unfortunately this it a lot different than a jailbreak for instance. the jailbreak there is a very very very large team of dev working to jailbreak. we have maybe 2-4... so the chances are a lot smaller. plus the fuel for computer bios mods dont seem to burn as long. as in the devs tend not to dedicate their lives to this work like devs who jailbreak (or do android phones or app devs ect.) so it is impossible to lock something down completely but it will require a lot of work to break.

does anyone know if this is hardware based or software. can they implement this in the new bios's for the old win 7 models?

I see, thanks for the quick reply.
Well I will have to just sit here with my fingers crossed and regret that I ordered my vaio before looking on this forum.

    Possibly.
Like what Bobby link us towards the Dell issue : Information about BIOS updates A07/A08 and higher for M14xR2, M17xR4 & M18xR2
Those Alienware owners who updated to the latest BIOS(secured) can't even downgrade back.
Fortunately they found a way to bypass it.
Unfortunately it doesn't work for Sony, yet.

    Good Luck!
    Thanks!

Thanks Amal77, these mods works very well.
Although I would like to share a less common problem I encountered and the solution to it.

I have a 2012 Vaio S15, replaced HDD with SSD and clean win7 installed, connected to an external monitor with HDMI.
After installing the modded BIOS, everything works well until I shut down and restart the computer.

The animation effects (the fade in and fade out when opening and closing programs) became incredibly slow.

The problem only happens if I start the laptop with HDMI connected (and it can be reproduced every time).
If I start the laptop without HDMI and the plug in HDMI afterwards the problem will not occur.

I have to reinstall the NVIDIA driver from SONY to solve this problem. It is not a difficult fix but it did scare the hell out of me at the start. I hope this will help if anyone else experience the lag. Cheers.

I flashed your BIOS mod some time ago (the 835 one), and it worked great, temperatures stayed at 70°C max, I thought there were no problems. Until one day my Windows became super slow and in the end didn't even boot anymore (this was 3 weeks after I had bought this laptop). This was due to a failing harddrive (it had about 3000 corrupt sectors). I was still able to flash back to stock though, and sent my laptop back to Sony without any problems.
Now that I finally have my laptop back with a new harddrive, I'd like to know if you guys think that it's possible that my hard drive started failing due to excessive heat from the mod? Or was it just a failing HDD?

Hopefully the as more people get their hands on the newer sony's and the more sony make laptops with this annoying bios, the more interest there will be in finding a solution.
Are there any other solutions to upping the graphics cards clock speed? even if it is less significant? It seems silly to me to run it under its potential when it doesn't get hot at all.

I have killed 3 HDD's with basically stressing them 100% for long periods of time ( they were 5400rpm drives). Each only lasted ~1 month each until i decided to buy an Intel SSD instead which has lasted for me for over a year now.

    Code:
the normal recommended working temperature of a hard disk is 35-40°С. Once it rises by just 10°С – from 40°С to 50°С, the safety of its work becomes more than two times less!=more likely to fail

i don't believe OC has a major effect on hdd temperature.
Gaming for about 10 minutes with laptop on my lap i had an increase of about 2-3°C (both primary ssd and hdd in odd caddy) just now, so it seems that we have no problem there.

Hi and thanks in advance to all those who have made this possible

I have an issue, I have applied several bios updates but 3d Mark 11 has been giving me the same performance/results no matter what (around 1400-1500 points). When I see these results at the webpage it shows that the clock is working at 500Mhz, GPU-Z is marking the increase though, however the base and the top frequencies are the same (is this normal ?) I'm currently using the svl7 version @ 835Mhz and I have changed the settings as suggested by Amal77

gotta read the forum FiRez. please confirm you have done all the recommended things listed in the first post and even first few pages...

having more people alone will not help the mod come out. you cant pressure the devs to work harder. but there is a possibility that a new dev will come on when they get the computer but that may not be very likely.

the hard drive is not really near any hot objects. it is as far away from anything like that so the oc should not cause any extra heat in the hd.... plus there are many of us who are running it all fine for quite a while now (more than 3 weeks... more like 3 months)

Has anybody tried to unlock MSI Afterburner on SVS13/15 yet?

[HD] How to Unlock MSI Afterburner to Maximize Overclock - YouTube

I'm looking for a new notebook and recently considered other models (U2442N/V/F, UX51VZ/U500VZ) but none of them made it for me. Either the display was crap or the price was too high, etc...
I never really considered the S15 due to orangegate, but after reading this thread I really wanna buy the S1512S1ES with Windows 8 because it seems to be a good compromise and the price (~990€ ;) looks OK.
Somehow i hope they managed to eliminate orangegate with the new models, as the new UX51VZ for example (which uses the same panel btw) doesn't suffer from orangegate.
However, not getting the full potential out of the GT 640M LE (be it bios OC oder software/MSI-AB OC) would be a reason for me not to buy this notebook.

Please help me out and maybe somebody try the above mentioned unlock for MSI Afterburner. Owners of the Win7 model might also try the workaround just to see if you can raise the clock by more than only 135MHz.

    Edit:
If you struggle saving the MSIAfterburner.cfg File, just open the notepad as administrator and open the file from within notepad. You shouldn't have any problems saving it then.

You can get beta drivers directly from Nvidia.

Yes, no dice. Also tried forcing a hard-coded P-State with nvidiaInspector through a batch file and GPU-Z said max core clock was 635 (and nvidiaInspector showing 1000), but when I tried running 3DMark the card only got up to 540 meaning that the Kelper chips indeed do not actually boost to their theoretical max boost levels.

Gonna install Windows 8 Pro tomorrow on my S13A and give it a go with the BIOS mod. Using a SVS13A190X at the moment, with the original BIOS that this mod came with when it was released a few months ago. I do not plan on upgrading my BIOS, just a clean install of Windows 8 from Windows 7.

Will upgrade the gaming benchmarks in my sig with Windows 8 benchmarks when I have time.

    Thanks for the fast response.

Will I be able to reach 1000/1000 with software OC on the 640m LE? If not, what is the maximum clock can I reach and will it make a big difference in terms of FPS?

    Thanks

Nope. You can't OC the GT 640M LE with any software tools.
The only way to increase its clock is by BIOS MOD.

Differences are quite huge if you compare stock vs mod.

Here are an example of the differences in NFS Most Wanted running on the same settings :

Is it possible to rename the GT640, 650 or 660? It is only the difference in the frequency and type of memory, but there is a GT650 on dd3.

you can rename it to anything you want in the driver INF file (say, to 680m SuperAwesomeOC), but that doesn't make any difference. it's just a name.

Decided to cancel my order for my vaio S. Turns out that TNT lost track of it and they would have to send me a new one, being that it would take another 2-3 weeks (on top of their own 10 day investigation period). Instead ive gone alienware. M14X to be precise. Spent less money and ill get more power out of it. Good luck to the rest of you though.

Is it possible to do it at the BIOS level, and do not get problems?

Quick question, will there a BIOS mod for the SONY VAIO SVS1512V1E ? Thats the new model with Windows 8. It's either that one with the mod or the new Asus N56 series.

    Hi there,
once the mod-bios is flashed, is it possible to flash the original sony-bios back (no matter what version)? Just asking cause of guarantee-cases.
@Amal77: Thanks for your good work. are you trying to flash the newer versions next days/weekend? Sry for the (maybe) stupid question, i don't know how long the programming takes.

"Thank you for the info. You are the 2nd person who shared the same BIOS number.
The BIOS naming seems a lot different than the previous Windows 7 Model of Vaio S.
Thus, it is recommended to stay away from the BIOS MOD, until a new version of BIOS come out for the new Windows 8 model.

Can't do much. Sorry guys. "

I don't really understand. That means although the BIOS naming is different, it doesn't mean that the version is already changed ?

Yes, you can flash back to the stock BIOS.
Nope, I will not do any flashing this week, need to research more on the security issues on the New BIOS.
Some more it's quite hard to do testing coz I don't own the New Model.
Also hoping that svl7 will come out with a way to bypass the security issue.

    They(BIOS) are really different.
They have secured the BIOS so that it'll be very hard to flash the MODded BIOS.
Even the Video BIOS version of the GT640M LE are different compared to the Windows 7 model.

So, it is not recommended to flash the Windows 7 model BIOS to the Windows 8 model BIOS(though I doubt it'll pass the flashing process at all).

Can I be of some help?

I bought the new Win8 model SVS1512S1E yesterday and I am very keen on seeing a working/flashable bios mod for the new models and I am willing to contribute to this cause!
However I do not have any deeper programming/coding skills yet, but I am willing to learn that too if necessary.

So if anybody needs information regarding the Win8 models feel free to ask me in this thread or pm me.

    Edit (off-topic):
By the way, I can confirm that orangegate has been fixed on the new Win8 models. So if you own a Win7 model maybe you contact sony support and ask them to exchange screens if you are still within warranty.

That's odd. Anyway, mine is without orangegate.

Red has a kind of warm feeling to it, at least compared to my 24" TN Philips display, but it is definitely red, and orange is orange.
I guess that's the difference when you compare IPS to TN.

I don't know if I am just noticing now, but I flashed the 1000/1000 like 2 months ago, but GPU-Z says my core clock is 1000mhz in game, and my memory clock is 500mhz.

    Are these the correct values?

Yes, there's a bug with GPU-Z on certain version.
Try using old version like 0.6.4 for accurate reading.

Amal77, thanks for your work, I am liking the 1000/1000 version of you modded BIOS! I was wondering if you were working on any versions with a higher core clock rate, either with or without overvolting. Perhaps 1025/1000, 1050/1000, all the way up to 1100/1000 or anything in between. I was able to run some games at 1000/1100 without any issues, and my gpu temps peaked around 70 Celsius.

You are very lucky to hit that stable. I could do 1000/1000 but I decided to pull back to 900 all. There is no over volting and I doubt you can get 1100 without ov.

Strangely, when I was only able to OC to 540mhz with the stock bios, i was still able to overclock to around 1030 to 1070 memory stable, depending on the game. Now that the core clock is higher, 1100 mem has been even more stable on civ5, playing on a lategame save (year 2025) with TONS of units and cities (going for military win), max settings. Civ5 finally forced closed after an hour of solid performance. Didn't see any artifacts while playing though.

Amal, do you have keyboard ghosting on your s13 keyboard?

Is it just me or the Vaio S13A suffers from keyboard ghosting horror issue. Especially Q+W+SpaceBar and Q+W+D, now this is not a problem if you play strategy games or games like Diablo 3 but if you play MMORPG or shooter games that requires you to use 3 key combination surrounding WSAD keys in the movement area then you know what i'm talking about.

I'll give you an example, Q as strafe, W as forward and spacebar as jump, in WoW, if you have ghosting horror issue, only 2 keys will work.

    Test it here

Wow I just tried your link and I didn't realize just how bad my SVS15 keyboard ghosts. I can't do Q+W+SPACE but i usually strafe with a and d, using my mouse to look around. I can only use a combination of 2 letters from the ASDW keys at a time. I don't play many shooters though. Haven't tried MMO's on this laptop very much yet, though.

Those that come preinstalled with Windows 7 should work.
    BIOS version R0142C5.

They're trying to secured the BIOS from hacking and modding.
    It sucks big time.

Really sorry to hear that man.
Let's hope other modder out there can find a way to bypass them.

There's a possibility that it will never come out. Have tested and it seems not stable playing with voltage.
Could be a hardware limitation thing.

    Yup, mine also does't work.
Since I spent most of my time on an external LCD and keyboard, so I won't mind much. :p
