Mine recognizes all 3dmark programs and already has em on that list as use the Nvidia GPU, ill take another look tonight.

Sorry about asking something that was already covered. after spending a day fixing all sorts of other peoples problems i really didn't feel like dinking around with my own. The life of IT.

Side note... my FPS in WOT (world of tanks) has changed 20 ish frames from yesterday (stock bios) so that seems to pick it up? anyway awsome work.

Should I run a burn in? to get the thermal paste conditioned?

WoT is a bad game since it supports only 1 core of CPU. So as a result, graphics card power doesnt really matter much.
Im playing WoT on 1920x1200. medium settings and view distance on high. No AA. Getting arounf 25-45FPS and its fairly smooth.

cool another WoT player ;) may i be bold enough to ask your IGN?

anyhow back to business what is your cpu clockspeed? Can you overclock CPU? is it even wise as i have heard ivy is not the coolest for OC'ing

its sorta upsetting when a guy with a P4 can pull 80fps and my shiny new lappy gets 30ish

I have followed everything in the first post and I don't know what is wrong with my vaio s. Fifa 12, BF3, and Assassin's Creed Brotherhood are three games I have tested.

The only game that runs fine is Fifa maxed out, no lag, no stuttering, smooth 60 frames all the time. However, when I play Assassin's Creed even at medium settings, 1600 X 900, my vaio will maintain 60 frames. Nevertheless after a few minutes of playing the gameplay drops down to 15-20 fps. The same problem occurs with Bf3.

Perhaps something maybe wrong with the settings or drivers? My laptop is running the 935 mhz bios with the 304.79 drivers. My specs are the following: i5, 8gb ram, and the standard 1gb 640 GT LE. Here is my 3d mark score

Hey guys what's the difference between SVS13A12FX vs SVS13A190X?

Both are the 1600x900 matte w/ gt 640m LE so i know both are the premium versions of the 13.3".

SVS13A12FX is the one they sell at bhandphoto/newegg and SVS13A190X is the one from sony store website.

Besides the different code or numbers after SVS13A, what are the difference between the two?

Another question, does this laptop does not support sata 3? So my crucial m4 ssd will just run at sata 2 and will no longer show 7.9 on WEI and will be slower then?

Will the bios for increasing gpu performance stay stable and permanent without redoing it all over again in case i want to reformat or do a clean install? Or do i need to reapply the bios everytime i do a clean install or reformat?

    Thanks

^ the former is a pre-configured model, and the latter is configurable and can only be ordered from SONY store. yes, no SATA III for you, unless you order your SSD from SONY while configuring the laptop.

how fast is your crucial m4 w/o sata 3? is the boot still under 25 sec? is the loading times still fast? what is your WEI for the primary drive?

well, i'm using a SA2 (the 2011 model of the S series) with its original BIOS which supports SATA III, so my M4 runs as fast as it is designed to. however, SONY removed that functionality with later BIOS updates, just like in the S13 (the 2012 model); hence the reason i refuse to update my BIOS.

Hi guys and special thanks to Amal77 and svl7 for the mods.
    got my S13p yesterday, i7 3520, 4GB, GT640LE 2GB, and a 640GB HDD.
just wanted to share the latest 3dmark11 after flashing the 900mhz mod:
    stock: P1385
after the 900Mhz mod: P2134 (but loud fans during the tests... I guess that's understandable because of the OC..)

    I now plan to:
    - replace HDD with SDD (probably samsung 830 256gb following the tips in the forum)
    - install a fresh copy of windows
    - replace ODD with the HDD in an HDD bay
    - add 8GB of ram

question: currently my WEI is: [processor 7.2; mem 5.9; graphics 4.7; gaming 6.8; hdd 5.9]
does this make sense? The hdd score will jump once I put the sdd, but what about the memory and graphics score? shouldn't they be higher?
any other tips not found in the first post here and in the general sony S owner thread?
    Thanks!

Does putting the computer in 'Maximum Performance' mode relegate the functionality of the 'Stamina' switch and/or Optimus tech? I'd like to think that when I don't need the OC'd benefits (browsing, word processing), I can just hit a switch/the system automatically chooses the integrated card.

Does the 2012 s13 or s15 have optimus? If not do you guys prefer a physical switch or the automatic software switching of optimus?

Are you sure sony vaio s 2012 has optimus? If it has optimus then why do we have a physical switch for stamina/speed then? The point of that switch is to switch between intel hd 4000 and the nvidia dedicated card. Again are you sure the sony vaio s 2012 13 and 15 have Optimus?

    From the Vaio Control Center

It will stay permanent until you reflash your bios again to a newer/older unMODded BIOS.
A reformat or clean install wont do any changes.

Once you switch to Stamina Mode, it will force it to use the Intel HD4000.

    I don't think there's a GT640M non-LE version for our VAIO.
Try to confirm it by using GPU-Z.

I own those Vaios in my sig. And unlike you, i have actually read the threads in the forum.
    So Yes. Im sure.

It has physical switch in case you want to force it to use IGP to save power or whatever reason.
I love that switch btw. I can always put my notebook to gaming or quiet mode with one touch.

Thanks for the info Supranium. But Cnet review and Mobiletechreview is saying the sony vaio s 2012 model doesn't have optimus, so i dunno who is telling the truth.

Question for Amal77, Do we have optimus on the 13 and 15 vaio S 2012 version? Can Optimus be used in using the gt 640m le in playing games like regular optimus laptops with the switch with the modded bios overclock? Can we just leave the switch on Stamina mode and rely on optimus and still gain the performance of the modded bios overclock?

SPEED MODE = Hybrid Graphics (Optimus(GT640M LE / Intel HD4000))
STAMINA MODE = ONLY Integrated Graphics (Intel HD4000)

Oh that's great news then because we have the best of both worlds? Can I just leave the physical switch to speed mode then since it has optimus which will only activate the nvidia geforce gpu when running games or when it is needed? I thought the whole point of putting it into speed mode was to run the geforce gpu all the time or am I wrong?

Yes, I have been using the SPEED MODE all this while, and rarely use the STAMINA MODE, and still getting a good battery life. As long as you monitor your usage correctly.

I only use the STAMINA MODE when I felt lazy to monitor the usage and just want to leave it idle, or do very minimal work.

Overall, I'm very happy with the laptop. :)

Awesome thanks for the info. Do you still get around 4-5 hours even when the switch is only on speed mode via optimus and does it uses the intel hd 4000 on speed mode when not gaming? Reason i'm askin is i dont want to keep going left and right on the physical switch of stamina/speed because that can wear out overtime and i'd rather just keep it on speed all the time.

You have the 13.3" model right? How's the build quality of it and does it really feel premium and worth the money?

How many points add the i7-3612QM proccesor on the 3dmark11 above the i5 2.9ghz?

Edit: And Why the i5 is more expensive than the i7 Quad core if the i7 is faster?

I get around 3 hours, coz I love using my laptop at the highest brightness ALL THE TIME.

As for optimus, you may force it to use either the Dedicated Graphics or Integrated Graphics by using the Nvidia Control Panel while you're on SPEED MODE, or leave it at default(auto).

Yes, I have the S13 Premium Model. It does feel kind of premium for me (not sure others). Only the screen does not feel that premium but average. Some people may get a bad batch, coz I've seen a sample at a Sony Store with the Bad one, I can clearly see the issue. As for the good batch, like I said, it feels average only, which I don't really mind, coz there are still more pro than cons about this laptop.

Another not so good thing is the speaker. Yes, it does kind of suck a bit compared to other laptop, but I don't care much.

People who usually return back the laptop is the S15 users, since there are a number of other good laptop on 15 inch which may compete with the Vaio.
Some users of the S13 also do return it back coz usually they can't accept the screen(probably gotten used to good quality lcd) or don't care much about the GPU. For me, I just don't see any other laptop that can compete other than the Gigabyte U2442(lcd about the same, with very little performance difference VS stock) and Asus UX32VD(Performance just ok(GT620M) but looses to vaio, but have way better FullHD display, nice design, and lighter).

I am more towards performance, so I choose Vaio.

    Around 100 plus I guess.

Hey Amal, is it safe to say the GT 640m LE on both the 13 and 15 are faster than the regular gt 640m and as fast as a ddr3 GT 650m and faster than a GTX 460m since ddr gt 650m is faster then gtx 460m when the Modded Bios is updated? From playing with it the last few weeks, would you say everything is stable and perfect?

The difference between the 640 LE, 640 and 650 are core clock speeds. All 3 have 384 shaders units and DDR3 RAM. With this modded vBIOS you essentially have a 650, similar to the GPU in the Clevo W110ER.

This is a good comparison list: Mobile Graphics Cards - Benchmark List - Notebookcheck.net Tech

Not sure about other machines, but the 640m LE in the Sony S15 is DDR3, but the 640m in the Samsung NP700Z5C is GDDR5:

Yes, Samsung models with 640M and 650M have DDR5 inside.
    Also MBP has DDR5 version.
Most of other manufactures have DDR3 versions of 640M and 650M.

But lets stay in topic please.
Amal, have you had any progress with overvolting? Let me know, if you do :p

    Still in a testing stage.
    Quite unstable.
Now already version 8, but still not that stable. Quite a complicated thing to play with the voltage I guess.
Will definitely share with you once reach stability.

    Yep. That's the one.

Hey Amal, Final 3 questions please

Is the modded bios overclock for 2012 sony vaio S 13/15 w/ GT 640m LE gets really close or the same as the performance of a dd3 gt 650m?

Since the last few weeks, would you say you are confident that this is stable and recommended with no throttling or heat issues after days or weeks of testing/running it?

Some finicky people are complaining about the screen quality since they all come from a Z or IPS display, but for normal regular users, do you think the screen quality is good enough with good color quality and is it great to watch movies in it and play games with good clarity and color?

    Thanks

They dont put the s13p up on display since it's only BTO.
And even on the display, they only start up a select number of laptops because that transforms them from new to used. I've tried comparing 13 and 15 screen quality myself, but the shopkeepers at the sony center wouldnt budge.
    Just my 2 cents ;)

Wow that's weird because rapidshare is working now at a work computer but it wasn't on my comp at home.

Btw Amal, does your Vaio S 13.3 heat up too much where it is uncomfortable for your left palm rest when gaming?

Is the fan annoyingly loud like a Hairdryer jet engine w/ a piercing sound?

Is the temperature as stable as before the modded bios and after?

I know you said that it has not throttle yet but as of now, has it been stable lately with no issues?

This based on my opinion, not sure bout others.
No, it does not heat up too much on the palm rest, still ok for me.

The fan does spin loud, but not annoyingly, very much bearable especially if you increase your speaker volume.

Temperature does increase around 3-7 Celsius depending on which MOD you used. Nothing to be worry about.

Stable? Depend on which MOD and your GPU. Some may take higher clock, some may not.
Usually the most optimum settings will be ranging from 900MHz to 1000MHz. Pretty much stable for normal daily use.

By extracting the VBIOS from the BIOS, Manually Hex Edit the VBIOS, then re-integrate and compress it back into a BIOS.
