Well, the video looks pretty red, and that is through my orangegatish screen of S15 (so it should had look double-orange if it was filmed off orangegate screen)![]()
However if I check the Ferrari wallpaper directly on my screen, it kinda looks even deeper red.
However, I don't trust my eyes in cases like this.. Unless I have something solid to reference against, and that I don't.
-
, but to be honest, directly from my eyes it looks much more red than taking pics or videos.
-
Likewise, I think most if not all pictures we've seen in the thread are way more orange than the panel actually looks to the naked eye. -
I just received my laptop, and the screen does indeed have orangegate. Camparing the Ferrari and mspaint, all the reds have an orangish-red to it. Logos such as Adobe, look more orange than red.

Not fixed, and looks like is not going to be. Here is what I've received from Sony support:
"I understand your concern to regarding the orange gate issue with VAIO S series notebook. We apologize for the inconvenience. This is a limitation of the LCD used with this model. Currently there is no software or hardware solution available to address this issue."
For me, s15 is a nearly perfect laptop: 1080p, 15"6, matte, good keyboard layout with not crippled right shift and cursor keys.
Words fail me to express how frustrating it is - to this date, there has been no laptop made with such specs, and I don't really think it's impossible to achieve.
Sony, fix monitor, you'll get my money. -
-
It really is frustrating, if not for this problem, the S15 would be up there as one of the best Laptops at it's price point. Well... it already is so this would make it the best at it's price point but Sony don't seem to want to resolve an issue which HP have already fixed by simply buying the updated panel for their production line.
Is there no way to order the HP Envy panel which is meant to be fixed and installing it in the S15?
I guess we will know for sure in a few months if they really have fixed it or not. It does seem like some people are getting screens that can display 255 red correctly so maybe these updated panels just need to make it down the supply chain. -
The way for Sony properly to handle this mess is just simply agree it's a problem, and check each laptop before shipping. Lots of work, but that's what you do when you screw-up - you work extra to minimize impact.
As well, I'd be totally fine if they would have issued me some ticket, and I would need to call support *before* they ship the laptop to address this issue. I don't want to pay and wait for hell knows how long for the round trip that laptop is going to make to get fixed.
So, I hear HP fixed their laptop? is it Envy? I guess that's what I'm going to buy.
Finally, I think (100% speculations) what is going on is that some manufacturer screwed up panels, and now tries to get rid of them for cheap. At first they convinced HP to use them, HP got tired of servicing those laptops, so switched to proper ones. Now that manufacturer hooked up Sony.. Funny how Sony is willing to compromise nowadays - can't trust this brand anymore that when you buy their product you are going to get a quality item.
I almost want to buy and return those laptops just to prove the point. Iterate this many many times for as long as I'm getting orange IPS panel. Makes me wonder what would happen if Sony got a massive amount of returned laptops. -
-
So everyone agrees orange gate has not been fixed? Purchasing the S15 now will still have the orange gate issue?
-
-
You can breathe now, mine is a custom S151290S and has a Nov 2012 manufature date at the back.
I can cetifiy it is an Orangegate. -
-
-
It's dark red. In Paint it is 255,0,0. I have tested my S15 with my plasma tv. It's definitive not orange, like on other pictures.

So i make new pictures. I used this wallpaper. http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_2UbsSBz9c...uFM/s1600/ferrari-wallpapers_hd_1680x1050.jpg
The tv is a panasonic plasma tv. The tablet is an ipad 1. And the notebook is the s15.
Brightness is on every device setting to max. . I take the pictures with a galaxy s2.
And now don't tell me, my ipad und plasma tv have orangegate XD.
and here the same pics, with a sony smartphone.
and here s15 vs sgs2. Same wallpaper.
I think it's not the best red. But more red than the picture below.
and here is an orangegate picture from another post:
And if you tell me, i have an orangegate problem, i will send my notebook back and buy a win7 model for oc. -
Auto orange suggestion?
BTW, previous post is definitive. Again, congratulations draig. -

My CTO S15 just got delivered. I'll update this post with pictures once I get home from work.

Hello, first time here. My girlfriend just received her US-SVS151290X-LBOM-3 and the reds are pretty damned orange. I was hoping after reading this thread that it was fixed that she would receive a newer panel, but apparently not. Has anyone had any luck exchanging theirs?
-
Here's the comparison between my Sony (IPS), Asus Transformer Prime (IPS) and Asus (TN) screens. The TN appears to be the red-est but the two IPS screens actually show very similar "reds". The Sony is definitely more red than the people who posted images in the first few pages.
-
@MaddinAC:
That's the best test, the old one next to the new one.
It looks redder to me... so I guess they did fix it. -
Picking mine up from the mailbox today! Very exciting!
-
Did you get the fixed screen?
-
Still don't know. At work late tonight. Won't know for 4 more hours!!!!! Will update first thing in the morning. -
-
Somewhere I read that the HP Envy used to use the same screen. If the didn't change the manufacturer but instead the manufacturer now builds a better screen, it would make sense (for economical reasons) that Sony now gets the same fixed panel.
As other people still have the orange-gate issue it could be that they had still old displays in stock or that Sony has different manufacturers and not all of them get the same panels. -
-
maybe you should not compare it to a notebook display, because that often doesn't have an accurate red (too strong/dark)
-
I know the red on the right is not accurate, and i simply did that for photographic purposes. but regardless of the crappy screen on the right, my s series definitely tends towards orange. I work on colour calibrated monitors at work so am quite familiar with what red looks like. My s series red is orange. perhaps it's more red than the original displays on the s series? but it's still not red red.
-
Maybe it can add some light to the matter, I did not buy my non orange gate vaio from Sony but from a reseller (Acuista). Your Vaio comes from Sony online store? Are they selling orange gated from their shop but not from secondary sellers? -
Correct, I ordered mine online. So it was built in China after I placed my order and shipped to me. the sticker on the bottom says November... so apparently that means nothing. will check with the retail store here to see if they can handle a replacement for me.
-
Just received my new custom S 15 inch. I bought it online, and it shipped last week from China.
Mine definitely has the orange problem. Fairly drastic. I will probably send it back.
Netflix = orange
Ferrari wallpaper = orange
Paint = very orange
too bad. I will probably try to reorder on down the road.

Grrrrrrr... This is such a gamble. Oh maaaaannn!

There clearly seems to be a difference between some of the new displays and the old displays. Even taking camera settings into consideration you can clearly see from the image taken using a new batch S15 next to an old S15 that the new one is an improvement. However it seems not everyone is getting the new panels, maybe this is because there is still some old stock.
I don't know if it means anything but most of the images I have seen here of S15's with what seems to be a "fixed" screen are of the Silver S15. Bottom line is there is definitely some S15's being delivered with screens that can display a better red than the original orange-gate display, that's been shown by the comparison image of new vs old S15, the unfortunate thing is that at the moment it seems to be a lottery. -
I spoke with someone at Sony today. He said they are actually aware of the problem, but at this point, there is no fix for it. So sending it back to Sony in hopes of getting a new display is currently out of the question. Acknowledging that they are aware of it though is nice. Hopefully they are working on it and will have a new display before warranties run out. It sounded like there is no such thing as a non orange display at this point from Sony as they do not have a solution. So perhaps the people who are experiencing a redder red are just lucky to have an inconsistent product?

Just ordered the S15 from Amazon(it).
Will post photos as soon as I have it on my hands. -
Went to my local Sony and bought a new s15. My screen still had orangegate and all 3 display models had the same display.
So I returned it and got the windows 7 version instead so I can overclock.. -
Just bought a S15 at Sony.nl. Expected delivery approx. 17/18 december. Will let you know about the screen.

Hi all. First post here.
I ordered mine on 11/25/12 from Sony.com and still have the orange color issue. Mine has a build date of Nov 2012 and just received it custom built from china yesterday. I wonder if it coming with windows 7 was an indication of old stock. I don't see the point in posting pictures since you've all seen variations of them already. During browsing (including life pictures), I notice a slight red-orange but nothing near as "orange" as the 255,0,0 RGB in MS Paint. I use Lightroom to tweak vacation pictures but have never used color correction. So it would seem acceptable for daily use but for color-coded editing, I can see where this can be an issue.
I've looked at numerous laptops in the same class such as the Samsung 7, HP Envy line, Lenovo Y580 and W530. Every laptop has some issues that "prevent it from being perfect" I guess it's just which issue are you willing to live with (i.e. heat, display, build quality, weight). For a lightweight, daily use laptop with occasional gaming, this laptop was my top pick. I paid about $900 for it during Black Friday weekend so I'm still deciding whether or not to keep it but, for what I paid, I'm leaning towards to keeping it. Granted, I've only had it for 2 days, the orange-gate issue is annoying but not a deal breaker (for me at least).

The S15 model SVS1512Z1E which @Kiowa has with real reds is in Europe , so the S15 with new display models are released in Europe before the States !? I do not get it !?
-
I had to Pay 1150€ for the i7 version as a student, the normal price is 1300€ and that are 1700$In the Sony US store you can configure the same one and pay 1000$ :/
HP said that they fixed the screen in the new Envy Version. But it's not really HP who fixed it, it is LG who makes a new panel. As Sony and the HP Envy had the same panel before, I wouldn't be astonished if Sony gets the new Version of that Panel, too. But the people from the "nice" Sony Support don't know anything about that, rofl
