whats the differential between canadian and US prices on the Z at launch time historically? Does the exchange rate play any part in that(i really doubt it)?

if the sony vaio z launches at $2k with the dock and CTO at like $1650 without the dock, it would instantly be MUCH more popular if they started advertising the no-dock price.

As I said before my only issue was keypad and that came from US. My friend have laptop repair centre, so if I would need anything I would go there and finish in 1 hour.

Sony Germany directed me to Sony Netherlands, as they cannot (or won't) order parts for specific US based models (like keypad). If I would need new screen/ hard drive, I guess those components are the same all over world, so wouldn't be a problem. At the end even Netherlands couldn't (or again wouldn't) order it from US.

A lot of people I know in Germany complained about slow repair procedure in official Sony repair centres (3-4 weeks). Too long for me.

    Cheers,
    Miki

    Yeah, that really was confusing.

So I am still standing by my statement that the Z will get Quad-Core next year... I think Intel is planning on making the Quad-Cores 35w and the Dual-Cores 25w TDPs. I distinctly remember that from an official intel press announcement.

The new Z has gobi 3000 for WWAN. Does anybody know anything about it? Is it sim locked? Can user change the sim? If yes, where is the sim holder placed? On Previous z models sim holder was next to notebook battery but I can't find it on Z2 pics.

The Aussie prices are absurd. How can Sony be serious? especially since the Aussie dollar is now more valuable than the green-back.

    3999 Australian dollars = 4 272.5316 U.S. dollars

...for 8GB RAM, Full HD, 256 SSD, PMD config.

I agree with you, there won't be any quad core in this Z, they would have a too high energy drain.

But from my point of you, I love this Z very thin.. this is right what I'm seeking for.... points of view :)

Seen what's in vr-zone, we can state that ram WON'T be upgradable. There's no hint about the possibility of upgrades about SSD.

Will there be any possible way for the laptop (with or without dock) to drive a 30" monitor at full 2560x1600 resolution? I was totally psyched to go all out on a tricked out signature model of this to replace my aging desktop but it would be a deal killer for me it can't drive my 30". I was hoping I'd actually be able to drive dual 30" monitors via the dock. Hopefully, as others have said, Sony comes to their senses and puts out a dock that has display port or at least dual-link DVI connectivity instead of additional HDMI and a bloody VGA connector. I'd be surprised if anyone with the dough to get a brand new Z w/dock uses a monitor that accepts only VGA input.

Count me in! However, GPU can easily be upgraded (they just have to put powerful one in Vdock). As for quads, I'm not sure why it isn't possible, especially as new Z has quite large vents, occupying almost half of left side, plus twin fans.

I guess we'll have to wait for some real reviews/benchmarks to see how it copes with heat.

    Cheers,
    Miki

i know we've said the touchpad is small, but it looks particularly small in this shot :(
I've actually decided i don't need a discrete graphics card so am thinking this laptop might be for me, annoyances aside.

Though I need 512gb ram and i don't think I can justify the ~£1100 upgrade. Not sure how else to go about it as you can't put in other SSD's can you?

512GB of storage? i'm willing to bet that is 65%+ movies and music.

EDIT: ps, just get an external, it'd probly still be lighter than other lappies.

EDIT: pss, or store only what you ACTUALLY need on your laptop.

Not sure if this was already posted (didn't see it), but the Z21 is also being launched in Singapore / SE Asia with a late July availability. This region never has CTO, so it seems the Z will always be bundled with the dock, but as usual prices are expected to be very expensive (~SG$4000, which is US$3000+), closer to Europe than U.S. prices.

The Latest Sony Vaio Z - As Premium as Ever! - HardwareZone.com

I will probably buy the Z in the US with a CTO unit when I next visit in September (surviving with a Samsung S9 for now). In the meantime, I will see if I can get my hands on a unit at the Sony Centre in London and/or Singapore (am lucky to have a store immediately next door to my S'pore apartment). Am looking forward to some user reviews as well...

Apparently, this really does leave North America as the last region to launch the Z? Usually Singapore is a month or two behind the US, but not this time.

Sweet. Where are you, in the UK? If so, maybe I'll stroll on over to the Sony Centre in Kensington and harass them to see when I can get my grubby hands on a display unit.

EDIT: nevermind, called the Kensington store and was told they won't have any units until late July or early August, so apparently the CTO models will be shipped well before the Sony Centres even receive display models

You are in the first wave, no one has it yet, not even review models. I see the UK online store now shows new order shipping delay down to 1-2 weeks, so your timing makes sense.

Be sure to give us a full report (with pictures) when you receive it, since apparently it still won't be available at retail stores.

well it should, specially that its using fiber to do it, not copper as the thunderbolt.

damn they look perfect, so small. would be even more perfect if slightly larger capacity.
I was hoping for large internal drive, and then having an external drive for backup, but guess i could always buy two of these.
only thing is with only one usb 3 port on the z, you won't get the quickest transfer between two external drives...

I made a slight adjustment to how I store my media (photos, music and video) a year or two ago by "outsourcing" the majority to a centralised NAS with a few TB of storage. The NAS is available by Wifi and also available over the internet. So now I keep the bulk of my media on the NAS, which allows me to have a fast, efficient and quiet (but low capacity) SSD on my main laptop, but still have easy access to the main media. I still keep the most recent / important stuff on my main laptop though, so I've set rules; eg. the last 2 years of home photos and home movies (instead of all 10+ years) for my main laptop, my favourite music (~15GB) on the laptop with the total collection (~35GB) on the NAS. Old work projects go to the NAS. Current work projects and documents of course stay on the main laptop all the time, but they don't need so much space. It's a system that requires thought but it has worked well for me.

Anyone notice the photo of the sheet battery being charged seperately to the main laptop using a little charging module on page 2 of that Hardware Zone review?? I wonder if this is included with the sheet battery, or is it an optional extra? You probably still only get one AC adaptor though.

I'm also thinking, the sheet battery would be perfect for watching movies on a bed / duvet / blanket etc as it redirects the vents to the sides of the unit instead of the bottom (preventing bottom airvents from being blocked).

Noticed that. Pretty slick how they built the power brick into the attaching module, leaving just a wire and plug to plug in a wall.
