Hi, Good that you succeeded: I have apparently exactly the same issue: the cylinder with the power connector is loose, so probably broken. I would be comfortable having a VAIO VGN FW service manual. Before I try, is there any trick , for example some hidden fragile piece of plastic that we need to carefully push before taking apart the cover or another part? Thanks a lot. By the way how did you manage to fix the broken part? Again thanks

I am currently looking for dismantle instructions for the Vaio VGN-FW285D too as I have to replace the LCD, lent it to a friend of mine who is a computer tech and hasn't worked on this line yet and is having some trouble dismanteling it. I think I'm going to zip over to his shop tonight to take a look at it myself as (forgot the user name) said it was a straight forward reverse engineer job. But I would also like any tips on hidden clips or fragile parts I might break in taking it apart, even if it is relatively straight forward.

I'll check back later, thanks. :)

So Mike told me last night that the issue he is having in taking it apart is the hinges holding the LCD to the computer because of the way Sony has designed it (see picture), he doesn't know how to get them off without breaking them becasue they seem to wrap all the way around where the older models he's worked on have a seam. Any help would be great, as I can't seem to find a service manual anywhere.
I've looked up quite a bit on dismantling laptops to replace the screen and it seems so easy, the face plate should just come off so I can get at the bare LCD, remove any brackets holding it in place, pull screen out gently and remove video cables, then the inverter, pull out old LCD to replace with new then reverse the steps. That is of course the cliff notes, but in all the examples given you can replace the LCD without needing to take those hinges off.
Can anyone confirm how to take it apart, or that on the FW series you don't even need to?

    Thanks for any help guys.

This is an image of both my model and a example disassembled model from one of the tutorials I've read.

I've got the case apart and the LCD unhooked and removed, all has gone well... but there is an issue that I'm stumped with.

The original LCD had two power connections running from it into the inverter, and the new LCD only has one......... ??? I can't imagine that it would only need one or why would the original have had two. Any help would be greatly appreciated ppl.

    Thanks.

Sounds like you have the wrong LCD. I believe some have dual lighting elements.

Peter-X check the first five pages of this forum. There are dedicated SSD threads with benchmarks. Questions about SSD's would be better placed in those threads.

Really, you waited five whole minutes before bumping you own message? Forum rules require you to wait at least 24 hours before asking something a second time. Have a little patience, expecting an immediate response from another FW owner is a bit much. Its not like folks spend their whole day here on this forum.

I have a review of how to clean the heat sink in a laptop of the same series (VGN-Z) at
Releasing Daemons: How to clean the heatsink and renew thermal compound in a Sony Vaio VGN-Z590 (VGN-Z Series) laptop

You can dismantle your laptop up to the point of HDD removal. Then you can replace your HDD with an SSD easily. Next rewind the disassembly process and then goes an OS installation part.

To remove the bezel on the FW series, you have to unscrew the lid from the base. What I did was I removed the speaker grill ( screws are underneath the battery and a few to the side) then I removed the speakers to get to the hinge screws and theres three screws on each side and you can then remove the lid.
That's as far as I went.. I didn't undo the keyboard or palm rest, so all cables under that are still attached, but this gives you access to the bottom screws on the bezel if you are careful.
    Good luck :)

Hi, I have the same issue with my power connector for my VGN-FW21l (uk version) I am having trouble getting to the power socket to look at replacing the connector - i cant get past the final screw to take the silver casing off.

Any advice would be appreciated! I have removed the final screw in the pic below but cant get the solver cover off to get t the power connector!

    Thanks in advance.

    Hey guys,

I'm looking for any kind of help you can offer on disassembling a VPCEB17FX. I'm trying to replace the DC power jack, and would like some instructions to go by instead of just trying to tear into it blind.

    Thanks!
