You guys are funny
-
@ Drvec: That was funny!
Did anyone notice in the gallery from Laptop Magazine's review, the underside shot of the TT? It looks like there's a large bottom plate that is removable, so that maybe the TT is serviceable from underneath, instead of removing the keyboard and working from the top like in the TZ.
If so, I'd imagine that users will finally be able to replace hard drives easily. That would definitely be a huge improvement over the TZ in my opinion.
Any thoughts?

I was at a Sonystyle store here in Toronto. The Manager told me he has a new batch of TZ coming in soon (they have sold out of TZ for the last 2 months). The Canadian model has U7700 cpu running at 1.33 GHz, 2GB ddr2, and 120 GB HDD (4200 rpm, non ata), and the usual other stuff, like wwan, finger print security, etc. He said the price is $1700. The one I paid for 2 months ago, and returned was $2200. So it is a saving of $500.
My only concern is that it is hot at the bottom right, that I have to put a magazine between it and my lap. I use it mainly for surfing the web and some minor photo editing which is acceptable as far as speed goes.
I think the new TT will probably be $2200. What is our advice. TZ or TT? -
The new Vaio IS a TT!
Here's the info.
Pretty much everything you read in yesterday's rumor posts about the Sony Vaio TT are true the Blu-ray drive, 256 GB SSD, 2.87-pound weight and thickness under an inch. It also has an 11.1-inch, LED-backlit 16:9 LCD panel, Sprint EV-DO mobile broadband, and an HDMI port that outputs at 1080p resolution.
The TT also has 2 USB ports, built-in webcam, Bluetooth and 802.11n Wi-Fi. The TT will be available this summer in three colorsBlack, Red and Champagne Goldand starts at $2000. Models with Blu-ray start at $2700, while SSD models start at $2750. [Sony]
SONY UNVEILS WORLDS LIGHTEST BLU-RAY DISC NOTEBOOK
SAN DIEGO, Sept. 23, 2008 Sony today took the wraps off the worlds lightest computer with Blu-ray Disc technology the VAIO® TT Series notebook.
Housed in a lightweight carbon-fiber chassis, this new model weighs just 2.87 pounds and is less than 1-inch thin.
This engineering marvel packs the power of HD technology into an ultra-light, ultra-portable notebook, said Mike Abary, senior vice president of VAIO product marketing at Sony Electronics.
Select models play Blu-ray Disc movies in full HD 1080p resolution when connected to a compatible HDTV. These units can also record, store and play back personal content on high-capacity BD media.
It features an 11.1-inch widescreen display (measured diagonally) with Sonys XBRITE-DuraView LCD technology, delivering 100 percent color saturation for a wide range of vibrant colors and true-to-life picture quality. This technology also produces a brighter screen thanks to an energy-efficient white LED backlight so you can view photos in crystal-clear resolution.
The display is ideal for Blu-ray Disc movies. Since many HD films are shot using a 16:9 aspect ratio, the units extra-wide LCD is constructed with the same dimensions. This minimizes the black bars that typically appear, letting you view movies in their intended format.
For those who prefer to watch content on a big screen television, the TT model also has an HDMI output connector so you can connect it to a compatible high-definition TV for a larger viewing experience (connector cable sold separately).
It is equipped with Intel® Centrino® 2 processor technology for powerful PC output and energy-conserving features that deliver long battery life.
Select VAIO TT notebooks feature a dual channel 256GB (128GB X 2) solid state drive (SSD) with RAID technology. The result is quicker boot-up times, faster application launches and overall enhanced performance.
The PC integrates wireless Wide Area Network (WAN) technology provided by the Sprint® Mobile Broadband Network and its latest mobile network technology, EV-DO Revision A. For this, a separate Sprint service subscription is required.
The notebook comes with the choice of Windows Vista® Home Premium, Vista Business and Vista Ultimate operating systems. Windows® XP Professional is also available on select models.
All models are ENERGY STAR® 4.0 compliant, hold an EPEAT Silver ranking and incorporates such eco-conscious features as a mercury-free LED backlit LCD.
The TT model starts at $2,000. The BD version will go for about $2,700, while the SSD model (128GB) for around $2,750. It is available in a premium carbon black, silk black, champagne gold and crimson red.
The VAIO TT notebooks will be available online at www.sonystyle.com/pr/tt. They will also be sold at Sony Style® stores, military base exchanges, and select retailers around the country starting this fall. -

hahahah thats funnie

Annie is just trying to help. But, what is the real advantage of TT over TZ? CPU speed is about the same, fsb is faster, and HDD is faster. Don't know if it is going to be cooler. Is it worth $500. Besides, a lot of poster here do not like the look, altho some may have cvhanged their mind.
-
I prefer the looks of the TZ. If you don't need the extra features and horsepower, go for the TZ. -
wow it look so cool!!
-
I wonder how long before the 1.8" 5400rpm drives can be put in the TZ. That seems to be the only concrete advantage.
-
The GPU is the real improvement imo. -
It seems Sony has reserved the 1.4 G SU9400 for the high price model, all the other models has the 1.2 GHz, which is slower then the U7700 in the TZ, altho small. I agree the gpu and the HDD will improve overall performance. What about heat, do you think the new TT will likely be cooler? It seems SU9400 or SU9300 and U7700 all are 10 Watts, generating the same amount of heat?
-

-
Yes, the biggest improvement will come from the new gfx chipset.
BluRay/HDMI and SSD are also nice additions, but at quite a premium. -

No violet, but lots and lots of premium GOLD color options...
Looks like gold is the new violet for Sony now... -
The Blu-ray drive still doesn't write double layer DVD according to Japan Sony web site.
-
Sony will also release a special edition 007 edition of the TT to celebrate the upcoming movie, only 100 units will be made.
-
edit: gah i thought it was a white TT on the link but it was the NS - wasn't looking properly
rahul - any links for that bond one? never even heard of the last one -
Now I wonder which color is on the 007 TT, black does have a high chance. Gold is not bad for Bond's girl. -
I'm quite sure we will see a white TT in an upcoming refresh.
Here's the news on the 007 TTs.

i must say the jp photos make it look better but the chrome is still irking me. will need to see it in the flesh, so to speak, to make final judgement.
edit: cheers rahul - i think the gold TT would be good choice for the 007 -
tt is looking better and better

Here is the Vaio TT customizer for Japan.
http://www.jp.sonystyle.com/Style-a/Ownermade/tt90/index.html
There are some interesting options:
- Premium Cover Designs - Fancy textured patterns for the gold colored lids.
- 3GB RAM - Makes some sense as 32bit Windows doesn't really see 4GBs.
- 1-SEG TV Tuner - Useless outside of Japan.
Does anyone know if there are any benefits to the Carbon over the basic Black? Other than the brushed look and bragging rights, is there any practical benefit to warrant the ~$50 premium? Is it stronger?...lighter? Is the WHOLE case made of carbon fiber, or just the back cover of the LCD? -
But having 4GB means dual channel RAM and will be faster. Plus the remaining 0,8GB RAM is used for integrated graphics.
At current prices of RAM, it makes a lot of sense to get 4GB. -
I do agree that the TT looks much better in the JP photos too, so now I'm in a great dilemma. TZ or TT?! I know I should wait to see TT in real life, but I'm afraid the TZ would be pulled off the shelves by then!
And is it just me or does the red TT look more acceptable now? I for sure will not go for the black one cos it looks too manly. No champagne gold for me too cos I don't like its keyboard colour. So it's just left with the red, which I initially thought looked extremely ugly with a black keyboard (bad colour combination!). So does the red really look good with time, or have I subconsciously lowered my standards in desperation to accept TT's design so that I can spare myself the agony of choosing between the red TT and white TZ (which is my favourite colour!)? -
Any idea/first hand impression (from what I gathered the TT was in display in some tradeshows) on how how often/loud the fan operates on this ?
Got a TX3, and waiting to jump straight to the TT, but I am slightly concerned the fan noise issue is somewhat low on Sony priority when itcomes to improving the TZ/TT lineup (I mean, looks like they are more into "cramming as many features as they can"-mode into this). -
hi lightrain
we seem to be going through such similar dilemma
i really love the white TZ so much but am in a quandary over it all. if i wait to see the TT then the TZ may be gone. but i do not like the other TT colours at all and would only buy it white so even longer wait. otherwise i am considering going up to the Z. i had a momentary sob to.
the red does look better now, but what distracts me is the coloured frame around the screen.
don't like the gold colour much at all, though the engraved ones are nice. if it was a gold lid only with complete white inside it may look much better.
personally i think you should try to see the TT for yourself before deciding but i know its a toughie. it looks like i may have missed the boat on ordering the white TZ from japan now the CTO is gone from japan website, and the specs were better from japan than buying here in aus.
thems the breaks i guess
there will always be another white notebook i'm sure - i am just not sure i am prepared to wait that long
good luck in your decision -
Some nice pics here:
http://www.conics.net/catalog/images/sony/vaio_tt/
Is starting to like me also the TT...There is an option of 576 GB HD! Impressive for this little machine.
-
Yeah, the TT is growing on me. I'm still pretty sure I'll go for the Z, though I think I'll wait long enough to compare it side by side with the TT.
-
The white TZ was also my fav. However, living in Australia means we are always a step behind. It may be the end of Oct before we can see the TT in the stores.
As the CTO models of the TZ is no longer on sonystyle jp. There is still the option of snapping up a normal TZ. But for the price of a CTO TT we can only get a rather less alluring onyx black TZ. To get a carbon fibre, we have to fork out $4000 AUD.
Also, why cant we get engraving on the black TT? its such a strange lineup. A black TT with engravings will at least up its visual standard to be within the realms of the TZ.
Anyone know how the new TT's international warranty is? I'm looking at conics and they dont seem to mention oversea care anymore? I did see somewhere on the sony jap site that warranty had the word 'international' in it. Cant seem to find the link anymore but. -
will be interested to see what you decide to do - have you tried haggling with sonycentre? they seemed ok to haggle before with me but after the TT was released they wouldn't actually budge.
i see pricejapan still has their TZ quote up but that could be a oversight as well
edit: conics has no WWAN option - is there WAN at all on the TT? i can't recall -
-
Are you guys aware of the premium carbon TT design? It will also offered in the Z series. In fact, its being sold in Japan as we speak.

One of the pics from that link:
-
ther premium carbon looks good from this angle
the chrome hinge covers and the trim's appearance is less shocking to me now
seems sort of a motor vehicle theme carry over -
**** that is sexy
-
Not sure this pic has been posted yet. Internal view of the TT (look at the bottom of the page).
http://www.akihabaranews.com/en/new...y+Booth,+the+Ultra+Slim+HD+TV+Wonderland.html -
Anyone else think the TT's keyboard is absolutely tiny? Compared to some of the netbooks which are the same physical size, the TT seems to have a lot of space between the keys, which makes the keys tiny and there's space on the sides as well, same as the TZ, which I hate the keyboard of.
-
The premium weave on the TT and Z is a little different than the one that was used on the top end SZ model. I like both and both look great but i prefer the SZ top end lid slightly better i think because of the simple fact that the lid has a brown undertone to it.
My laptop is all black apart from the lid and i like to have a touch of colour on the lid.
Mind you the Z is more silver than black so it works very well with a black lid.
It looks great on the TT as well and if you have a thing for black you probably will love this. -
Is your SZ truly black though?
In bright sunligt I have the following "options" on mine:
Lid - brown, "Steel"
casing: dark purple to black...
palmrest - touch of purple... -
DetlevCM you might me right there but just by looking the SZ in normal light the body does look black. I think that i am still yet to take my laptop out and use it outside in bright sunlight.
-
Ok.
Well it also happens when light shines through a window.
But your right - casual observing, it lookjs black. -
Hi.
I'm sorry that I didn't introduce myself on my first post.
I was doing a quick search of the TT and found your forum.
I only had time to cut and paste the info I found.
The SSD, and Blu Ray are my draw to the TT. I held off on the TZ, and almost purchased it because it's so sweet. The hopes of Sony making a bigger SSD kept me from buying too quickly.
Now this latest recall of the Z's has me hesitating a little longer.
I'm going to have to go back and read more on this thread, I haven't had the time and there's a ton of information that I'd like to know about.
Annie -
Also, I'm used to reading on a board that starts with the newest post first, and each subsequent page is older.
In my haste, I didn't realize that my post would be 40 pages down where there's a lot more posts, and information!.... oops... I'm sorry.
