It should work pretty darn close.
The only real questions seem to be centered around the webcam, which appears less of a problem now, and if you have the wireless Wan. Everything else should run just peachy.![]()

Thanks Leslieann, I'll try to clean install my VAIO this weekend.
Hope everything going smooth...

Hi Leslieann et al,
I'm trying to install W7 64 on my SZ71WN, it went reasonably well especially after reading the last 25pages and install guide.
Funniliy enough I never had any issues with the webcam, there is a post for a TZ build and that driver works a treat for an SZ as well. (I had a TZ and ran W7-64 with no problems at all)
BUT... here it comes:
- Even though I follow leslieann's guide I still don't get the FN keys to work, same for the S1&2 buttons
- I don't get the message when switching to stamina mode or to Speed
- When the notebook has been in Sleep for a while the mouse doesn't respond anymore
Any suggestions? I checked the SZ71 thread but that one just links back to here...
Hope one of you can 'sort' me out here...

Read the first post section labeled "First off, some basic info. "
You need to install:
Event Services, Setting Utility Series, Sony® Shared Library, Nvidia Registry Patch
As well as the two Sony drivers (IO and PFC or whatever it is called). -
Thanks Leslieann,
done that yesterday already but either done something wrong (two kids under the age of 6 have some effects on my capacity to concentrate...) or my SZ71 hates me... Seems to run faster now though, especially since switching the pagefile off
I guess I'll just try it again... D'oh
Cheers

Hello mates!!
I'm a french guy and wanna thx you for your great post!!
I've got a VAIO SZ72MN (It' a UK model) .. with WINDOWS SEVEN 64Bits..
Thx to you everything is working now..
My webcam is working too using... the "64bit James007bond's unsigned driver" (except the green led but i don't give a )
My webcam is working with MESSENGER and VAIO CAMERA CAPTURE UTILITY.
All my FN keys are working too. (S1 and S2 button working too..)
have no WWAN.. so no problem ! lol
The only thing is the battery care function.. which is in double like you said ..
(i'm pretty sure there is a way to fix that..i have an idea i will try it after)
I add some stuff.. like the wireless switch utility to choose wetween wifi or bluetooth.. i found a version which is working on the SZ72. (Wireless Switch Setting Utility 3.6 -3.6.00.18210)
I'm using another drivers for the ALPS pointing device. .(Pointing Driver (Alps) 7.0N - 7.202.505.108) and it's working perfectly.
So for my part except the GREEN LIGHT ...it's a 100% clean X64 install !
I didn't try the camera in stamina mode..
That's my news.
I think SZ72MN and SZ750 are very similar model except the WWAN. (SANTAROSA PLATFORM, VCC7 RICOH camera ..blablabla..)
Hope it will help somebody..
Have a nice night!
-
Thanks Leslieann,
So - third new install of Win 7 64bit and thanks to you 99.9% work so I must have done something wrong last time. I'm still using the ricoh cam driver from the TZ thread, and it works in all modes straight away.
So whats not working?
- even though Nvidia patch applied brightness FN doesn't adjust in power mode- although the screen display comes on. No problems whatsoever in stamina mode.
Any ideas how to fix this last bug in power mode?
Cheers
V -
You're all welcome.
Volks, I can only think of two things that will cause your issue.
The first is that the Nvidia driver has not properly loaded, check device manager to make sure it isn't stuck with a generic video card driver. The other possibility is the registry patch messed up, you may need to re-apply it in Vista compatibility or admin mode. -
ok i found the way to have no double for the battery care..
It's very easy.
You just have to copy the files of the working one "battery care" and overwrite on the "unworking one".
Then just uninstall the working to delete the double.
So the unworking one become a working one!
Cheers! -
Just a quick note...
My laptop decided to update something today and came out of standby. Unfortunately at the time, the exhaust port was blocked. It ran this way for almost 4 hours before I found it. this is not the first time it has done this. The problem is that this time it blocked that port.
When I found it, it would not respond. Worse, when reset, the screen didn't come on at all, the drive spun up then froze and the stamina and speed indicators did not illuminate. I let it cool and still no response.
A bios reset did however fix the issue and it is fine.
If this happens to you, don't panic right away (like I did). One thing I have noticed with Sony's over the years is that the bios reset or battery replacement solves many things.
Oh, and if you upgrade to an Intel 5300, make sure it is not an HP or Lenovo locked, and expect a bit of static when you use it. It won't hurt anything, and shuffling the antenna may quiet it to tolerable levels, but it will make some noise. Also, once you do, Win7 will not allow you to go back to the 4965AGN, you will get constant blue screen unless you reload it or find a way to unload the drivers. -
Hey Guys I have already posted before my problems: I have a SZ791N/X and I can't manage to get the Webcam working and i am on win7 ultimate 64BIT. Now i tell you what my situation is: i just cancelled everydriver from the device manager because the one i was using were not working. I tried already 10 times, so if somebody would be so gentle to send me the right files and tell me exactly what to do it would be great. I give you also my email to send me the right file [email protected]
THANK YOU -
I've successfully installed Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit on my SZ75GN, and I've followed step1-11 already. But I cannot run the BIOS Update Program Ver.R0122S5. It keeps saying "WBFLASH: Cannot read the system information". Anybody experience this problem? Can I actually update BIOS in Windows 7 64bit?
-
I don't think you can do it in 64bit, much less Win7.
-
I tried using WinXP Portable to upgrade the BIOS (BIOS Update Program Ver.R0122S5). I still couldn't do it, still "WBFLASH: Cannot read the system information". Why this happen? Thanks.
-
I think maybe because it has no HD to work from.
-
I got my sz660n fully working today with windows 7 x64, after several days of trying and testing! WWAN is not working (the light turns on, but nothing happens) but I really have no use for it so it's no big deal). As a tribute to leslieann, rachel, james007bond, amro (from the sz680 thread) and many others who have spent their time working on what Sony should have done in the first place, I will attempt to post the steps here.
Preparation:
Look up the thread for vaio sz and vista x64. Download the driver from there
Go to sony support website, download
Sony shared library
Vaio control center
Notebook control
Install universal extractor and extract the sony setting utils, vaio event services, and vaio power management from the notebook control file.
Other driver or software are either from the vista x64 file, or from the web. They are not hard to find.
Now, let’s do it:
0. Switch mode to stamina
1. Install windows 7 x64
2. Run windows updates (after this, you will only have 1 unknown device, “mass storage manager”. It is the Texas Instruments Media Car reader. Driver is in the original post)
3. Install Sigmatel 6.10.5614.0
4. Camera (install the driver from www.ralphg.com/public) and the webcam companion 2 software (no green light, but it is 100% functional, no drop even after cold boot)
5. Toshiba bluetooth (optional)
6. Switch from stamina to speed mode and install Nvidia 179.28 (vista x64) driver (works fine in windows 7 x64)
7. Install protector suite
8. Install Utilities:
a. Sony Shared library (download from sony, under sz780)
b. Vaio control center (download from sony, under sz780)
c. Vaio event services (extract from notebook control, download from sony, under sz780)
d. Setting utils series(extract from notebook control, download from sony, under sz780)
No need to install hd protection since it is already included in this
As far as batter care functions, just install the one that came with sz6 (extract from “notebook control file” for sz660n). Then copy the two files, “batterycare.exe” and “battery care.dll” to the setting utilities folder:
\Program file(x86)\sony\setting utility series
And overwrite the two files that already in there.
After that, uninstall the battery care from program files, now you will only have one icon for battery care function
e. Vaio power management(extract from notebook control, download from sony, under sz780)
f. Smart network
Lesliean, feel free to use the information from this post to update your original post if you like.
PS: how do you use the WWAN for GPS purpose? Do you need an account with the phone carriers? -
@Maverick Enigma
OT:
i have read your old posts in thread "How to Enable Intel VT and AHCI on a Napa/Santa Rosa platform Phoenix BIOS Vaio laptop"
you have tried to change the active strip of the fan by modding the bios. did you have any success?
thx
sorry for the bad english - my german is better
-
The GPS works, but it also doesn't.
Here is how I got the GPS to work, intermittently on the SZ750N.
First you need Win7 32bit.
You need to install the Sprint Smart utility from the Sony Site. This enables the card and disables the normal wireless. This utility is NOT win7 64bit compatible and crashes it completely, at least it did for me
Last you need the latest Sprint connection utility from Sprint.
As mentioned it is very inconsistent, but you use the Smart utility to start the wiwan. Start your mapping software, I was using Streets And trips 2010, then using the Sprint connection software, enable the GPS then search for the gps. This part takes some fiddling around and usually it will not stay running. Good in a pinch I guess if you absolutely needed a gps location.
If you are lucky you will get a signal once in a while and it was as far as I got before I became disappointed with win 32bit. 64bit just runs better for me.
If someone wants to take it from here, they are more than welcome to. I dug deep enough into my laptop last night to remove the sprint card entirely so I can't do any further testing on this.
Maverick, I plan on updating the guide (with new driver pack sand all)as I just reloaded my system with some updates mentioned here, so yes, some things will change. Thanks for figuring out the files needed for Battery Care. I was planning to upload the entire folder contents, now it will be smaller. Thanks
-
Hi Tas:
I was trying that for awhile with no success. There must be something else that needs to be changed for it to work. I now have upgraded my CPU to a T9300, which runs about 15C cooler (45nn tech rocks), so there is no need to mod the bios any more.
RMclock also help it lower a few degrees. -
Thanks leslieann for explaining how to work the GPS. I have a dedicated GPS, but I think it's kinda cool to have this as a backup GPS
. One quick question though, do you have to sign up with Sprint for this to work? I remember when I was using SmartWi on vista/xp 32, it always ask me to activate it. I always canceled it out because I thought that might mean signing contract with Sprint.
I am searching for SmartWi x64 right now, if there such thing exists
-
Never mind, i got it
-
oh - thats a pitty. i have running RMclock to. I have an SZ31XWP (compare to US SZ370P i think). It has the 945GM Chipset so i think i cant use a 45nm CPU. run yor SZ now under 42 degree so the fan is of?
thank you - and greetings from germany. -
I just successfully updated SZ75GN bios with BIOS Update Program Ver.R0122S5. Before, I couldn't update the bios, because I directly run the EP0000149537.exe file. It should be manually extracted (using Universal Extractor or Winrar) and then run the WinPhlash under WinXP or Vista 32-bit.
I also tried the Nvidia new driver, v195.62 and it is running perfectly. I copied the modified inf file to the driver folder fisrt. Thanks James007bond for this info.
As for webcam, I think the best driver is 64bit James007bond's unsigned driver. It lets the webcam run in both, Vaio Camera Capture Utility and Yahoo Messenger. -
Yeah, I know. BTW, i forgot to mention that the one I was trying mod the bios for was the sz491nx, and the one I have right now is sz660n. Yes, the T9300 idles at 32-34C so the fan is rarely turn on. on top of that, I think the sz6 serie has a better heatsink. I open my up when I upgrade the CPU and saw an extra heatsink at the back of the laptop, corresponding to the intel GPU on the top! After my fail attemp at modding the BIOS for the sz491nx, I did a few other ghetto mod to it:
1. I got a big CPU heatsink and cut it into smaller pieces and use thermal glue to glue it to the metal piece that holds the CPU down.
2. I use thermal tape to connect the top heatsink part (GPU heatsink) and the bottom (CPU heatsink). Sony does that in the SZ6 by adding that extra heatsink.
3. Remove the plastic under the key board (don't remove the whole plastic piece, just cut a square) right where it sit on top of the GPU. The put a thermal tap in the spot that the plastic was remove. That way, the keyboard will act as a heat sink for the GPU.
After that mod, the fan rarely go on any more! By typing this to you know, I remember the reason why I abadon the bios mod, lol. I figured out that it's not just the CPU's temp, but also the GPU's temp could trigger the fan. And I don't know where is the registry that control the GPU's temp sensor.
Anyway, my sz491nx works great after the ghetto mod, lol. I sold it to a friend and it is still working good for him! -
Yes, the GPU temp can activate the fan.
Those are some interesting mods, I may do the gpu/keyboard trick myself.
Did the battery life change with the T9300? -
For those looking for the Alps driver that works and has scrolling, I finally found it again.
Use the driver from the VGN-FW490JGB
http://esupport.sony.com/US/perl/swu-list.pl?mdl=VGNFW490JGB
Be sure to pick from 64 or 32bit versions. -
didn't read through this entire thread so this might have been answered, but:
If I have Vista 32-bit, in order to go to Windows 7 64-bit I need to get the full version, the upgrade won't work. Am I right? -
ok - thx, i will also try to increase the cooling by adding a heatsink in the next days. next week i have already to open the sz for ultimate tuning:
160GB Intel X25-M G2 Postville -
You cannot upgrade a 32bit operating system to 64bit.
-
I have not booted in speed mode in a while and remember it being the same or slightly higher than stamina, but mine is 3.1 in stamina.
-
Yes, I think it's supposed to be higher in Speed Mode. But Mine ony 2.8. I tried the latest NVidia Driver v195.62. It didn't help, either. Did I do something wrong?
-
I'll give it a try in a while.
It is the "gaming" graphics that drag mine down though, its also a different model (US SZ791N) and all the power management settings are not stock so it may not be directly comparable. -
Here are the numbers in stamina with power mode set to "high performance".
-
Thanks Robert...
Would you mind refreshing the index in SPEED mode? I'm eager to know the result. -
Already on it
Again, Speed mode and "high performance".
Both were on AC power as well.
-
Wow... Thanks...
Both the same NVidia 8400M GS, but the result is extremely different in SPEED Mode. While in STAMINA mode, all seem the same. Here are the both results, both running in High Performance Power Option.
I'm still curious with 2.8 result...???
Why is it so bad?
SPEED MODE

Graphics NVIDIA GeForce 8400M GS 2,8 <<<< ???

2.8 is correct depending on the driver you used.
From page7/post 64
Stamina mode (windows update driver):
32bit graphics 3.5 / gaming 3.1
64bit graphics 3.5 / gaming 3.1
Speed mode

32bit graphics 2.8 / gaming 3.4 (2 year old driver)
64bit graphics 2.9 / gaming 5.3 (190.4)
64bit graphics 3.5 / gaming 4.1 (2 year old driver) -
Thanks leslieann...
I'm on v195.62 x64 though, a little difference in Graphics 2.8 vs 2.9
You've answered my curiosity.
-
The 2.8-2.9 difference could be variances due to manufacturing, some revisions, or it could just be within tolerance and they are borderline on which number to give. Or just something in the background.
I run the newer drive since the whole point of using that card is for "gaming" and not normal computing. Even then, I rarely use anything but the Intel. -
I am not trying to hijack this thread...
Recently installed Windows 7 Pro 64 bit on a Sony VGN-SZ491N - the install went well, I had do do a few modifications to the latest Nvidia driver (as per http://www.sevenforums.com/graphic-cards/33633-sony-vaio-nvidia-drivers.html) and it worked well.
I have not had any success with the built in Webcam. It appears to be a VGP-VCC5 I am able to install the VCC5, 6 and 7 drivers from Sony but none of them do anything at all.
Any suggestions?
Regards,
Matt -
Have you tried: 64bit James007bond's unsigned driver. (1st page on this thread)
It works like a charm in my SZ75. -
Hi, I have a SZ650N and have installed Windows 7 ultimate on it. Everything is working well. Only problem is that after going into hibernating mode when we start again....the brightness keys don't function and also if you go into power options and try to change from there, then too it doesnt change. Everything works well after a Restart or Shutdown. Also Vaio Power Management doesn't seem to list all power options it only list what windows 7 has built in options...viz..Balanced/High performance/Power Saver. I can see the Vaio power options in the More power Options windows but can't open them with Vaio Power Management. Now I have uninstalled the Vaio Power Management and now I have all the power options including the Vaio ones and can use at will. Anybody has this problem.....neways main problem is the hibernating issue.
-
Have you installed the Sony Nvidia Driver Registry Patch. My SZ75GN, never had this problem. Brightness keys are functioning normally after hibernating.
-
Hi, thnx for the reply, but the registry patch for NVidia is not intended for my model (SZ650N), I tried installing the patch which was for SZ750 but it said that its not intended for your model.
-
There supposedly is a tool that lets you pull apart the drivers, you may see about that and pull the .reg file out that way.
-
Hi, Thanks for that, I extracted the Nvidia Reg hack for SZ750 and now instld the reg file in my SZ650 and evrythin's OK. No more brightness probs. Thnx guys for all the help. Evrything's perfect now.
-
hi, i have sz650n with w7, but i can't install nvidia drivers.
Message from windows :
"The Nvidia setup program could not locate any drivers that compatible with your current hardware"
i hope got solutions in this forum, thanks before.. -
.inf from where?

Read the first post it tells how to get the video drivers that work.
