I have a friend who has a 200gb Hitachi 7200rpm SATA notebook hard drive. How hard is it to open the laptop without leaving any marks/blemishes, and replace it with this drive?

I didn't realize that there were 1.8in 200GB HDs. Are you sure you have the right one for your notebook?

Its not difficult to open the case and you shouldn't leave any marks. I will post a link to the instruction right after I get back home.

The drive is plug and play, just connect the zif. Not sure which model you have. but unless you have the TZ198 which already come with a 2.5" HDD mounting cage, you need to buy additional hardwares

I plan to do this also - I have the TZ with no DVD drive and it currently has a 160Gb 5400rpm drive in it. I am seriously considering swapping in a Hitachi drive to get a performance boost...
One question though is whether or not the Hitachi drive has the same power consumption requirements to that of a slower drive...wondering if installing this drive would have an impact on the battery life...

The higher your HDD rpm is, the higher the power consumption.. Thats for sure.

I've been trying to find the power specs for the hard drives:

    the Hitachi drive
    Power Requirement +5 VDC (+ -5%)
    Startup (W, peak, max.) 5.5
    Seek (W, avg.) 2.6
    Read / Write (W, avg.) 2.3
    Performance idle (W, avg.) 2.0
    Active idle (W, avg.) 1.0
Low power idle (W, avg.) 0.8
    Standby (W, avg.) 0.25
    Sleep (W) 0.2

all ive been able to find for the toshiba drive that is in my laptop (160Gb version mk1637gsx):
    Allowable Voltage 5V ±5%
Power Consumption (TYP.) Low power idle 0.8W

not that much to compare against really as yet...
i dont think however that there will be a hug difference in battery life by putting in the 7200rom drive. Its even possible that the drive itself is more power efficient than the Toshiba...

TOSHIBA MK1637GSX is not one of those energy efficient 5200rpm. It peak around 3.4w and idle at 1.1w. Basically, your HDD only draw more power when its busy read or write.
