Hi, Download the original Nvidia drivers from sony site for SZ650N. Switch mode to speed and install it, that should solve your problem. Then there is an update to it in that same list of drivers, install that. After all this installs, goto this post's 1st page and download the Nvidia registry hack for SZ750 from sony site. Extract this file using universalextractor program and then just install the registry file in that folder and thats it....u r done. Thnx.

Well, my upgrade went almost perfect and i decided to make clean install. It went much easier than I thought, may be because i was installing 32 bit version.
However, there some things don't work properly. Today i noticed that Fn buttons after hibernation stop showing on screen messages, it can control brightness etc, but nothing is shown on screen.
For some reason, i could only install original version of some utilities, that came with laptop, not updated ones that you get from vaio update (and which i suppose are better)...
For example, there is newer version of camera utility for my SZ4 in vaio update, which fixes some isssues with synk, but it can't be installed, only original that came with laptop
Also, same with wireless swithing utility, i could only install original one, not the updated one..
But, i choose to install one from SZ7, 'vaio smart network' which is much better and faster than version for SZ4, why didn't Sony include it as an update for older SZs if it works?...Unlike version for SZ4, it switches blutooth and wifi on and off instantly..

Also, i think that my battery life is little worse now.. But not sure yet..

Mine has developed a rather annoying habit of occasionally having a reversed touch pad when booting or waking up...

I now carry a bluetooth mouse everywhere... :)

Can we install a DDR3 Ram on SZ650N....as I have 2 GB DDR2 Ram installed and now I want to increase it to 3GB DDR3 is it possible ?. What about a combination of DDR 2 and DDR 3.

You cannot insert DDR3 Sodimm to DDR2 Sodimm socket. They have same form factor but DDR3 Sodimm have 4 additional pins. They are also keyed differently to prevent insertion into DDR2 sockets.

Windows 7 by default hides unused drive icons.
Put something in and it will show up.

Can someone tell me where is the access for the Memory Stick Duo? In Windows XP, it's listed in "My Computer" together with all the drives.

It is there, it will just be a generic icon though. Mine also seems to turn it off if you just leave a MS in there. Pop it out and back in and it will show back up.

I started reading a bunch of the posts but came to realize that 32 pages of posts was a little much to go through. I am hoping that you guys can help me out.

I have a SZ750n with Vista Business 32bit, I have recently prematurely purchased the Windows 7 Professional 32bit version through the student purchase program. I opted to get the disc from Microsoft and haven't tried installing it because of fears of getting everything working (especially the webcam and microphone which will be used often). Is it possible to get windows 7 working correctly and is there somewhere where everything is spelled out and easy to follow?

Also, has anybody attempted the track-pad fix that is noted in these pages? It drives me nuts.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, I love my computer it just never seems to work properly :'(.

32 bit should be no problem. I previously had mine working 100% with RC 32bit. The Vista drivers all work, once you set the properties to Vista compatibility mode.

I just installed windows 7 pro 32bit on my sz750n. The only real problem i seem to be having is with the function keys. I'm pretty sure somebody has posted in here before regarding this issue but I can't seem to find it. Any help would be awesome.

    Thanks.

The Volume controls and the mute button are working but don't display it on the screen and the brightness controls don't work at all. Also, I can't seem to locate an updated driver for the track pad (all the links I've found say that there is not a current updated driver for download).

    Thanks for the help.

I have a SZ770N/C and it has the VCC7 camera, In my quest for a working driver I installed the fujitsu driver and when i shutdown my computer the camera stopped working. I can live with it like this for now, just wondering if anyone has found a fix, Leslieann, I would also like to thank you for your guide, it helped me out alot and got my machine running win 7 64-bit like a champ.

    You're welcome. :)
I think there is a driver that gets the light working, but it has issues. You will need to re-read the thread to find it. I don't recommend it though, as it is just a pain.

If you want to make sure it's off, make a shortcut to device manager and disable it there. This way you know it's not being used.

Open Control Panel, make sure you are using small icons, then simply drag "device manager" onto the desktop.

I was wondering if anyone tried to use his/her SZ with Windows 7 without vaio power management?
I did, and i think i saw no difference.. My SZ4 works only around 3 hours (+/- 10 minutes) with or without VPM...And i have new battery..

I checked my cousin's freshly bought new Vaio with windows 7 preinstalled. It has newer version of VMP 4., and there is no fan speed control, and some other settings that are in VPM for SZ are missing as well.
It only allows you to de activate firewire and i link ports... Can't even turn dvd off.. May be Windows 7 has some built in features and can replace vpm ?
    What do you think?

By the way, i noticed something strange, when i go to hibernation with VPM installed, my SZ fans starts to work really loud, untill laptop turns off.
When i go to hibernation without VPM installed, it goes to hibernation much quieter...
I also noticed that until you install VPM, there is a windows option of "PCI' in power saving settings, and you can switch in which mode it works, when you install VPM, it dissappears..

    Thx leslieann..
I'm kinda at ends with Sony right now...
I have upgraded a slew of laptops, net-books and tablet pc's to Win 7.
When even Gateway has better Win 7 support then Sony, it tells me something.
your how too best i found so far.. and working links, that's always a nice addition. :D

I completely understand about Sony. If they didn't make such nice stuff, and there were other alternatives I would have moved on years ago, but if you want a well built, small laptop, they still hold the high ground.

I ran for a short time without VPM and didn't really notice anything in particular but I wasn't really looking for anything. I put it in more out of the fact that I am putting the rest of the things in, I may as well. Plus I like the fact that I can get it so close to a factory installation which was my goal of all of this.

For your battery times, keep in mind, some SZ's came with higher capacity batteries. With 100% charge, I can realistically get 5+ hours if I am careful with power management. Older SZ's had a lower capacity.

I'm not sure why the fans kick on to shut down or hibernate, possibly to counter heat soak (after a system shuts off, the heat inside migrates out and (without cooling) can create a temperature spike, this happens on cars as well). It could also just be power management going to sleep, and Windows woudl have better control over how it reacts when going to sleep than a system designed for Vista years ago.

It woudl not surprise me if Win7 offers some new features for power management, possibly set to do things automatically.

Well, i do have standart 57 720 mW battery.... But i read some people claim to have 4 hours and even a bit more on this battery, i have no idea how they achive it...

    I found this article
    http://www.ithinkdiff.com/different-new-power-saving-options-in-windows-7
Before i install vpm i have pci express option in power saving settings, just like in this picture, BUT right after i install vpm this option dissapears..
May be this option conflicts with VPM...?

Also, if you install newer versions of VPM, which are disigned for windows 7,
that option with 'system cooling policy' like in picture below dissapears as well.. It isn't presented on my cousin's Vaio as well...
Also, they talk about ahci hard drive power management settings, that are available for sata hdds, my hdd seems to be sata, but those options pictured in that article never appeared for me...

Anyway, it would be just great if Sony would release updated and fully Windows 7 compatible version of VPM for SZ's... I feel that Windows 7 advantages are not used for 100% when using old VPM designed for Vista on our machines..

The SZ series has AHCI disabled by default in bios and no option to enable. You have to use a bios hack to enable it.

You are correct, we aren't getting the full benefit, but I wouldn't hold my breath for Sony's help.

    WOW!
I'm not sure if I should jump for joy or facepalm.

For those checking it, make sure to check the various sections as some things, like the PXE driver are located in different sections than they used to.

Has anyone tried any of these "new" drivers? Particularly those for the camera and notebook control and utilities.

The two things that don't work absolutely 100% are the S2 button for brightness and camera's red light (as has been discussed).

I'm fine with that but if anyone finds that any of these fix those issues please report! (I'm reluctant for fear of making it worse...)

They are not new drivers, just new applications certified by Sony to run on Windows x64. As a matter of fact, no new drivers released in any of the packages. The webcam application for example, will not initiate the webcam without the proper windows driver loaded and running. So you still have to follow the guide to get things running first.

I have it running using the Guide  so I won't mess with any of these unless someone finds that they some how address on of the two minor issues.

By the way, will the methods work for SZ 491N as well?

I wonder if all these troubles are worth a wait. Maybe the Windows 7 is not what it crack up to be.

Try the Alps driver from the Z790, that will fix the scroll.
    http://esupport.sony.com/US/perl/swu-download.pl?mdl=VGNZ790&upd_id=4377&os_id=36

As for the buttons, re-install the utilities. Be careful of the wording as re-installing some will actually un-install. Something didn't go in right.

Yes, the only questionable part anymore really is the webcam and there are several posts on getting most or all of them to work.

Windows 7 beta was as stable as WinXp and Vista. The retail version is even better. It's rock solid and and fast. I refuse to go back to Vista or XP.

    Hi folks,
    I haven't visit this topic for a while ..
Looks like this will help my vaio sz780 to fully work after all.
I'm just afraid to try it again.
Last time I took like 3 days to put it to work and come back to vista again !
    :S
Is the Hard Drive security device working ? The Fn Keys ? The Camera and the cards device as well ?

    Cheers,

    Fábio

P.S. (I'm seriously thinking to try ubuntu instead of win 7.)

Hi, I wanted to know whether i can install 4gb (2x2) DDR2 800mhz memory on my sz650, though i know that 32bit Os will recognize only 3gig. I just wanted to know that can I go for 800mhz memory or sz650 can only support upto 667mhz. I read on a post that sz650 can take 800mhz memory...is it true.

If you wait a bit I will update the guide, however, if you use the guide, then work backwards from the newest post back you can find the latest on the mouse and camera.

Everything works on the 750 (except maybe the WWAN, which some may have working). So you should be able to get everything working as well.

FN keys work and HD security has worked from day one of the guide.
The Camera was the biggest holdout.

Rumor is that you can put 6 or 8 even, I have yet to test it though as it's quite expensive.

The memory will downclock if necessary. It will not hurt to put faster in it, but you may pay a little extra. Will it run at 800? I'm not sure, but it will run.

    Tks a Lo Leslieann.

    I'll do it pretty soon.

Other thing, I have two partitions on my hard drive. 1/2 Win Vista (haven't install the win 7 back again .. yet) and 1/2 Ubuntu 9.10.

I'm planning to have both OS's at my vaio, and I'm going to create a post soon to detail the ubuntu 9.10. so in a Vaio SZ7xx.

Believe me, some vaio library's can be adapt to use in Ubuntu, also the performance .. wow !! Something to make you loose your hair !!

    Cheers,

    Fábio

    Ubuntu runs great on these.
I didn't really see a big difference between Win7 and Ubuntu though. Keep in mind I have some changes in my notebook and have more than a few tweaks I do with Windows to speed it up.

My main issue with it is work, I deal with 100% windows boxes and have to stay up on what is going on. I could go full time Linux at this point, but it would be detrimental to my job and I HATE dual booting.

I'm 100% windows too at work, but i'm falling in love with linux day after day !
I realize that many of the applications I've being working has Linux versions and linux support. Linux also have good VM's and WINE as well (to support use the applciations that has no support at linux)
I do have some changes at my vaio as well (is a 500gb 7200rpm HD with 4GB DDR2 800mhz Ram memory).
Are your camera working 100% in win 7? I had the wwan working on the time I was using win6 64bits.
