DIY is not a problem, the problem is warranty void, have to take care about this. In Germany (and mostly Europe) if you open laptop by yourself warranty will be void. So my advice: better buy it from Sony, those few extra bucks you'll "save" can cost you tremendously latter on.
-
The thing is, wheather they put raid controllers on all models or not?
And the price difference will be not in a few bucks:
"sony's" ssd 64gb 700$
osz ssd 64 gb ~340$
multiply x2 for raid
but i don't need ssd raid. for me two hdd in raid would be enough. and i don't see simple raid options at sony.com -
miki69, you can replace RAM and possibly HDD too, if there are "doors" on the back of the laptop. I am certain about RAM, not so sure bout HDD.
-
Or buy from resellers like Portableone.com (US) or Notebook.de (Europe) who offer custom configurations.
I believe you are right. However SZ (and probably Z) don't have 'doors' to the harddisk. -
Wow had been difficult read 40 pages of this thread from last night.
I am really impressed with the Z series. I will have to decide what I want more SSD or blu-ray even if I would like both.
Where can we europeans purchase the Z? Sites as conics.net and portableone.com they didn't update yet. I am sure in Europe it will be no SSD option or blu-ray. Also, in Europe we use HSDPA no? The Sprint WWAN here is useless...I hope on-line I will be able to customize the Z with 3G and SSD or blu-ray.
Really amazing the Z, I will not wait for the Montevina TZ after all! -
Berlin press event is on now. In 16:9 aspect ratio
http://club.vaio.sony.co.uk/clubvaio/gb/en/vaio10/flash.jsp -
Wanna buy the FW because i do a lot of video editing and seems like its perfect. Only gripe i have right now is the fact that it isnt that portable. I've been waiting for a vaio with a large enough screen that was on the portable side. Cant go with the Z and the SR....THe Z's screen is just to small.....and the SR dosent have the resolution nor the screen.
Thinkin of going with the FW but just wondering how heavy it is? I move around a moderate amount, think its portable enough for that..i mea it wont be to heavy eh? -
Watching now, thanks Phil
-
funny, Vaio.de shows that Z series will be using DDR2 not DDR3 modules (mistake maybe?)
http://vaio.sony.de/view/ShowProduc...E_cons&pageType=Overview&category=VN+Z+Series -
Error..because:
Geschwindigkeit des Speichers (MHz) 1066
Speicher-Typ DDR2 SDRAM (2 x 2048 MB)
It says 1066MHz and this is DDR3 frequency. -
Good questions, anyone knows more? I live in Europe too and I can't even think getting one here, I must import it. Yeah Spring WWAN is for US.
-
sony.es is showing the models leaked, and the VGN-FW11J is with the HD3650 yay!!
http://vaio.sony.es/view/ShowProduc...11J&site=voe_es_ES_cons&category=VN+FW+Series -
Stores were not "allowed" to advertise new models untill the recent press conference in Berlin.
But as we speak I am sure pages are popping the new models online, for example:
http://www.notebook.de/sony-vaio-vgn-bz-serie-g-847/
http://www.notebook.de/sony-vaio-vgn-fw-serie-g-826/
http://www.notebook.de/sony-vaio-vgn-sr-serie-g-827/
http://www.notebook.de/sony-vaio-vgn-z-serie-g-842/
But do mind that specs are probably wrong at this time and rather wait a few days so this clears...I have noticed BZ11MN is advertised with LCD LED screen, thou on the vaio official page its not. -
I wish the Z had an option to not get the Sprint WWAN. I'd rather not have to pay more for a laptop to get something that I don't want or need.
I also wish the SR had an HDMI port. It's a bummer that it doesn't.
And while I'm at it
, I wish the FW were a tad lighter. Sony could have done it, but they chose not to.
-
I don't see any possible customization with blu-ray drive or the 128 GB SSD. There is one option with 32 GB SSD and one with 64 GB SSD...and all the models DVD drive! Poor us europeans.
Does anyone know when they gonna be released in Japan these new models?
http://www.notebook.de/sony-vaio-vgn-z-serie-g-842/?section=shop&group=842/&lang=en -
I was playing with the Z CTO and you can't have the 128GB SSD if you also want BluRay. You can only choose the DVD SuperMulti drive.
And it looks like you can't select it without the WWAN (which is Sprint) in the USA. If you use Sprint, that's great. If not, it's useless. -
The specsheet says it's LED.
http://img177.imageshack.us/my.php?image=vgnbz11vnxo5.jpg -
Does anybody know if notebook.de ship to the UK?
(it currently states "installment sale (only for Germany)" -
So I take it VAIO's Japan team had little or nothing to do with the design or manufacturing process of the new models? It's surprising that there's no news about them yet on their press release page, being behind North America and Europe.
-
that message is for the Intel 4700MHD, if you look at it as soon as you pick HiColor, the option for the 4700MHD disappears and the message appears under it.
-
Odd..
http://vaio.sony.co.uk/view/ShowPro...1MN&site=voe_en_GB_prof&category=VN+BZ+Series
No word here about LED LCD, thou on other BZ series:
http://vaio.sony.co.uk/view/ShowPro...1VN&site=voe_en_GB_prof&category=VN+BZ+Series
http://vaio.sony.co.uk/view/ShowPro...1XN&site=voe_en_GB_prof&category=VN+BZ+Series
It might probably take some time for smoke to clear, so we get the final specs
-
thats news alone made my day......thanks dito
EDIT: Thats a Sony Spain/Europe thing only. The US Sonystyle apparently will not have that. Anyone know how we can get our hands on a FW with HD3650 in the US? -
Really, this is strange. One would expect that they are released to Japan first and after US and Europe.
Hope they will announce it soon, I may order a Z series from Japan. -
The sony vaio UK site is listing all three as carbon fibre chassis:
http://vaio.sony.co.uk/view/ShowProduct.action?product=VGN-Z11MN%2FB&site=voe_en_GB_prof&category=VN+Z+Series -
FW comes with 400 GB at 4200, max 320 GB at 5400, and 200 GB at 7200.
9300M is not better than the HD3470. 9300 is a faster version of the 8400 GS, while the HD3470 is an improvement over the 8400 GT. ...Still hoping that they offer HD3650 as a customizable option not just on the J model. -
notebook.de ships all over europe.
That text you copies is only for finance options!
You can PM me and perhaps we can find a good deal for you, I dont want to spread any more advertising here -
was watching the berlin event (which was laggy as hell, but i caught a few bits) and the Z is definitely designed in Japan. They had a blueprint and some concept sketches in japanese. I'm guessing europe has a way larger market with higher demand, and sony is giving them priority over their local market.
hence the press events located in the euro region. -
Hey there's one thing I don't understand about the Z...
Different models say 128mb and 256mb of dedicated video ram, despite having the same graphics card.
Can anyone explain? >___< (to my knowledge, the 9300M GS has 256mb)
Gonna customize one of these babies soon!
Can't wait!
-
Seems like sonystyle in Europe (I checked the sites in UK,Spain,Italy) will not offer at all the options of SSD and blu-ray drive for the Z series. Only normal HDD of 200 GB 5400 rpm and 320 GB for the high spec model. This really sucks! And after they expect that people buy from them...I will definitely import from US or Japan.
-
SR190 CTO with ATI HD3470 upgrade for $1499
otherwise the similar spec'ed baseline Z costs 1799.
Does the $300 difference justify with the .5 lbs reduction, HDMI, and dual graphic card?? -
If money is not an issue, what would be reasons to get an SR instead of a Z?
-
Mhm that isnt true, there are DDR2 with 1066MHz too
An other question ^^
Does the European Z Series have a Blueray Drive? I dont find it in the spezifications
And whats up in Japan? Do they have a new Notebook Series ( eventually Z) as well? Or can you buy an european Notebook with a japanese Keyboard? ^^
sorry for my bad english <.< -
answers for that are spread evenly over the last few pages.
however, i'll give you a top-of-my-head list of the advantages of getting a Z:
. carbon fibre body
. hdmi output
. option for bluray drive
. 1366x768 / 1600x900 resolution
. xbrite duraview as oppose to just xbrite-ECO
. 9300gs m can be ran in 'SLI-like' mode with the x4500 GMA (essentially making it a 9600gs)
. option for SSD memory (might be a feature on the SR too? not sure)
. DDR3 memory as oppose to DDR2 memory (unconfirmed)
. lighter by 0.5 lbs
. other features like everywair not available on the SR -
Is that true? I dont hear anything about it
How does it work? You have only a switcher between speed an starmia mode
-
Hehe, I meant the other way around
"Why getting an SR, an NOT a Z?"
I really like the specs of the Z, but I'm afraid it'll be too small. So I was thinking that the somewhat larger SR might just do as well. However, your reply doesn't exactly convince me that I'll like the SR
-
i read that briefly somewhere...
someone can back me up or correct me
-
-double post- -snip-
-
any advice on this?
-
here, i'll try again.
. 1280x800 resolution might be a better fit for u
. cheaper price, you can get a beefed up SR for the price of the Z
. apart from xbrite-duraview, both the Z and SR have the same LCD
. more colours to choose from!
. HD3470 comparable to the 9300gs m
. cpu config can goes as high as the p9600 (2.80ghz), Z only goes max of p9500
. closing the lid, the SR is 0.9", the Z is 1" on the opening end
. battery stamina as long as the Z (6hrs standard, 9hrs extended)
. cylindrical barrel design even on the SR!
. people might mistaken ur SR for a Z because it looks really similar! -
What about using an external monitor with a Z or SR?
-
Personally, I'm not sure there's enough difference to warrant both a Z and an SR. Not sure why Sony felt they needed both.
-
that's to make the SR look good,
look a page back, i made another difference list how the Z > SR.
u will see. -
Is the Z listed on the UK sonystyle? i've been checking sonystyle.co.uk all day and there seems to be nothing
-
This is exactly what I'm planning to do. A nice docking station on your desktop where you plugin you're notebook. I initially wanted to go for the successor of the FZ, but when that turned out to be a 16,4" I felt that was just one step too big. The only fear I have is that a 1600x900 screen on a 13,1" monitor is too much. I want to use my notebook -multitasking- for long times, relativelly comfortable.
-
Jayayess1190 Waiting on Intel Cannonlake
This? The pdf says the gpu must be at least 256mb dedicated: http://www.nvidia.com/object/hybridsli_notebook.html -
I'm also surprised there's no info on the japanese page...I'm expecting more custom options there...and hopefully also more reasonable prices...it would be nice if I can choose the one with blue-ray reader, not writer....for much less bucks...I would say, quality blue-ray media are still quite expensive.
-
So I'm almost definitely getting the FW, but I have a few questions first:
1) Why can't I get the better screen with the ATI graphics card? That doesn't make too much sense....
2) Does the Blu-Ray reader drive also read and write DVD's?
3) Do you think getting the notebook in white will make it dirtier faster? I know people with Macs complain about that. -
1. no idea
2. Yes and also CDs
3. I doubt, macs are not made with such quality as sony vaio -
Z-serie
