That light flickering can be stopped. I had the same problem. It was extremely annoying. In the vaio control center somewhere, there is a setting to turn off auto brightness. This will stop the monitor from adjusting to tiny variations in brightness as the shadow of your head moves around or when a new window opens on screen exposing more light to the sensor. I can't remember exactly where the setting is in there, but do some digging, you'll find it.

Yes - please provide screenshots - and where did you purchase yours from ?
BTW, I am in Canada, and I contacted Sony regarding the orange-gate issue.
They sent my email to their CTO dept for an answer.
Specifically I asked them to confirm if they are now using a newer IPS panel that does not have Red-reproduction issues. -
I received my refurbished SVS151190X with the orange-gate issue on Tuesday. Today I had a technician come to my home and replace the panel but to no avail same orange gate issue. Now my options are to either send my unit to the Loredo Texas repair facility or just return it. I don't have any faith in the repair facility so I will be just returning the unit. -
Wow, you are so lucky that you can (return) it.
In Canada we can only (exchange) it - and only if there is a defect.
No refunds. -
Bought two last week, one from Tiger Direct, the other from Amazon.

The difference is not as stark in person, but it is noticeable. -
Returned both Vaio's due to this issue.
-
My thoguht's exactly
We can't even exchange it for something else, just get a repair if there is a defect
That said - how da fak did Sony not get a class action suit in every country by now regarding this issue?? -
Bought two new S15's, one from Tiger Direct, one from Amazon last week. Both have bad orange-gate. -
I've just ordered one of these from Sony store online.
i7 3632QM
GTX 640M LE 2GB
320GB HDD
8GB RAM
And took advantage of the free blu-ray writer which is currently on offer.
The main reason I went with this laptop is for the 1080p IPS display.
Soon as I receive it (should be within 2 weeks time) I'll update you all as to whether there is any issues with this orange gate. -
I ordered a refurbished S15 (customized 1290x) from Sony last month, and it had the orange-gate issue. Sony agreed to let me send it in to see if they could change the LCD. They said they couldn't find any issue so they sent it back to me!
I'm just going to return it. What a waste of time! At least I got them to cover return shipping! -
I saw the new T15.5 series over the weekend (looks like the replacement for the S15) and it seems like OrangeGate is not an issue on any of the machines I saw.
I find it interesting they call it an Ultrabook when it's still almost as thick as my S15. Nice to have a touchscreen though. -
It's not an IPS panel, though.
I'm waiting for an IPS with proper reds. -
I recently bought a white S 15" refurbished from the Sony Outlet. It came with windows 7 and a 1/2013 MFD. Happy to say it does display reds properly. I also hit 1000/1000 on the video card using the bios mod. Really happy with this laptop right now for the price (35% off coupon used).
-
So, it's completely casual...
-
A 2013 build with Win 7? That's really odd.
-
I bought one for myself last fall and followed it up with two more for my kids at Christmas.
These have been the best non-apple notebook I have purchased. That includes to the 50-60 notebooks I reviewed here in the old days. -
No orangegate?

When people say "no orange gate", I'd like to see an actual photo proving this. It's pretty easy to do.
-
Who are you referring to?

Afternoon all.
I have received my laptop now and just quickly tested out the orange gate issue..
NONE!
-
Crazy! Where did you order this, and when?
Thanks. -
ordered it through the Sony website - it was a customer order and had to be built for me.
-
Hmm...I just looked at it again, and it does appear to have Orange Gate.
But the only thing that matters is if you are happy. -
Why do you say that? I'm interested in this laptop but only if this problem has been resolved.

Orange VAIO S15 SVS1513C5E
The difference in real life is much worse than this picture. Coupled with that my screen has a yellow wash over everything white. I rang the technical team and they are not aware of any "orange" problems relating to the device. This was a custom online new order. I'm getting a refund straight away. You have been warned.
-
Quite strange, I have 2012 model 1511C5E while you're using 1513C5E which should be orange-gate-free. How is it possible that they haven't fixed it yet? The same problem with orange-gate occurs in HP dv7 laptops with TruBrite FullHD screens.
-
I was lied to by a Sony sales representative at the time of purchase, who said the problems had been "fixed". Obviously it's the LG hardware that is at fault. Not sure why I have a yellow/orange tint over everything. Even pure yellow displays as a bit orange. Must be something to do with whatever customised colour settings they have injected into the VAIO bloatware.
-
Well, apparently I have a bit of orangegate but it doesn't bother me at all. In fact I bought Dell UltraSharp monitor which I use side by side and although Dell is generally a more vibrant panel, I don't really mind which one I am using for non-visuals related work, or for that matter, entertainment.
-
i have SVS1513C5E too but my red are perfect, no orange gate here, maybe they mounted 2 different type of monitor in the last model?
-
Damn, and I thought orange-gate was definately out of the question with the new models. I shall see what Sony brings me in about a week.
-
It's better than what other people have been suffering yes, but I plan to use Photoshop. I was forced into a refund by virtue of the fact that all the whites (Like Youtube, Facebook and this websites background) were yellow. Along with the hilarious amount of bloatware I just couldn't be bothered. The technical team were less than useless.
-
I'm planning on buying this laptop, but this issue concerns me a bit. However, I have access to a monitor calibrator (and software). Has anyone tried to calibrate their monitor (obviously only a software calibration, assuming that the display does not support hardware LUT calibration)? Or is this issue so bad that it is actually a hardware defect?
-
The orange gate is fixed for the new models. Just make sure you buy one that's from 2013 (check the processor model with intel's site).
-
That's the thing though, I'm looking at a SVS1512 since I'm saving a couple of hundreds and it is has the same specifications.
-
I wouldn't go for it. If it doesn't have a processor from 2013 (check with intel's site) and it doesn't come with windows 8 then it might suffer from the orange-gate. This is not the only problem with the 2012 model BTW.
-
Really? That's too bad. I'll probably pass on this one then. Unfortunately the 2013 model is priced too high (swedish prices for these computers are way expensive).
-
I'm going to contradict myself but you could buy it if you really like it and see if it has problems. Sony's return policy is pretty good (30 days). If the notebook does indeed have the orange-gate and the fan problem/whirring noise you can send it back.
-
I don't have the time or energy to deal with returns, already done that with Dell monitors a couple of times
Thanks a lot for the information, I might go for an Asus NV56 instead. -
Thanks for posting the picture, Gallatin.
I was thinking about buying from Amazon exactly the same model you bought and returned. But then the picture you posted gave me the pause. Maybe I should go to the local Sony outlet store to check out how bad it really is since everyone's perception of color accuracy may vary. But from the picture it looks bad to me.
The tradeoff between the orange-gate issue and the overall package this machine provides is something I have to consider as well. After searching a while, it's hard to find a machine that can match this one in terms of display, portability, and performance. And also I forgot to add the extended battery life by adding a thin battery sheet at the bottom.
I've see success stories of ppl ordering directly from Sony online store. Maybe I should give that a try. -
Be very careful about doing this. I bought a laptop with bad orangegate from B&H photo and was unable to return because it didn't have an issue and this is not out of spec according to Sony. I called Sony and they said the same thing that because it was working just fine (apparently they are color blind), they wouldn't return it. I'm not sure if it would have been different if I bought directly from Sony, but be VERY careful about buying from third parties as you will probably get stuck with it.
-
Anyone purchase a new s15 recently that can comment on if this has been fixed?
-
I bought a white S15 from Sony Store CTO on 29th April (delivered 14th May). Can confirm that it does not have orange gate.
S15 Orange-gate fixed?
