony's premium portable notebooks from the PCG-Z1 to the S, SZ, VGN-Z, and now VPC-Z1. I don't think I will ever abandon the flagship models, but I thought, gone were the days of laptops costing more than $2700-$3000. This Z2 Series is going up and well over $4000 - Amazing!
Anyway, please post your thoughts and experiences as soon as get your Z2's. Can wait to read your impressions......Enjoy! -
Absolutely agreed, my friend. Let's just be sure to keep an inclusive view for those calculation. Nothing works independent of its environment or the ecosystem that surrounds and influences it. Example: Home Depot's decision to stock sustainable lumber arose not internally but from external influences. Still, they responded and not to the detriment of their bottom line.
On the other hand, maybe we should just get the maxed out gold Z2 and drown all our troubles playing with that little PMD. LOL! -
Got my update from Sony: We're now configuring your computer just the way you want it.
Woo, they're making progress in the US as well. -
Went down to Sony Paragon, and they said that they were not expecting anything until Sep/Oct timeframe.
Could be a clueless salesperson, but they definately didn't have any stock.
Do you know when stores are expected to have supplies? -
sony also charge sales tax in NV too, basically sony literally has store in 50 states so only states that does not have sales tax will do (Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire and Oregon)
linkkkk -
Well, the Z has already been made available on the Sony Singapore website.
VPCZ217GG : Z Series : VAIO Notebook & Computer : Sony Singapore
I guess that means it's available. I'm off to Funan to have a look. Will check back later.

There's a few SanDisk 32GB cards. I ordered this one from Newegg last week which is a Class 4: Newegg.com - SanDisk Ultra 32GB Secure Digital High-Capacity (SDHC) Flash Card Model SDSDRH032GA11 It works fine for storing movie files and the like. If you want to go a little faster you can look for a Class 10, but to tell you the truth I don't know how good the Z2's card reader is as that will probably be the bottleneck. You can find the Class 10s on Amazon.
This is the exact reason that I opted for the highest capacity Memory Stick since I use the SD slot all the time to do photo work from my digital camera. I've got this one in my Z: Amazon.com: Sony 32 GB PRO-HG Duo HX Memory Stick MSHX32A (Black): Electronics which is a Pro Duo HG so you're good.
It's for this reason that I'm glad Sony is Sony and includes a Memory Stick slot. Otherwise, if it were another company, we'd only end up with the 1 SD card slot. -
do you happen to still have the head2go adaptor? If so can you please try to see if you scan drive the U3011 using that with Z1?
-
They closed the only Sony store here in AZ but still continue to charge sales tax. What gives?
-
As people start getting their laptops can they post pictures and first impressions in the Z2 owners' thread.
http://forum.notebookreview.com/son...-vpc-z2-vaio-z-2011-series-owners-thread.html
This thread will be as it is normally closed at some point over the next few days as more people get their laptops. -
Does the Sony SG model come with WWAN ? Does not seem like it does,
would love to have it.
