From TT specification page, the blu-ray drive supports DVD +/- DL write. Is it a typo again?

I can't believe that some people are even considering buying a TZ at this point, especially without having seen the TT in person and properly evaluating it. Besides, it's not that horrible in pictures. A computer is much more than just a sexy case.

The TZ's GMA950 graphics core is more than 3 years old...ancient in computer terms. The new TT will smoke it in every way.

I agree that you have to see it in person before judging it. Z looks better in real life too.

I do think that TZ looks nicer, is lighter and probably the screen is bit more vibrant as it comes with a slightly glossy coating. Another reason to go for TZ is price. There should be great deals available in the retail channel once TT starts being in stock. For basic use with XP the TZ is more than fast enough. It's like a fancy netbook.

I don't think I'll buy TZ again, after returning mine which is too hot to put on my lap.

I hope TT will be cooler. I am guessing it will be cooler, since it uses ddr3, smaller cpu , hopefully bigger heat sinks and fan (hence heavier weight) :p

I don't like the silver area on the TT. It'll be much better if it's looks like the metal parts of the Z. Welcome back. the volume buttons. When I upgrade to TZ from TX, I miss them.

When I was watching the laptopmag video of the TT, I was thinking it definitely looks better in this video than the pictures - it looked pretty good to me.

But then he put it next to the Z, and it made the TT look so bad :) The Z looks just about the same size/weight, even though it has a bigger screen, faster CPU & GPU, full sized keyboard, larger touchpad, nicer looking design (IMO), etc., etc.

I have to agree with ac500, the video started and i said, wow thats nice (but looks like a toy). And then Z showed up and I said: oh boy, thats my next notebook (TZ replacement) ;)

I also like Z's design way more than the TT's. TT doesn't look classy at all. But anyway I don't think Z will ever have a white version, even after refresh, right? I still prefer white to other colours... Sighs!

In my mind the Z is now Sony's more flagship small notebook (with the AW taking over the large end), with the fact that you get so much more from the Z than the TZ or TT for a similar price point and only a minimal price increase, I personally wouldn't go for a TT because of it.

For me, Sony should keep the succesfull design of the Z and do exactly the same model in smaller. Who wanted power gets the Z, who wanted more portability and battery life takes the TT. I confess tho that I didn't thought that they can put these specs in such a small chassis. Here not even the Z has the magic combo SSD+blu-ray.

    Good idea,

I would consider a TT if it had the same aluminium of the Z. Anyway, I don't need all the power that the Z offers.

Really agree! How could this TT design actually happen in Sony?! Malfunctioning designers?

Man, if they could just refresh the TT and make it look exactly like the Z but smaller, it would be PERFECT, no doubt about it.

In terms of design the SR and Z are pretty similar, and then the TT looks completely different. If they just followed the same design... :(

SR and Z used TZ's design, just a bit thicker and different color. TZ is still the most beautiful in my opinion.

I certainly love the TZ crispness, and wonder why that didn't continue on to the TT. I hope to upgrade my TZ to a larger SSD and then wait another many months for the TT to come out

I am onboard with dreaming my way into a fully featured TT, maybe even the classy champagne color

No more "early adopter" for me

just watched that video...it does look better in the video but i must say i now dislike the silver strips even more.

i'm so with you. if the Z was white i'd have bought one already. i just prefer the white as well.

i think the black of the TT is nicer than the grey/black of the Z, but i think overall the Z does look nicer.
i wonder really how many people overall will make the jump to the Z especially after seeing that video :p

Guys you are forgetting the main thing about TT...its battery life!

TT is not ment to be a ultra portable multimedia machine, like TZ. For some people battery life is all and TT (TZ) can offer the max of it.

And about the look..it does look "bad", but first we have to dudge it in person. For me.. Z also looked bad on photos, but in person its much nicer.

i think i sort of disagree. the TT is being pushed as a multi media machine with its blu ray and HDMI out etc. i personally have no interest in multimedia on a portable and have been looking at the TZ exactly for its battery life and its extreme portability. if i moved over to the TT i would not get the version with blu ray etc.

but i still haven't seen any battery life spcs for the TT
so i don't think anyone is forgetting :)

To the point: The T model following the TZ should absolutely focus on weight, battery life, and footprint (portability), and NOT on multimedia, if so implies more weight etc.

So, not only the horrible, cheap-like design, is definetively a step in the wrong direction, but also the priority of the features.

Sony can remedy this situation with launching VERY SOON a REALLY GOOD new T model or some other ultra-mobil model, perhaps with a bit smaller screen than 11,1 inches, or with the TZ's size, but upgraded.

Erm. Blu ray can be there just for the "show".

OR...it can be there to store massive data that some people might need.

Also..the latest offices or/and conference rooms do offer HDMI connections.

I dont think blu-ray and hdmi is for the multimedia part, its just "the best" thing..just like putting DVD-RW into a laptop when they had floppy drives...

The issue about screen its not the case here, its the keyboard size. If sony wants to keep it at the minimum possible size, they cannot make smaller laptop. Unless they go for model similar to UX.

its true blu ray is a storeage medium but i think the write speed is 1x ?
and considering the cost of discs i would prefer to use a portable HDD for storage.

and yes it can be used for show as well but doesn't that break into multi media territory right there? maybe my idea of MM is alittle different :)

but i think we all agree the TT needs great battery life

That's an extra USB port there in place of the optical drive.

Some TZ models also come without a DVD drive and also have an extra USB port there. In Japan, you can order the TZ with a 2.5" HDD or even nothing at all and just a 1.8" HDD/SSD and so you get an extra USB port.

But the funny thing is that all our models currently have an optical drive so its a picture mistake, but we will see TT models with no DVD drive (especially in Japan) and an extra USB port instead like for an external DVD drive.

If it's going to be "silver" then chrome is better than silver paint etc. Chrome is an extremely hard metal, and very difficult to scratch (don't mistake this with the polished metal back of an iPod).

I don't recall people saying the was ugly when it was first announced, can you show me posts that showed that?

I am wondering why Sony decided to put this nasty shiny chrome like material on the sides and mouse buttons of the TT when the TZ was all black and subdued. The TT looks more garish and showy to me.

LOL, I thought the Z was lovely in design from the get-go, I really like its smaller footprint and keyboard over the SZ. I find the SZ's keyboard a bit too mushy and didn't like its larger footprint than the previous S series, didn't like how tall it was, but thats just me.

Oh I'm in the same boat. I loved the Z from day 1, and I've just sold my SZ6 to get one :)

That said, I actually think the TT is beautiful in black. I think that some elements of it's design show a better communication between designers and engineers than the Z, and it's a bit cleaner. Take for example the optical drive, on the TT vs the Z:

    View attachment 24778

notice how the whole chrome bar pops out for the BR drive (ignore USB) on the TT, whereas on the Z the optical drive just cuts through the middle of the grey bar? And also looking at both sides you can see that the ports on the TT disrupt the lines less than on the Z. On the Z, for example, the HDMI seems to just hang off the bottom edge awkwardly.

Nixon said many people complained about scratches on their TZ screen. So they introduced the Duraview coating. I think TT uses the same panel as TZ (Toshiba I believe), just a different coating.

What i do find a bit funny is that just last year many people were saying on this forum that they do not like aluminium laptops. They were saying that they were a dime a dozen and that they looked cheap. It is not that i do not like aluminium laptops i just am not as keen on the two tone colours and i don't really like it on the MBA either.

It is strange though how some people no longer like black but love aluminium instead. The XPS 1330 palmrests is made out of brushed aluminium and it received so much criticism because of that on this forum last year

With the TT i think that they should have not tapered the lid edges like that but it is not horrendous and outside of this Sony forum the reaction seems to be quite positive towards it. Maybe some people just don't like a change.

I guess there always will be some people who just don't like a change. But I have nothing against changes per definition. Together with many others in this forum, I specifically dislike the way the lid edges are tapered. In my view, this is unaesthetical, and a definitive breach with the elegance of the T series (and other Vaio series as well) so far.

mandersen i agree with on the tapered edges but i just don't think that they are horrendous.
You know after i saw this notebook i started to read around and the comments around the net seemed pretty positive especially from those who have maybe have not owned a TZ in the past. I was surprised that some people like the red one as well lol.

The way the lid edges are tapered is not ugly by itslef, it just doesn't fit with the rest of the design and looks old school (it is the pretty much EXACT same bezel as the TX). In fact, the whole design looks like TZ mixed with TX with silver on the sides. This is subjective, of course, so we will see some people like it and others not so much. It is not ugly, just not what people expected: a design which moves FORWARD instead of backwards...
