I'm in France,
I thinks it isn't in stores because here:
https://shop.sonystyle-europe.com/SonyStyle/catalog/setCurrentItem/(z_cua_accArea=z_cua_specs&xcm=PCM_b2ccrmstandard&z_cua_add=z_cua_fullspecs&layout=15_116_61_55_117_121_2&uiarea=2&ctype=areaDetails&next=seeItem&carea=4874C4AA99650180E10080002BC29B86&order=null&citem=4874C4AA99650180E10080002BC29B8647C5610448BC0058E10080002BC29B74&z_cua_sel_acc=)/.do
we can only pre-order.
Laptop are more expensive than in US !!!!!
Last question, why autonomy on French Website is of 2 hours and not 6 !! -
so anyone knows why P9500 is not offered in FW. and the difference between P9500 & T9400 other then wattage?
-
I see a P9500 and no P9400.
the P one is power optimized, uses less power, the T one is performance optimized uses more power.
the Z has the more energy efficient 2.53gig since its meant to be a portable laptop, where as the FW is not meant to be taken everywhere, at least that is my take on it.
http://www.intel.com/consumer/learn/notebook/centrino-detail.htm -
They take the lower estimate of the battery life.
As of now even in the US you can only pre order at sonystyle. -
I have just see that a FW laptop is available.
We can order it and receive it in 24h

But ... 1750 €€ -
Laptops in Europe are not this same as laptops from USA. AFAIK in UK we dont have SSD, btw they r more expensive as well.
-
So does it mean that I will void the warranty if I buy the Z off newegg.com, amazon, or some other online retailers?
Thanks. -
its a 1 euro :1 dollar ratio for pricing in Europe. Actually UK has it better than the rest of Europe in that ratio is roughly about 3 pounds : 4 dollars
-
Your warranty is void off of the Z if you buy from newegg and a couple of other online retailer. I'm not sure about amazon. You can call sony and ask them if the place your buying from is an authorized dealer.
-
Hi guys,
As everyone knows, the Z can't be ordered with a blu-ray drive AND SSD (if I'm correct). Do you think it would be possible to put one of the new 128GB SSD's in afterwards if you order the blu-ray?
This one for instance? -
Your absolutely correct, and if I can aid to the DEFENSE of the Sony Vendor, he did say, "Though you can replace the sprint sim card with one in Europe, it will be COMPLICATED"
You even stated: that someone who is technically able can replace the module therefore allowing use of a European sim card, but would be very expensive.
Rhetorically, How was the Sony Vendor talking out of his orifice, when he just said it was COMPLEX and TECHNICAL and there was more to it than replacing the sim card (which Sony did not recommend)? You just happened to explain it more in detail than he did. -
I don't see why you can't install your own if they have 2.5 hdds in the laptop.
But I imagine it may take some effort to lift the keyboard to get to the harddrive. -
Thanks for the info.
But not even newegg?...I'm surprised.
btw, why do the laptops always cost a couple hundred dollars cheaper on online retailers like newegg and amazon than on sonystyle?
Also, how would sony know if I buy it off an unauthorized online seller? -
-
Who have already buy a new sony?
-
No Z at Sony stores here in the US either.
-
Does anyone know the cost of this extended battery or did anyone ordered it with their CTO'd Z?
When I was at the Sony Store here in California yesterday, the Sony Rep. did tell me if you CTO any laptop, you CANNOT return it and you CANNOT exchange it if something goes wrong. Though the warranty is in effect, you need to deal with these issues directly with the Sony Repair Center. There are reliability issues with CTO's.
Now if you buy preconfigured, you CAN exchange and you CAN return within their Return Policy Guidelines. Make sure you read their policies first before making that decision. So listen to Toronto-Guyy.
If your in the US, yes they will be available at the end of July.
I asked this question too, "why you can't have SSD and Blu-ray together, but they didn't know. I'm curious if anyone knows why that is. According to the Sony Style CTO, if it can be done, expect to pay almost $ $3500 with lower cost SSD. -
Yikes. I did not know that.
-
When that time comes and you need to contact Sony to repair your notebook, they will usually ask for a receipt to determine where it was bought and if the warranty still applies. Also when you register your notebook, they have information. And they can tell where your notebook was purchased from the serial number.
-
Which location did you go too? Sony Store in South Coast Plaza (California, USA) has the 1600x900 Z on display. I was just there last night.
-
Go to Computers->Accessories & Extras->VAIO PC Accessories->Input Devices and about 10 entries down is the Stylus.
-
Orlando. Dang, I used to live in Fountain Valley.
-
See Geeee.... it's a trend!

Fantastic thanks! -
Right. So let's clear up some FUD that I've been reading:
1) Sony will not void your warranty just because you buy from an unauthorized dealer like Newegg or Amazon
2) CTO notebooks are just as reliable as pre-configured ones. People are involved in both cases. That notion is pure FUD crap.
3) Sony's return policy on Sonystyle says nothing about CTOs being ineligible for return. That sales guy at the store was full of it and just wanted to sell his own stock...this is classic FUD.
So stop being snookered by this BS folks. Check it out for yourselves.

hey really sorry if you answered this already, but how did the higher resolution look on the Z? -
Good to know.
Oh, and Amazon is on the list. Yeah! -
I had nothing to compare it too. But in terms of text, the Z @1600 x 900 on display was small much like the TZ. As far as gaming, I can only speculate that it will be awesome. I think that's a given with this resolution. Like I said, It would be nice if someone in this forum can get their hands on one and see from their personal review and impressions. I'm very curious.
As for that CTO return policy, YES! check it out for yourselves, but I was told by Sony at A Sony Store (not newegg, or any other online site) that CTO's cannot be returned or exchanged. Sony Repair Center will deal with those issues directly. I guess if there's been several attempts on their part to fix that same problem, I'm almost sure this would be an exception. Here's the number at SonyStyle Store at South Coast Plaza and post if they tell you differently:

Is it possible to buy the Z without the wwan/sprint option?
-
I'm sure that's what you were told but if it's not in writing as an exception to their return policy on their website then they cannot deny a refund request (unless you trash the thing). Here is their policy:
Products must be returned in their original packaging. Shipping and handling is non-refundable. Issued RMAs are only valid for 30 days. You are responsible for and must prepay all shipping charges AND you shall assume all risk of loss or damage to the product while in transit to Sony. If you return your product to Sony (i) without a RMA from Sony, (ii) beyond the 30 day period, or (iii) without proper packaging, Sony retains the right to either refuse delivery of such a return or charge you a restocking fee.
Return Policy: Sony will issue a refund of purchase actually paid if the product was purchased directly from Sony, if a RMA has been obtained, and if the return is submitted during the 30 day period following shipment by Sony. Sony will not issue a refund on any CD or DVD that has been opened (taken out of its plastic wrap). Once the items are received back, credit will be processed to your original method of payment and will appear on your statement in 1 to 2 billing cycles. Please be aware that it may take as long as 90 days for the credit to be visible on your credit card statement. Sony processes the return within 7 days of receipt.
No mention of CTOs. Have you looked at the Sony Outlet on Sonystyle? There are tons of CTOs for sale. I am sure many of these are returns.
...and HP and Dell both accept CTO returns for full refund (I know...I just returned CTOs to both of them in the last 2 months). Sony isn't going to screw customers when the competition is so accomodating. -

My friend, I can say this as far as Candian site goes and ill find it for you. No returns on CTO's, why do i know this? Cuz I had a SZ780 and I had to write a letter to the President of Sony for me to get my return. I returned it cuz I had a screen defect, and EVEN then they refused to take it back. Hence why I wrote a letter to the President of Sony and they finalyy did it. Sorry I shoulda mentioned that myself. Anyways this is through first hand experience. -
Got his address handy -- just in case?
-
-=ToRoNtO-GuYY=- Notebook Evangelist
Im sorry, its actually: Customized VAIO® Notebooks will be subject to a restocking fee of up to 20%. Now note while they do say this, they can easily deny it if they feel its an invalid reason as they did to me. Even though it had a minor screen defect which u could clearly see. And to top it off I took it to the Sony Head Office located right beside me by the way
.

[email protected]. lol I would give it to you but then they would probably write me a letter saying: Dear valued customer, you son of a bitc... -
Oh, I was only kidding.
-
Did you notice if the Z's keyboard was any smaller than a standard keyboard in layout? I know the actual keys are smaller, but because the spacing between them is greater, I'm hoping this doesn't mean the Z's keyboard is cramped like the TZ, for example. If it is, then this would be really, really bad (I know many people including myself wouldn't buy the Z for this reason alone if so).
-
I don't know why he said that but I bought FZ CTO from SonyStyle online in California, used it for 3 weeks and decided that I don't like it, I returned it and got my full refund within 48 hours.
-
I hear you. I'm just posting what I was told. But based on a few of the posts, others have different experiences. Apparently, their return policy is not consistent. Let's just leave it that (lol). But I agree, get that exception in writing.
It's definitely a compromise of both the TZ and SR. If you remember the S Series, the layout was as comfortable as that model. The S Series was released prior to the SZ. And I believe the overall dimensions of the S is comprable to the Z. Anyway, the keyboard layout of the Z was very comfortable; nothing at all like the TZ.
Sony is strict....But you know what, I did return a wireless keyboard at the Los Angeles Store I bought after the 30 day policy, and they took it back. But when I tried to return it at another location, they said "No". I guess it just depends who you get. -
I've been referring to Sonystyle in US. Sorry to hear that sony.ca is so customer unfriendly. Bummer.
-
Yes, I have confirmed it.
I found this on eservice.sony.com:
"Sony Authorized Online Dealers are required to take steps to ensure the integrity of your sony purchase. Some unauthorized dealers have sold products with altered or obliterated serial numbers. Products with tampered serial numbers void the Sony Products Warranty." ( http://www.sonystyle.com/webapp/wcs...ogId=10551&langId=-1&cmsId=authorized_dealers)
If I read this correctly, it's saying that it doesn't matter where you bought your laptop, as long as it's got a valid serial number.
BTW, amazon is an authorized dealer. -
Sorry this is definitely off topic.
But what's a "rep power"? How do I gain more of it?
Thanks. -
It refers to the integrity of your statements that you post. If you can supply facts and/or replies to help resolve issues or answer technical-type questions that people actually benefit and gain from, they in return may give you 1 of their alloted rep. points that will be reflected under your username/avatar to let others know how credible you are. A monthly allotment is given out, but I'm not sure how much.
Bottom line: These points will display and indicate your reputation power (a.k.a "Rep. Power"). -
I guess I misread the choice of words you used to report his advice then
. A Sim Card is the little chip that you also have in your mobile/cell phone, that can be easily replaced when you change provider. It is very easy to replace in a laptop as well, as it is by definition accessible, to allow you to change provider easily, just like on a cell phone. But what you have to replace to make a US model work in Europe is the WWAN module (which will itself contain the sim card / be connected to the SIM card). So changing the SIM card doesn't require any technical ability, but it won't help make a US model work in Europe, hence my remark about your rep talking through his back orifice... So he was saying the same thing, but using the wrong words (unless they were lost in translation
). I thought it would be confusing for some readers and that's why I corrected it.
By the way I tried yesterday to give you one rep for your excellent post/review, but it doesn't seem to show up? I'm trying again today. Edit: I tried again but it says I can't give you rep on the same post twice... I have no idea why it doesn't show up. Or is it the green color? Can you check in your user CP if it registered? It looks like giving one rep doesn't mean the rep goes +1 automatically. -
The logical explanation would be that the salesman lied so you would buy from him and not from Sonystyle. But we all know salesman never lie
-
The Berlin Press Conference video was up at least two hours ago, in case anyone missed it. Dull in parts, especially towards the end but there's some interesting facts, such as the Z having twelve (!) layers of circuitry.

During that video, and u'l see this part, lol the DJ takes the laptop he drops it. Oh man thatd be funny. But harsh, yes harsh. not even a joke, shame on me.

Well im at the part where they show the SZ and the Z together, thank u soo much for posting this video, I really wanted to compare the 2. Cheers.

Does anyone know if the 128GB SSD Sony offers on the Z-models is 'value for money'? On this website http://www.lagoom.com/OCZ_128GB_Core_Series_SATA_II_2.5/OCZSSD2-1C128G/partinfo-id-583114.html a 128GB SSD is offered for $479.99, while Sony asks $1200 for the upgrade from a 5400rpm 320GB HDD to the 128GB SSD!!
Is the SSD that Sony offers much better quality wise?? -
Sony uses two 64GB SSDs in the machine to achieve 128GB of storage space, but Sony does use a horrendously overpriced SSD module in this case. I would probably not go for the SSD choices on sonystyle.
