Thanks a lot james007bond for your help.
I tried your way and i couldn't get it to work. I tried both of the drivers, there are two listed - TCP Schema 0/02 and they both have two folders, one with service and one without it. It was probably down to me.
I then though figured how to install it using the 64bit driver that you can download from the Sony website.
I mentioned before that i had four unknown devices after i installed this driver. I had to use the same driver to upgrade the unknown devices and when i did this it worked.
I will try a few of the connection software and see which one i feel is the best.
Edited to add:
So i'm using the smart network drivers most latest drivers for the SZ7 EU models that you can get from the updated drivers page on the Sony website. I'm also using the above Option drivers that i stated. This is the driver. http://dls.update.sony.net/pub/oth/64/EP0000144650.zip.
I'm also using the 2XXXX connection software that you mentioned james007bond. I have tested my wwan and it is all working ok.
-
Well another 2 steps forward I guess....
It's just so bizzare that we have jump through so many hoops to get things working..... I'm onto the bluetooth next, just downloaded the original driver from the Vaio site.... Will give it a go and report back.... tally ho... -
sounds like im having the same three problems. Brightness works after a fresh boot but when i wake up from sleep/hibernate it stops working right. It shows up, beeps and i can move it down 2 bars but nothing happens. Does that help at all?
None of the OS settings seems to affect it either. um volume keys, s1, s2, stamina/speed all work. oh the w))/L)) fn key before the mute key doesnt. doesnt matter as much but i do use it once in a while to toggle bluetooth.
Other then the green light, my camera worked fine off of leslieann's original work up without any specific webcam drivers/anything. This was on 64bit and gtalk.
the fan is louder then it was on vista or xp. Im pretty sure it goes through the up and downs according to temperature, but is louder in general.
as for bluetooth, file transfer with my phone worked fine, bt headset paired but did bring up some issues. my headset never worked well on vista so i didnt bother trying.
Not sure what your bt issue is but id be glad to help test with whatever i have laying around. I dont have much spare time to screw around too much with drivers, but id be glad to test a few out for you guys -
hi,
i need some help with the vgp-vcc7 cam. Step 10 is not working with my SZ61.
1) I download "Updated 64bit camera driver pack"
2) Install these 2 drivers in the device manager. Now i have 3 with the usb device.
3) Make a cold start (shut down)
4) And switch to the other driver
Something wrong? Because nothing happens? -
This is great. Following your links, I got Win7 x64 running on VGN SZ791N with camera and TI controller both working! Thank you!
-
For the fingerprint reader after sleep/hibernate Ive changed various settings with no improvement.
One thing I have noticed:
If the log in screen includes the term "fingerprint login" it will work, if not it will not.
I have no idea what thats telling us, but it seems consistent. -
I've got a VGN-SZ660N and I use the internal Novatel EVDO WWAN modem to connect to Sprint.
Has anyone been able to get SmartWi to work on Windows 7 64 bit?
If I boot into Vista, turn on the WWAN, then reboot into Windows 7 I can create a dialup network connection using the Novatel EVDO modem by dialing #777 with no username and password. The problem is that without SmartWi I can't toggle the power to the WWAN, WLAN (WiFi), and Bluetooth cards. So I don't really even need SmartWi, I just need to be able to toggle these devices power. -
Guys, has anyone got the Firewire port to work?
I've just installed videostudio 11 and plugged in my DV camcoreder (SONY) and nothing..... Nothing even in the Device Manager... zippoo.... -
Got an optional update for the upek fingerprint reader from WU today, seems to have fixed the fingerprint log-on from sleep/hibernate.
If I can find a fire wire device around here I'll give that a try... -
Re the firewire problem, it seems that The Texas Instruments OHCI compliant IEEE1394 driver is not installed.... I checked my other Vista SZ and I need driver version 6.0.6001.18000...
-
OK, found the solution.....
I uninstalled the IEEE1394 whilst my DV camcorder was attached to the firewireport... Did a rescan and voilia the Sony Camcorder appeared in the device manager.... all is fine... so far....fingers crossed -
My SZ seems really quite quiet now. It has really settled.
My TT has 64bit Vista business which is what it shipped with. Sony though left out their own webcam software.
Just a note about W7 i hate the way that they left out Windows Mail and Movie maker. I dislike the Windows live mail and downloading software online like this.
Also, i hate what they did with Paint. They took away some good functions. -
Which settings exactly did you change to bring the fan down?
-
I have an SSD drive which is one of the most power efficient type that you can get so i have an advantage in that area anyway when it comes to noise.
I also a few months ago replaced the thermal compound in my laptop with
ICD7 which is arguably the best thermal compound you can get and it improved my temps over what i was getting with Artic 5.
My temps idle in the low to mid 20s and the highest temp is locked at 33C.
With an SSD i automatically turn of indexing so my computer wasn't going through that.
However, as i wrote before after changing my adapter settings for my wireless card i noticed a change. I changed the transmit power setting to medium low. Roaming Aggressiveness is set to medium and AD Hoc power management is set to maximum power saver settings. It took for the next day for things to really settle though and now it is pretty much quiet.
I run my computer in power saver as i mentioned and CPU setting number 4 or 5, i often change it back on forth when on power.
I'm also now using the PI and FP that you can download from Windows Update.
This is everything i have installed on my computerAttached Files:

Does anyone have experience installing 64-bit on an older system? I have an SZ4, and a lot of these drivers don't seem to want to install. Sorry if I missed a post about this.
-
A good first step is to see if anyone has done it with Vista64, that will make it more simple. Most of the drivers are usable in Win7.
-
Take a look here for some links to some possible helpful threads.

I've been runnig W7 now on my laptop I guess for the last 3 weeks.. System is stable, i still have that quirk with the brightness settings that seem to stop working after the computer goes to sleep..... It's really annoying.... A reboot fixes it... I'm wondering if something is powered down and does not come back when the computer is woken up...?
I'm thinking now..... was there any point in spending £'s on W7 pro when Vista Ultimate did the same? What have we gained from W7? Yes the aero looks nice, but what radical change has their been from Vista to W7?
Answers on a postcard please.....
-
Performance and...performance
. It's rather obvious they didn't change a lot of things (visually speaking) but they managed to build a faster OS compared to Vista (what is really not that difficult
).
-
Maybe i'll add an extra 2gb of ram and see what difference 4gb makes....?
With a T9300 processor, my SZ71 should chug along quite nicely....... I expect? -
If you don't use the 4GB you have then you won't benefit from ram and it will not improve your performance. You will though have a pretty maxed out SZ.
If you don't really require anymore ram the best upgrade is a SSD drive. Also, i have read and i think seen some small tests on here that pointed to the conclusion that an increase in ram past 2GB will lead to a small decrease in battery life in some circumstances. Again i think that depends on if you are short of ram etc. I think more tests need to be conducted to see if there is really any truth in this.
Vista was perfectly ok for me, i never found it slow.
I just hope this laptop remains stable over the coming months when i start writing my diss. -
The extra memory is tricky.
More ram helps cut down processor time, so it balances out for the most part. It depends on your usage.
However, decreasing the number of sticks, should increase battery life. How much is the question. If it is measured in single digit minutes I will gladly trade it for the added memory when needed.
Could make for an interesting experiment. It would be interesting to see how two 1gig sticks compete against a single 2gig, or two 2gig sticks compete against a single 4gig in terms of battery life. -
I did. Right now I'm running a crippled Win 7 32-bit with 4gigs of ram. Frankly, I didn't see much difference since it uses only 3 gigs.
I'm gathering up some courage to try to repeat the remarkable work leslieann did installing the 64-bit version. -
Well folks, today I took the brave step and vaped the hardrive... I've just restored my Win7x64 image and now i'm gonna retrace my steps and see if I can get a 100% working build from scratch based on all the knowledge we have gained in this thread... Fingers crossed...

hey guys. im working on doing a clean install of windows 7 32bit on my sz680. the problem i am running into is when i try to install the various sony setups (notebook utlities, shared libarary). i keep getting a prompt that says "this was not intended for your model" or "this is intended to be used with windows vista". any idea of a work around? any help is appreciated.
-
Did you try compatibility mode and tell it that it is a Vista computer?
-
that's weird. I've installed myself with no problems on a SZ650. Are you using the utilities downloaded from the sony ftp repository?
-
I've gone back to Vista Ultimate 32bit again. I was not happy with my decrease in battery life which was about 20-25mins. The rate of discharge seemed to be faster as well so the difference could have ended up being more. Also, despite my best efforts having used this for several days Vista Ultimate is actually still a bit more quiet. So whilst i worked on improving things Vista still has the edge in that regards.
This has consumed a lot of my time then to just revert back to my original OS is not making the best use of my time.
I mentioned before that i also do not like what they have done with some apps and how they have removed others.
W7 is a little faster though. For me the timed difference comes down to 1 or 2 secs at the most.
I may buy the 32bit version and give that a go. I may also if i decide to put W7 on my TT that has got specially written drivers for W7 and decide to keep Vista on my SZ. I don't know though for sure and we shall see.
James007bond why did you wipe your OS again, what was not stable? -
THANK YOU GUYS FOR ALL THE GOOD JOB YOU ARE DOING!
i am from greece so be tolerant to my english
i believe that i should let you know that i have done the clean install with windows 7 (64 bit ) ultimate version to my (below specs)
most of it worked ok , just working status
control center, sony utilities, sony center and finger print not worked ( wrong version)
but i dont mind , however, anyone with a sz6 series have managed to make it work? would be welcomed to provide a hint.
moreover using the drivers for alps pointing ( not worked) but i have found a driver that worked excellent from hp site, therefore i provide the link so you can try it.

maybe it can help someone
p.s my next laptop will definitely WONT be vaio (fed up with their attitude towards premium "priced" laptops)
sony vaio sz650n/c
4 gigs ram ddr2
ocz vertex hdd (firmware 1.30)
all others as factory -
Yes, I have a SZ61WN and everything works
-
I did some testing with AHCI and different drives.
Before changing your drive, keep in mind that the stock Fujitsu drive peaks out the non-AHCI connection, so unless you enable AHCI, changing drives will do little unless you go with an SSD which has a near instantaneous access time. Even those drives are hampered by no AHCI.
I haven't tested it, but apparently the non-AHCI Sata port on this notebook is limited to a speed of about 50megs per second (according to another user). It jumps to at least 80Mbps with AHCI, however the stock drive is only capable of around 55Mbps. So enabling it will do pretty much nothing if you have the stock drive.
Fujitsu 250gig: (factory equipped drive)
Sequential read speed: 55MBps, tapering down to 27MBps
Random Access Time: 18.4ms
CPU Utilization: 4%
Average read speed: 43.3MBps
Burst speed: 113.2MBps
Seagate 500gig: (ripped from a Seagate Free Agent Go external drive)
Sequential read speed: 82MBps, tapering down to 40MBps (improved)
Random Access Time: 18.3ms (improved) but possibly just a matter of test tolerances
CPU Utilization: 2% (improved)
Average read speed: 65.6MBps (improved)
Burst speed: 117.8MBps (improved) -
thanks for everybodys help. i managed to get the majority of everything working.
i tested the function keys early on in the install and they worked fine. as the day progressed and i started installing more programs, they've suddenly stopped working. any clues as to what i need to install to get them functioning again? -
Hi all,
I've read through this topic with some interest as I have recently Upgraded my
UK Vaio SZ61WN/C to windows 7 x64
Everything has gone very smoothly,
except that I am having some issues with getting Vaio Smart Network to work in any way with it.
Does anyone know for definite if there are a combination of drivers that work?
I have tried the latest Z series drivers, which are designed for 7. The laptop installs them as you would expect, but I still get a blank Vaio Smart Network window, with no options to enable the devices.
To be quite honest, once wwan is enabled I won't need the utility anymore as I will just disable the devices directly through 7 when they are not in use, but it is VERY frustrating not being able to even enable the card to install drivers.
Is it possible to just permanently enable it in the bios (much in the same way as we enable VT technology?) -
Tigs77uk
If you haven't read the SZ6 W7 thread you might want to have a read of that also. I have got smart network working properly on a SZ7 but our models may not take exactly the same drivers.
I suggest that you have a read of this thread and in particular posts 128 and 129.

Re-install the two drivers back to original Sony firmware parser driver or whatever it is called.
I had this same problem yesterday. Apparently the new driver conflicts with something. It looks like the old one needs to be installed while something is installed. After everything is settled it can be updated again. -
hey, first of all i just want to thank you all for this fantastic guide! I experienced a couple of problems i wanted to share:
I have a SZ-791N/X and i installed WIN7 Ultimate x64
-The Mouse device does not scroll on internet pages as it was doing originally, i don't know if i need a specific driver for that...
- In the Device manager, i cannot find the CAMERA to update the driver as it is written in the 10th point
Thank you! -
You need Alps touchpad for the scroll.
As for the Camera, look for the Image device -
I did install the Alps but still doesn't scroll, and for the camera in the image device there was only 1 usb thing and i installed the VCC7 but still doesn't work...
-
Since the driver for the camera is not the right signed driver, you have to install it manually.
For the Alps, check if you have these:
-
Rachel,
I'm using my laptop as a sandbox instance at the moment, so i'm chuking software at it to see how it reascts.... Up on till today it was stable.... I got 2 BSODS.... oh my God....!!! not sure what the problem was.... funnily enough, I'm suspecting those 2 Sony updates in the Windows update.....
What's interesting to note is that Adobe Premiere CS4 seems to slow down the laptop for shut down... no idea why? Also i've noticed, on some occasions, upon shut down, I see a ghost screen which says something like.. "waiting for background tasks to shutdown"
My microphone does not work and i'm unable to install the Sigamtel drivers... the laptop is stuck on the Microsoft High Def Audio driver....so that's my next port of call....
Oh, anyone using Nivida drivers other than the 1940 ones? Do your fn keys for brightness work after the laptop is woken up after sleep?
Overall opinion: Was the £spent on the W7 upgrade worth it... in short.. NO (still can't see the benefits yet...) -
Try this for the Alps driver:
ftp://ftp.vaio-link.com/PUB/VAIO/ORIGINAL/POINTING_DRIVER_ALPS_7.202B_64_7.202.505.108.ZIP
For the Nvidia driver, I use the old one of Vista -
If you haven't done so, read the microphone section in the guide, it defaults to the microphone port.
My brightness works always.
CS4 loads a "service" on startup, which needs to be unloaded at shutdown. It's listed in MSconfig, I'm not sure if it is required or not though, I haven't had a chance to test it. -
Ok, i got the mouse FINALLY WORKING! THANK YOU...
....... but still the webcam does not!!! What should i do? -
Hi all,
I had upgraded my Vaio SZ750 few weeks ago, almost drivers in Satamina mod as Fn+volume, brightness..... seems working good, but Windows couldn't detect NVIDIA 8400GS card ( In Speed mod ). What can I do now?
-
tyfn, the information you need is in the first post...good luck!
-
Has anyone determined which Nvidia driver is the best for playing HD video? I'm trying to find one that will output to a secondary monitor @ 1920x1080 while smoothly deinterlacing 1080i material on that monitor. Most of the drivers I've tried have given me problems. The integrated Intel GPU is more stable when trying to do this but does not do a good job of deinterlacing 1080i material on that high an output resolution.
Thanks! -
Nvidia: Did u download also the .inf file? because u gotta substitute it in the folder and then install the driver through the device manager... i had the same problem..
-
Oh, well done !
Very simple that read leslieann's 1st post carefully and install his driver pack -Thanks leslieann and all
