I know. Sony ignores the SL and SP processors and has never offered them as far as I know. Although I'm trying to figure where that would fit in their line.
-
I cannot afford the SSD models, so I am very happy to see the tiny 1.8" hard drives are now at 5400rpm speed instead of the standard 4200rpm, this makes for a noticeable speed difference.
I am also happy at it going up to 4gb of ram, having a Duraview matte screen like the Z and HDMI out.
I don't think they will use them. Sony hasn't used the previous low voltage processors (eg. Core 2 Duo L7500) in their notebooks, only regular and ultra low voltage.
With the SL, SP processors, they could make maybe a slimmer Z, something between the Z and TT. -
I think user Geee from the Z owners thread said that in Sony store they told him that is coming very soon a new Z model with this 2x128 GB RAID+ blu-ray. Well, it make sense now that the small TT is going to have this features.
-
Meh, it always happens after I order
-
SSD = too rich for my blood
The Z520 I ordered is the same price as the upgrade for the SSD RAID option for the Z590! -
That's my point. Sony would need to find a slot in their already large line for 'em. The lower end Z is not too badly priced, and the SR is right behind it and offers great value. Offering a lower spec'd Z cheaper or the same as the SR pricing doesn't make sense.
-
i'm half asleep but i'm assuming there is no official release of info?
it all seems vague - and very expensive
-
As for price, again, I'd be shocked if the top end TT was any less than $4999 US given the top end Z is $3999.
-
Rahul, you wrote that the TT will have a matte screen. In many ways I prefer the TZ screen ("non-matte" or what it is called). Can you elaborate more on the difference? And will non-matte screen be an option for the TT?
-
ohh NOOOO there is NO white
i'm truly devastated now
-
I am not sure. The Vaio Z has a Duraview screen which I have seen in person and has a matte finish on it unlike the TZ. Its not a bad thing, it was not dull like many other matte screens. The screen was still fantastic, it had the benefits of a glossy screen like rich colors but with a matte coating.
Since the TT is also listed as having this screen, I assume its also a matte finish. It will be even better than the TZ's screen but will also be easier to view in indoor and outdoor light and will get less dirty.
-
Sony hasn't offered a white notebook in the T line at least in the US in quite some time. I don't remember if Sony's even offered it on the T in Japan in recent memory.
-
The TZ was announced in Japan in May 2007 and did not get the white and green color options until the first refresh in Japan in September 07 and is still offered there.
It was offered in the U.S in late 2007 in one model (TZ185N/WC) but was quickly discontinued. One problem was its price, it had a regular HDD but was closer in price to the SSD models. It cost hundreds of dollars over the other models identical to its specs, I have no idea why.
We did have the previous TX series in white from the very beginning all the way till it was discontinued. -
Rahul, you are a Sony VAIO guru!!
-
Ok so now we know the specs. Where are the pictures?
-
Interesting. I'm guessing making the carbon white was an expensive process
I haven't followed every variation of the T line since I lost some interest with the TZ line.
To me, as much as it's come in different colors, I still asociate white with the T line due to the TR. -
thanks Rahul
i know the white is available here in australia, though its always been one set of specs lower than the other colours i.e U7600 instead of U7700. not sure on pricing but seems to be about the same. edit: definantly did not cost more to my knowledge...
i will need to check again when i'm actually awake (should be in bed but something woke me up and i just had to check if there was any news
) but at the moment i can't see why i would choose this over the TZ. but maybe japan will do a white one again (i'm guessing asia/australia like the white more than the US?)
-
Actually, who ever decided on its price in the U.S was a complete idiot. In Japan where you can CTO the TZ (many more options than the U.S), the white, champange gold and black colors are part of the base price. The red, premium carbon and green colors though are 5000 yen ($50) extra.
So why they charged $300 more for us Americans to get that color is beyond me! No wonder it was quickly discontinued and not brought back.
I'm sure the white color will be available again, when the TT is refreshed in a few months, you will see extra colors available just like white wasn't available for the TZ at first but it came in a few months. Its too bad in places like Korea and Australia, the white color is only on the low end models.
Its nice in Japan you have full flexibility to order your Vaio laptop. You can get the white model with an SSD there but other regions if you want a TZ with SSD, your stuck with the premium carbon lid finish.
On the SonyStyle Japan site, you can give input on the Vaios, what features and colors you want in a refresh, etc.

In Europe its even worst than in USA, so dont be so hard on sony USA.
I guess that Japan market is more big than USA and they can CTO without big costs... -
The TZ white was a beautiful thing. It would have been my choice of TZ had I the money and the inclination to get one back when. I referred to it as the "Stormtrooper" model, with it's shiny white exterior with black accents. **** it was nice.
-
I was being sarcastic. Sony is usually pretty good - at least in Japan - about what is standard and what isn't standard. I think part of the reason it is the way it is can be attributed to how Japan is. It's a very competitive market.
If anyone ever gets the chance to go laptop shopping in Japan, I recommend the experience. It was fun going to places like Yodobashi and seeing what only importers can get (or don't bother). There were even some non-Sony ultraportables I only saw in pictures that were nice to see up close like the LaVie G type J. -
Nixon our beloved friend,
Where are the pics? Is it significantly different from the TZ? -
When is the official annoucement going to take place... I've been waiting so anxiously!
-
Is there any mention of backlit keyboard?
-
Since there are no updates - a quick question:
How much more than price listed on Conics do I have to pay when ordering to US? I mean taxes, customs, etc. except shipping fee of course
Thanks for the info.
-
HMmmMmM TT or Z?
-
The topic is about TT so...
-
This is the question!
I was hoping that the TT is going to be ugly without SSD, blu-ray..etc so I can easily pull the trigger for the Z.
No pics yet?
-ghrh You don't pay anything else except these that you said above. No extra taxes for US. -
After using the Z for a few days, that 1600X900 screen really got me. I'm sure I'll have hard time to step back to my TZ screen when I get it back from Sony.
Compare in weight, Z and TT are very close. TT will give more battery life for sure. I'll pick the Z with 1600 X 900 screen otherwise I'd pick TT since the Nvidia graph card is more like a bonus than needed for me. -
So even though in store one has to pay stupid taxes (not written on the price tag), when ordering from Japan - no tax?
-
The specs have exceeded my wildest expectations for the new TT. I am amazed Sony cramped all this technology into a subnote.
-
Yea, for $5,000 I would like a lot of technology too!
But with the base model getting a 160GB/5400rpm drive, now we have a truly useful base configuration! But where are those pix?
-
I was told via sony that the new TT series will ship Mid-October. Sorry if this is not new news but I just found out
-
Two things I am most curious about (more than how much storage there is, as I don't think people who are looking at this laptop are concerned with putting 100s of GBs of data on to this thing):
1. Design
2. Battery Life
Can't wait to see what comes out within the next couple of days! -
I agree! And hope (and think) that Rahul is right when he thinks that a WHITE TT model will come, just like the white TZ, which came after a few months.
As for the status for Rahul as SONY GURU, I completely agree! Where in the world does he get so much information?! -
Maybe he works for Sony?
-
I think its rather someone he knows who does.
-
For those who obsess over such size comparisons, here's a maximum height comparo for some possible competitors:
http://www.sizeasy.com/page/size_co...4200-vs-ThinkPad-x200s-4-Cell-vs-Sony-VAIO-TT -
Hm. Looks like tomorrow.
-
I just typed in Vaio TT into Google, and when a site held any information, the pictures were either of a TZ or the new TT looks like a TZ.
Someone mentioned that there may be a change of name due to the recal.
Now there are some quetions - how long is a series generally around, has the TZ satisfied that critetria? (I think it was on the market shorter than the SZ)
Would it make sense to rename a "lookwise" 90 to 100% identical Vaio? -
I believe the new design, that is used in almost all new sony vaios, was first introduced with TZ, so I dont expect anything big to happen with the new TT design.
-
I think it maybe just a slightly style change from TZ - TT. When looking at T and TX, they do look very similar. Sony usually do slightly renew of VAIO every season and then there's something new every year.
By the way, the SZ was a legend. It stayed on the market for 2 years. -
I wouldn't be surprised if the high end configuration may run somewhere north at $3999....
-
Dell E4200
-
^lol, no kidding.
High end Z is $4k, the high end TT could easily be $5k -
Gee, I wonder who said this back in #108 (and earlier, just mentioned $5k)
-
I agree.
The Z with 128GB SSD, no blu-ray is already $4k.
The TT? 256GB SSD AND blu-ray. The extra 128GB is about $800, and the blu-ray is $500-600? It can easily fetch over $5k. -
Ever since Sony started putting SSD drives in their notebooks, they have been pushing the price up. We used to think that a TR at $2,200 was a ton of money, then:
Sony TZ with 32GB SSD: $3,200
Sony TZ with 128GB SSD: $4,000
Sony TZ with 256GB SSDs and Blu-ray: $5,000+
-
The financial market calls it growth.
-
thank you for this link! great idea to be able to comment, will have to keep an eye on it
so i see no pictures yet - maybe it is just a TZ re-fresh so they don't see the point?
sony insider mentions something about secrecy until october 1st as well.
i've looked at the specs again and besides the 5400 rpm HDD there is nothing here in the refresh that is of significant interest to me over the TZ. (maybe the matte (?) screen but i like the TZ screen well enough.) which for my needs is what i expected.
also i don't expect the TT will filter through to australia until very late october at least, maybe even november? so i will need to call the store this week and see if the TZ will drop in price again.
