New Vaio Z has key stroke of 1mm... which is about HALF of previous z series and even shorter than X series (1.2mm).
I wonder how keyboard would feel like :O
-
"Perversely, squeezing Light Peak into a USB3 connector is against the rules set by the USB Implementers Forum, so it can't be branded as USB3 either." I didn't pick up on that before... (from a link posted just earlier: Sony Vaio Z review: First Look | IT PRO Reviews)
-
Looks very strong. No keyboard flex either.
-
looks like it can fit the ac adapter, vdock, and some other stuff...

It's not "perversely" if it could potentially affect any released devices. Standards are only good when everybody plays nice.
-
It doesn't really "have" 3D, it just passes the video from a Blu-Ray disc to whatever display you have. I.e. it doesn't do anything to suppress it, but it can't encode/decode/adjust 3D video, just pass on the signal. So if your TV can combine the video from any BD player, it can handle it if you use the Z as a BD player too.
-
i wish they had something with similar physique and style available today...
thanks! -
Unless Rachel beats me to it. In short, the TT was a high end product - apart from the CPU and GPU, it had pretty much everything a Z had in a smaller package, and in some cases (dual 2.5" drive bays and 8-bit display) even surpassed the Z. It failed because people compared it to netbooks at a fraction of the price.
The Y, on the other hand, is bigger than the (old) Z and more of a cheaper replacement for those who can't afford a Z. Nice machine, but certainly not in the $4000 TT class. -
excelent videos!!!!!!
-
Interesting, probably the built in graphics holding it back, same as the Z1... but my Z1 gets a 6.4
I'd love to see the full WEI scores, or a better benchmark.
Whopdy do, the VPC-Z1 can do that without an external thingy.
I really wish it was a display port, it would be so much better. A couple HDMI and a couple VGA? what kind of crap is that. -
Those photos are a scary mess. All I could think of is that hinge on your VGN-Z actually happening to my VPC-Z. So far, your the only one I know of that had the issue with the hinge wearing down. Never had my VGN-Z550 to experience the same issues. Many here have complained of key and palmrest wear. I could see the same happening to my VPC-Z.
I too, like this Z platform. There really isn't anything close to it in terms of design and specs. As people continue to complain of issues, I like you, continue to buy them regardless.
So far, no complaints posted from those with the Silver VPC-Z. Seems those issues are only with the black.
Is that true. From the side by side photos, it looked like the Z2 was a slightly larger footprint than the Z1. Why would the keys be scaled smaller? -
The Z1 gets either a 6.3 or 6.4, depends if you used the modded drivers for the graphics cards. The Z2 should get a 6.7 as the HD 6650 will achieve that score, and no other aspect of the laptop (CPU, GPU, Disk Drive) can score lower than 6.7. Without the power media dock, expect a 4.7 (HD 3000 score).
-
You're forgetting Australia.
-
Because USA is the largest market and they need to have sufficient stock before it goes on sale. I believe the production hasn't yet started in full swing for the new Z.

Wish I knew Korean......why are they having a keynote in Korea when they haven't even released a video in Japanese? (Like the Z1's videos explaining performance, durability, etc.)
-
I guess we'll have to wait a bit more before seeing those fancy clips from Vaio designers.
-
larger foot print, but thinner. the 1mm travel is the distance the keys depress, so it's got nothing to do witht he width of the laptop.
-
Don't know if this has been posted before. Here are some PDF files I found on an Australian site :

[from the "official" owners thread]
Amazon.com: Sony VAIO VPCZ214GX/B Notebook PC - Black: Computer & Accessories
Looks pretty unofficial though. -
Plus:
W7 Pro 50$
+4GB memory 200 $
+128GB SSD 300$
PMD ???$ (400EUR from Sony Germany, basic model)
So, you're about 3,050 $ without FHD screen and without PMD....
I would rather wait for Sony USA official prices.
Cheers,
Miki -

It looks like the only thing they upgraded from base was the processor. I highly doubt that price is right. Sometimes, amazon will make product pages as placeholders and put ridiculous prices on them so that people don't buy them (I've seen this done with a lot of phones). That model right there cant be more than like $1800, especially without a PMD
-
Couldn't agree more, not everything is cheaper on Amazon
PMD or as some call it simply Vdock
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8mAO9H4tTR4
similar action as with toggle stamina/speed button. Screen would flick for a split second.

$3999 AUD? Wow......I'm speechless.
-
goldentreesang Notebook Evangelist
Looks like the docking/undocking action takes a little longer than i would like. Not a big problem though.
where did you see that? -
Base price for i5/4gb/128gb/900p/dock will be $1999 list in the US.
-
Rotho's post a page ago.
specifically, here:

Thats a great price point imo. How much is excluding the dock going to take off of that price? -
What?? Are you sure??? Cuz in that case.. if it would be true, since the difference between US market and Italy market, it would be possible to see Z at 1500€ ... but it would be strange against other Europe market.. Do you know something about Italy?
-
you're sure that's with the dock? seems about right (slightly high) without it, but I am quite surprised to see a configuration with MSRP below $2000 including the dock. If correct, that's a screaming bargain and will be a huge seller.
-
goldentreesang Notebook Evangelist
Its the same price as the previous Z. o.0 -
^Yep.
10char -
No US retail configs without dock. Perhaps via CTO, I have no visibility there.
-
goldentreesang Notebook Evangelist
Nice. Do you have any information about the other retail configs?
Im looking for i7, 900p, 256gb gen3, 8gb, DVD PMD, backlit, sheet battery, and premium carbon -
I didn't notice that he mentioned the dock also..
-
goldentreesang Notebook Evangelist
At $2000, the previous Z included the ODD and discrete graphics. It only makes sense to also include them in the new Z
-
That's not the same in Europe -,-
I'm comparing what Beaups said and actual prices in Germane market..
In US we have 1999$ .. in Germany for the same configuration we have 2.153,98 € -> 3 083,63777 $ ... even taking into accoutn VAT taxation (19% in Germany) we would have 2378$ against 3083$ ... how is it possible such a huge difference??? (but if I'm not wrong.. it was the same with the previous Z..or quite similar)
Different for S series... in US, SA with 4GB, i7, 500GB 7200 RPM comes at 1619$, in Germany 2035$, in Italy 1756$, but taking into account VAT taxation we see comparison for German market is 1926$ (19%) against 2035$ and for Italy we see 1943$ (20%) afainst 1756 $ ... So why only with Z is there an overprice, and HUGE overprice? -
All I can say, I paid VGN-Z 2,640$, same model in Germany was around 2,800 EUR at that time!
My last 3 Vaios were bought in US, due to almost 1:1 USD/EUR pricing. Huge savings.
I've configured new Z in Germany for 2,944 EUR, can't wait to see how much will it cost at Sony US.
btw, it's not only laptops, check car prices in US and Germany....
Cheers,
Miki -
You paid 2.460$.. and what about taxation?? I mean.. how much you paid in addition to the US price due to taxation?? And what about warrancy and extention warrancy?
-
Warranty - if something's broken you have to ship it back to San Diego, US
.
Not only that, keypads are not the same layout (US based models have small Enter, and all EU models have that big Enter button). Japanese models have totally different keypad as well.
So when my keypad was broken I had to purchase it directly from Sony US, as Sony Europe (based in Netherlands) doesn't supply/support US based models in Europe.
Not ideal, but you save a lot of money, plus this is the ONLY issue I ever had with Vaio, all my other Vaios were/are perfect.
Cheers,
Miki -
Beaups, is there any chance that they release the new Z in gray/silver/white at anytime? I probably will not buy this revision of the Z, but for this first year in college I will most likely buy a MacBook Air, then next year sell it and buy either a MacBook Pro or Sony Vaio Z since next year everything goes to quad-core.
-
lovelaptops MY FRIENDS CALL ME JEFF!
Is this not a surprise? Makes the Z2 entirely viable as a replacement for the Z1. Sure, you give up a bit, but you get so much more! Anyone interested in a (lovingly) used Z13? -
All I've seen are black and blue, but that doesn't necessarily mean anything.
-
Thanks beaups. Hopefully they release one in silver/white because I am definitely not in love with the black. I love the design though.
Any pictures of the Z in blue? -
goldentreesang Notebook Evangelist
Blue inside, black outside. Looks pretty terrible IMO

PS, TSE you should probz update the OP
-
???
Next year's Ivy Bridge processor will pack more computing power into each core allowing dual core machines to be even faster/more capable. The laws of thermodynamics, however, will remain unchanged. On what basis do you claim that "next year everything goes to quad-core"? -
goldentreesang Notebook Evangelist
Nah man Thermodynamics is getting updated too. -
Are you allowed to send a Z bought in the US to SONY Germany if you're facing any problems?
-
Didn't Intel officially say that all standard voltage mobile processors will become quad-core with Ivy Bridge?
