I never like black with silver trim on anything, so I must say the black TT is a step-backward for me compared to TZ. And add a bright red upper case on top of that? What on earth are you thinking, Sony?
On the other hand, the champagne gold, while having some "mainstream" look (AKA cheap), looks real nice -- easpecially the fact that Sony actually bothers to change the bottom to champagne gold as well, I really like it (I hate black bottom with any color top cover other than black). I think the silver trim will go very well with other light colors, such as the violet in the old, old, old VAIOs from the 2000 era.So, please, Sony, give me a violet TT!!!

Is it me or is much more thick that the TZ? I suppose they increase the size so they can put all these features inside. First impression? So and so...Now that I see the full pics in engadget (specially the last one of the gallery) I like it more. I like the corners of the screen that they are not so sharp. The idea of the silver doesn't convince so much...But guys, the specs are really great!
-
oh so only two models in australia, not counting the high end SSD one. and the lower models only have 120G not 160... that.....that is just wrong Sony....
i must say i'm a little disappointed and i don't like the silver strip from what i can see of it. -
I think the black is sexy and I like the design. Problem is the overt colours: gold? red?
Also, as was seen with the Z, don't judge til you see it. AND, at least the premium carbon finish lives on!

Interestingly the curved shape into the "power barrel" is more true to some of the original VAIO design concept drawings (in one of those Japanese VAIO engineer interviews) than is the TZ.
I feel stupid for not trying to get the UCHI tickets from Giz AU, was to lazy to send an entry - and here I am in Sydney following the TT thread, with the UCHI event today, after nixon told us the TT unveiling would be today, and I didn't connect the dots...Attached Files:

I've been waiting for this laptop for over a year now, so I'm really glad they finally put it out and with very decent specs too.
At first glance, I too was a bit disappointed at the case. The TZ never looked that great in photos, but every time I see it in person at a store it catches my eye with it's elegant slim shape. I've been comparing photos of the two and although they share the same sized screens, aside from the keyboard, trackpad and click buttons, quite alot has changed.
The new TT is starting to grow on me. It has smoother flowing lines that make it look a bit sleeker. The chrome bits don't bother me. I hope it will look even better in person.
The only thing it's missing is that backlit keyboard; that would make it perfect. This machine has a BluRay drive and 16:9 screen for watching movies - I don't think it's strictly for business types. Even so, if you don't like/need it, you can always turn it off...but it would have been nice to have the option. -
Major disappointment if it doesn't have a backlit keyboard.
To those people saying "high end business men don't need a backlit keyboard cause they only use it in the office and the boardroom", seriously, what planet are you on?
How many high end business men need to burn blu rays? How many of them need hdmi output? Have you heard of versitility? Yes the T series have generally been marketed as a high end business model, but they are still designed to be extremely versitile laptops. The more features the better, that's what makes a good product.
High end business men will NEVER want to use it in the dark? High end business men NEVER take their laptops home and use them in the lounge or bedroom at night with the light off? If the T series was actually designed for the extremey limited applications and situations that you seem to think it is, it would be a pretty crap product.
The idea that 99% of the market for the TZ is high end business men is ridiculous anyway, I highly doubt that would be an accurate statistic.
I have a TZ, I'm not a high end businessman, and I use the laptop in bed quite often. Yes I can touch type if I'm sitting in a typing position, but if I'm lounged on my side watching a movie or surfing the web one handed, I don't always know where every key is. Particularly the volume and brightness keys, I can't press them without looking at the keyboard. I always have to crank the screen brightness to full so that I can see the keyboard. Backlit keyboard would be awesome.
Sorry for the rant, but seriously... back lit keyboard is a gimmick because the T series is for high end businessmen who only use it in boardrooms... come on... -
Is it me or are these more expensive than when the TZ came out?
-
I would have gone ahead & ordered a red TT if its LCD bezel is not red. However, the champagne gold TT looks good to me & this new TT model is really tempting with Sony finally using 5,400 rpm 1.8" HDD instead of 4,200 rpm speeds.
By the way, the inclusion of noise-cancelling headphones in the package is pretty interesting. -
I can't get over the TT moniker. It's funny because TT or T.T is used in Japan as the "crying" emoticon.
The overall design is pretty nice although I think a white or silver colored version would look even better. -
that red TT looks hideous! is the TT even designed by the team from Sony Japan? kinda hard to believe.....
-
yah wheres the white one and thank god they got rid of the glossy finish on the keyboard that was the most annoying feature on the TZ
-
If it was all black I was sold for the premium carbon model. The silver details make me think...Or also the aluminium of the Z it could be great on the TT. For sure this lappy will fly with the 2x128 RAID SSD.
-
thats too rich for my blood capt jack sparrow
-
lol DanyBui81,
If you were blowed away from the first picture like you were with the TZ, you would find the premium for purchasing it. Seriously now, I think I am leading towards the Z. Like you said there is something that doesn't feel right in the design of the TT. -
Glad to see I am not the only one who thinks this is worse than the TZ regarding looks. The crimson red model is extremely garish. I also dislike the silver accents on the side and especially mouse buttons, what the hell!? It just looks quite tacky to me.
Why did you remove the previous multimedia playback buttons on the T/TX/TZ now especially when it has HDMI out and Blu-Ray playback options????
I expected the TZ's replacement to wow me in looks but Sony finally managed to make the T series ugly to me.
I also find it hard to believe eddieaus, that Sony Japan designed this.
I was thinking before if I was to get a Vaio again as my next notebook, it would be a TT or Z. Looks like its just the Z now. -
the key to beauty is simplicity the TZ was simple and sexy the TT is saying its trying to hard with the silver accents only thing I like is no more glossy keyboard. Im leaning towards the Z unless the TT can get 10 Hrs battery life with the standard battery. If not this will look like the only T series I have yet to own. Ill probably purchase a Z and a Asus N10 as my ultraportable with suppose 12hrs of battery life =P
-
oh no, more (ugly) photos of TT series:
http://www.pcauthority.com.au/News/123510,sony-vaio-tt-breakthrough-ultralight-bluray-notebook.aspx -
I don't know why they couldn't make the black TT all black like the TZ and instead ruining with with the silver side-trim and mouse buttons. It only looks decent on the champagne gold color in my opinion.
And that red color is so bright and garish, nothing like the champagne red color on the TZ line that looked beautiful IMO.
They have messed up the outside in looks but I am quite happy with their internal changes, like the screen which is Duraview and 100% color accuracy like the Z. The TZ's screen is around 78% and it blows away most other notebooks in colors. I like finally having a 1.8" 5400rpm drive and HDMI out as well. -
-
I was wondering can we use this
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231202
and max out the ram to 8Gigs? that would be a heck of a laptop -
I don't know why but for some reason when I looked at this part of the TT it reminds of the clie PEG-UX...

I think i need to see the TT in real life but from the pictures i have seen i think the red and the gold one look cheap and the red one is particularly bad and garish looking.
The black one is a bit better but i not sure about the silver accents. It is the best one out of the lot i feel though. I have seen the TZ in real life and i thought that it looked better in pictures so who knows what i will think about the TT.
I do think that the TT is slightly overweight for it is when compared with the Z. If you can get a laptop 2" bigger with a similar design for only .4 more in weight then that makes the TT look a bit overweight. One of my previous laptops i owned was 4.35lbs and my current one is 3.95lbs and really the weight difference does not make any difference to me. This TT should be about 2.6lbs.
It is good though the specs are decent. Battery life that waits to be seen but the x301 Lenovo seems to have no advantage battery life life when compared to some notebooks with T or P processors today. -
I dunno about you guys, but the curves and the colours (especially with the chrome accents) just screams "consumer" and "designer" laptop to me.
This doesn't look like a business notebook at all.... and the clean lines of the TZ had been destroyed as well. The curves on the hinges looks out of place.
I'm curious what it looks like in real life. -
Come on guys is not so ugly!
In my opinion is better looking that the TZ (not the red one), the silver details gives diversity, the all-black laptop sooner or later you get bored of it. But if you compare the price and what you get, TT against Z....Well, there is no doubt, the Z wins.
-
The TT however, with the additional colours, chrome accents, and curves, just make it more of a consumer notebook. In fact, I think of the NR series (which is an entry level model) when I first saw the pics. -
From the Press Release:
-
Its not up at SonyStyle Japan yet, I wonder how they will react to this model. I am let down for sure. Z all the way! -
my god, just look at it, what a sl*t! whoever designed this red TT needs to be slapped on the face.
-
Dual Channel SSD .... hmmm, doesn't sound logical to me, but maybe someone who knows more could actually say whether it is possible or not.
Duke2007 once pointed out that Sony was making a lot of mistakes on its websites a little while back.
I'm wondering if market pressure is reducing quality.
I mean, why do they release an update every 3 months? Because else some small group is going to screem that their products are outdated.
Laptops should be updated less often, but then with true upgrades.
Or reflect an upgrade in the name. (add a letter for faster CPU or bigger HDD)
To the "looks cheap", true, my SZ looks better. -
The old TZ was a thing of beauty... such a shame. -
-
^^^ Yeah, that is just plain f-ugly.
I am with Rahul, the Z takes the cake, wish it wasn't that thick though. Anyway, for me, now it's between the Z and the E4200, two very different machines for sure but they will both cost me about the same albeit in nonidentical configurations. Choices, choices... -
The Z isn't thick - it just looks like it is in pics. Trust me, I own the G and Z, and they are close. The pics are very deceiving. If you want a Mac Book Air, it's not that, but it's a much better computer for the $3k than the MBA is.
-
Hope I don´t have to wait long for the next model. This is hideous.
Although the LG X110 is in a completely different league, to say the least, its design still appeals much more to me, especially the white one. -
Guys,
You are not fair imo. It isn't so different from the TZ. So, it can't be the TZ the best laptop ever and the TT the ugliest! Please post a picture of the black TT and after we see if is sooo much different. I agree the red is horrible, but the black and the premium are nice, always in my opinion. The major diversity is the silver details that maybe in real life they will appear better. -
this is the bling generation Sony is just catering to that
-
Im kicking myself for not buying the Z for 1629.98 at amazon granted it was the lowest spec on with 2.24ghz Intel Core 2 Duo but all Zs lookc the same and it had a 250GB HDD and 3GBs of ram now its back up to 1999
-
-
Haha, well I have to play the devil's advocate. I love the TT's looks. I think that chrome trim is so retro. I need to get a 2010 Mustang to match!
The way the metal trim converges into the swivel knobs is very elegant too. -
-
I would like to see pictures of the black version but guess what.. i'm glad i own a tz
)
-
Eh, The sony vaio pie is not that bad. I know I like it, but I can't wait till the white version is out.
-
So here's the black one... only slightly less ugly than the red. I hate how the silver barrel-hinge and the silver sides look sandwiched in between the outer black chassis. I especially hate the way the lid is attached to the barrel on either sides with 2 flimsy looking pieces of plastic. -
its looks chunky
-
Did anyone follow the link to pcautoruity:
http://www.pcauthority.com.au/News/123510,sony-vaio-tt-breakthrough-ultralight-bluray-notebook.aspx
It seems to have different side trims, i.e., black greyish, instead of the silver side:
http://www.pcauthority.com.au/Gallery/123511,sony-vaio-tt-series.aspx
Unless my old eye are fooling me, they do look either black on picture 4, and grey on picture 3 (the second link).
Take a look, and please let me know what you think. -
I find it nice looking actually. I wouldn't choose red if I have the choice but no big deal. I like the lines, similar to the TZ. Like someone previously said: no big change in looks compared the TZ. So I don't know why all the fuss.
-
the outer rim is too wide and the part between screen and keyboard aswell. tz looks more sleek and sexy. it looks a little bit like a usual netbook
-
FYI, if you're curious about the Z and other computers like the TZ/G in a size comparison, I posted pics here:
http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?p=3957877#post3957877 -
Looks okay, I guess. TZ still looks nicer in my opinion, but the TT specs make up for it. 1.4GHz SU9400 should be available for all the models, not just the $4K+ version. Really wish Sony would bring back their PictureBook sub-note.
