The larger battery that you can put in such a small device is the 4-cell battery. More extended than that is impossible, can't upgrade! At least the larger battery doesn't stick out a lot, and with a little of squizzing you will have over 6 hours which is decent.
-
It can stick out.
Thou this battery life is the same as asus EEE's, 700 and 900. Dont know about 1000 -
Yes, you are right.
I just saw that in the top model P19, the sonystyle offer the extended battery included in the price. This is good, together they will give 9 hrs of battery life. Oh man, I saw the video on youtube in the post #444, it scared me! I hope that was the 1.33 ghz and the lappy was full of bloatware because was extremely slow!
Btw, I will wait for some reviews before I decide and maybe I will grub one of those in their next refresh in 3-4 months. Hoping for a mate black, I hate that is sooo shinny. -

yea but the US only offer 1.33GHz option ... -

The video quality in that link is so poor, it's hard to tell what they're trying to get the computer to do. It looks like they're trying browse folders in Explorer, in which case the thing is slower than any UMPC I've ever worked with, including the Kohjinsha SC3 and Vye S37. On its face: Unacceptable.
I'll withhold opinion though, until more thorough reviews are done of production units. -
Battery life looks to be disappointing i agree. Those 5 hours with wifi on and low brightness would soon translate to 3 hours something with mobile broadband. I suppose you could carry two batteries but this makes it lose its appeal a little. It seems like you may need to carry your power adapter if you are on the go for very long periods of time.

That's crazy slow. Guess they shouldn't have gone with Vista!

Great links outie, +1 rep!
I really like the P and I was close ordering it today, but some posts here made me worry about the slowness and the battery life. Me neither I never had an Atom laptop so I really have no idea what to expect. For this price I should expect a Core 2 Duo ULV or Core Solo but maybe the battery life would be horrible, if you consider that now is 2:45 under normal usage. -
A slick little piece of info I have not seen elsewhere, but a bit of creative engineering:
The Display and LAN adapter for the P series can attach to the little power brick, to form a little bar for traveling. It's kinda hard to explain, but basically they form a longer bar to make for less things rumbling around with you.

The linked bar design for the Display/LAN adapter and AC brick are genius. You won't leave home without it. The nylon case for the P-series is also an excellent design as it includes a second smaller case to hold the adapter and power brick. Sony really thought this one out.
I've already pre-ordered and am not concerned about the performance. This isn't a machine to run Crysis, encode HD or calculate an orbital launch; it will be fine for its intended purpose: internet connectivity, light gaming, video entertainment and light office applications. -
You're special -
What "light gaming" do you intend to do on this machine...solitaire?
-
A little message from "the special": Perhaps there can be some misunderstandings here, because I usually use a Norwegian keyboard (or an UK or US keyboard with Norwegian settings). I will try and not repeat my main points, but in my experience, I am more prone to misprints (mishits) when the right shift key is located "in between" and too near the other keys, especially too close to the arrow (up) key. IMO the number of mishits is reduced when the right shift key is large enough and located "where I think it should be", that is: as long out on the right side as possible, just as the left shift key is located out on the left side.
This is my way of being special... -

My point about the location of the right shift key is an issue here:
"It has a big keyboard which the SONY claims to be just 3% smaller than the regular TT keyboard. This means that users will have no problems while typing long documents on the baby VAIO. But, do you see what we see? It has the same small shift key just like the EEE PCs. The only difference being is the placement of the shift key is now on the left of Up-Arrow key rather than on the right, which is seen on the EEEs." ( http://gadgetmix.com/index/?p=2476) -

Lemon, I see your point in the above post, and think that I cannot resist giving the P a serious try. I hope I will experience the positive effect of the good space around each key.

Its really big in my opinion for a so called pocketable device , try printing this mockup they are making on umpcportal.com

if you print it out it should be 240mm wide. If not try changing the print scaling options in pdf reader (page scaling should be set to none)

The right shift it sure is an issue. But anybody who wants, will adapt soon. I even adapted to Asus EEE 700 keyboard and after a few hours I was able to type really fast, so I am sure vaio P keyboard will not be an issue to skilled people.
And on the other hand, unskilled people actually dont even notice different keyboards -
I think the right-shift issue is funny. Personally, I only use the left-shift when typing, and all this time I've been wanting a second Fn key on the right side of the keyboard so that I can access PgUp/PgDn without having to use both hands or to stretch one hand.
Now if only I didn't also want the Japanese keyboard which actually places the right-shift to the right of the up-arrow (omitting the second Fn, in order to accomodate JP-specific keys)... -
For whatever it's worth, I checked the Sonystyle website today (Japan version). According to the site, the 60GB HDD and 128GB SSD models (in all colors) won't be shipping until mid-February. The 64GB SSD model is slated to be delivered at the end of February. Here in Japan, WAN (through DoCoMo) and GPS module is not available to even preorder yet. I don't know if these dates are because of high demand or because they don't currently have the components available yet (or both). As the Spring models are being released here in Japan, I definitely wouldn't order a notebook for delivery well over a month away.
I also biked over to the Sony Building today and they had a large Type P showcase. I must say I wasn't impressed. I'm not a fan of pointing sticks, so that's one reason (I can understand why they used one, though). However, the size was larger than I had expected, actually. It's certainly not pocketable. The screen was also a disappointment. Although it was very sharp and the colors looked great, the aspect ratio was ridiculous. Most applications are still geared toward being viewed on 4:3 displays (Panasonic, one of the most popular makers here in Japan, sells mostly 4:3 laptops). The only two applications I can think of that may make use of this wide display are Excel and playing widescreen movies (the vertical resolution is insufficient for displaying two pages side-by-side). Despite its tiny keyboard, I actually prefer the Fujitsu UX series (it's smaller and it's a tablet, being much more practical for reading pdfs, taking notes, and the like). Funnily enough, someone placed an ad showing the VAIO P's size right under the Fujitsu UX when I visited the nearby electronics store later today (Bic). The UX looked almost half as wide and the depth was roughly identical (the UX has a 1280x800 resolution; same as the MacBook Air but in a 16:10 5.4" screen). The point is that I'm not really sure how the P is meant to be used. The Sony, whose screen is tiny like the Fujitsu, is not meant to be held in the hands. The text on the screen was so small that I constantly had to bend over to see it on the display model, and it was already on a relatively high platform. Increasing the size of the text and icons would only make the widescreen more useless, eliminating valuable vertical space. Oh, and one other thing. The P I tried was every bit as slow as the one you saw in the video someone posted earlier (Aero was turned off). I'm sure this was only due to the typical Sony bloatware, though.
Incidentally, I'm typing this on my 18.4" VAIO AW Video Edition, which is quite the opposite of the P! The P would have been a nice match, if I had liked it. -
ok.. had a go at the machine...
wow... it's painfully slow.. @_@
skip! -
I'll bet Sony puts out a Windows 7 upgrade when that is available. They couldn't put XP on it due to Microsoft's restrictions and probably didn't want to wait half a year to announce the P when they are already geared up for production; so we are stuck with Vista for now.
-
If they had a less "festive" model, I could see myself going for one of these, and work to get a decent Linux install on it, with the focus on productivity tools. -
Thanks -
SOnystyle.uk.co has a nice P model

Better get XP or Windows 7. -

The Japanese version has a lot more options and configurations. Conics.Net has it up for order:

More expensive than buying from Sony here in the U.S., but if you want the 1.6 or 1.8Ghz models, they're available. -

Well, Aero works on the Intel X3100 - as the X4500 is its successor it should work too.
Also - some older games will run too, but the CPU may be a bottleneck together with the HDD... -
Uh, the X4500 is not the GMA500.
-
hmmm....
Ups, my fault ...
Point is though, Aero without transparency may work. -
Actually Aero includes many effects, one of which is transparency. Aero either works (with transparency) or not at all.
